Right USB Port faster than left (MBP 15 2013) ?

Hello guys,
I just installed Drive Genius 3. Im assuming bad sectors on my external hard drive. When I connect the drive on the left usb next to thunderbolt normal scanning says can take up to 8/9 hours.
Plugging it into the right USB port only says around 3,5 hrs.
Is there a difference in speed?
One more question:
Dont all new drives have SMART? My latest WD Elements says it has no SMART Status. So I cant find out any bad sectors except by doing a scan with Drive Genius?

The thing is, when I use an adaptor with the keyboard, it works fine in Logic. But the USB port cant seem to power the keybaord like the left one can. Could the USB port on the left really be broken if it is working with Logic with the adaptor?

  • Right USB port has exactly the same tasks as the left side one?

I v a USB sound cart (MBox 1 by digidesign)
Wen I use togeteher with it an external hard disk connected with USB (some time the fire wire is occupied by another hard disk) if the USB hard disk is on the left side (looking the screen) and the MBox on the right...the hard disk start making a "periodic" sound similar to a metronome and it doesn't run....if I invert the positions it work fine.
Is this normal ? The USB port works fine with the MBOX but with the USB Lacie hard disk is not working....the other USB port is working fine with both.
Is an hardweare problem ? Since my MBP is 2 weeks old I would consider the idea to send it to fix this problem.

This sounds like the same problem I'm having with my MacBook Pro. For whatever reason the USB port on the left side of the machine does not provide sufficient power to spin up any USB bus-powered hard drive. The USB port on the right side of the machine works just fine for external USB bus-powered devices.
I have sent my system back to Apple to have this problem fixed. Unfortunately, their "repair" did not fix the problem at all. I just got off the phone with Apple again, and they are going to re-repair my system again.
I would suggest that you try an experiment with your USB hard-drive. Just plug it into the left side port without having any other USB devices plugged into the right side. Check if the drive just clicks and does not spin up. Then try the same thing with the USB port on the right side.
If you find that the drive works fine on the right, but not on the left, I would call Apple support for a repair. I do not think this is an isolated issue, but rather is probably a design issue with the systems. The issue should have been caught during testing before the MacBook Pro went into production, but obviously that is not the case. Hopefully if enough people complain about this Apple will take it seriously and fix the problem.
    Good luck.

  • MIDI controller is working in the right usb port, but it doesn't in left

    Hello all,
I have this strange problem, yesterday i bought MIDI keyboards it's M-AUDIO Keystation Mini 32
The problem is that when i connect it to right USB port it works flawlessly, but when i connect it to my left USB port - my macbook pro recognizes the device but it doesn't send any midi data - to put it in other way: it is not working.
I have checked, everything is working fine In the LEFT usb port( wireless mouse, external HDD, Flash drives, Iphone) except my MIDI Keyboard.
Can anyone help? i've been searching for days for the solution, but, i'm out of ideas.

    Hey,
i have the exact same problem! I was in the apple store and they replaced my macbook. then it just worked fine for a few days and now the problems is there  again.
Do you already have a solution?

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
    Steps I've taken:
    Disk Persmission
    PRAM
    SMC
    Reapplied the 10.9.2 update
    Sent feedback to Apple

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

  • Macbook Pro right USB port disconnects

Hi - When using the dialup modem adapter in the right USB port it will disconnect after 3-4 minutes but works fine in the left port. Flash drives & scanner seem to work OK in the right.
Also, a friend has computerized embroidery sewing machine and the right port does not recognized it but the left does on her MAC.
Are Macs were bought a couple weeks apart.
Is there a setting for each USB port that maybe wrong or is this just a defect?

    Well, does that link...
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/Usb/2006/Oct/msg00052.html
still lock up your Mac? No way it should have any such effect.

  • Are both the USB ports the same? (MBP 15" 2.2 Ghz)

I am trying to use an external HDD (not powered) on the left USB port but the drive fails to load. A memory stick and mouse connect to this port work fine. The port on the right works just fine.
Is there a difference between the left and right USB ports?

Although both ports should be identical this is a problem others have reported (including myself.) Devices that require all the power the USB port is capable of providing may only work on the right side port. This may be especially the case with external drives. There is no fix for this except to only use the right side port for an external drive.

  • Hp split x2 right USB port not working

I've had my hp split x2 for about a month now. Today I was using a wireless mouse in the right USB port. I closed the screen because I was going out and when I returned the right USB port was no longer recognizing the mouse. I plug the mouse into the left port everything works fine. I have an external hard drive that lights up when plugged into the USB slot. So I tried that in the right port. The drive lights up meaning the port is powering it but the computer does not recognize its there. I fiddle with the device drivers uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers. Nothing worked. I even went as far as reformatting windows. Still not working. Now I have a case open with hp to send it in to get it fixed but if there is a possible fix I would be much appreciated in hearing one. Thank you.

I'm having the same problem with my left USB port.  What do you find out?

  • Right USB Port not reading External HD

I'm using Mid 2014, Retina, 13-inch, Macbook Pro. I noticed that my right USB Port is not reading my 1 TB WD External HD but able to use mouse. How to fix it?

According to the fount of knowledge that is Wikipedia…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
As with previous USB versions, USB 3.0 ports come in low-power and high-power variants, providing 150 mA and 900 mA respectively, while simultaneously transmitting data at SuperSpeed rates.[25] Additionally, there is a Battery Charging Specification (Version 1.2 – December 2010), which increases the power handling capability to 1.5 A but does not allow concurrent data transmission.
It doesn't make sense to me that a 'low power' USB port would output 500ma unless it was working in USB2 mode.
A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 1.x and 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of five unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 1.x and 2.0, or six unit loads (900 mA) in USB 3.0.
You may want to get the genius to confirm the spec for both ports if you go along to a store, I guess they may have limitations.
I would also boot into recovery mode just to see if the disk pops up in Disk Utility via both ports - that could indicate the port is being rendered useless by the OS.
Apologies, you appear to have tried that already.

  • 2011 MBP - why is the optical port faster than the hard drive port?

In looking at an earlier discussion (April I think) I found a screen grab that showed a 15" MBP with a 6.0Gbp/s hard drive connection and a 3.0Gbp/s optical bay connection. That is image number one below.
Images two and three are from my brand new MBP 17". Can someone please explain the Link Speed and Negotiated Link Speed differnces? What is the 1.5 Gbp/s about?
I would appreciate any input guys.
    Thanks!
    Hugh

    Why did Apple change this?
9-pin FireWire ports use FireWire 800, which is faster than the old 6-pin FireWire 400 ports.
Is there an adapter I can buy so that I can backup my Macbook?
    Yes.

  • Right USB port out...and then comes back

I am getting no power in the USB port on the right hand side of my Powerbook.
This is problem happened last week for the first time and I am not sure what i did while trying to fix it, perhaps restarted, muted the sound....and the power came back on.
Now no device is able to draw any power from the port.
Could you guys please help me?

As it turns out, the USB failed. The Apple people kept my PB and sent it for repair.
I dropped by the genius bar and left it with them on Dec 14 being told it would take 10 business days or so to get it back.
My trackpad button was very stiff, it stuck and had to press harder than normal to click. This was in effect since I took it out of the box when I bought it. Never bothered as I use a Bluetooth Apple mouse. Now that they kept it for repair for the USB port, they will also fix the trackpad.

  • My iPhone 4 is not showing up in the left USB port on my Retina MBP. It does, however, show up in the right port. Thoughts on why?

It does not seem to matter if the computer is plugged into power, or if other devices are plugged into the other ports.
Can anyone tell me why, or give me solution?
    Thanks
    Jtsmith

There have been a number of reported problems with the USB 3 ports on the 2012 models. Several people  running Mountain Lion say that it 'fixes' the problems. Until then, see this Apple tech note - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Good luck - Mountain Lion is just around the corner and will hopefully fix some of the glitches.

  • M45-S331 no history of issues... 2 right usb ports and the touchpad have stopped working.

    Hi,
I'm really starting to give out of things to try to figure this out.  So this laptop was bought, brought home and sat on a little table and has been handled delicately.  I was happy to get it and it's never had an issue.  Like the title says, now the USBs on the right side (single left usb functioning) and the touchpad have just stopped doing anything.  I can't really say for sure exactly what was going on before it started to do that... I'm thinking it was working, I shut it down and maybe a day later I powered it up and noticed it probably as I was trying to log in.  I have: checked connections, board contacts, drivers, reinstalled windows... so I mean at that point there's probably nothing I can do... but all seems fine with the equipment from what I can see looking at it, add in the fact that the two aren't really exactly the same so for them both to go like that is odd... I just want to know what I'm not thinking to do as far as troubleshooting it...
I don't know if there's anything else I can provide, but if there is I'll have it...
    Thanks.

I'm beginning to think there's not too much more I can check.  I still think it's odd that the 2 usbs and the touchpad go out at the same time.

  • 17" MBP Left side usb ports and audio stopped working

    Hello All,
I have a situation here with my MBP. A couple months ago it stopped detecting my airport card (not installed), I replaced it with another one which still showed as not having a card installed. So, I have just been using a usb wifi adapter which has been working fine, but recently the 2 usb ports on the left side have stopped working as well as I lost any sound. I've tried with or without headphones, still no sound it just shows a greyed out speaker and a circle with a line through it when I try to adjust volume. My initial thought was that the left I/O board was bad, but the dc-in board continues to work which, I believe, is part of the left I/O board. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Is the machine at least 4 years old?  If it is symptoms you are getting is a sign the PRAM battery is about to go.  Get it replaced.  If not, try zapping the PRAM.

  • USB-Hub not working on LEFT USB port?

    Hello,
I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit on my MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2013) and it's running fine. Boot Camp version: 5.0.5033.
But I have one problem: I bought an external monitor (Dell U2414H) which has an built-in 4-Port USB 3.0 hub. So I connect the Dell monitor using a DisplayPort 1.2a cable and an USB 3.0 cable. But Windows only recognizes the monitor's built-in USB hub when I plug the USB cable into the right USB port (when I sit in front of the MacBook). Then it works without problems. But when I plug the USB cable into the left USB port of the MacBook Windows only says "USB device not recognized". But other devices like USB sticks and USB drives also work without problems on left and right USB port of the MacBook. Also when I boot in OS 10.9 Mavericks the monitor's USB hub is working on both USB ports of the MacBook. So I think it isn't a hardware failure. I also re-installed Windows, but I have still the same problem.
Do you have any idea, why only the monitor's built-in USB hub is not working in Windows on the left port of the MBP or even how I could fix it?
Is Boot Camp 5.0.5033 the most current version? I checked the box to download the latest Windows support software and also didn't find anything newer than 5.0.5033 to download, but sometimes I read about 5.1.1 - but where could I download it? AND: Doest it help?
    Thanks in advance!

I think I've hit a variation on the problem you're enoucntering.  I have a late-2013 13-inch Macbook Pro Retina.  I've just installed Boot Camp and a copy of Windows 7 Pro.  This is my first experience with Boot Camp and Windows on a Mac, so I'm in foreign teritory.
The install all went fine and Windows 7 booted up fine and so far, all hardware seems to be working as expected, with one exception.  Things went sideways when I tried use it in "clamshell" mode - lid closed with external monitors and all my peripherals attached to a USB hub.  I set up Boot Camp to boot into Windows and attempted to boot.  It would give me the usual boot-up fanfair and a then a gray screen for a few seconds, and then it would reboot.  It just rebooted over and over.   I eventually discovered the issue was the USB hub - without the hub connected , it would boot just fine.  Once it was booted into Windows, I could attach the the hub and everything would be recognized normally.  Furthermore, I could put the system in sleep mode, wake it up and everything would be working fine.  But it simply refuses to boot the USB hub attached.  I've stumbled on a couple related threads - see https://discussions.apple.com/message/23802231#23802231.  The suggestion is that only certain hubs to not work.  I've got two different high quality powered hubs and both display the same behaviour.  The other point is, that when booting into OS X with the same hub, it works perfectly.  So it's a strange problem.
Note that after reading your post, I did try the hub in both right and left USB ports and that made no difference in my case.  I do have one more hub to try (built into my Dell monitor).  I'll report back if that happens to work.

  • My Macbook Pro Retina's USB port on the right side not working at all

    Dear all,
I received my macbook pro 15inch with retina display a week ago, but not until today had I got the chance to use the USB port on the right side, only to find out that it is not connecting to anything at all. I have tried to use my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 with two different cables, my USB thumb drive, and my Blackberry 9900, none of them are charging nor shown in iTunes/Finder. All of above works on the left and on other windows machines too.
I'm also not able to charge my Blackberry with the usb port on the left side, thought it would pop up a message saying "charging not supported" on the phone.
For you information, I have applied both updates including the one released few days ago. I have also tried to reset the PRAM. Also, I have migrated from my old late 2008 13inch unibody Macbook using Migration Assistant, not sure if this would affect anything.
I'm aware that there have been reports and discussions regarding the USB port not been able to run devices on 3.0 speed, but I wonder if anyone else have the same problem with me, where the port simply not connecting to anything at all?

I also have a problem with the USB port on the right side of my Retina MBP.  The USB3.0 port on the left side works fine, even with high speed external SSD enclosures, like the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G which enables me to copy large files at a sustained rate of 160-170MB/sec.  Wow USB3.0 and the Mercury SSD is a FAAAAST combination connected to the Retina MBP.
However, like the forum entries about the USB3.0 ports in general on the new Retina MBP, the USB3.0 port on the RIGHT side is plagued with dropping intermittently, disconnecting my external hard drives while copying large files AS WELL AS disconnecting while just sitting there connected to an external hard drive and doing nothing.
Therefore, since I don't feel like returning my Retina MBP and waiting weeks for a replacement, I have chosen to only use the left side USB3.0 port for now.
I have my suspicions about why the right side USB port might be more problematic than the left side one.  I found this older post on the internet about how "Not all USB ports are created equal on MacBooks..." that talks about how on older models of MacBooks one of the USB ports shares a USB hub with multiple other devices like the iSight camera etc. therefore making it less tolerant of heavy traffic or something like that.  (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/05/the-macbook-all/)
Therefore, I wonder if the right side USB port is sharing a USB internal hub where-as the left side one is more 'dedicated' and therefore in my case able to handle the high speed transfers/traffic I am throwing at it with my external SSDs.
I have also read that USB3.0 in general, on non-Macs, has had trouble for years.  For instance, some forum entries on Apple Support Communities and other non-Apple forums has made mention that 'they' are not surprised at the problems encountered on USB3.0 external hard drives connected to the Retina MBP because Windows laptops have had a lot of flakey problems with USB3.0 for 'years'.
Also, I have recently purchased a "Buffalo" external Thunderbolt 1TB drive from OWC and have been doing Clones onto that drive for several weeks.  I use SuperDuper to clone >600GB of data on my 768GB Retina MBP several times a week.  And, I have (knock on wood) not had any problems with the stability of my externally connected Thunderbolt drive.
So, in my case, I am racking it up to high-speed stresses on the USB3.0 ports at least in part...and perhaps the possibility that the LEFT side USB port on the Retina MBP is more dependable and/or a more dedicated USB port than the right side one.
This doesn't really solve your problem, but it may at least help you feel like you are not alone.
