Right way of using the Battery

I have read these two links:
http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
http://www.apple.com/batteries/
I understand that this machine is meant for portability but I use it as a desktop replacement.
I just notice that when I plug in the power adapter while using some intensive processes, even when the battery is fully charged, the battery health dropped by 2% after like 6 hours of usage.
So should I pull out the battery and let the machine hook on to the power solely?

If you remove the battery then it will drop to 50% CPU ... it's designed to draw power from BOTH the MagSafe supply and the battery under intensive conditions, that's quite normal.

    Is there any way to use the ipad battery to extend the talk time on my iphone?

    I don't understand what you are asking. Do you mean connecting the iPad to the iPhone with a double-ended dock connector cable to transfer the battery energy to the iPhone?
    If that's what you mean, I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

  • Satellite U200: What is the best way to use a battery?

    Sorry to ask a dumb question but this U200 is my first ever laptop. ok, I've already done what most PC mags tell you, ie fully charge the battery then run untill empty then repeat process two or three times, it's suppose to get all the cells within the battery working.
    Now what's the best thing to do, carry on like that or should I wait untill the battery is say half empty or so & then plug the charger in?
    I believe it's not good to run the laptop with a full battery & the charger plugged in all the time, so what do you guy's do when you want to use your laptop for say 6 hours or so?

    Hi
    >believe it's not good to run the laptop with a full battery & the charger plugged in all the time.
    Well, the new notebook and battery generation allows using the battery and the AC adaptor at the same time.
    There is not bad memory effect as with early batteries!
    So my notebook is connected to the main power and the battery is always plugged-in.
    This has no bad influence on the battery performance. But you should know that there is a battery charge limitation.
    After about 500times of completely charge and discharge procedures the battery will lose slowly the performance. This is nothing unusual!
    PS: Note: In the user manual you will find some useful tips and information how to handle the battery!

  • Is there a way of stopping the battery from charging?

    Dear Apple Community,
    Recently I installed iStat Menus and found that, over the course of this year, my Macbook's charging capacity has dropped 5%. I know this isn't a massive number, but battery performance has become a concern for me. I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, on the main. It's sitting on a mStand, connected to a large monitor on my desk. I use my Macbook to play games, surf the internet, do work and all that good stuff - basically, I use it for everything. I rarely use the Macbook without it being plugged in. I read on the Apple website that they do not recommend leaving the Macbook on charge permanently and that I should use it on battery at least one a month. As I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, I don't actually have a lot of opportunity to do this.
    My question to you, the community, is: is there a way of stopping the battery from charging, either with the use of an app or a physical device? Ideally, I would love to have my power plugged in BUT only used when the battery drops below 10%. Is this possible with an app?
    On the other hand, am I just worrying about nothing? Will my battery be damaged further if I leave the Macbook charging permanently?
    Thanks for your help!
    Jeremy Reid

    Ideally, I would love to have my power plugged in BUT only used when the battery drops below 10%. Is this possible with an app?
    The charging characteristics are handled in firmware.  There is no app that would be able to do this.  You actually would not want to do this anyway.  Regularly discharging your battery to 10% will greatly decrease the life of your battery.  While it is true that you should not use your system exclusively plugged in, allowing it to run on battery a few hours a week should be fine.  Letting the battery regularly run down to (or below) 10% will cause you to use up cycles more quickly than is necessary (thereby reducing the life of your battery).  It's really a only a matter of disconnecting your Magsafe connector once in a while.
    Leaving it plugged in does not result in it being charged "permanently".  It will charge until it is full and then charging will stop.  It will only begin recharging when it reaches about 95%.

    I have the download list for firefox but accidentally deleted the file on my computer. I need the file and was wondering if there was a way of using the download list to access the file somehow, I don't think the file os on the internet either as I haven't found it

    Hello!<br>
    Go to the downloads window, right-click, and click "copy download link" or "go to download page". You should then be able to re-download it only if it's still in the downloads window

  • What and how is the best way to keep the battery strong?

    Im new to owning a Macbook Pro and I was wondering how to make sure the battery stays strong?

    No: draining to near 0% is not advisable. It's best to charge recharging at 20%:

  • Is there a way to use the common J-K-L keystrokes to play forward and backward in iMovie '11?

    Is there a way to use the common J-K-L keystrokes to play forward and backward in iMovie '11? Most editing apps--like Final Cut Pro, QuickTime Pro, Avid, etc.--use this convention. I find not having it slows editing down considerably?  I don't see it listed in keyboard shortcuts; is there any way to add it?  Thanks!

  • Has anyone figured a way to use the Magic Trackpad with Windows 7 on a partitioned disc using Bootcamp?

    Has anyone figured a way to use the magic trackpad with Windows 7 on a partitioned disc using Bootcamp?

    Yes. After Windows/Bootcamp discovers  your bluetooth device (Magic Trackpad or Mouse, be sure to make it discoverable), right click, with your wired mouse, of course, on the icon and select Properties.
    Then check the mouse drivers box and your device should work. (I located this solution on another thread)
    It works for both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.
    Must admit, the solution was not intuitive within the Windows environment. But we all must remember. It IS Windows, after all.
    Another thing. Keep in mind that the gestures on these devices that work just dandy in OSX do not carry over into Windows.
    It's Windows.

  • What is the right way to connect the adapter to my macbook when charging?

    what is the right way to connect the adapter to my macbook when charging.
    is it connect the magsafe connector first before plugging the adapter to the outlet? or the way around? or both ways will do?
    what if i'm using a surge protection with a on/off button, can I just turn the surge protector extension on and off without disconnecting the magsafe connector and adapter plug from my laptop when i'm not using it?
    thank you very much

    If there is any arcing it may be because the adapter is dirty. It is best to plug in the wall wart then attach the magsafe to the MacBook. As GfulDedFan mentioned this reduces the chance of power surging the MacBook. I have done mine this way since he day I bought it and have never had an arc. I keep it clean to reduce the chance of this happening. The following will help in the care of your supply.

  • How can I use the battery and let it be perfectly healthy?

    Hello everybody!
    I love this forum because everyone is a great helpful person.. .. However, I'd like to ask you couple things about the MacBook battery...
    I know that now the battery has been improved, it leasts longer and it can support 1000 charging cycles.
    (Right now I'm performing the battery calibration)
    I'd like to know how can I use the battery and let it be perfectly healthy.
    For instance,
    1) If I connect the laptop to the MagSafe and let it charge, when should I remove the plug from the Mac and when should I put it in charge? I don't wanna continously waste cycles and let my battery die too soon (it's too young to die! :-D ) .. I use it mainly at home connected to the MagSafe: someone tell that even if you leave the MagSafe connected after the mac has been charged it stops charging (I can see this), and others say that is not a good thing to let the mac connected to the plug for a long time... with the old model I used to disconnect the battery from the mac so I didn't have these problems but with the new one it's a long procedure...
    2) I usually use to calibrate the battery once a month... Is it a good thing?
    Thanks!
    Andrea

  • What is the right way to change the active JInternalFrame for and MDI app?

    I am working on my own implementation of the window menu. The action that is triggered when a customer chooses a window to activate from the list in the menu is not behaving as I expected. The code I wrote (below) switches frames correctly but the caption bar never gets updated and if you restore a frame from an icon the frame is not correctly activated, there is even a restore button which if you push fixes things up and the frame then behaves normally     if (frameToActivate.isIcon ())  {
              //  Restore from icon
              desktopPane().getDesktopManager().deiconifyFrame (frameToActivate);
         desktopPane().getDesktopManager().activateFrame (frameToActivate);
         desktopPane().setSelectedFrame (frameToActivate);I did a search of the web and found a tip on JavaWorld (http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-05-2001/jw-0525-mdi.html) which led me to try doing this from a different angle - the JInternalFrame's point of view. This code works     try {
              if (frameToActivate.isIcon ())  {
                   //  Restore from icon
                   frameToActivate.setIcon (false);
              frameToActivate.moveToFront();
              frameToActivate.setSelected (true);
         } catch (PropertyVetoException error) {
              error.printStackTrace();
         }My question is why does the desktop based approach not work? If methods exist that appear to let you restore and switch between frames why are the ineffective? Am I missing something obvious that I should be doing?
    If using the JInternalFrame methods is the right way to go then I will It just seems like if the DesktopManager has methods that advertise that is supports managing the active frame then they should work. Before I ignore them I want to check with you to see if there is a right way to use them.
    Ian

    So, this is another batch of duke dollars I cannot assign - since I solved my own problem:-)
    I had an epiphany and tried setting break points to see what code was executed when you click on an inactive frame. From that I determined that DefaultDesktopManager.activateFrame, as implemented, does not activate the frame but acknowledges the activation of a frame and does a small amount of bookeeping work for the DesktopManager. So, the solution is the code I wrote to switch focus using the JInternalFrame's methods. Since I did not want to have to write those nine lines of code in the couple of places I want to programmatically switch the active frame I added a get/setActiveFrame method to my JDesktopPane derivative. In case others face this problem here is the code (warning I have not yet setup building the JavaDocs for this project so I cannot vouch for the validity of the JavaDoc, but the code does work):/**
    * Bring frameToActivate to the front (restoring from icon if neccessary) and make it the
    * selected frame.  This method does all the things required to switch the active frame for
    * an MDI application unlike: @link JDesktopPane.setSelectedFrame, which does not change the
    * focus; @link javax.swing.DefaultDesktopManager.activateFrame which does not correctly
    * handle iconified frames or switch the focus properly; and
    * @link javax.swing.JInternalFramesetSelected which also does not handle iconified frames.
    * @param frameToActivate the frame to bring to the front and become the active window
    * @throws IllegalArgumentException
    public void setActiveFrame (JInternalFrame frameToActivate) throws IllegalArgumentException  {
        if (frameToActivate == null)
            throw new IllegalArgumentException ("setActiveFrame a frame must be passed a non null valie.");
        try {
            if (frameToActivate.isIcon ())  {
                //  Restore from icon
                frameToActivate.setIcon (false);
            frameToActivate.moveToFront();
            frameToActivate.setSelected (true);
        } catch (PropertyVetoException error) {
    * This method returns the currently active frame.  This method returns the same frame
    * as <code>getSelectedFrame</code> and is provided for symetry for <code>setActiveFrame</code>.
    * @return the currently active frame
    * @see LDesktopPane.setActiveFrame
    * @see javax.swing.JDesktopPane.getSelectedFrame
    public JInternalFrame getActiveFrame ()  {
        return getSelectedFrame ();

  • Dual Monitors with MacBook Pro fails using the battery

    Hi guys
    I am sorry I am new with Apple and need a help from you guys. I have a MacBook Pro (retina) and connected two monitors to it, using Thunderbolt plugs.
    It works fine when I close the lid and one monitor gets the Apple OS and the other I run Windows (VMWare). The problem starts when I remove the power
    from it and run using the battery. Monitors got blank display and I have to plug the power back to the MAC, in order to get the OS back. I've tried any combination on the System Preferences/Display and Energy Saver. No go!
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!

    I had the same issue a few months ago when I tried connecting to external monitor, it is only possible to run external displays from a Macbook Pro while the power cable is attached, if you try and connect to external display without having the charger attached the external display will flash your desk top for a second and then your Macbook Pro will go to sleep.  Hence connect your charger every time you wish to connect to external display, its not a problem with your Macbook Pro, it's just the way of Apple. Hope that helps.
