RIP or Repair?

Dear all,
i purchased blindly from ebay like new looking, but "not working" 24´´ iMac C2D, 2,33 CTO, late 2006 and i need to decide wheather to repair or not. I´m money limited DIY guy not beeing affraid :-)
After arrival of the iMac i realised it had smashed LCD - the screen is looking ok, but it has two huge areas and whole-display cracks probably under the plastic front.
The chime is going on, the disc is turning (hade to place used SATA there was none)
So after opening i realised quite clean vents, all four diagnosti LEDs green and on.
My concern is:
a) it´s not able to power-on / send signal to my older 24´CRT external monitor via miniDVI - VGA adaptor - GPU?
b) in target mode - there can be seen on 20% area of the display which is not completely KO the FireWire logo - but shaded grey and on distorted background - GPU?
c) after cloning 10.5. from my powerbook G4 (for testing reasons) - the machine didnot booted into system - which i only assume, while trying to test volume + - buttons on keyboard, but not hearing anything, probably iMac wasn´t booted at all? - Logic board / GPU?
so my question is - should i buy "new" 24 LCD screen to see whats going on or most probably there´s more like GPU / main board etc...
I´m loving to get such issues solved and perhaps re-use machine, otherwise thrown out, i´d love to save enviroment and "recycle" this nice machine.

Of course the first question is how was the system presented on ebay? If all the defects were not listed, if it was sold as working, you should contact the seller and ebay.
Given all the symptoms you're describing I can't see putting any money into it, even if you got it running a 2006 system is going to be limited.
If you could find another 2006 being sold for parts and at a real good price it might be worth it if you enjoy doing this sort of thing.

• How do I give a letter a value and use that letter as a code througout a spredsheet?

Hi I am trying to write a spread sheet to calculate the cost of repairing stock items. I cant figure out how to make the code = the cost, so that if somone types Hx3+Tx2+rx1 it would = £8
Which would mean: 3 x Hooks need replacing 2 x Tabs need replacing and 1 5cm rip needs repairing.
SO I have made one table with the codes and the values and one table for the items and their various panels that may need repairing but I cant figure out how to make it work...?
Can any of you help...?

HI Mich,
Here's an idea of the complexity of the issue, using the example in line 41:
Issue 1: determining what is code, what is quantity, and how many items are in each cell.
In the first cell, the formula has to determine, from the text string "Rx1 rx3" that:
There are two items. Possible to do this by counting the spaces and adding 1, or, assuming ALL parts in the cell will contain a x sign, by counting the "x" characters..
The first letter is code. But the code could also be the first two letters, or the first two letters plus a number (eg. WP5) or the first two letters plus the next two characters (eg. WP11). Other code lengths may also be possible. The length of the (first) could be determined using SEARCH to find the first x. Subtract 1 from that to determine the number of characters in the code, then use LEFT to extract the code from the formula.
=LEFT(B2,SEARCH("x",B2,)-1)
Now that the code has been extracted, that formula becomes the first argument of the VLOOKUP formula from the previous post, used to find the price of that item:
VLOOKUP(LEFT(B2,SEARCH("x",B2,)-1),Price List :: B:C,2,FALSE)
Next, the price must be multiplied by the number following the x. That number must be extracted. Assumption: The number is a single digit, between 1 and 9, inclusive. We can use MID:
MID(B2,SEARCH("x",B2,)+1,1)
=VLOOKUP(LEFT(B2,SEARCH("x",B2,)-1),Price List :: B:C,2,FALSE)*MID(B2,SEARCH("x",B2,)+1,1)
The result above gives the cost for repairing the large rip in B2
Next, if there is more than one type of repair to be done, the process above must be repeated with a new twist: This time we're looking for the second repair item in B2. The marker is a space, so we'll need to add a SEARCH for the first space, and use that as the starting point for both SEARCH functions in this section.
Then the whole process (with another SEARCH added to each set) must be repeated for the third (possible) code and number in the cell.
Repeat 7 for as many items as could be included in this cell.
We don't know how many items will be recorded in each cell, so we have to allow for a maximum and provide some means of making the formula quit when there's nothing more to be done. This could be an IF, depending on the count of "x" or " " in the cell, or an IFERROR that would trap the error caused by searching beyond the last space. Whatever we used would need to be added to each iteration of the last formula shown above.
As you can see, this quickly becomes a bit unwieldy, and a reason for my earlier suggestion to set up pairs of columns for each repair item.
Regards,
Barry

• Can't rip CD, can't repair permissions, help!

I moved my itunes music library to an external firewire hard drive because my main hard drive was getting too full. Now, I cannot rip music from a CD to the hard drive because I don't have the right "permissions". Nor can I rip to my main hard drive and copy to the external. I tried to repair permissions with disk utility, but it doesn't give me that option for the external drive.
I'm not sure how to work around this problem, can somebody help?

OK, yes this probably would be a good topic to post in the forum relevant to your computer hardware. I have 3 internal hard drives at the moment, and am getting ready to add a 4th, so this is pretty familiar territory. If you have the manual that came with the computer (you can download it from Apple's site if you don't) you should find the right information on drive locations and jumper settings, etc. As long as you get that stuff right, you should easily be able to boot from the current (soon-to-be "old") drive or from your OS X install disc and use Disk Utility to restore the current boot volume to the new drive (or partition/volume on that drive). At that point you can set your Startup Disk preferences so that the computer boots by default from the OS X volume on the new hard drive.
With three high-capacity drives in your computer, you'll have lots of options. I personally don't keep any media files at all on my boot drive, just to keep things on that volume as simple as possible. The other two drives contain copies of my various media libraries, and this works very well for my purposes.

• Took my phone to a 3rd party repair service for low battery issues. He says my board is bad. Offered to buy my phone for parts. Am I being ripped off?

My phone worked only while it was on a charger. I took it in to have the battery replaced. Afterward, my phone wouldn't work at all. He says my board is bad and offers me my $60 back that I paid for battery replacement and he keeps my phone for replacement parts. I think I'm getting scammed. What do you think?

Thanks for all of the replies. I wanted to post an update as a courtesy. This store has had my phone for 5 days. Yesterday, after testing, he said my board is defective. He wanted to put it in a diferent case, but he didn't have time, so I gave him another day. Went in the next day, still not done, but offered me my $60 back, but he was going to keep my phone for extra parts. I said no, I wanted to keep it. So I went in the next day to pick it up. Again, it wasn't ready. I told him I'll come back later to pick it up, he said OK. I went in again today, it still wasn't ready. I said I want my phone NOW, so he conceded and looked at my phone, said "hmmm...it appears to be working. Maybe it was the port." I just took my phone and got the **** out of there. I've been using it for the past 3 hours and it hasn't shut down on me and the battery is still full. All I gotta say is, don't go to anyone but the original maker. Lesson learned. Thanks for bearing with me.

• I got my phone repaired by apple a few weeks ago and got a new glass display put in and the entire screen is falling out of the housing and the home button is not working I'm more than disappointed with this service

I paid for this service to fix my glass on my phone and now the entire LCD display is not working and after my repair the home button stopped working and I went back and they told me it was like that before the repair which it wasn't and they are telling me I need to pay 300 plus for a replacement phone that's refurbished now I don't understand apples support is suppose to be the best in the business and I have been more then ripped of the service I got damaged my phone more than it was before I would like to know where I can go to talk to someone who will help me not tell me it's my fault this is outrageous!!!

Take the issue up with whomever replaced the device, whether that is Apple or another company.
There is nothing that we, your fellow users, in these user to user support forums can do for you.

• Tried to rip a CD with adhesive label - am I doomed?

I've successfully ripped a few hundred CDs on my Mini. Then yesterday, it came to a complete stop while ripping one. When I ejected it, I realized the artwork on top was on a thin sticky label, not printed directly on the CD. A sinking feeling began.
Since then, if I try to rip a CD it accelerates up to "that jet engine noise" (you know what I mean) and starts to rip... then stalls after a few seconds, stalls, stalls, spins down, spins back up and makes a little progress... The track is eventually ripped, but it's at the equivalent of 2x, and the machine tends to freeze while the rip is stalling, so that's no good.
I tried a CD lens cleaner (that friends of mine had used in slot drives without trouble) and it worked great for the next two discs I ripped, then went back to its former failure mode.
The Mini is out of warranty. Have I gunked the drive irrevocably? How expensive a fix would this be? Can iTunes rip from an external CD drive at the same speed as the internal drive (10-20x)?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like your sticky-labeled CD has left enough gunk behind that it has damaged the drive. The fact a lens cleaner helps the situation briefly, but the drive then reverts to it's poor state, suggests that further use of the lens cleaner is inadvisable (they can do more harm than good) so either the drive needs to be opened up and cleaned (a job for an approved service provider if you are not feeling very competent at computer repair yourself) or the internal drive ignored, and an external added.
The later option would be my choice in this situation, I think, particularly since good external drives are not expensive and perform rather better and more reliably than the internal slot load models Apple uses.
Have a look at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for some reasonable options for an external drive which will work with your mini and provide good speed performance.
If you want to replace the internal, that is also possible (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/ for examples) though you would have to add a service cost for the work to be done if you don't feel up to doing it yourself.

• I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store.

I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was. I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.

I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.
when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.

• "Disk Utility can't repair"...

Help!
My Macbook Pro 15" late-2011 has frozen and displayed the Kernel Panic screen atleast 5 times.
In Disk Utility, I've verified the disk and the boot partition and they were all "ok".
The final Kernel Panic required that I boot from the Recovery Disk (Apple-R) and go to Disk Utility.
Another Disk verification and repair led to a dialogue to "...reformat the disk".
So I reformatted the HDD and restored a Time Machine backup. After a few hours of working the exact same issue occurs and I'm back to the reformat the disk dialogue again!!!!
I'm planning to take this to Apple service center but was hoping that someone in the forum might understand the log file below and determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.

• Mavericks install failed, says disk is damaged and can't be repaired. Help.

My install failed early in the setup process, and said that my HD is damaged and can't be repaired. It reboots in install mode, I go to disk utility, and can't run repair. I've tried to boot to safe mode, but the progress bar goes about a third of the way and it just powers off, so no way to get in to backup or do anything on this machine. My time machine backup is old, but mostly I just have music that I can redownload from iTunes or re-rip from cd, so not worried about data loss. So do I reformat? How would I get an OS on there again, since there would be no way to boot up or get an OS Download onto that machine? This is the first time I miss the old cd/dvd disk distribution. I'm stumped, any help and guidance is appreciated. It's a MacBook Pro if that matters.

Have you got back to restore from if all else fails?
Try booting from the grey restore disk that came with the Mac: disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. Hopefully it'll boot, albeit slowly. At the first screen select your language and from the menu bar of the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD>Repair Disk. Hopefully DU wil repair the errors. Click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try to restart as normal from the Apple menu.

• Where can I send a complain to apple support? I am being ripped off by a tech support location in Mexico.

I purchased a Mac Book Air computer 2 months ago in a BEST BUY store in Guadalajara, Mexico.
I was working on my computer when it went off and the battery indicator stoped being on the top bar.
I took the computer to the store, and the people from the geek squad took a look at it, and told me that the problem was the battery, but that I should not worry because just 2 months had passed since I purchased the machine, so I should have the warranty from Apple, and I had also purchased the extended warranty from Best Buy, so I was covered.
The took my computer and gave me a receipt.
2 weeks or so after this I get a phone call from the repair shop to where they sent my machine. This are their infromation:
Making Touch Services, S.A. de C.V., Servicepro ( Suc. Guadalajara)
Niños Heroes 2828 Planta Alta · Jardines del Bosque · Guadalajara, Jalisco · C.P. 44520 Tels. (33) 1204 5114 y 1201 7906 · www.mtsmx.com · [email protected]
And they tell me that the computer had been "inmersed in liquid" and therefor my battery, "the flex" and some board had to be replaced, and since the computer had been "inmersed in liquid" (those were the exact words used) the warranty was void, as well as my extended warranty, so if I wanted my brand new computer working again, I have to pay them $4,216 mexican pesos.
The whole situation is ridiculous because the computer is new, I paid for an extra warranty to protect my equipment, and of course I did not "inmersed" my computer in any liquid. However the use of those words is very important to the case, because that "improper use of the equipment" allows them to claim a void warranty and charge me for a reppair of a new equipment!
I asked them for proof of what they were claiming, and they sent a picture of a "flex" on top of a table that had "watery salt stains caused by summersion"
When I Asked the to take a picture of my computer and send it to me, of coursed they did and of course there is no other component that shows any of the damage that appears in the flex.
I am outraged at the whole situation, and I am sure that this would have never happened in the USA. I have been working with apple computers for over 10 years, I currently own 6 apple computers, and this is the first time I am beeing ripped off like this.
How can I get a hold with someone at apple to review my case?

• CTplay2 has performed an illegal operation when trying to rip a track from a cd into Playcent

I have had Creative Playcenter for about three years with no problems until a week ago.
I was surfing the Internet and while on one webpage, I had the Playcenter
playing a playlist, the computer locked up after I tried to close a pop up ad. After rebooting, the Playcenter lost the list of tracks, it had the albums and artist lists, yet the track list showed "0". I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and reloaded
the tracks from the Nomad and now I am unable to rip tracks from cd's. I am able to convert existing wave files ripped from other cd ripping software yet cannot use the Creative Playcenter rip and convert feature without encountering this illegal operation message then it shuts it down. It's able to create the file where the mp3's are stored, but unable to tranfer the MP3 to it. No other changes have been made to my computer either. I just hope that I do not have to do a dreaded format and reinstall to fix this.
I really like this Creative product since I have had it have not had any problems with either the Nomad Jukebox or the software until the Internet surfing incident about a week ago
Creative Nomad Jukebox 2LX 20GB

This error occurs when I try to rip a cd track into the Play Center. I have tried to repair from the disc with the anti virus disabled and while reinstalling another error message appears "scandir has caused an illegal operation" during the reinstall.

The original version that came with the installation disc "3.02.58". I have not updated it since I installed the first time because I had not had any problems with it until recently.
Also I forgot to mention in my first post, I have added some extra system sounds to my computer and that may have contributed to the problem of it freezing up at the time I clicked on the pop up ad in order to close it out. Some of the sounds activate during "restore up" and "minimize", the sounds or other Windows sounds do not activate while Playcenter is in use.

• Iphone glitchy after repair. Need help Please.

So I cracked my screen at the gym over two months ago. WEIGHT fell on it, yeah pretty %^## dumb.
Saw it was 269.00 for repair, I was afraid.
My friend said he would do the repair for 120 with a year warranty, still to expensive.
I started watching DIY videos, and thought it was pretty easy.
I bought a screen from china, 55 $ and extra spare parts for 22 $ , all in US$.
Got it two weeks later, I ripped the proximity sensor cable, replaced the screen without speaker, proximity, camera. Phone and screen worked. Except it was glitching all the time.
My keyboard would press on the wrong letters most of the time, my ability to zoom was screwed up.
So I returned it, another 14US down, waiting for a refund.
Bought another one of Ebay, from US seller, for 50$, and placed an order for proximity and camera cable for 5 $USD.
Got it, fixed it, worked well, STILL gltichy, but less than before. This time the phone worked amazingly for two days, then it got back to its habits.
Already down MORE THAN 150USD$.
Now my question is, why is this happening, all digitizer and screens are the same, carriers do not matter, (they say the screen will only work on sprint, at&t, etc) I live in canada.
My broken was perfect no problems with the phone, except it was hard to see and type because of the million cracks.
I have already resetted the phone, but still same thing.
HELP, What should I do ?

iDevices are not user servicable.
Opening of the device by anyone other than Apple (or an Apple Authorized Service Center) voids the warranty and all rights to support from the carrier and these user to user support forums.
Take the device to someone that is knowledgable and have them repair the device properly or replace it.
Apple does not sale parts for any iDevice.

• ITunes won't recognize MP3s ripped from CD

Before iTunes was available for Windows, I was using MusicMatch to rip MP3s from Audio CDs....iTunes won't recognize those files...they are not protected...i have consolidated my library and even physically moved the files into the iTunes Music folder...I have deleted my .iml file and reloaded both iTunes and my 'library'...same result...other programs such as Media Player recognize and play these specific files, so I am at a total loss..Windows Explorer tells me that these files will open with iTunes, but when I select 'Open With..', iTunes will start but the song never plays and isn't added to my library...I spent hours and hours and hours ripping these CDs...is there a setting or preference that I am missing? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The headers on the problem tracks may be nonstandard or corrupted (this can happen with some MP3 conversion or import utilities). If you search the web for "mp3 repair" you'll find a number of repair tools. Here's one I've seen mentioned:
VBRfix.
I haven't tried any of the versions of this, so I can't attest to how well (or indeed if) they work.
Hope this helps.

• Itunes 7.6.1.9 - ripping cds using too much cpu!

When ripping new cds, itunes starts hogging the cpu like no tomorrow. it will get to 99% at times! I have a 1GB ram, and have NEVER had this problem with any other application or version of iTunes for that matter. I consistantly run multiple programs at the same time, such as Photoshop CS, Firefox and itunes all at the same time with not even 30% of the cpu being used. This is ridiculous.
In addition to basically fearing my machine will crash if i want to put a new cd on my computer, now songs hang up / skip randomly (including itunes purchases!) and this also NEVER happened before the upgrade.
What is the deal?

Hey folks, there is a DEFINITE bug in version 7.6.029 which is causing a variety of problems, including massively slow time to rip CDs, and frequent hangs of iTunes. I just upgraded from 7.5 to 7.6.029 after ripping about 200 CDs relatively quickly using iTunes.... IMMEDIATELY after iTunes "auto upgraded" itself to 7.6.029, I started seeing massively slower times....rips that took 4 minutes previously now take over 20 minutes. I tried a variety of other suggested fixes (deleting video files, deleting podcasts, upgrading quicktime, etc).... not a bit of it helped.
Here is what DID fix the problem:
1. I copied my already ripped music files to another disk for safety,
2. then I deleted version 7.6.029 from my PC via add/delete programs.
3.deleted quicktime via add/delete programs
4.killed ituneshelper via task manager
5. rebooted my pc,
6. installed version 7.5.0.20 by using file I found at:http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes7/Win/061-3 902.20071105.G6edS/iTunes75Setup.exe
7. manually delete "iTunes Library.itl" in the ..My Documents/My Music/iTunes directory
8. I then got the 'old' iTunes to come up by selecting "repair" on the iTunes restart
9. I then did "file->add folder to library" on iTunes menu (pointing at the saved music files from step 1.) to re-import all my music. Of course, I logged onto iTunes beforehand with my AppleID so that iTunes would re-retrieve all the album art. I did NOT manually delete any files at any time in the except the iTunes Library.itl file in the ....->My Documents->My Music->iTunes folder.
That has completely fixed my problem. Disks are now back to being ripped in the 3 to 5 minute range...CPU usage is still as high as it was in 7.6, but iTunes no longer locks up, and the program is now properly managing my multispeed CD disk drive...operating it at 10x speed to rip discs (as opposed to 1.2 to 2x speeds under iTunes version 7.6)
So, sorry Apple, I won't be upgrading iTunes until I read that you have really fixed this problem...comments everywhere point out this performance bug, and I don't see any coherent response from you guys...just misplaced blame on disc drives, cpus, etc.....but the code is BAD... Hey, you didn't just outsource the iTunes coding effort did you? Sure looks like it.
