Rip my Apple formatted iPod to a new Windows PC?

Long story short, my Mac is dead and my iTunes library along with it. I still have my library on my old iPod (4th generation, 20 GB).
Due to the high price of Mac's, I'm now using a Gateway laptop.
How can I rip the music from my iPod, to the Windows based Gateway?
Thanks for your help!

In my Ipod I have some old podcasts that I would like to retain.
My computers hard drive recently crashed and we discovered that the backup hard drive failed to back up any podcasts that I listen to.
Some of these podcasts in my Ipod can't be down loaded on Itunes now as more recent podcasts from the speakers is now vailable, in other words over 12 months old but still valuable information to me.
Please tell me there is some way that I can down load and save the older podcasts to enjoy along with the newer podcasts from speakers?
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

  • How do i transfer my music on my Windows formatted iPod to my new iMac?

HELP! Just bought a new iMac (yes, I finally converted!), but now I can't transfer/access my music from my Windows formatted iPod to my iMac.
i know that the iPod needs to be reformatted on the iMac but i'll lose all my music, won't I?

*i know that the iPod needs to be reformatted on the iMac but i'll lose all my music, won't I?*
Macs can read Windows formatting so you should be able to connect and use the iPod on your new Mac without any problem. One proviso is that up until now Apple has only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac (unless the range has been expanded to include the iPhone and the iPod Touch which I've no experience of). What this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC. If you were to try and update a Windows based iPod on a Mac it would be restored and reformatted to the Mac file system and have the Mac firmware installed.
*I can't transfer/access my music from my Windows formatted iPod to my iMac.*
Connect your iPod to your new Mac. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How do I download a Window's (PC) formatted IPOD to my new MAC??

I just got a mac and now I can't listen or download my music to my ITUNES because I originally formatted my ipod to my pc. Is there anything I can do?

I assume you mean you can not figure out how to transfer the stuff off the iPod into the Mac library? Because the Mac and Mac iTunes can certain mount, read, and sync a windows formatted iPod.
For stuff purchased from iTunes, you need to authorize the new computer with your account and then you can transfer the iTunes music store stuff directly off the iPod into iTunes. For everything else...

  • How do I transfer my photos and music from windows format iPod to my new iMac

I have just purchased a new imac and want to transfer my photo's and music from my windows formatted ipod to the imac, can you help? is there a download that can do this transfer?

Fortunately, you are going from Windows to Mac.  Macs can use the Windows disk format, so your iMac can read data off of your Windows-formatted iPod.  The reverse would not be true, because a Windows PC cannot read data off of a Mac-formatted iPod.
However, iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to sync song files from iPod to computer.  But there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the songs files are on your iMac's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.
NOTE:  Ideally, you should transfer your complete iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer.  If that is possible (you still have access to your old computer with its iTunes library intact), and want to try that (instead of using your iPod as the data source), you can post back.
Photos are different.  When iTunes syncs photos to the iPod, they are optimized for the iPod's small screen and stored in a single database file (to save storage space in iPod).  Therefore, the images are at lower resolution on the iPod, and there is no way to extract individual photos from the database using software on your iMac.  The only exception is IF you had a setting enabled in iTunes when you synced the photos to the iPod.  That setting is on the iPod's Photos screen in iTunes (where you set up syncing for photos) for Include full resolution photos when syncing.  If that option was checked, you can enable disk use for the iPod and look in the Photos folder using Finder to retrieve the photos.
NOTE:  There may be third-party software that can extract individual photos from the iPod's database file.  But they will still be the lower res versions of the original photos.

  • Can I transfer my music from a Windows formatted iPod to my new MacBook Pro?

I just ordered a 15 inch 2.3 ghz MacBook Pro and I can't wait to get it. The only thing I am wondering is if I will have any trouble transferring all of my music from my Windows formatted iPod (8gb 3rd generation iPod Nano) to the new MacBook Pro. Should I be able to follow all the steps in this article without any problems?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

In the iPod's user manual should be instructions on how to put the iPod into disk mode so that it will appear as an external hard drive. You can then copy your music to the Mac.

  • How can I add music to an Apple-formatted iPod from a Windows-PC?

without losing the music that I already downloaded from an iMac?
When I try connecting the iPod to my Windows PC, it prompts me to restore, which would eliminate all the music that's already on the iPod.
    Any way around that?

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). However there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. XPlay is an iPod specific program and can be used as an iTunes alternative, MacDrive is more general and lets you access various types of Mac formatted drives on Windows such as CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc:

  • How do I register my Ipod to my new Windows HP Pro?

I got rid of my Apple computer and now have a Windows XP Pro lap top. I do not have any music saved on my Itunes (all in my Ipod) and I don't know how to register my Ipod to my new computer without erasing everything. Please help!!

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
However, if your iPod is Mac formatted, you'll only be able to copy content off of it using a program such as XPlay as Windows PCs cannot read or write to Mac OS X formatted hard drives/storage disks.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

"if backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?"
Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. If you only have the songs on the iPod, and have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod

  • How do I sync ipod classic to new windows 8 computer?

I want to sync my ipod classic to a new laptop, operating on Windows 8. My existing itunes account is on my old, very slow desktop computer. On there, is my current music library.
    1) Please could someone tell me, how to sync my ipod to my new computer, in simple terms if at all possible!
    2) If I manage this, can I copy my itunes music library to my new computer?
    Thank you in anticipation!

You need to copy your entire iTunes folder to the new computer from the old one. Otherwise you could lose some of your content.

  • Whenever IPOD updates, a new window opens up

Hi, any help would be great.
Whenever my ipod is updating itself, a new Windows window opens up, very annoying. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Whenever my ipod is updating itself, a new Windows window opens up, very annoying. Any ideas?
is that a Windows Explorer window showing the contents of the ipod?
i've seen that happen before when the iPod Service on the PC was subtly damaged. if that's what is going on with you, try rebooting and repairing itunes.
reboot the PC (very important) and then do a repair install of iTunes. go to your Add/Remove programs, select itunes, click "Change" and then click "Repair".
after that, do you still get the Explorer window showing up when you plug in?

  • Mac-formatted ipod software updated under windows - all files vanished

    Hi.
I just accidentally upadted my iPod Software under windows, but I have a Mac-formatted iPod. Now I can't find any of my files anymore., even though the ipod is still filled with 27 GB of data. Is there any way to reverse this and get my files back or do I have to restore the ipod and thus erase everything? any suggestions would be appreciated...
    cheers,
    Colt

Hello all, I figured I'd join in.....sorry, no help here, I am also looking for an answer. I too have a 5G 60GB and it was formatted for Mac, I tried accessing it through xplay2 in Itunes and accidently updated it (Windows XP.) Now it just runs in a continuous loop of rebooting itself, most likely until the battery dies???....doesn't look good for the home team... any beta would be appreciated.

  • I've noticed my mac book air charger has turned yellow and the rubber keeping the wires hidden is ripping, will apple care cover for a new one?

i don't ever move my charger from behind my desk and i have no clue what to do, i don't know what is causing the yellowing. i went to the mac store in my town and they said they couldn't replace it because of he discoloration but the apple store might because the are more lenient but i don't want to be charged when it wasn't my fault at all. I’ve barely had it for a year i really can't afford to buy a new charger so i don't want to be charged if apple doesn't accept it.

Wires and their cover discoloring/fraying in one year?  Sounds like a dangerous product problem to me.
If it were mine I would be calling here:  https://www.apple.com/contact/
In there you will find phone numbers:
U.S. iPod, Mac and iPad technical support:
    (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273)
Tell them your problem with your computer as well as with the Apple service centers.....and  if they put you off ask to speak to supervisors.
I have had laptops for years, since they came out, and I have never had to replacea  a power plug except once when the plug-in bent out.  No way I could prove or show that was normal wear.  But I tried.
Be nice but firm with whomever you talk with.  I think you have good reason to expect a no cost replacement under Applecare.
