Right PSU for 6800, non Ultra or GT

I'll clarify that: its the GeForce 6800 OEM AGP version.
My PC company rightly said that the GT requires a 350w PSU, and that the Ultra needs a 420-480w PSU
My one is lower range than either Ultra or GT.
Yet it does have a fan, and also heatsinks top and bottom.
What I'd like to know from the boffins here is whether my FSP 250-60 GTV(PF) will cover it.
The PC company says yes but I am beginning to have my doubts
If any of you blokes could add an extra dimension, I'd be heaps grateful
I'm due to take delivery of it on either May 26th, or May 27th.
If I know one way or the other I'll be able to take a prompt decision
Thanks

I'm going for the    Akasa Paxpower Ultra Quiet 460w ATX2.0 PSU (blue LED)
With dual 12v rails, the specs pass that calc with flying colours
3.3v = 30A; 5v = 30A; 12v(1) = 14A; 12v(2) = 15A
Lots of the reviews from Trusted Raeviews.com rate it very highly
For £56+ P&P, its worth the investment
I'll probably order it Tuesday
There's a final new post about this entitiled Many Thanks to Supershanks and all, it has the same stuff as this modified one, so if it's superfluous, delete it....lol
Many Thanks, Supershanks

  • Minimum ratings of PSU for 6800 Standard?

I have just received MSI Geforce 6800 and found the package that says it requires at least 350 watts.  My case has 350 watts but it is called Eagle with:
    3.3v - 28A
    5v    - 35A
    12V  - 16A
The case which comes with 350w I bought one and half year ago and it is worth cheap £30 therefore PSU is cheap and nasty?  I'm not sure whether to go ahead and buy a proper PSU but I would have to order from England as the computer shops in N Irelands are crap!
As you might wonder why I am posting this.  After installing 6800 card, my computer is running with 3DMark03 test but then last night during Troll's Cave in CPU testing freezes & unresponsive so I had to reset my computer.   Today, I started running 3DMark03 but the text looks fuzzy or something...I had to stop it for the sake of my 6800.
Could PSU be responsible for it?  I just wished that MSI should state the PSU minimum requirement so that I can make order for both card and PSU at the same time.
    Thanks in advance

    Antec PS question
What more do you want? Wonkanoby said it short and neat.
    I'll elaborate...
For starters, looking at your hardware in that link you provided, I would never match up my current hardware (investment) with that power supply except in the minimalistic conditions. Such as just one drive, one optical and a midrange VGA card, perhaps a sound card, but that's about it. The voltages you supplied are from idle? Perhaps you should download and install MBM5 and get an average over time as MBM5 does that.
Run a graphic intensive game for an hour or so, then look at the average in MBM5 on the 12v rail, then you will get a good idea of the load capabilities.
IMHO that is bare butt minimum for your system and you increase the risk of damaging your investment when you push a PSU beyond it's capabilities. Don't forget that if you have poor cooling, the PSU's efficiency drops and you are not getting the rated power. Seems as if you don't have a cooling problem as you don't have any problems.
Yes, overkill is a good thing when it comes to a $100 part that is the heart of your investment costing upwards of $1000. Seems a small pennance for proper operation and a peice of mind.

  • The Right PSU for my system

If i want to build a system having the following spec what size psu do you think i need ?? 500 W or 550 W or 600 W or ???
    MSI P6N SLI Platinum
    intel Q6600
EVo 120 akasa heatsink and fan
two grahic card dual core 8 pins
    8 GB  pc6400
sata 1 dvd RW drive, IDE 1 cd drive. one floppy, one hard drive sata2   10000 GB HDD,
    No overclocking
    Many thanks

You need to review your Spec in the Sig - most of it is "very unclear" to say the least. The "graphics cards" are completely anonymous.... for instance.
    MSI P6N SLI Platinum
    Q6600
    MSI 256 graphic card ATI
    2 GB crucal pc6400
    psu  3200Watts
    window xpsp2
1 dvd drive, 1 cd drive 1 10000 GB HDD, 1 flopy, two graphic card
Try this - it will give you a good idea of what you will need. Then you can make your own judgement.

  • PSU Query for MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU running 3000xp

    Hi There,
Before buying a new Motherboard I was just wondering if the problems I'm getting are related to the PSU which is about 5 years old. I've just upgraded my processor to a Athlon 3000 XP 333 FSB which goes into the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E v1.X) motherbaord, which I've upgraded the Bios to version 5.7, I've also  upgraded my graphics card to the Leadtek Geforce FX5900XT which also plugs into the PSU. When setting my fsb to 166 my PC either won't boot or when I try to run say 3DMark it just freezes, but when I set my FSB to 133 it works fine. I was wondering if it is trying to draw too much power from the CPU.
I don't really know how to write the PSU details down correctly so I've just copied everything from the unit.

  • Donwloading right OS for Sun Ultra 40 M2

Please help I will appreciate your help, I am trying to download the OS Solaris on the web for a Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstation machine. Please some one guide me the steps by step or path to download it. My problem I don't understand what to select the Sparks or 64/32. On the manual it says it is a x64 but when I type the uname -X command I get Machine = i86pc, Release =5.10, Generic_118855-33. I am wondering if this machine was installed right way.

    x64:
    x = x86-based processor which = i86pc Machine

  • Best setup for a non-Mac file server?

I have a dual xeon server, with a SATA RAID5 I want to use as a file server in a cross-platform environment.
*What I've tried and the issues...*
At first I considered using Windows 2003 (Win2k3) but Services for Macintosh (SFM) is an older version of AFP and thus only supports 31 character filenames. With all our Macs supporting SMB/Samba/CIFS and Apple touting that "Macs and PCs can co-exist harmoniously on the same network" I figured I would give that a try.
    SMB doesn't work.
Sure I can create a connection, but transferring files is a completely different story. I'm trying to backup application and system data, but companies such as Adobe and Apple have named some of their files with special characters that can't be transferred over SMB. I know NTFS doesn't support these characters, but I though a Linux box using SMB would work fine. It doesn't. It's the protocol which keeps me from transferring the data. I end up with the lovely error message of "You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination..." (what's sad is, if you google for " because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination" you only get 6 results.)
So I thought I would give NFS a try. Apple says "Viewed from Mac OS X, [connecting via NFS] is just like connecting to an Apple or Windows server." No. It's not. NFS shares don't even show up in the Finder's Network listing. There are also a pile of other hurdles which are only tackled by savvy, command-line using users.
So that leaves me with AFP. Win2k3 doesn't support filenames longer than 31 characters, and Win2k8 is dropping SFM altogether. Off to choose a *nix flavor, but that requires Netatalk. It hasn't been updated in years, it has many bad performance reviews... and most distros have removed it. I can download and install it. Oh, but that requires I get the kernel source files. Then I have to create an RPM an that's not working... now I'm several levels deep in trying to figure out how to get Netatalk working and I'm not even sure it will work.
*What's the best setup for a non-Mac file server?*
FreeNAS seems promising, but it's in alpha/beta and they have all sorts of warnings regarding potential data loss. Sure there's ExtremeZ-IP, but I really don't want to spend $675 do something Apple claims OS X can already do. I can put just about any non-Mac OS on this thing... what's the best way to set it up so it works?
    Thanks much.

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • Best way to have resizeable LUNS for datafiles - non RAC system

    All,
(thanks Avi for the help so far, I know its a holiday there so I wait for your return and see if any other users can chip in also)
one of our systems (many on the go here) is being provided by an external vendor - I am reviewing their design and I have some concerns about the LUN's to house the datafiles:
they dont want to pre-assign full size luns - sized for future growth - and want more flexibility to give each env less disk space in the beginning and allocate more as each env grows
they are not going to use RAC (the system has nowhere near the uptime/capacity reqs - and we are removing it as it has caused enormous issues with the previous vendors and their lack of skills with it - we want simplicity)
They have said they do not want to use ASM (I have asked for that previously I think they have never used it before - I may be able to change their minds on this but they are saying as not RAC not needed)
but they are wondering how they give smaller luns to the env and increase size as they grow - but dont want to forever be adding /u0X /u0Y /u0Z extra filesystems (ebusiness suite rapidclone doesn't like working with many filesystem anyway and I find it unelegant to have so many mount points)
they have suggested using large ovm repo's and serving the data filesystems out of that (i have told them to use the repo's just for the guest OS's and use direct phy's attached luns for datafiles (5TB of them)
now they have suggested creating a large LUN (large enuogh for many envs at the same time [dev / test1 / test2 etc]) .... and putting OCFS2 on it so that they can mount it to all the domU/guest's and they can allocate space as needed uot of that:
so that they have guests/VM's (DEV1 - DEV2 - TEST1 say) (all seperate vm's) and all mounting the same OCFS2 cluster filesystem (as /u01 maybe) and they can share that for the datafiles under a sep dir so that each DB VM would see:
/u01/ and as subdirectories to that DEV1 DEV2 TEST1 so:
    /u01/DEV1
    /u01/DEV2
    /u01/TEST1
and only use the right directory for each guests datafiles (thus sharing the space in u01(the big LUN) as needed per env)....
i really dont like that as each guest is going to have the same oracle unix user details and able to write to each other dir's - id prefer dedicated LUNS for each VM - not mounted to many VM's
so I am looking for a way to suggest something better....
should I just insist on ASM (but this is a risk as I fear they are not experienced with it)
or go with OEL/RHEL LVM and standard ext filesystems that can be extended - what are the risks with this? (On A Linux Guest For OVM, Which Partitions Can Be LVM? [ID 1080783.1]) - seems to say there is little performance impact
    or is there another option?
    Thanks all
    Martin
Edited by: Martin Brambley on 11-Jun-2012 08:53

Martin, what route did you end up going?
We are about to deploy several hundred OEL VMs that are going to run non-RAC database instances. We don't plan to use ASM either. Our plan right now is to use one large 3TB LUN virtual disk to carve out the operating system space for the VMs and then have a separate physical attached LUN for each VM that will host a /u01 filesystem using LVM. I have concerns with this as we don't know how much space /u01 will ultimately need and if we end up having to extend /u01 on all of these VMs, that sounds like it will be messy. Right now I've got 400 separate 25gb LUNs presented to all of my OVM servers that we plan to use for /u01 filesystems.

  • MSI GeForce FX5700 TD128(non Ultra) MEMORY BANDWIDTH

    Hello to all...
I have 1 question please. I want to know the real memory bandwidth for MSI
GeForce FX5700 TD128(memory: Samsung). I found on MSI website this :
GeForce FX 5700 Graphics Core: 256-bit
    Memory Interface: 128-bit
    Memory Bandwidth: 14.4GB/sec.
    Fill Rate: 1.7 billion pixels/sec.
    Vertices/sec. 356 million
    Memory Data Rate: 550 MHz
    Pixels per Clock (peak): 4
    Textures per Pixel: 16
    RAMDACs 400 MHz
in MSI FX Series Quick User's Guide i found No. for memory bandwidth 8,8!!! GB/sec(MSI GeForce FX5700 TD128)
    Quick User's Guide Version: 5.0, November 2003, G52-V1NFX07
    Please remail and explain.
    Thanks
    TT

14.4 is the bandwidth for the Ultra so I assume it isn't the same on the non ultra.
You can calculate it by finding the rated timing of the memory chips and therfore the memory clock (approximatly).
For instance 2.8ns (should be marked on the chip -28) is 1/2.8ns=357MHz.
Using DDR it is effectively 714MHz, and using 128bit wide BUS you get 11.4GB/S

  • New PSU for MSI P67S-C43 (B3) with new graphics card.

    Good morning!
I'm in the market for a new PSU for my system (specs in signature). I think the current PSU I have would be sufficient for the graphics card I'm looking at getting,  GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ (EVGA 04G-P4-3687-KR), however, I'd like to go modular. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    like_a_god

A GTX680 system pulls less exactly same power like the same system with GTX260 (both 38A minimum without oc). So in terms of power there is no need for psu upgrade as the TX650 could handle a GTX680 with ease. Considering an oc card it might be 40A required minimum.
None the less this is a MSI forum so next time please don't ask for psu upgrades for an EVGA card. Better get an MSI card instead like N680GTX Lightning or N680GTX Twin Frozr 4GD5/OC (if you need 4GB).
If you want to upgarde the psu just because of it being modular then go for an 850w psu to have a noticeable power upgrade also. The HX850 is then the better choice. If you want a fully modular unit it would take AX850 instead.

    Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
If both the above tests pass, try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties.  Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'.  In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start.  Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take several hours to complete before loading back into Windows.
