Right USB Port not reading External HD

I'm using Mid 2014, Retina, 13-inch, Macbook Pro. I noticed that my right USB Port is not reading my 1 TB WD External HD but able to use mouse. How to fix it?

According to the fount of knowledge that is Wikipedia…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
As with previous USB versions, USB 3.0 ports come in low-power and high-power variants, providing 150 mA and 900 mA respectively, while simultaneously transmitting data at SuperSpeed rates.[25] Additionally, there is a Battery Charging Specification (Version 1.2 – December 2010), which increases the power handling capability to 1.5 A but does not allow concurrent data transmission.
It doesn't make sense to me that a 'low power' USB port would output 500ma unless it was working in USB2 mode.
A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 1.x and 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of five unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 1.x and 2.0, or six unit loads (900 mA) in USB 3.0.
You may want to get the genius to confirm the spec for both ports if you go along to a store, I guess they may have limitations.
I would also boot into recovery mode just to see if the disk pops up in Disk Utility via both ports - that could indicate the port is being rendered useless by the OS.
Apologies, you appear to have tried that already.

  • USB Port not reading External Hard Drive

I have a WD External Hard Drive, it has worked well in the past, but all of a sudden it has stopped working when plugged into my USB port. I can't see it in my finder window at all so I can't access any of the files. BUT, it does show up when I open Disk Utility. Why has my Macbook stopped picking up the Hard Drive? Why does Disk Utility recognize it and not allow me to access the information? Please help.

I can click on it and choose to repair or verify it. But neither work to gain access to the information. The Hard Drive shows up in a light grey text somehow signifying that Disk Utility isn't able to tell you what is on the Drive, so it can't tell me how much is stored or how much space is still available for storage. With other Hard Drives, they show up in black text and are able to tell me this information. Is there something else I should try besides verify and repair?

  • Hp split x2 right USB port not working

I've had my hp split x2 for about a month now. Today I was using a wireless mouse in the right USB port. I closed the screen because I was going out and when I returned the right USB port was no longer recognizing the mouse. I plug the mouse into the left port everything works fine. I have an external hard drive that lights up when plugged into the USB slot. So I tried that in the right port. The drive lights up meaning the port is powering it but the computer does not recognize its there. I fiddle with the device drivers uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers. Nothing worked. I even went as far as reformatting windows. Still not working. Now I have a case open with hp to send it in to get it fixed but if there is a possible fix I would be much appreciated in hearing one. Thank you.

I'm having the same problem with my left USB port.  What do you find out?

  • HT2494 USB ports not mounting external drives. Would appreciate a way to troubleshoot. Thanks

My MacBook Pro is no longer displaying the drives I plug into the USB ports.
Could someone tell me what might be wrong and how to troubleshoot? It's still under warrantee, thank goodness.
    Many thanks to all,
    Natalie

I've noticed the Firewire bus to be less stable under Intel chips, but I'm not positive. It may be that my devices are just getting tired.
Anyhow... troubleshooting (when was the last time you cleared the PRAM?)
    1. Turn off your MacBook (not restart, power off)
    2. Turn it back on, wait for it to fully startup
    3. With the power connected and the drive turned on, connect the Firewire drive
If it still doesn't work, can you try a different Firewire cable? I'm guessing the cable probably works fine on your iBok G4, right? If it still doesn't work, it would seem that the Firewire port is not working properly. You can also try booting up with your install DVD and see if Disk Utility can read your Firewire drive. If it does then you might need to reinstall OS X.
    USB portable drive
Repeat steps 1 and 2 above
    3. Plug your MacBook into AC power (my USB drive will not mount unless I plug into AC power)
    4. Connect your USB drive
Again, I'm guessing this drive too works fine with your iBook?
You could try accessing the drive while booting up from the install DVD too. This should rule out whether it is a software or hardware problem.
It's a hardware problem if you can't access either the Firewire or USB drive (on AC power) while booting up from your install DVD. It's a software problem if you can.
    Good luck

  • USB ports not recognizing external drive

My external (backup) drives are not regularly showing up when plugged in to the USB port.

Start by looking for the drive in the Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu's far left Apple logo>About This Mac>More Info>Hardware (in left column) >USB.) If the drive is correctly powered and connected, it will show up here.
If it doesn't show up, the problem is with the drive. With the drive plugged in, put your ear to the drive and listen for the whirring sound the drive makes when it is powered up. If it isn't making any sound, ot's either a bad drive or a bad power supply.
If the drive is making sound , then the problem is probably the USB cable or your USB port. Try a different USB cable. This should fix the problem; if all the above tests were good and the drive still doesn't mount, it may be the USB controller in the Mac. That's a serious problem that requires repair or installation of an aftermarket USB controller.
    Hope this helps

  • Replacement HP Right single USB Port not working

I ordered a replacement USB Port (Single right side - only non soldered USB Port on my notebook, unlike the 2 on the left)from EMPR Australia. Today I took the replacement part and my notebook to a computer repair business, who replaced the part.On the invoice the technician claims, that 'Replaced USB Board & tested OK'.(No prior testing and diagnosis was requested from me, as I called HP before and worked out that this particular USB Port was the problem/not working.) Anyway, after I picked up my notebook, I plugged in the USB transmittor for my Microsoft Sculpt Wireless Mouse, then after pulling that out, I tried one of my USB Flash Drives. Neither device was recognised as being connected to my single right USB port. I had a look on Device Manager and checked to see whether each USB related device/port has up to date drivers.Which they all appear to. And I have since sent an email to EMPR. Intuit Technologies (where I took it to, to have the USB Port replaced), well the receptionist told me they could do a diagnosis and testing for AU$68.75 and the notebook would have to stay there 4 days in their jobs queue to be looked at. What more could be done?May I as well buy a new notebook computer? (I already paid AU$68.75 to have the right USB Port replaced). As much as I want to save money.I bought my current notebook, new in early 2011. Also, which types of devices are not suitable to connect to a USB Hub?- Digital Camera, External Hard Drive, Flash USB Drive, Mono Laser Printer, Wireless Mouse, other?(Especially those that need more power, or data transfer - send/receive speed/rate) HP CPQ USB Port Board (Replacement part I ordered from EMPR)(P/N: 595205-001, S/N: N0000137415)

This not the place to discuss replacement of parts on your notebook done by other than HP. That is beyond the intended scope of this Peer to peer support forum. You should be discussing what was done with the compoany that performed the repairs. You cannot increase the data transfer bandwith beyond what the usb controller is capable of.  If your notebook has usb 2.0 ports that is what it will always have. Just about any usb device can be connected to a working usb port on the notebook. Some  devices, such as usb hubs, that draw higher current should be externally poweredto prevent damage to the ports and traces on the notebook's systemboard.

  • MIDI controller is working in the right usb port, but it doesn't in left

    Hello all,
I have this strange problem, yesterday i bought MIDI keyboards it's M-AUDIO Keystation Mini 32
The problem is that when i connect it to right USB port it works flawlessly, but when i connect it to my left USB port - my macbook pro recognizes the device but it doesn't send any midi data - to put it in other way: it is not working.
I have checked, everything is working fine In the LEFT usb port( wireless mouse, external HDD, Flash drives, Iphone) except my MIDI Keyboard.
Can anyone help? i've been searching for days for the solution, but, i'm out of ideas.

    Hey,
i have the exact same problem! I was in the apple store and they replaced my macbook. then it just worked fine for a few days and now the problems is there  again.
Do you already have a solution?

  • Satellite C50-B-14D - USB ports not working

I have a Satellite C50-B-14D and have had it from new for about 4 months.
I didn't realise at the time of purchase (online) that it has no optical drive so I have bought an external one.
Whilst attempting to plug it in I discovered that nothing happened in the 2 ports on the right hand side (2.0 and 3.0) so decided to try the left hand 2.0 port.
It does detect the device but then undetects it within 10 seconds, it continues to do this every few seconds making it impossible for me to access my work on CD!!!
I have contacted the people I purchased it from but they say it is a Toshiba issue?
Can anyone help fix it as I don't want to send it for repair as I can't be without it for more that 2 days.
    HHHEEEEELLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I have tried various items connected via the usb ports and nothing works.
If a device like my dvd/cd writer is specifically a usb device why would it not have enough power to work, even if it was plugged into the usb 3.0 port? It works perfectly well on my old laptop.
It was only bought in October so is still under warranty and guarantee but I really can't be without it so am reluctant to send it anywhere for repair.
I was hoping there might be a way of uninstalling and reinstalling the usb ports?

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
    Steps I've taken:
    Disk Persmission
    PRAM
    SMC
    Reapplied the 10.9.2 update
    Sent feedback to Apple

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

  • Right USB Port faster than left (MBP 15 2013) ?

    Hello guys,
I just installed Drive Genius 3. Im assuming bad sectors on my external hard drive. When I connect the drive on the left usb next to thunderbolt normal scanning says can take up to 8/9 hours.
Plugging it into the right USB port only says around 3,5 hrs.
Is there a difference in speed?
    One more question:
Dont all new drives have SMART? My latest WD Elements says it has no SMART Status. So I cant find out any bad sectors except by doing a scan with Drive Genius?

The thing is, when I use an adaptor with the keyboard, it works fine in Logic. But the USB port cant seem to power the keybaord like the left one can. Could the USB port on the left really be broken if it is working with Logic with the adaptor?

  • Macbook Pro right USB port disconnects

Hi - When using the dialup modem adapter in the right USB port it will disconnect after 3-4 minutes but works fine in the left port. Flash drives & scanner seem to work OK in the right.
Also, a friend has computerized embroidery sewing machine and the right port does not recognized it but the left does on her MAC.
Are Macs were bought a couple weeks apart.
Is there a setting for each USB port that maybe wrong or is this just a defect?

    Well, does that link...

still lock up your Mac? No way it should have any such effect.

  • Split x2 problem with USB ports not working

My computer is somewhat new and this problem has been happening since I first got it.  I couldn't find anything about this problem here or elsewhere online.
When I plug anything into either USB port (I've tried my phone and an external harddrive) the computer like sort of recognizes it on and off.  When I plug in my phone the computer beeps at random every several seconds and doesn't recognize it.  The external hard drive was sort of recognized but only on and off and I couldn't move things from it to my computer because it wouldn't stay connected long enough.  It's literally like every 2-3 seconds it recognizes the USB thing, changes it's mind and then recognizes it again, etc. forever.
I haven't had a chance to test the SD card slot or the HDMI port yet.
Sometimes the mouse freezes also, I'm not sure if this is the same problem (related to connection between the tablet and the keyboard parts) or if these are separate problems.  It seems to be happening less often and goes away if I wait for a moment.  Still annoying but the USB ports not functioning is a more urgent issue.
I need help, is there a way to fix this or is something faulty with my computer?

  • 2010 i5 MBP USB Ports Not The Same?  Griffin iMic Issue

I have a 2010 15" i5 MBP. I got one of the white iMics and it works fine on the port thats closest to the screen. However, when I plug it in to the port that's closer to the SD slot, it doesn't work. Under the audio settings screen, I see the iMic under Input, and the slider is to the right, but the VU meter doesn't register anything. However, when it's in the USB port by the power adapter, it works as it should.
I have read that certain model MBPs have USB ports that are not the same, and some people have problems with programs like Serato when it's plugged into the front port. Traktor and Serato have even mentioned that on the MBP there is one "good" port and one "bad" port.
Curious if anyone else noticed this. Again, it seems to only affect 2010 i5 MBPs.

    Hi WebBrowser2,
As I understand your query its not a single doubt you are having at all, actually it’s a bunch of multiple doubt you are carrying here in your mind allied to Mac Book Pro (USB Ports are not working).  There might be various reasons behind- not working of USB ports in Mac Book Pro, as you already had searched out various ways to fix all your issues. A few months ago, I faced the same issue as my USB port was suddenly stopped to respond, then I also tried to find various ways to get rid of this issue, and I found an informative blog link which has fixed this issue and make me tension free.
For more information visit at- http://www.olmtopsts.com/blogs/when-macbook-pro-usb-ports-not-working.html
And I am hoping- it will assist you in the same way as it assists me.
