Just got a Playbook64 and am happy so far despite a couple of 'issues'...Am betting that RIM won't 'NORTEL' themselves.
In any case a $299 playbook64 was just too appetizing!

Hello RIM,
Over the past year since owning a Blackberry, I have had on-going issues with syncing my music between my (2) bolds, so I know this is not specific to the hardware, I have also managed 400 BB's on a BES before so I have a fair idea of how to do things and troubleshoot issues.
1. My music many times has sounded severely distorted through my car speakers, with lots of bad crackle that hurts my ears
2. Transferring media between my device and my computer is actually really annoying and now I can't even find my playlists on Windows 7
3. This should be seemless, it should not be buggy and I can't believe, having done so much support with your hardware and software that this continues to be a real problem for me
I have a playbook, 2 blackberry bolds (I had to buy another 1 because Mobilicity does AWS only and Bell was just plain mean to me so I gave up on them).
I am ready to go on ebay and get rid of this stuff because whilst I mostly use it as a phone (the reason I went with BB), it is important that I am able to do other things with it, without having to go through a dozen articles and issues just to get things to work, these should have been ironed out in the bug reporting process.
So I have reinstalled both Itunes and BB Desktop Manager, both manually and via repair and tried even recopying over my playlists, this doesn't work.
I can't believe the lousy support and buggy software, come on RIM, there is no excuses in this market, PICK UP YOUR GAME and update the BDS or I am done and so will the many other people who won't even take their time to write anything about it on here but vote with their wallet.Well you know the playbook is actually pretty cool but didn't seem to be ready to go out on time and being a late entrant to the market I would have expected them to showcase the playbook better, especially like how Nintendo gets out there and gets everyone playing with it hands on, there are some things about the Playbook that actually make it unique but it has been poorly marketed.
Unfortunately getting BDS and everything to work properly should not be an issue, I have already spent thousands of dollars on hardware and my phone provider, what am I actually paying for here? So I will spell out some things that make the Blackberry Playbook special and what I would have been pushing had I been in charge of marketing. Firstly I would have had a few different campaigns going, one that targeted business corporate customers, regular business customers and the public that use them as their choice of smartphone and open to potentially buying one.
1. Flash works really great, come on blackberry, why couldn't you team up with Facebook on this one? Facebook looks better on a Playbook than any other tablet I have seen, in fact the web looks better in general.
2. Stereo speakers(dual), movies sound great, music sounds great and so do games, in this area, Playbook has the upper hand.
3. USB & HDMI out - Allows much easier portability of presentations and transferring of files and now I believe there is the Wifi Sync as well.
4. Blackberry Bridge - You know it's like RIM got backed into a corner on this one, but you know, I think this is the most secure way to operate a tablet, I love how when I turn off bluetooth on my bold, my personal and private information is removed and I can pass it to friends and family without my personal communications being looked into, with the other tablets, it's pretty hard to have different people on them, without probably creating different profiles, with the Playbook, you could share it between a team and it would seamlessly operate between them.
5. True Multitasking - You know, you can play music, whilst playing a game and you can switch between applications, this funtions pretty awesome. I put on some cool music and loaded up a game on the device and someone whom had an Apple device was sincerely impressed he could listen to music whilst reading or playing games etc. This could also enhance Business Presentations that require audio in the background whilst displaying and going through different information / files or charts.
6. QNX OS - I mean wow Blackberry, this Operating System is fantastic, I love it, this was an EXCELLENT choice and this I will give you 5 stars on, I can't wait to see what QNX can do on the Blackberry and I would not be surprised if the QNX OS became a major OS against the others, it definitely is polished and apps just install and are ready to go in no time.
RIM has been ahead of the game and because of it's great name with-in business circles they have almost sold themselves and whilst it's nice to see that RIM has sold over 250,000 units with-in the first week this could have been drastically improved by realizing when getting into a NEW market, they need to do the proper marketing and get the devices out there with subject matter experts to educate people whom are checking them out so they can share that information with their friends.
Google paid a very large price with their Nexus One because they where over-confident and thought they would sell based on their name alone, this could have been a learning curve RIM did not have to deal with. There are actually other nice things about the Playbook, the apps that are in their app store are pretty cool and when Android apps are available it will be cooler.
I like the size of the tablet I can comfortably reach accross the screen to hit all the keys on the digital keyboard making it any larger and I couldn't hold it in my hands with the same comfort; copping out to apple fan boys thinking they must have a 10.1" tablet is not necessary, this is the perfect size to sit in your hands, some people think they are small but if they actually watch a movie or play a game on it or look at websites by "Playing with it themselves" they will react differently and actually suggest if your going to do a 10.1" tablet, also keep the smaller sized one as well.
Suggestions :
- Working on building in more extensions for gaming such as Unity so that games like battlestar galactica online etc could be played online and directions could be replaced by using the gyroscope.
- Hire more people if you are having problems meeting deadlines, these companies, including Apple are taking risks to win the market, if your going to take a swing at your competitors, please make it a punch and not a jab, the biggest thing you still have on your side is the market you already had and the market share you have been losing and since we all upgrade our devices so often at this time, come out with something special and we will continue to support you. Okay now that I have that off my chest I feel better. DAMMIT ! -
RIM is telling me that my carrier has to release the 4.5 OS update, my carrier tells me they haven't got it yet.
Personally, I don't care who is responsible for it. I have 45 users who are unable to read HTML formatted email and I'm getting tired of it. My users are asking why we didn't go with iPhones instead. I used to answer "push email, integration with GroupWise", but that is starting to loose vs. unreadable HTML formatted messages.
RIM- Apparently your carriers care more about selling phone upgrades than supporting products they have already sold. If they aren't going to release one, how about doing it yourself?
We are starting to regret our BlackBerry purchase.Well, you do have the tools IF you want them. The places hosting some of the beta OSs are not some pirate sites or torrents. Get real. But they are Beta OS applications, for sure. Leaked from carrier personnel.
And RIM won't be providing it to you because again, you are Telus client, and if you have 50 devices and voice/data contracts with them and your sales guy won't give you the time of day--well, you make your choices there.
So going to someone (RIM) with whom you have no relationship or contract is going to get you what you want?
You're just barking up the wrong tree, when you know where the right tree is.
The Beta OS you might get form Telus in six days for six weeks or six months is the EXACT same OS that is out there now. There will be no difference other than the site you download it from, and that Telus doesn't support it for technical service for now.

Laptop not recovering sleep- Nor any choice for LID
For many years i have been forced to reset my laptop when completed with my session. There is no choice for sleep when lid close in power options and sleep mode works randomly if i go through my windows button. Here are examples of what happens:
If i leave the laptop for too long the laptop fan continues and the Network light turns amber/orange color. When that happens if i even tap the power button the laptop immediately shuts down( no need to hold it). If i put it in sleep mode, through the windows button, it goes for a while and the similar thing happens. There seems to be no rime or reason when the sleep mode works. There was a time when Internet Explorer was open it wouldn't work, so i stoped using it.
I believe the sleep issue has to do with a process continuing and not allowing the computer to sleep.
I use to have a lid option in my power menu, but for some reason that is gone(even in the advanced options). I have updated the bios, changed the drivers and laptop has done the same thing since we bought it.Hi @Dputzjr

I understand that you are not see any option for sleep under the power options.
When you leave the laptop for too long the laptop fan continues and the Network light turns amber/orange color. Once this happens if you tap a button the computer shuts down. If you use the Windows button to activate sleep mode it works for awhile but then the same thing will happen.
You believe there is a process that is not allowing it to enter sleep mode.
Here is link to Troubleshooting Sleep and Hibernate issues (Windows Vista) that may help.
Another thing you can try is this step.
Go to the command prompt and right click and run as administrator.
Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press enter.
This will reset the power schemes.
If you still think it is a process causing the issue. you can try using msconfig to determine the offending process.

If the issue should still remain you can do a restore back to when it was working.

If that does not work or is not an option, I suggest you do a recovery back to factory.

You will have an opportunity to backup your personal files to prevent loss during this process. If you do not yet have a backup now is the time.

My Blackberry allowed a choice when deleting an email on the Blackberry: I could delete the email on just the BB or I could delete the email on both the BB & my PC. Is that possible on the 4s? Thanks, Ray Pratt
Possible with a POP account, but not with an Exchange or IMAP account.
RIM provides a dedicated email delivery service for the BB that all email accounts accessed with a BB must go through. This provides additional optons and features not available with an email client that communicates direct with the incoming mail server as with the iPhone's Mail app. -
I wish to sell my 2008 MacBook Pro. Have erased hard disk and when I went to fresh instal Mavericks OSX 10.6 (it gives me no other choice in the disk utility program) It says in the Apple Store, it is unavailable. But because this is done from disk utility there is no operating system or access to choose another OS eg Yosemite. I cannot download anything using my iMac as that came ready loaded with Yosemite, so it does not show as a purchase. I do not want to use the Time Machine backup as that has all my details, apps etc. in it. Would the best way be to purchase a disk containing Mavericks the OS that was on it most recently. Can anyone offer advice please?
You need to re-install the OS the computer shipped with using the disks that were supplied with the computer. Contact Apple Support and have the serial number of your computer available. They will send you new disks for a small fee.

I'm trying to create a new movie. It tells me to name my movie, and the only event choice in the drop down menu is the last movie I made. IMovie Library is greyed out. I'm lost and I'm just starting. Not sure I like the new version. Any help out there?

You will be able to upgrade to CS6 at upgrade pricing. Not the 20% discount, but it is "discounted" from the full price of CS6.
I'm still using CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, for the little work I do in those programs, they're fine. But if I want to upgrade them to CS6 I have to pay the full amount of an upgrade, with no discount... or will I have to pay for CS6 in full for both of these programs?
You will have to pay the full price (not the "full amount of an upgrade," whatever that means).
If you elect to upgrade to CS5.5 prior to Dec. 31 of this year, however, then then you can pay the discounted upgrade price to upgrade to CS5.5 (well, CS5 since Photoshop CS5.5 doesn't exist), and then you can pay the CS6 upgrade price in March/April. At the moment I can upgrade CS2, photoshop and Illustrator for €240 each, to CS5. So wouldn't I just be able to do that now and then buy the CS6 upgrade at a much later date perhaps just before CS7 comes out?
Yes, you can do that.
If CS6 has the tools to basically go "File>Export>Epub" and I get a fully working epub file without having to trash about in code afterwards or make complex tagging in InDesign, then I'll be buying it.
It looks like EPUB is evolving pretty fast, so even if ID CS6 fully supports what you want out of EPUB on Day 1, I bet you'll need to be prepared to postprocess it on Day 2. Or at least long before Day 200. -

In your Keychain under 'login' delete the VeriSign certificates and then quit and restart all browsers/itunes/app store.

Question on optimum choice of index - whether to use CTXCAT or CONTEXT

I have a situation in which there are short texts that are to be searched for diacritical characters and for that I implemented CTXCAT type of index. The solution works fine except for left side wild card search - in that case I have suggested the developers to use the query template feature. -this is the background information for the question I have and following example demonstrates it:

Don't worry about the cust_lexer, it is for diacritical search and it is not relevant to this question so I am not copying the code for the preference I created etc.
Now I have a row of data in the table with first_name column as Supervisor. If I run the below sql, it gives output:

So I am getting this doubt. However I have good data here that shows that the query doesn't do full table scan - still is it a bad choice? Note that there are several issues with CONTENT type of indexes( as per my limited understanding) - because they are not transactional in nature and so we have to take extra steps/measures to have the indexes updated which seems like a major pain area to me.
My doubt is , did I do the right thing by using query template or should I use the CONTEXT type of index instead of CTXCAT type of index?

Alhough it is documented that the ctxcxat index and catsearch do not support a wildcard in front of the term, a workaround is to use two asterisks on the left side of the term, as demonstrated below. I provide this only for clarification and interesting trivia. I would still use a context index for various reasons.

If you are using stemming, you can still use both a wordlist and a lexer, but only set the stemmer attribute in the wordlist, not the index_stems attribute in the lexer. -

I'm searching for an app to help study for an exam.
Part of the studying strategy is to study by the previous exams questions. I have those (a lot of them) in text format.
The app would need to have:
- Support for multiple-choice questions;
- Easy, fast and automated way of importing the questions;
Would be nice to have:
- Ability to include a rich-text comment along with the right/wrong answer;
- Support for tagging each questions.

I connected my new iPhone 5 to my (now fully updated after two separate operating system upgrades!) MacBook Pro so that I could add my music to my new phone. Rather than configuring it as a new iPhone, I chose to configure it as my old iPhone, thinking that this would make it easier for my music to be there. WRONG. Now my new iPhone 5 looks exactly like my old iPhone 4 did in OCTOBER, 2012 - photos, messages, contacts... anything done since then is gone (that was the last time I had backed up my old phone, which unfortunately was not connected to the cloud and is also lost somewhere in a New England lake :-(). What I could really, really use help with is finding out if I can have a do-over on my choice and at least get my new phone looking/acting like the new phone it is, and bonus would be to have the photos and videos I took with it this past weekend (it's only five days old!) restored. Please help!
Look iTunes>Preferences>Devices...is a backup listed for your iPhone 5 dated BEFORE you restored your iPhone 4 backup to your iPhone 5? If not, your data is gone. If there is a backup, on your iPhone 5: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You should now be able to restore that backup, if it exists, to your iPhone 5.

Importing, copyping raw files as DNG files - copy to location choice, and more ???
First:
When I copy raw files as DNG files, the right hand pane shows where the copies will be placed. (I use Windows 7) I do not have much of a choice, and cannot set a default. The default choice is "My Pictures" on the C: drive. I have an Solid State Drive, SSD, and do NOT store my photos on that small, 256Gb drive. I store my images on an internal hard drive.
All i want to do is set the default "Copy To" location to where I store my images. I would like to copy them to the original folder, in a separate folder (for example, LR DNG). Instead, I have to open the SSD, find the files, and copy them to my preferred location. This is very irritating.
Second:
Worst, it appears that the Copy function puts the copied images into multiple folders. I had 11 images from raw files that were put into three separate folders. That seems quite silly to me. It causes me to do more work opening the folders and copying them to the root folder. That is very irritating. What is going on here?
can these two issues be resolved? Thanks, in advance.My apologies. I thought it would open the selected folder and reveal the images to be converted. That would be the most obvious thing to do, but it does not behave that way. I made a couple folders with test images, CR2 and RW2, and the converter converted them.
Again, the navigation was funky, inconvenient, but it works. i complain because we pay a lot of money to use Adobe products, they have huge resources, and they seem to release products that have obvious flaws, especially navigation. Maybe they just hate Microsoft. Sorry for the rant.

Choice format for null or empty string vs non-empty
How can I provide a choice format string for null or empty substitution strings?
I know one would not nomally do this, but the substitution strings are being passed in by an independant legacy code. I need something equivalent to

I have one more query. Whenever we add a new column to any table in Oracle, the column name is stored in Upper case. So when we generate XML File from the database, all the tags are either in upper case (or we can use qry.useLowerCaseTagNames() to retrieve the tag names in lower case). But the XSD contains tag names in mixed case. So when validating the XML Document against an XSD, it throws a validation error.
Is there any way I can avoid this?

How long does the clean up process take on a microphoto its taking a good few hours
