Right USB 2.0 port running slow - seems to be stuck in 1.1
I'm running an old MBA from 2011 (A1370) The right side USB is playing up:
it randomly ejects external HDDs and thumb drives
often it doesn't even register that something has been plugged in
drives plugged into the right port are opperating at about 1/8 speed compared to the left port.
Any ideas how to figure if it's a software or a hardware issue?

USB 3.0 port running at 2.0 speed
Yes the the the yellow marked driver is installed exactly as you have shown. But the usb device tree viewer software is indicating that the device is working as usb 2.0. Also I tried to do use the "Crystal Disk mark" to check the speeds, and the speeds were corresponding to USB 2.0. The official HP website doesnt have usb 3.0 drivers listed as it has been done for earlier OS such as Win 8 or Win 7. I have 2 hard disks, both are USB 3.0 so I dont think that there is any problem in the hard disks. HD 1 - Toshiba Canvio 1.0 TB and HD 2 - Seagate Expansion Portable 1.0 TB.
I was using win7 so far and had no issues. Recent upgrade to Win10 has caused me this problem. My laptop has 3 usb ports, 2 of which are USB2.0 and one is USB 3.0. However the USB 3.0 port is running at speeds of USB 2.0. My harddisk is seagate expansaion portable 1.0 TB. Any solutions. I have already done successful online update of all drivers.

Right USB Port faster than left (MBP 15 2013) ?
Hello guys,
I just installed Drive Genius 3. Im assuming bad sectors on my external hard drive. When I connect the drive on the left usb next to thunderbolt normal scanning says can take up to 8/9 hours.
Plugging it into the right USB port only says around 3,5 hrs.
Is there a difference in speed?
One more question:
Dont all new drives have SMART? My latest WD Elements says it has no SMART Status. So I cant find out any bad sectors except by doing a scan with Drive Genius? The thing is, when I use an adaptor with the keyboard, it works fine in Logic. But the USB port cant seem to power the keybaord like the left one can. Could the USB port on the left really be broken if it is working with Logic with the adaptor?

Macbook Pro right USB port disconnects
Hi - When using the dialup modem adapter in the right USB port it will disconnect after 3-4 minutes but works fine in the left port. Flash drives & scanner seem to work OK in the right.
Also, a friend has computerized embroidery sewing machine and the right port does not recognized it but the left does on her MAC.
Are Macs were bought a couple weeks apart.
Is there a setting for each USB port that maybe wrong or is this just a defect?Well, does that link...

Hello,
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Airport/Wifi & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right? -
My mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday
my mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday, i purchased it used an don't have disc or password
The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. -
Just like the title says: my USB 3.0 port seems to be very touchy...even the slightest nudge of whatever's plugged in will cause it to play the device-disconnected chime (but then nearly immediately play the device-reconnected chime).
Is this a known issue?
And what do I do to fix? I assume it's a HARDWARE rather than a software problem, because it's a physical nudge that seems to prompt the disconnect/reconnect...so is this something that i'll need to open my computer to fix? It's not under warranty anymore...Hi there @BarryKatz1
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you have an intermittent USB connection and that the connector seems loose. I am happy to help, and as you surmise, this is more of a hardware issue.
I certainly feel your pain, I have a notebook that my young son pulled down (more than once) and each time I lost a USB port due to damage, and of the three I had on that notebook, only one still functions.
The port is a part of the notebook's mainboard, so the main remedy is a board replacement. You will find the part and part numbers in the service guide, on page 25 of 81.
HP Spectre 13 Pro Ultrabook and HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook Maintenance and Service Guide
About the only other thing you can try is a new USB cable for the device, just in case the problem is more cable related.
I hope this helps.

Applications seem to be running slower on Lion & Mail doesn't work well
My applications like iPhoto, Safari, and Mail all seem to be running slower and slower. They were lightning-like right after I installed Lion, but now it seems to be running more slowly every day terrible. Reloading a page or opening a new tab in Safari is Very S L O W....and iPhoto seems to go into a loop or something, and takes forever to come out of it.
We also installed a Time Capsule, so maybe that's the problem, but does anyone else have suggestions on things we should do to improve performance?
The other - bigger - problem is sending mail. I keep getting the message that "cannot send mail on the selected server," and that it has timed out. It's the server I have been using, so I am baffled. The name of the server is smtp.me.com:myusername
Should I change it??? but to what????
Can you tell I'm a total novice at trouble-shooting? Well...I am! so I sure hope someone can help. That's assuming PS was build to not do it. Scratch disks and display tiles are a fundamental principle of the program and I don't consider them a workaround for anything. You know, over in the video apps forums we poor souls have been begging for years that After Effects would be half as smart as PS in that regard. I also tend to think that your alleged "do it all in RAM" would fall apart as soon as you begin to deal with a number of images and document sizes that exhaust that RAM. One might say that in foreseeable time RAM will be so dirt cheap, that 32GB machines will be commonplace even for home users, but it's not there yet. And then it's the question: Do I burn 1000 Watts of electricity even in idle state just to work on a monster machine with lots of RAM or do I use just 300 Watts on a normal system with a scratch disk and energy saving options. It's the same gag as with multicore processors or those monstrous graphics cards (Quadro CX, anyone?): the marketing may tell you, you need those things, but it must not necessarily do anything for your personal workflow. Those arguments really have no value if this Quadro CX has nothing to do most of the time or of 16 cores only 1 barely even peaks while you paint and likewise you wouldn't need those tons of RAM, if all you ever do is adjusting a few photos from digital cameras. You have to differentiate between "average" users and extreme "power users", but nowhere is it written that 1% of power users must or can dictate what's good for the 99% other users, a dilemma software devs face every day... I would tend to think that 64bit and its possible advantages are in fact very low on the list for those 99% of users, but other things are much more important to them.

Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2
Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
Steps I've taken:

Nothing out of the ordinairy. Thanks for any helpIt's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

My Mac feels as if it is running slower these last couple of months. I have thought of pursuing a commercially available "clean up" product, but thought I would try the community first and also for pointers using the Mac's own internal diagnostics or system improvement capabilities. Any and all advice is most welcome. I have a 250GB hard drive that is half full, I always update to latest revisions and have an extra high-speed internet connection. Computer is not heavily loaded with apps and typically using Firefox for browsing. (MS Office for Mac as well, but usually limited to one program such as MS Word or Excel at a time.) No heavy graphics utilization. Videos from the internet load slowly and some are choppy. Even scrolling just doesn't seem "brisk".
Thank you,
TomDisconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab. Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Now select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log – the text, please, not a screenshot. If there are repeats, please post only one example of each repeated message. -
USB 2.0 port no longer recognizes ext. HD; USB 3.0 seems fine W510
Have had several BSODs in last few days. Two of most recent referred to nusb3xhc.sys
Other symptoms: I have 3 WesternDigital 500GB ext. USB 2.0 HDs none of which are being recognized even when plugging directly in to laptop USB port rather than USB hub I usually use. Same USB port will show a small thumb drive. USB 3.0 laptop port still works. While the WD HDs are all older, worked several days ago but now never show up in Windows Explorer and the tray icon for USB never shows them as I typically click on the latter to eject an ext. USB HD.
Recent changes to laptop:
1) 6.1.2014 installed MS OneDrive (and also on tablet). version 17.0.4041.0512
2) Control Panel add/remove programs shows that Dropbox installed version 2.8.2 just before OneDrive
3) Subsequent to above I did routine Windows update of Important items with no problems. However for several years since about IE 9 or perhaps 10, I have been unable to get IE to install and work, and have been using Chrome for years. I mention this to give fuller picture, but doubt that it is related to current issue.
4) Aside from typical routine updates e.g. Java, Bitdefender antivirus I have not intentionally installed any other software recently.
============
I have barely begun using MS OneDrive so am happy to uninstall it, or go to restore point prior to its installation. BSOD prior to this might have occurred 1 or 2x per year.
I'm pretty good at following directions if they are complete e.g. need full path if you want me to find something on my HD.
Lenovo website for machine type 4318CTO running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit indicates that driver version for USB 3.0 dated 1/22/2010 versin 1.0.19.0 is up to date and that it is NEC device. Device Manager also says is up to date. There is one USB 3.0 port on rear of laptop and two USB 2.0 on side. HP website shows more recent NEC USB 3.0 driver dated 9/16/2011 version 2.0.32.0
Thanks for your knowledge, skill, and help.I always thought that high-speed USB was USB 1.1. I thought that USB 2.0 was full-speed. But my iMac Core 2 Duo has USB 2.0 (I'm sure) and it says that my iMac has a USB High-speed bus.
Your PowerBook G4 might need service, go to your local Apple Store and see someone there about it. I'm pretty sure that you have a hardware problem.
Steps:
1. Try connecting another USB 2.0 device to that same port. If the device works you have a problem with your iPod. (This is a long shot.) If this happens you should reinstall iPod software.
2. Try reinstalling iTunes.
3. Try calling AppleCare technical support.
4. Try reinstalling Mac OS X. (If AppleCare hasn't told you do this already.)
5. You have a hardware problem. Go to an Apple Store to get it fixed. -
Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple? I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!
Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

My 24” iMac seems to gets the spinning colored ball a lot, seems it is running slow a lot more than it did before any suggestion?
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
my mac is running slow, the spinning beach ball constantly appears. it seems that when i am in the apple store with fast wifi its a bit better. genius at the apple store checked the hard drive, it's all fine. what can it be? can it be a software issue with the wifi?
also i noted that it has only been doing this since quite recently, before it was fine
please help!First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
I recently updated? to Lion from 10.6.8(snow leopard), and things seem to be running slower. Has anyone had similar problems? I have Feb 2011 Macbook pro 13" 2.3 Ghz.
As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.
