Ringtones and iTunes

My question is in regard to, how I get "ringtones" to show up in iTunes? I go under preferences and it's not there. I've tried looking but can't find a place where "ringtones" is at. Thanks so much for the help! I'm trying to get a m4r file to become a ringtone on my phone.

I have just bought an iPhone 3GS, I had an iTOuch previously and have a number on songs in my libary. I have successfully put my songs onto my iPhone but how do I get these as a ringtone or do I have to re-purchase them as ringtone?

Nevermind, I got it to work. I was trying it on a DRM protected file. Doing it with a non-DRM protected file worked fine and it showed up in the "Custom" section of the Ringtone page.
If the ringtone file you purchased does not show up as a ringtone and you see it as a music file instead, you should be able to use a utility to strip the DRM info and then convert it into a ringtone (plenty of tutorials for doing this around the intertubes).

Syncing Custom ringtone and Itunes Match.

So - tried all the above and ringtone shows up Grey in the pone tones folder but when I check the SYNC select tones box and try to sync I get an errro telling me my phone is set to sync with a different library...help please.

From a different post, I tried this. I set my phone to the sounds page (selected the ringtone at the top), and watched as it went through the sync. At one point in the sync it would bring the sound page back up and my custom ringtones would be there. Then, it would go back to sync, and they'd be gone. I've now been disconnecting the cord when I see the ringtones come up, and they've stayed every time, including keeping their link to their contacts.
This is frustrating, because I even lost my purchased ringtones. When they were the only ones I'd try to sync, it still wouldn't work without unplugging after the first sync screen went away on the iphone.
I tried a restore of my iphone and a repair of itunes. If I used makeiphoneringtoes, it would work, but I'd like my ringtones to show in itunes since I purchased from them.

I recently downloaded a bunch of songs an ringtones from Itunes on my phone. I synced up the phone to my computer to back up the files and to charge it and afterward all the new music and ringtones are gone?! Checked iTunes and they're not there either!

I went onto iTunes and tried to download the same things that I had previously and when I did it said I had already downloaded them? iTunes only gave me the option to purchase the music and ringtones again. Does this happen often or is there something wrong with the software on my iPhone?

Did you have the music in your iTunes library on your computer when you signed up for match? How did you transfer the music from you iPhone to your computer? Do you have a back up.

How do I get past this to be able to purchase. I can purchase songs on my MAC and sync but itunes doesn't give the option to purchase ringtones on the MAC, just the iphone.

If the email hasn't arrived after a few hours and isn't in a spam filter, you need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

No longer able to add ringtones to itunes 10.6 and up

I am no longer able to add ringtones into tones. I make the ringtones via itunes but it won't let me add it to the "tones" tab. The file is proper .m4r extension but when I try to add it, it gives me the circle with the line across the middle that doesn't let me add it to the tones tab. See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11, but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

Couple of things to check:
You are using Outlook 2003, 2007 or 2010
You have selected to sync Calendars and Contacts with Outlook on the Info tab of your iTunes sync settings
You have selected your Outlook calendar as the default claendar on your iPhone (in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar)
If all that is correct and iTunes still won't sync correctly, you might have to try reinstalling Outlook. Another option is to enable iCloud syncing with Outlook (see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/). This requires Outlook 2007 or 2010. If you decide to sync using iCloud but sure to disable contacts and calendar syncing in iTunes on the Info tab of your sync settings. Do not try to sync with both Outlook and iCloud or you will end up with duplicates in your contacts and calendar.
For syncing Ringtones confirm that:
The file is really a ringtone (right-click the file in iTunes, select Get Info, on the Summary tab it should say "Kind: Ringtone".
You have checked each of the ringtones you want to sync
You have checked "Sync only checked songs and videos" on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings
You have checked Sync Tones on the Tones tab of your iTunes sync settings

In iTunes, try signing out of your Apple ID & then back in: click on iTunes Store on the left sidebar of iTunes, click on your Apple ID on the top right, sign out, sign back in. Then try to sync your purchased music to your phone again.

HT1386 I purchased a ringtone on March 18, 2014 and have yet been successful at downloading it to my phone. I've tried numerous suggestions - synching via connection to PC, labeling tone 1 of 1 and iTunes...nothing has worked.

I purchased a ringtone from iTunes on 3/18/14. It never showed up on my iPhone, however it does show up on my pc and iPad. Ive tried numerous suggestions including a plugging my phone into the PC and syncing, relabeling the tones 1 of 1, trying to sync and transfer purchases multiple times...nothing is working. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tones
You can't purchase ringtones and alert tones from your computer, but you can purchase them using your iOS device with iOS 5 or later. You can purchase tones on iPad, iPhone (3GS or later), and iPod touch (4th generation or later).
To locate tones in iTunes on an iOS device:
Tap the iTunes Store app.
Tap Tones. If Tones isn't visible, tap More > Tones.
Browse for tones. Once you purchase a tone, a dialog appears.
Choose to set your new tone as your default ringtone or assign it to a contact. If you don't want to do anything with the tone, tap Done.
Tones you purchase using your iOS device sync to your iTunes library when you connect your device to your computer. You can find tones on your device in Settings > Sounds. In the Sounds and Vibration Patterns section, tap on Ringtone. Then scroll to the top of the list to see your custom ringtones.

Then I downloaded 2 custom ringtones, and attempted to sync them onto the 4GS, but it says "This Library is already synced with another phone, and if you try to sync, you will lose all of the information on the iPhone." I am a Windows user. This Sync process is VERY confusing.

How can I possibly get these two new ringtones onto the iPhone without wiping out everything else on the phone? This Sync process is nuts.
I have Backed Up the phone twice. Why would iTunes try to wipe out the phone?

Hi, I have gotten a new 16GB Iphone and it works perfectly with Itunes 8.02.20 except the ringtones I added in itunes, it doesnt sync (or even show up in my Iphone Ringtones tab). I have tried many M4R but it still doesnt work. Those m4r shownin my LIBRARY -> RINGTONES but it just wont sync with my iphone (I already Ticked on the Sync all ringtones under my iphone).
I did hardreset and restore also the same. Any expert pls help. Really appreciate. Many thanks.

It sounds like you bough the song only, not the song and the ringtone.
Ringtones via itunes are available in the U.S. only.
In the U.S. to make a ringtone you:
Buy the song with a bell - 99 cents
Find the song in your library and click the bell
This bring up the editor.
You edit the song to the portion you want.
Then click buy to purchase the ringtone - another 99 cents.
Then it shows up in ringtones and you can sync.
As I said, this method of creating ringtones is available in the U.S. only.
