Right-Click on iBook?

I am a new Apple user and am having trouble saving images and downloading songs from the Internet. On a PC, one can right-click and select Save As to save an image or download a song from a link. Also, you can browse your mouse over an image and an icon would appear for you to save the image onto your hard drive on a PC. However, I realize that the iBook does not have a right-click option. What is the alternative? Please help. (I am using the iBook without an external mouse. Thanks in advance.

If you so desire, you can always plug in a multibutton mouse. It will work just like you would expect.
Maybe one of these days the built in mous button WILL do a "right click", just like the new Mighty Mouse. Apple kept saying "NO" to a multibutton mouse. Then, they released the mighty mouse. Now, the mighty mouse is the standard mouse that ships with the new G5 iMac. (it's getting cold down there! )

  • Two Finger Right Click on late G4 iBook with USB Trackpad?

I learned that with OSX Version 10.4.7 it is possible to use the two-finger-click instead of ctrl-click for right-clicking. But this only works on the new Intel Macbooks/Pro. Well, this is nice.
For older Laptops with ADB-Trackpad there is a freeware program called iScroll2 which also provides this feature.
For the late 2005 G4 iBooks with USB-trackpads there is apparently nothing:
The feature doesn't come with 10.4.7 here and iScroll2 is ADB-only.
On the one hand I don't really get the problem here, why these machines are not supported.
Since there is no announcement from apple it seems that they are just not interested in supporting computers which have been sold till not even a year ago.
If Apple is definitely not planning to support this in the future I would at least expect that they publish the source for the USB-driver so that the open source communitiy can take care of the problem.
G4 Ibook, among others   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

have you tried installing iScroll? I'm pretty sure it
should work...by USB trackpad are you referring to a
trackpad plugged in to your USB port?!? (".)
Maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough in my OP:
The late G4 iBooks have a "Apple Internal Trackpad" which is a USB-Device, whereas older models sport an ADB-trackpad. In the late iBooks ADB is no longer present.
On the iScroll2 page (http://iscroll2.sourceforge.net/) you will find the following information:
"Models that have two-finger scrolling already built-in are not supported! These use a completely different, USB-based trackpad, the driver or which is not available as open source. iScroll2 is based on Apple's AppleADBMouse-209.0.10 driver for the ADB-based trackpads found on older models, which is available as part of the publicly released Darwin source code.."
So again: The feature mentioned in the topic is not provided by Apple, nor is the USB driver source code publicly available making it quite unlikely the OSS community will come up with a solution.

  • Two finger right click on g4 ibook

    Hi guys,
I just got an ibook g4 and was wondering if there is such an option or program I can download in order to be able to right click using two fingers on the scroll pad like the MB and MBP.

Sidetrack will allow the right click, however, I believe you lose your ability to two-finger scroll.
    The FAQ states:
Q: Does SideTrack support two-finger scrolling on MacBooks and late-model PowerBooks and iBooks (2005 and later)?
A: Two-finger scrolling is a feature of the Apple driver for the USB trackpad hardware found in Apple laptops manufactured after 2005. Installing SideTrack will override the Apple driver and switch the trackpad to SideTrack's features. Support for two-finger scrolling on USB trackpads is being investigated and may appear in a future SideTrack release.
So you lose 2 finger scrolling but SideTrack allows you to scroll single finger.

  • Watching dvds with vlc-no right-click 'open with vlc' option as on the pc?

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:
when I want to watch a DVD on the laptop, i simply right-click the title and go for 'open with VLC' (which gives me the menu and so on) ... when I try to do this on the iMac, however, there is no
'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?
    thanx for your help!

If you want all video DVDs to open in VLC, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs>When you insert a video DVD:>Open other application> and now select VLC.
This will open VLC, but the DVD will not automatically play, you have to go to File>Open Disc once in VLC.
One question though, why not use Apple's DVD player Application?

  • Right click capability & a photo query

I am wondering if there's a way for me to have the right click capabilities one has in Windows. I have an OS X 10.3.9 on an iBook G4. There's a lot of things that I can't do because of not being able to have right click capabilities such as "save target as" etc.
My second question is about a way I can use a keyword shortcut to open up a series of files within a folder. I am a researcher and so take a lot of photos of documents and books. It is very inconvenient to use iPhoto to read documents since the window/frame for each photo is very small in iPhoto. So what I do is to just open up the image through Preview. My question is how I could open up let's say 100 photos in a single folder one after another with the fewest possible key and/or mouse touches. So I am looking for a way to read a 100 page book in the easiest way possible. In the long run, when we're talking about working on a dissertation, this saving of time matters greatly. Hope I was clear on the second question.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Ron_9,
Question 1: The 'right click' option on the mac can be achieved by pressing the "control" key as you click the left button on the mouse (or single button on the mouse pad). Or you can purchase an inexpensive USB mouse with left, right, and scroll buttons... That will make your work a little easier.
Question 2: Open the folder that contains the 100 pictures you want to view. Press the "command/Apple" and "a" keys at the same time. This will select all the files in that folder.
Now, press the control key and mouse pad button (or "right-click"), which should open a dialog box. Click on "open with", and click on "Preview." This should open all your pictures in Preview, and you can just scroll through them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Finder crashes when right click

    Hey,
I am having a problem with my finder crashing/restarting every time I want to right click or even if I want to ctrl+click on a file. It works if I want to right click on a folder but crashes every time when I right click on individual files. I am not sure what the problem is. Anyone able to help?
I am using a mighty mouse running 10.4.10 on an iBook G4.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the patch link DewChugr!

  • Applications crash when I right click

I am going to try to be as explicit as possible in hopes that this can get answered quickly. When I right click in certain programs i.e. Excel, Finder, ITunes, Word, etc... the program crashes. I can right click in some programs including Firefox, and the program menu. I am running 10.4.9. I do not have Stuffit 11 and have only one item in either of my contextual menu folders which is related to Roxio Toast (toastit).
I have tried the disk utility to fix permissions and I have also tried moving my desktop preferences from the preference folder to the desktop to make sure it wasn't some botched preferences.
I have a Logitech Mouse, although I don't think it is a mouse problem as I have tried unplugging the mouse, the computer crashes on CTRL + Click as well, even with the track pad. I have tried creating a new account and seeing if the problem persists on that account; it does. The first time I noticed this problem was after my friend plugged his PC formatted IPod into the comptuer through USB port I typically use for the mouse (might not be consequential but...). I am out of ideas. HELP!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Finder Crashes on "Right-Click" or "Control-Click"

I dont know if this is a PB or OS X problem. i'll probably post to both forums. on a brand-new PB 1.67 15" 2GB RAM - right-clicking in the finder windows, and only in the finder windows (other programs are fine) the Finder will crash and relaunch itself. this happens with a right-click mouse, control-click mouse and control-click with the trackpad. the only way around this is to use the "Gear" button on the top of the finder window to launch the right-click window.
anyone else having this issue? i have a feeling its a PB issue because i have received a bunch of iBooks and G5s in the last few weeks, brought all of them up to date with OS updates and programs, and only the PBs are having problems.
    eric

I tried trashing the Finder prefs already, no luck. creating a new user doesnt work either. its really weird. i can right click on the dock and in any program, but if i right click in a finder window or on the desktop, the Finder crashes and restarts.
i'm going to start uninstalling programs to see if that fixes the problem. i have a feeling that its an improper uninstall of Office X.
this is the only PB with this problem. the other PB that i have set up (still have another 4 in boxes) is having issues with iTunes and a new iPod. i think the problem is the iPod. its also being used by someone who have never used a Mac before. so i think the "problems" might be an inexperienced user. i'm the IT guy at a company of only 15 and trying to move from PC to Mac. and all the growing pains associated with that...
at least our Xsan with 4 HD editing systems is working. amazing how its always the little stuff that trips us up.

  • Can a Mouse right-click?

I'm confused. Will a mouse's right click still work on a Macbook? With my older iBook, my "Dell" two button mouse will give the contexual menu with a right click. My friend has a new Macbook and says the right click doesn't work. Is something wrong? Or do the new MacBooks not support the right-click? (i've read a bunch of mice related posts, but still confused.)
    Thanks!

I use the Logitech S530 and the mouse works just fine.
You can also right click using the trackpad, just set it up in the keyboard/mouse preferences panel.
Also, set up two-finger scrolling. You will love that!
    Good Luck.

  • MSOffice v.X crash on ctrl/right click

I have Microsoft Office v.X and I am happy with that, but after recent upgrade to Intel and Snow Leopard 10.6 from PPC iBook G4 Office programs like Word and Excel crashed after ctrl (or right mouse) click. Safe mode, updates - NOTHING helped. However, I took it serious what MS is saying about third parity contextual menus interfering with Office, and found
    /Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items /Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items
folder with ArlaCMM.bundle. I moved the whole folser to /Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items /Library/Contextual\ Menu\ Items\ Disabled and logged out and in again - and now I can right click in MS Word files, SOLVED! So here are some points:
    1) I want to share this result in hope it will be useful to someone
    2) Finder does not search /Libruary or ~/Libruary folder, nether it allow to rename subfolders there, so I used Terminal.

This is a solution for MS Word / Excel crashing after ctrl or right click in Leopard.

  • Right clicking

I must be missing something very simple here, but my daughter came home from college last night and while using her iBook noticed that I had to right click on dmg files, Adobe files, and a few others, and then choose "open" to open them. While not a big hassle, it is easier to just click on them so they open. Does anyone know how to change this so I can just click on a file to open it? Thanks in advance.

You can never just single-click on a file to open it. You need to double-click.

  • Creating a new document in Finder with right-click--How?

Is there a way to create a new document in a Finder folder by right-clicking (or Ctrl-left)? So that the new file will be created at that very spot, in that very folder.
In Windows-Explorer this was quick and easy. Just right-click and you could choose from a menu to create a new empty doc of the most popular (installed) programs. Text file was mandatory. The file was created where the curser was at. VERY handy as that way you didn't have to open the application, create a new doc and then when saving having to crawl your way all the way to the position in the Explorer/ Finder.
Since I started with Apple and Tiger I've been missing this feature and Snow Leopard still does not seem to have it. Or did I miss something? I checked all the menue as well. There's not even a "Create new document". Only a "Create new folder".
I was just reminded of this when I wanted to create a new file on an external drive on a server to save some text in it. There was no way other than first opening Textedit, saving the empty file on the local Mac, THEN transferring the empty file to the server. Only THEN I could open it and edit it.
There MUST be a quicker way.
Also, in Windows you could edit this list in the menu (and add programs that would not by themselves do this). Is there a way for the Mac?
    Cheers,
    Jay

I might have just found a solution myself:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10432377?messageID=10432377&amp%3b#1043237 7
It seems other people are wondering too.
And for those of you who don't understand why this is useful: Try it.
Open Textedit, Apple-N, and then save the darned file somewhere deep in the labyrinth of the Finder where you've just been but withouth the file. It takes AGES.
I, on the other hand -- at least in Windows --, right-click, new, double-click AAAND I'm on editing the file.
    VERY quick.
It's beyond me why this is not possible on a Mac.

  • Is there a way to open the right click menu on the left side of your pointer?

Whenever I try to right-click an object that's located on the right side of the screen, the pointer always automatically click whatever entry in the right-click menu which just happens to be under the pointer the moment the menu is opened. I noticed that the reason this happens is because the right click menu always forces itself to open on the right side of the pointer, and when there isn't enough space, the right-click menu will open underneath the pointer. Since this is horribly inconvenient, is there a way to open the right-click menu on the left side of your pointer?

Are you saying you have an icon on the far right side and when you rt click on it, your pointer ends up opening wherever it lands? That is a two step process, or normally should be at least a two step process. Do you have a Mouse in your Control Panel? You should check, because there may be some properties with which you can play. For instance, I can switch primary and secondary functions on my mouse buttons by checking a box.
When I rt click on right side, the menu opens on the left.
When I rt click on left side, the menu opens on the right.
In order for me to take an action, I then have to move to an area in that menu and click.
I hope I understood your question correctly.

  • TWO CRITICAL BUGS: 1) File, "Save Page As" and 2) right-click the picture and select "Save Image As", both do not work at all in Firefox 27, 28, and 29!

Note: capitals are used only to highlight important words.
PLEASE, TAKE THESE COMMENTS ON TWO CRITICAL BUGS VERY SERIOUSLY BECAUSE THE BUGS DESCRIBED BELOW ARE SO CRITICAL THAT I CANNOT USE THE LATEST VERSION OF FIREFOX UNLESS THEY DO NOT APPEAR IN THE LATEST VERSION AND THEREFORE I AM FORCED TO REVERT BACK TO FIREFOX 26.
I have Windows 7 64-bit and Firefox 26. I could not install Firefox 27, 28, and 29 due to the persistent presence of the two critical bugs described below. I have 8 GB of RAM and an Intel quad-core processor and a lot of hard disk space available.
I installed Firefox 27 and then Firefox 28 a while back and these two bugs described below were still present and now I have just checked again with Firefox 29 by installing it and yet again, these two bugs described below are present!! UNBELIEVABLE THAT THESE TWO CRITICAL BUGS ARE STILL PRESENT IN FIREFOX 29 WHEN I CLEARLY INFORMED YOU ABOUT THEM IN THE HELP, SUBMIT LINK OF FIREFOX!!
I am forced to revert to Firefox 26!
First, I use Windows 7 64-bit and I always use Firefox with at least 120 tabs opened. BUT I have 8 GB of RAM, an Intel core i7 quad-core processor and more than 1 TB of hard disk space. Consequently, I do not understand why I would have these two critical bugs.
With Firefox 26, I also have at least 120 tabs opened when I start Firefox and I do not have the two critical bugs described below, therefore I do not believe that the number of tabs is the reason of the two critical bugs that are present in Firefox 27, 28, and 29.
    ---FIRST CRITICAL BUG:
When I open ANY web page and do File, "Save Page As", the window that is supposed to open to locate the folder where I want to save this web page does NOT open at all, even if I wait a long time to see if it opens.
Same problem happened with Firefox 27, 28, and now 29!! When I reverted back to Firefox 26, this problem did NOT happen anymore!
    ---SECOND CRITICAL BUG:
When I use Google Images, for instance entering model in the search field of Google Images and then pressing enter.
Then I select any picture, open to a new tab this selected picture, then open a new tab by selecting the option View for this picture. Then right-click the picture and select "Save Image As".
Again, the window that is supposed to open to locate the folder where I want to save this picture does NOT open at all, even if I wait a long time to see if it opens.
Same problem happened with Firefox 27, 28, and now 29!! When I reverted back to Firefox 26, this problem did NOT happen anymore!
---THESE TWO CRITICAL BUGS DO NOT APPEAR WHEN I USE INTERNET EXPLORER 11.
I have no idea if you will be able to reproduce these two critical BUGS but I can assure you that they are not present when I use Firefox 26 and they are present when I use Firefox 27, 28, and 29. More, be aware that I have at least 100 tabs opened but I also have this same number of tabs opened in Firefox 26 and yet I do not experience these two critical bugs when I have Firefox 26!
Once again, these two bugs touch at two vital, critical very basic functions of Firefox and therefore I will NOT be able to use any version above 26 if these two bugs are still present, as they are present in Firefox 27, 28, and now 29!!!
Please, make it a priority to solve these two critical bugs. Thanks.
I did read a post related to the same issues “Firefox stops responding when trying to "save page" or "save image" | Firefox Support Forum | Mozilla Support” at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/991630?esab=a&as=aaq
I am still reading it again to try to figure out exactly what the person did to make his problems be solved, as the post is not clear at all on what solved the problems!
In any case, all the suggestions proposed in this post do not work and I surely cannot do a system restore when it is obvious that the two bugs do not appear in Internet Explorer.

First, I sent an email to the author of PhotoME to inform him of the serious issues his addon caused with Firefox latest versions.
Now, for those of you who do not have the PhotoME addon and yet experience the same problem that I had and that I described above, I suggest the following strategy.
As PhotoME did cause these problems with Firefox latest versions, I am pretty covinved other addons probably might cause these problems too. Therefore, adopt the following method.
Test one addon at a time to see if this particular addon is behind your Firefox issues like the ones I had.
So, disable one addon only at a time. Then close your Firefox and restart it from scratch and see if you still have your Firefox problems. You must restart the Firefox browser from scratch. If you still have these Firefox problems, re-enable the disabled addon, restart your Firefox (again!) and repeat the same method for every single addon that you have.
Try to be selective by choosing first addons that are more likely to cause your Firefox problems such as not very well-known or not very popular addons (like it was the case for the PhotoME addon).
If this method works or if it does not work, report it on this web page so that others can be helped with your comments.
I hope this method will help you because I was really upset that I had these Firefox problems and I first thought it was the fault of Firefox, only to discover later that this PhotoME addon was the culprit and had caused me such upset.

  • Unable to select an image with right click of the mouse

When in Library mode using grid view, right clicking on a thumbnail does not select the thumbnail, and previously selected items remain selected. If you then try to delete the item, you can inadvertently delete multiple items that you did not intend to delete and not the item you wanted to delete.
Right clicking on an already selected image or one of a group of selected images works and all selected images can be deleted. However a right click on a non selected image should should drop any current selections and select only the image clicked. (This can be verified in Bridge)
I am using Lightroom 1.3.1 in Windows XP SP2 with 2 gig of ram.

Have you switched your mouse buttons i.e have you changed assignments to your mouse buttons in the control panel?
If not, then clicking on an image will select it, CTRL-Click will select non-contiguous images, SHIFT-Click will select contiguous images.
Right-clicking will show a context menu. (and the context menu will change if you have single multiple images selected: e.g if you select two images you will see a menu item Open in Compare that is not there if only a single image is selected, Delete Photo... becomes Delete Photos... etc)
Also, in grid or filmstrip view you will see up to three levels of brightness on the frames around thumbnails:
-lightest frame: the active image i.e. the one that will be opened if you go to develop mode, or will be used as "source" for synchronize command etc
-medium: other images that you have selected.
-darkest: images that are not selected.
Selected images will also have a white frame immediately around the thumbnail.
