Ripped DVD, Converted to QT, Cant preview in FCE

I have bits and peices of a DVD that I ripped using Mactheripper, then converted by Handbrake, then converted to Quicktime.
I can view the clips in Quicktime.
I can import the QT Clips into FCE and see them in the browser. I can put those clips into the timeline. What I cant do is see any sort of preview by hitting the play button in the canvas.
Can someone figure out what I am doing wrong?

You're using Handbrake. That's for converting to iPod and such. It's not for production. Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your DVD.

  • Whats the best settings to rip DVD to Mpeg Streamclip for use in FCE??

    Hi there.
Ok, I using MPEG Streamclip to rip a DVD for editing on FCE.
Whats the best settings to get it to my hard drive?
    MPEG4?? Compression rate??
    Chris

Assuming your DVD plays widescreen, the better settings in MPEG Streamclip would be:
    Export to QuickTime
    Compression = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 1920x1080
Pretty much everything else should remain at default settings.
Keep in mind that if you have an NTSC DVD, the resulting QT/AIC video will be 60i.
In FCE, select the AVCHD 1920x1080i60 easy setup, create a new sequence, import the converted file and edit away. The quality should be very nice.

  • Ripping dvds to handbrake and editing in FCE

I am trying to rip DVDs using Handbrake and edit them in FCE. I am not sure which settings to use in Handbrake to ensure the ability to open the file in FCE. I ripped an hour long DVD to an AVI file which took 9 1/2 hrs., but when I tried to open the file it was empty. I also tried MacTheRipper, but FCE won't work with MPEG 4 files.
I'm not sure what Codecs are in Handbrake, but there are 4 options and I'm not sure which is the correct one to select (MPEG-4 video/ MP3 Audio, MPEG-4 Video/AC-3 Audio, AVC/H.264 Video/MP3 Audio, or AVC/H.264 Video/AC-3 Audio).
How can I make this work? I'm unfamiliar with most of the different setting options as a whole in Handbrake.
    Please advise.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

DVxDVD will convert your MPEG2 files(DVD) to DV files that work in FCE. It is not a free program, but it is fairly cheap (around 40 bucks Cdn I think)
Another way to go is hook a DVD player up to your Cam via analog cables and hook the Cam to the puter via Firewire and capture that
When ripping, even with a solid program like DVxDVD, there will be some quality loss, especially if you are going back to DVD at the end
MPEG Streamclip is a free program that can do what you want but you need the Apple MPEG-2 Playback component which you can purchase (around 30 bucks Cdn) on this website

  • The Best DVD ripping/burning/converting software

I have herd alot about this Mac the Ripper deal but am having real trouble laying my hands on it. Is there perhaps other software that may allow me to Rip/Burn/Convert at my leisure, or will I have to resort to boot camp and Alcohol 120%? Thanks y'all

I certainly hope you're ripping your own DVD's, and not those belonging to, say, your friend, NetFlix, or your local video store.
Anyway, I very highly recommend using HandBrake to convert the DVD video into something more suitable. Just pop in the disc and play with the settings. It comes pre-loaded with presets for creating video for the iPod, tv, and PlayStation 3. (An XBox 360 preset is in the works.)
I personally recommend AVC/H.264 video (set to constant quality: 64%) with AAC 5.1 sound (set to 384 Kbps). It's a slow encoding process, but you'll be impressed with the output -- more so if your Mac is hooked up to an HDTV and home theater system.
If your legally-purchased DVD has encryption that HandBrake can't handle, then download MacTheRipper, and use that to extract a clean VIDEO_TS folder; then point HandBrake to the VIDEO_TS folder.

  • Ripping Dvd's

I am trying to use my new ipod and i was wondering does Super DVD to Ipod Converter, rip dvds to your computer and then convert them so itunes can use it? Please answer this somebody who know this!!!
      Windows XP

I tries Super DVD-iPod Converter, but with the DVDs I tried (Lion King and Fight Club) it didn't work. As far as I know, these DVDs needed to be Decrypted first. When I tried so, I didn't have sound with Super DVD-iPod Converter.
Cucusoft's converter immediately worked: it ripped the DVD and converted it all at once.
For me it's the best alternative!
Let me suggest you download trials of both programs (just Google both converters and add "free download". You'll find plenty of sites!). When you do so, REMEMBER those are Trial Versions. This implies that texts like "Trial Version" spoil your picture! You have to buy it to remove the texts. However, the trials are good for testing though! (Unless you want to convert complete DVDS in Trial, try to not fully convert the film, but Abort after a couple of minutes. At least Cucusoft's converter provides the opportunity to watch that couple of converted minute!)
    Good luck!

  • Ripping DVD's ready for iPod - Help Needed!!

    Hi All
I have been using Handbrake to rip my DVD's and for some reason it has stopped working now..
It goes through the process of encoding the files, all the settings are correct and I have noted the saved directory (even changed it a couple of times), and when it completes 100% there is no file to be found anywhere......
I have posted a note on the handbrake forum but got no reply yet.
Does anybody know what the problem may be?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
    Many thanks
    Garry

How long do you wait? Once conversion has completed, the YourFileName.temp file must be rewritten to your desitination location. This can take some seconds, depending on the size of your movie. While we're at it, is the temporary file even being created when conversion begins?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
Ripping/extraction of DVDs can be done by a number of Mac compatible appliations. MacTheRipper (free) is probably one the most popular at the moment. Stripping and/or conversion, however, still requires an ancillary application like MPEG2 Works 4 Advanced ($$) or MPEG StreamClip (free). However, since your were less than specific as to type (stream file, elementary streams, VCD compatible, SVCD compatible, DVD compatible, etc.) of target file desired, I can only generalize. Conversion basically depends on the workflow you utilize. Both applications have some "intrinsic" capabilities but, for the most part, rely on QT, QT Tools, and/or QT components you have installed and available. In addition, both application allow output to what is basically the QT Pro "Movie to QuickTime" export option. This simply means that in addition to the specific formats you mentioned, you also have full access to all of the same target QT formats you could normally access directly from your QT Pro application. (I.e., you can go directly from a VOB file or file segment to any available QT compatible compression format based on QT Pro and installed QT Pro components.)
REMINDER: These alternative compression formats are not iPod compatible.
ADDED: Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus ($$) will convert ripped/extracted DVD directly to iPod compatible formats.

  • Ripping dvd's to itunes

Is there any way I can rip dvds to itunes, so that I can put them on my ipod? Please help me.

    Not directly, no.
You need to look for third-party applications that can convert DVD audio or video into a format that iTunes can handle.

  • Ripping DVD's to iPhone 4.......

I am fairly new to ripping DVD's and was suggested to use Handbrake software.  I figured out Handbrake currently is not compatible with iPhone 4 (looks like some mods need to be done to some folder files to do this).  I recently tried Daniusoft and it's one you have to pay for, but I tried the free trial and it has a stupid watermark on the whole video.  Also the converted file was 1.7Gb.  To me that seems huge for a converted file for my iPhone.  I am hoping to find free software and know that I might forfeit qualty for this.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Can't really help you with software but I will say that the file size for the movie doesn't sound huge. I just checked the sizes of the digital download movies I have that were "free" with the purchase of Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs and they are in that range. One specific movie (Sherlock Holmes) is 1.79 GB and 128 mins long.

  • Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
    Kind Regards,
    Julias

  • How to rip DVD  to MP3

How to rip DVD to MP3
Are you looking for a program that can help you extract audios from a concert DVD or a movie DVD, and then save them as MP3? If so, Pavtube DVD Ripper would be a nice choice, since it is able to remove protections from all sorts of DVDs, as well as convert and extract DVD files to many other video and audio formats, including MP4, 3GP, AVI, MPG, MPEG-4, FLV, MOV, 3G2, VOB, MP3, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A, etc., so that you can do whatever you like with the output files. Now I’ll take how to rip DVD to MP3 for instance, and aim to show you how easy it is to achieve this goal via the help of Pavtube DVD Ripper.
    Step 1: Add DVD files
You can load DVD files into this program through “DVD Rom”, “DVD Folder” and “IFO/ISO”.
Step 2: Select MP3 as output format and set destination folder
Click the drop-down list of “Format”, and then check “Common Audio”, after that choose “MP3” as the output format. Meanwhile, if you do not want to use the save path set by default to store the output MP3 files, you can click the folder icon at the end of “Output” to specify your own destination folder. Additionally, if you want to combine all the audios into a single file, you can tick “Merge into one file”.
    Step 3: Adjust audio parameters
Click “Settings” button, then you will enter the interface shown as below, on which it is capable of adjusting audio parameters like codec name, sample rate, bit rate and audio channels. Generally speaking, the default parameters can basically ensure the good output audio quality, but if you want to get a better quality, you can change the figures to be larger. Meanwhile, you should notice that the larger input values, the larger output file size.
    Step 4: Start ripping
As soon as the above mentioned steps are finished, you can click “Convert” button to start ripping DVD files to the format of MP3. Once do it, the following window will show you clearly about the ripping info, such as ripping progress, ripping time, generated file size, etc., even you can choose “Shut down computer after conversion” to do other things while conversion is underway.
After finished, you can find the output MP3 files extracted from your DVD files through clicking on “Open” button.

I am not personally aware of any freeware that does what you ask. However, DVDxDV Pro (check it on VersionTracker) does what you want. The shareware price is $80, and is considered fairly high end. It does rip out audio separately from video. There is a less expensive version of this app available also, $25, but it does not separate the audio.
    good luck

Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.   Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature.
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. I'm not sure how it handles 5.1 audio, though, if it will at all.
    Regards.
