Rip from cable box to Macbook (iVideo)

I have some recorded shows on my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD cable box that I want to rip to my Macbook using iVideo. The box is connected to my TV via an HDMI cable. It is an HD box, but they shows are not in HD.
What do I need to do this? An HDMI to DVI cable to hook from my cable box into my Macbook? If so, can you recommend a site and specific part number?
Thanks for any help,
Shannon

The MacBook doesn't have a video in, so an HDMI-DVI adapter won't help.
Most cable boxes (Motorola, anyway) have FireWire outputs. You can record video sent over FireWire using utilities included in the FireWire SDK from the [Apple developer connection|developer.apple.com].
You can find instructions [here|http://project-tigershark.com/people/rob/blog/2007/01/14/cable-tv-mac-fir ewire-hd-pvr].

  • Save TV Shows From Cable Box?

this is kinda random but I have a cable box from Verizon and on the back it has a usb port, I was wondering if I could connect it to my external hard drive and record tv shows. does anyone know if this is possible at all or if I daisy chain my my cable box, hard drive, and macbook, would I be able to control the cable box somehow with the macbook and then record to the hard drive?
even if theres some software I could download that would allow me to use just this equipment whether its for Mac or XP?
this would really great to be able to do

You said cable box, not DVR. So are you trying to record live television or transfer recordings from a DVR. If you want to transfer recordings...good luck, unless you have firewire on your box you will probably have a useless USB port. It might as well say service port. If you do connect to it there's always the slimmest chance it will show up as mass storage.
Now, if you want to timeshift television there are a ton of products to help you do that. Try: http://www.miglia.com/ and http://www.elgato.com/ . If you need to decode the cable (it's digital, but not Clear QAM) then you need to use the RCA or S-video outputs from your box to connect to any adapter/breakout box you choose. Controlling the box would then be done with a time. I don't know what you would do for an IR blaster to control it with your Mac, but there may be an available product and it's theoretically possible that you could do so with the built-in IR port.
    Good Luck,

  • Recording to Mac from Cable Box through fire wire port

I used AVCVideoCap to capture a .m2t video from the firewire port in my cable box. Using VLCs export wizard, I converted the audio to .mp4 and the video codec to h.264. Playing the converted file in VLC sounds and looks just as good as the original, however, after I imported and play the file in iTunes, I'm getting about a 75% decrease in decibels on the audio (video looks fine). And, of course, I get the same result playing the file using QuickTime. Any thoughts on what is causing this and on a solution?

    Thanks for your help.
The volume level on the AV control window is identical to the volume slider on QuickTime (which I have set at full).
I have this issue posted in another place and got a recommendation from Smokerz to try transcoding with MPEGStreamClip.
I was able to get better results using MPEGStreamClip to transcode the audio file to AIFF (1,546 kbs @ 48 khz). With the iTunes volume adjustment option set at 100% (which is 50% above flat) and with the volume slider set at full, iTunes plays the file at about the same decibels as does VLC, with volume set at full.
Thanks much again for your help.

  • Record TV from Cable Box via Firewire

So I have a cable box capable of outputting Tv via Firewire. I have the cable, and using iRecord I can record TV, but it is very cumbersome. I was wondering if anyone could give me a working link to Ical scripts that will launch a AVCVideoCap recording. the link is http://machdtvtimer.home.comcast.net/ but it does not work.

  • Record HDTV from cable box

I have an EyeTV 250 which I have used for years to record (using the EyeTV software) the analog signal my cable system (TWC) provided. The cable company recently switched to all-digital, but provided digital-to-analog converters to anyone who didn't have a set-top box. I ran the analog signal from the DTA into my EyeTV, and all worked as before. Now I want to record HDTV. The DTA has an HDMI output as well as the analog output. What do I need to complete the task? Elgato no longer sells this type of equipment in the US, and frankly, i'm not even sure what (if any?) equipment I need.

  • Cable box to HDTV connection question

I just purchased a 32" HDTV 720.  For the connection from the cable box to the TV, would there be a difference using the standard coax cable vs a HDMI cable?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Massive.  You need either a component video cable or HDMI - preferably HDMI.
Coax (RF) output from cable boxes and digital converters is still typically legacy NTSC analog, hence limited to 480i.

How do I use my MacBook Pro to watch exactly what my digital cable box would send to my TV?

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • How to change HDMI port settings from output to input to accept signals from cable/satellite box?

I have a new dv8t Entertainment PC with the HP Integrated HDTVHybrid Tuner.  The instruction manual provides 2 ways to connect the laptop to a cable/satellite box:  (1) coax/rf; or (2) HDMI.  The coax is a no-brainer; got it up and running in 10 minutes.  However, I am unable to get it to work connecting the HDMI cable, as the HDMI port on the laptop appears to be stuck in output mode.  How do I change the configuration of the HDMI port to "input" so that it can accept signals from my cable box?

Thank you Grant for the quick response. Well, it seems I don't know what I'm doing.
So, Mac Pro doesn't have any video INPUTS just Outputs. CHECK.
That is correct I have a six-input-port-selector with one input (SWITCH C2G). CHECK.
What I want is to be able to toggle through the inputs from the HDMI Switch C2G. That way I can use all my devices (Mac Pro, Xbox, PS3, Cable Box) with these monitors.
Since the Switch C2G only has one OUTPUT Slot, I'm thinking I just need to connect the monitors to the Switch C2G Output slot by using a 2 to 1 HDMI Adapter, but wouldn't I lose the true potential of these monitors by not connecting them directly to the Mac Pro?
Currently, I have the monitors hooked up with Thunderbolt/Mini Display Adapters to the Mac. So I guess I would just have to run just one HDMI with Thunderbolt/Mini Display from the Mac to the Switch C2G, and connect the other devices to the Switch as well.
    Jeez. Am I right?
What If I get an HDMI Switch with 2 Outputs instead of getting the 2 to 1 HDMI Adapter or perhaps a 4 to 2 Adapter. Heck. I'm not sure what to do here.
I would really appreciate anyones help.
    Thank you.
