RIM: BlackBerry 10 Will Soon Be Ready for Licensing
Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) said it will soon be ready to license the company’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system to other manufacturers, even as it races to release its own devices with the software by early next year.

The new platform is in the final stages of testing, and RIM is now considering how other companies may be able to use it in a range of products, Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins said today. The BlackBerry 10 lineup was built on software called QNX, which is used in cars, nuclear plants and military drones.
“QNX is already licensed across the automotive sector --we could do that with BB10 if we chose to,” Heins, who has begun to carry a BB10 phone for his own use, said in an interview at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York. “The platform can be licensed.”
BB10, which has an improved Web browser and the ability to jump between applications while they continue running, is the linchpin of RIM’s efforts to regain market share from Apple Inc. and Google Inc. Licensing the new software to other manufacturers may help bolster investors’ confidence in the operating system. RIM’s stock jumped as much as 13 percent on Aug. 8 after Jefferies & Co speculated that Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) might license BB10.
After six straight days of gains, the Waterloo, Ontario- based company’s shares fell 2.7 percent to $8.07 at the close in New York. The stock has lost about 95 percent of its value from its mid-2008 high.
Sales Slump
Global BlackBerry sales tumbled 43 percent last quarter as RIM’s aging lineup of devices failed to match the consumer appeal of Android phones and Apple’s iPhone. BB10 will change RIM’s fortunes, Heins said today.
“We’re here to win,” he said. “We’re not here to fight for third or fourth place.”
The BlackBerry 10 represents a fresh start for RIM, which abandoned its old software to create the operating system. The new lineup uses technology from its 2010 acquisition of QNX Software Systems, which RIM bought from Harman International Industries Inc. (HAR) for $200 million. The underlying software has been used by companies ranging from Cisco Systems Inc. to General Electric Co. to Caterpillar Inc.
In Heins’s vision for RIM, the company will expand the scope of its devices beyond BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook tablets into other areas of mobile computing and what he calls machine-to-machine communications.

  • RIM plugs Blackberry phishing hole -- is there a patch I should download??

On 9/30, I received an urgent e-mail from ZDNet advising of a phishing hole and that RIM has shipped a fix for this "serious security vulnerability."  A link to the patch was given in the article.  However, this link brings me to the blackberry web site update page.  I can't find the patch anywhere on the site.  Does anyone know anything about this??  ZDNet is a reputable site for IT professionals (which I am not.)

  • RIM says I have an Invalid Pin?

    Hello,
First post here. I was trying to get some help from RIM support for an AppWorld app that won't activate even though I paid for and recieved a license. The dev stopped responding to my requests for help so I thought I'd go through AppWorld. I entered all my info and when I try to submit the form, it tells me to enter a valid PIN. Well the PIN is the one I got off my phone and also matches the PIN on the box the phone came in. Now I have no way to get a refund for an app that won't work. The phone works just fine so I can't imagine the PIN is really bad, but I don't know what to do. I'm really regretting buying a Blackberry as I've been through three defective Tours and now this! Thanks in advance.

    Hi!
    I bought a Blackberry curve 8320, Unlocked GSM AT&T mobile on Jan 18 2011 from ebay.com.
But, Im unable to use the Data services of my local carrier provider. I had to go through for a thorough recheck looking for a solution, finally I was told by my network provider that the Blackberry mobile is GSM unlocked but not AT&T unlocked and advised to contact eBay seller to get AT&T data services pin unlocked.
When I contacted ebay seller I was told the data services pin was invalid and it cant be registered with internet services and as a part of my mistake, since I was in a hurry, I didn't go through the product description properly at the time of my purchase where it was mentioned that BB services cannot be used.
I am able to make & receive phone calls, send and receive sms and use other facilities except Internet, messenger and other BB related services. In this regard, I would like to know if it is possible to create/unlock a new PIN to use my data services? My current service provider is Bharati Airtel from Karnataka State, India.
As I'm required to use my BB mobile data services as urgency. Hence, please let me know if there is a solution to this problem.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Hello,
There is no solution. Each BB PIN is unique in the world and is assigned, at the factory, to each individual BB. It cannot be changed. Further, as you now have learned, each BB PIN can exist only once in a BIS system anywhere in the world. As such, since the PIN is locked elsewhere, your carrier will never be able to create a BIS account for you.
I know you were hoping for a better answer, but that's the way it is. In all truth, the ebay seller you bought from was completely honest about the situation. You are therefore the victim of your own mistake.
    Good luck!

  • Vendors saying BlackBerry phones are discontinued

This might not be the right place to post this but I had a frustrating experience yesterday at a Wireless Wave location.
I was trying to get another SIM card and unlock my phone to switch providers and the rep kept trying to get me off BlackBerry.  He said that the Z10 and BlackBerry phones in general were discontinued.  They had one Z30 in stock he tried to sell me but Fido would not do a term on it again because as the rep said "they are discontinued".
I was not trying to switch phones I just wanted a new SIM and to unlock my phone.  I told him I liked my Z10.  I was curious about the Z30 but wasnt interested in another term (I switched from Bell because of billing issues and I still have time left on my term with them).   He was really trying to push me to Android.
I doubt that this is isolated to this particular rep or this particular store.  I was seeing a girl in San Diego and seeing as she mostly wanted to just text and email I suggested that she look at a BlackBerry to see if she liked it.  The Verizon rep said "getting a BlackBerry is a bad idea" and wouldnt even let her try the phone out.  He ended up selling her an Iphone5.
My point here is that I'm a BlackBerry fan.  If I wasnt I would have walked out of that store with a different phone and left the platform.
BlackBerry, you need to do more to get these on-the-ground vendors on your side.  The phones are fantastic.  Maybe take the stock writedown on those Z10s and send sales reps out to the individual stores to turn the vendors onto BlackBerry or something?  I've seen little to no advertising and if the places people go to buy phones are telling customers who are specifically asking for BB products not to buy them you wont turn this ship around.

Im quite well aware of whats going on with BlackBerry, I work in financial services and we follow the markets (BB stock up 33% this year!)
I'm also a proud Canadian and happy to have a Canadian product.  Blackberry phones work great here, I've had a guy with a Samsung Galaxy side by side on the same carrier who was in and out of service and I was getting full bars when camping.
Just that the frontline vendors persistently trying to talk me out of my BlackBerry when I'm obviously wanting to keep it I could only imagine someone who likes their blackberry but isnt a fan and doesnt have as much loyalty would be gone.
I know how these guys work, they work for spiffs when they sell a phone.  Maybe if BlackBerry offered a vendor spiff directly it would change their mind.  These guys make like 15-50 for each phone they sell even if it's on a term.

  • I've lost my yahoo email access on playbook and yahoo says it's BlackBerry's doing - please help

It's now day 2 of no playbook mail. I kept getting a yellow triangle saying yahoo account not available or couldn't access. The yahoo site says blackberry has done this and blackberry  is working to resolve - is this true ?? If so it seriously sucks, as my internet provider is Rogers, just like many people, and Rogers uses yahoo mail. Can someone p,ease confirm and help with thus? I would be extremely grateful if you could help, perhaps list steps if there is an answer? Thanks so much.

That article was last updated March 16th 2012.  I don't think we would have put up with this problem for that time would we???
All you can do is delete the account and add it back taking care with the account details.
If people with Rogers email accounts say their Playbook works fine then it ain't the Playbook OS, it's the way it interacts with Your playbook and Your Rogers account.  It's in the settings I would think, but everybody with email problems should delete and re-add as first line of attack.

Did you buy the device from AT&T? Do you have an account with them?
They should give you the unlock code for free, tell them you are traveling internationally and need it.
The local reps in the store likely can't help you. Call ATT direct.
There is no real VoIP for BlackBerrys yet, other than Google Voice.
and UMA calling which ATT does not offer.

Do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescribed for most glitches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
You might also try connecting to a WiFi network and completing the BBM setup.

  • Blackberry no help at all

I have a torch 9850 which I bought in Hong Kong while I was working there to replace my 9500 which was OK but not as good as the new one. In Australia my provider is Telstra and I just need someone to fix it.
Last week the phone showed a JVM error 545 which I looked up and seems to be not an unusual occurrence. However I am not terribly confident in technicalities and I contacted the RIM local number for help. The person emailed some software instructions etcetc and advised that I should go to my service provider for repairs if that did not resolve the issue. This I have done but Telstra say that as the phone (which they are quite happy to take my money to connect to their network) was not bought through them in Australia they will not service it; regardless of whether I was happy to pay or not.
So now I have RIM saying go to Telstra and Telstra saying go to RIM and meanwhile I have no Blackberry service. This is really not good enough: surely you contract Telstra (and other service providers) to service your hardware as RIM do not seem to have any local service agents other than the service providers.
As a global company whose products are used by customers who travel all over the world surely there should be a corresponding global service support. Not so it seems in Australia.
Please can you advise what I am to do: this is my 4th Blackberry and I am (or at was least up to now) a strong supporter of the B’Brand; and have been waiting eagerly for the promised new model: which I could be buying wherever I happen to be working at the time. But if I cannot get support when I am working in Australia through your contracted service providers, I may be better off with the latest Samsung (i-Phone never!) who I have coincidently been working with in Korea this year.
Because there does not seem to be any Blackberry service businesses in Australia other than the ones which won't deal with me I shall probably try and find a shop front service person, who I fear will probably stuff the phone up completely.
Talk about frustrated with these hours of wasted time: the very thing that my Blackberry is supposed to solve: I am now thouroughly cheesed off  !!
    Tim

Unfortunately, all warranty service on your device is through the carrier from which you purchased the device.  When you leave a carrier and move the device to another carrier the new carrier can't/won't warranty the device.  It leaves you in limbo for warranty service.
The only way to get service from RIM is to pay on a per-case basis.  1-800-BLK-BERRY
This particular forum is not an official support channel and is merely a peer-to-peer support community where users help other users.
On that note, why not just try reloading the OS?  It's not that difficult.  You will need BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on your computer.  You can get it from www.blackberry.com/desktop
Here is a step by step:
Remove the battery from the back of the BlackBerry Smartphone.
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer using a USB cable.
Once prompted to Retry, Update or Cancel, click Update. If available updates are found Desktop Manager will prompt you to Get Update, Update Later or View other versions
Click Get Update to install the recommended software version or View other Versions to manually select the version you wish to install and click Install.
In the Update Options screen there is the option to enter the email address to be notified in future when there may be new software versions available.
fill in the checkbox and enter the email address in the text field to receive email notifications
uncheck the checkbox and leave the text field blank to not receive updates.
Reinsert the Battery which was removed in step 1
    Click Install Update
Note: there may be a prompt to activate the device wirelessly after the upgrade.

  • Blackberry vista compatiblity issues?

hello all, i hope someone has the answer to my problem. i've had a bb 8130 since spring 08 and i got a compaq c60-215dx notebook feb 09. i recently purchased a bluetooth adaptor so i can listen to music thru the computer ( it works on i heart radio thru bb but not sprint radio...whole nuther issue). my problem is when i try to install the device drivers it repeatedly asks for my peripeheral device software (the bb i think) but i don't have anymore software to give it (recently installed bb desktop v5.0 and handset v 4.5) after the search fails i get a window that says blackberry bluetooth device is not compatible with this version of windows (vista), and a link to the RIM website which so far i haven't found anything to fix the problem.what do i do? thanks

My experience has been that the more end points you are trying to sync with an Exchange mailbox, the greater the likelihood of sync issues.  So my opinion is you would experience the same issue is you had say, an iPhone and an iPad, or two iPads.....

  • BlackBerry Curve 8330 with Sprint and OS 4.5?

I just got an email this afternoon from RIM saying, amongst other things, that the BlackBerry OS 4.5 was available for my phone. After following the link on my laptop, it gave a list of supported devices (including ALL BlackBerry Curve revisions) and, after clicking Update, it installed the software to my computer, only to say my device was not supported.
Why would it email me saying it's supported, and list my device as being supported, but not work?
Also, I've seen a bunch of "unofficial" or carrier-specific 4.5 versions (Vodafone, Australia, etc) but was kind've hoping for an official update from Sprint or RIM, as opposed to downloading a version that may or may not work on/brick my device.

I don't think it is officially released for ATT or Sprint - Others will let you know if I am incorrect.
I have verizon and uplated a few weeks ago and love it.

  • NO REMOTE BACKUP & RESTORE ON BLACKBERRY PROTECT ON BB10 OPERATING SYSTEM --- READ THIS POST

    Dear BlackBerry,
First of all I would like to establish that I am a very loyal customer of BlackBerry, so anything that I will say in this letter is because of the personal concerns shared by me and millions of loyal BlackBerry customers.
BlackBerry have launched the new BlackBerry Classic Q20 phone.
Apart from the reintroduction of the Navigation and Track pad that is above the physical keyboard and slightly bigger size.
What are the real differences between this new BlackBerry Classic Q20   and the BlackBerry Q10 ?
The main issues and concerns are that BlackBerry have reduced and in fact left out several features on the BlackBerry 10 operating system, for which was available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, such as on the BlackBerry Bold 9900.
Some features may not be vital or important, but other features were vital and important and by BlackBerry leaving out these vital features, it beckons the question as to why are BlackBerry limiting the software functions and capabilities of the BlackBerry 10 operating system as to what the BlackBerry 7 operating system has in place.
Do not misunderstand me in what I am saying, BlackBerry is still the best in what it does and I love the product. And the BlackBerry 10 operating system does have features and functions that the BlackBerry 7 operation system does not have.
But the whole point of improvement is that BlackBerry keep the best and vital functions that are available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system and actually include those features and functions in to the BlackBerry 10 operating system. That would make sense and move forward.
There are two vital features and functions that I will now mention that are available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but was left out of the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Firstly, there is a feature on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, called   "SELECT ALL"
This feature allowed the user to go in to their,  photos or pictures or videos or music or documents or phone contacts folders and if the user wished to share all of those items in that particular folder to another phone device with Bluetooth or a computer with Bluetooth, or to delete all of the items in one go within that folder, then the user would not need to manually click on each item within that folder, which is time consuming especially if there may be in excess of one hundred items in each folder or more than one hundred phone contacts within the contacts folder, where the user needs to now manually click on each item using the "Select More" feature that is the available feature on the BlackBerry 10 operating system and is very time consuming.
But within the BlackBerry 7 operating system there is the feature and function that is called   "SELECT ALL"
This feature allows the user to "select all" of the individual items within the folder of their choice or the phone contacts folder, with just one click and be able to either delete all of these items or to share transfer all of these items to another device or computer that has Bluetooth.
Can BlackBerry bring this feature to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as an update as soon as possible ?
The next feature and function that was on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but was deliberately not included in the BlackBerry 10 operating system is the >
Remote Back Up   and   Remote Restore     on the  BlackBerry Protect.
This cloud back up and restore feature was vital and in the history of BlackBerry with Blackberry's advanced encryption and security, this cloud back up and restore feature was always safe and the security and protection of data being backed up and restored to and from Blackberry's cloud has NEVER been compromised or hacked or accessed in any way what so ever by anyone. And this made Blackberry's reputation for security number one and gave the loyal BlackBerry customers even more confidence in the BlackBerry product.
Now I will go in to detail why it is vital that BlackBerry must include and introduce this feature that is available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system but it is not available on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Firstly, the current BlackBerry protect that is available on the BlackBerry 10, has some lovely fancy features, such as remote locating of the phone and remote wiping of the phone, should it ever be lost or stolen.
The fact is, this is a good feature, but if the phone was lost forever or indeed stolen, then that's it, the device data is also lost forever and the only data that would be accessible to restore on to a new BlackBerry 10 operating system device, would be what ever the last back up that was available that was made using BlackBerry Link on the computer.
Now, doing a phone back up on BlackBerry Link on the computer, is all very well and good, but there are many limitations to this.
    Firstly,
if the owner of a BlackBerry 10 operating system device was to be at home or in the office and connect their BlackBerry 10 device to their computer to BlackBerry Link and do a full device Back Up. Then that device is now only Backed Up at that point and is only Backed Up to date at that moment.
Now imagine after that Back Up was made, the computer in which BlackBerry Link is installed on and the Back Up was made, imagine the situation where that computer broke and all the saved data was lost or destroyed for ever or that computer that had the BlackBerry Link backed up data was stolen and never recovered ? Then everything that was backed up from the BlackBerry 10 operating system device to that particular computer using BlackBerry Link, would now be lost for ever. Which means that the Back Up that was made using BlackBerry Link is pointless in this above situation.
    Second Example,
This next example is even more realistic and is vital in my argument for the Remote Back Up and Remote Restore.
Imagine for example it is a day that you decide to do a full phone Back Up of your BlackBerry 10 operating system device on your computer using BlackBerry Link. Everything is now Backed Up only on that computer and is only up to date at that moment.
Then later that day, you need to travel to another town or city or state or country, for what ever reason and you may be away for a day or several days or weeks.
While you are away, the computer that you used to make the last full Back Up using BlackBerry Link, is at your home or in your office, hundreds or thousands of miles away from where you are with your BlackBerry 10 device.
While you are away, you input new contact details or new calendar schedule entries or new memo notes or new reminders or all of these above vital entries in to your phone.
You do this the next day when you leave and then throughout your business or personal vacation, you continue to input vital information in to your BlackBerry 10 operating system device, such as new contacts, new or amended calendar entries, new memos, new tasks. All the vital information that you need stored safely and secure.
Then your BlackBerry 10 operating system device is either lost or destroyed or stolen. But whichever, it is now gone for ever and all of the NEW vital information that you have in putted in to your BlackBerry 10 operating system device since the last full Back Up that was made using BlackBerry Link on the computer that is hundreds or thousands of miles away, has now been lost for ever.
What is the point in in putting any new data or information in to your BlackBerry 10 device if a situation as mentioned above was to happen ?
Where is the benefit of only the BlackBerry Link Back Up in this above situation ?
Now if the device was a BlackBerry 7 operating system device such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900, then if the above situation was to happen, if you was away from your home or office since the last full Back Up of your device was made on a computer.
If you were hundreds or thousands of miles away and whilst you was away on vacation you need entered new contact details or new memos or new reminders or new calendar entries or amendments in to your BlackBerry 7 device. Then you can immediately after in putting these new items of information and data in to your BlackBerry 7 device, you can do a Remote Back Up  to the BlackBerry Cloud   using any connected wireless network or your mobile phone network using your data that is on your sim card to do this Remote Back Up.
Then if after this Remote Back Up was done, if the BlackBerry 7 device was lost or stolen or destroyed, then you could simply go and purchase another BlackBerry 7 operating system device and input your primary email address that was used to register the previous BlackBerry 7 device, in to the new BlackBerry 7 device and then once set up, then open up BlackBerry Protect and click on Restore and select the last saved cloud Back Up and then all of the data that you last Backed Up over BlackBerry Protect Cloud is now installed on to your newly purchased BlackBerry 7 operating system device.
This was a vital feature for total security and peace of mind of all BlackBerry users.
All BlackBerry users do NOT want to download any third party application that makes claims to offering this service as any third party application is NOT reliable and NOT safe and NOT secure.
Only the Remote Back Up and Remote Restore on the BlackBerry cloud that is available on BlackBerry Protect on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, is the only proved secure cloud back up for BlackBerry and actually works precisely and is totally safe and secure.
So I now ask the question to BlackBerry,
Why is this vital  Remote Back Up and Remote Restore feature of BlackBerry Protect that is available on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, is not on the BlackBerry 10 operating system ?
Will BlackBerry please listen to its loyal customers and please introduce the two above mentioned features as an update to the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
These above two mentioned functions and features are vital and it's what millions of loyal BlackBerry customers want installed on their BlackBerry 10 devices.
Please can someone at BlackBerry please come back to me and tell me if these above two features will be introduced to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as an update or download ?  As its what we all want back.
    Thank You.

Ditto on both points. Meanwhile I use the solution of a third party backup.
