Ripping a dvd to use in FCE

I have made a movie in FCE then burned it to DVD (using iDVD) now I need to burn more copies of this DVD. Does anyone know a way that I can do this? I have tried using Mpeg Stream to convert it to Quicktime, so that I could bring it back into FCE then re export it from there, but Mpeg keeps giving me a message saying something about "read error". Does anyone know how I can make more copies?
thanks
ruez

Hmm...At what point in the process did you get the error message?
FWIW, here's my step-by-step procedure:
Mount the DVD on the desktop. (Quit DVD Player application if it launches.)
Launch Disk Utility.
Select the DVD in the left column of the Disk Utility window, then click the New Image icon in the Disk Utility menu bar.
Select a location to save the resulting dmg file.
When Disk Utility has created the dmg file, it should appear in the bottom section of the left hand column of the app window.
To create a new DVD, select that dmg file and click the Burn button in the Disk Utility menu bar.

  • Archiving to DVD then using in FCE

I have about 40 2-hour 8mm video tapes, some 20 years old. I would like to save them in digital form but do not have a DV camera and do not want to invest into it plus at least 80 DV tapes. I can save them on DVD using a DVD recorder that produces a regular DVD (at least so I think since those DVDs have VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS directories and .VOB video files). From there, how can I import the footage into FCE to edit it? Or is there a better way of saving those memories in such a way I can edit them again later?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul.
It depends how much editing you intend to do. If it is just topping and tailing and cutting out the bad bits, you could simply hook up your camera to the DVD recorder and do basic editing like that.
A couple of days ago I bought a DAC100 Analogue-Digital Converter for £160. It has received good reviews and has been around for a while.
With it I can copy analogue tapes, DVDs and TV programmes into DV format in my computer - all in real time and immediately ready for use in iMovie or FCE.
    The quality seems OK.
See this link for details and a review:-
    http://sol4.net/multimedia/dac100.shtml
This place in the US is selling them for $180 - which seems a lot cheaper than in the UK.

If you do a Google search for DAC100 you will get more info and details of stockists and prices.

PS. I have got about 25 Video8 tapes. Unfortunately, my Video8 camera is not working so I will have to beg, borrow or steal one!

  • Whats the best settings to rip DVD to Mpeg Streamclip for use in FCE??

    Hi there.
Ok, I using MPEG Streamclip to rip a DVD for editing on FCE.
Whats the best settings to get it to my hard drive?
    MPEG4?? Compression rate??
    Chris

Assuming your DVD plays widescreen, the better settings in MPEG Streamclip would be:
    Export to QuickTime
    Compression = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 1920x1080
Pretty much everything else should remain at default settings.
Keep in mind that if you have an NTSC DVD, the resulting QT/AIC video will be 60i.
In FCE, select the AVCHD 1920x1080i60 easy setup, create a new sequence, import the converted file and edit away. The quality should be very nice.

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • DVD encoding using transcode results in out-of-sync audio

I am trying to encode my DVDs for easy viewing on my computer. I am trying to do this with transcode, but I am having a few problems.
Firstly, I use lsdvd and tccat to find and rip the desired content in raw form from the DVD to a VOB file. Once I have this raw data, I then encode the file to an AVI, using a command like:
    transcode -i <name>.vob -N 0x2000 -w 1000 --nice 10 -F mpeg4 -y ffmpeg,raw -o <name>.avi"
Which compresses the video to mpeg4 with ffmpeg and copies the audio from the original as-is into the AVI file. However, when I watch the resulting movie, the audio runs slightly ahead of the video, so people's lips continue to move after they've finished speaking, just like in a badly-dubbed kung-fu flick!
Another problem I've noticed (perhaps related?) is that despite the fact that the audio stream ought to be a bit-for-bit copy of the original, the bitrate is written as 128kb/s instead of 192kb/s like it should be. If the argument -b 192 is given then it fixes this problem, but the first problem is still present so it's not the cause of that.
Encoding in mencoder using exactly the same technique works fine, but I hate mencoder and mplayer because they are both brain-dead and buggy. Mencoder won't detect half of the stuff it should, e.g. the aspect ratio, forcing me to look at every DVD I encode, read the aspect ratio and set it manually, which is just not on. I need to use transcode anyway to rip the DVD image, since mencoder claims that it can't acutally read the DVD half the time when everything else can, so if I can just get past this stupid problem then I will be happy.
So, if anyone can help me figure out the problem here I'd be very grateful

Argh! I never even noticed that option, despite having read the man page about 7 million times. Acidrip is not so great IMO, I think it uses MEncoder, so it suffers from the same problems I highlighted earlier, plus it is very crude and buggy. IIRC it also seems to be biased towards single-pass encoding, which is stupid because for a little more time you can get better quality with multi-pass as long as you're happy with running an encoding process in the background for a few hours (not such a big deal as long as you nice it down to a low priority)

  • Ripping a DVD that was recorded in VR format

I've made dozens of DVDs on a Phillips set-top DVD recorder, using DVD+R media. Now, I want to rip them (using Handbrake) so I can watch them on my Apple TV through iTunes. Problem is, Mac won't read the disk. Simply says "You've inserted a blank disk". Ignore or OK are my only choices. I believe the Phillips recorder used VR format. Yes, I finalized the discs when I made them. I also tried making a copy of the original DVD; that didn't help. The disks will play on my Pioneer set-top recorder, and one of my 2 Windows PCs. Problem with ripping them on the PC is that it takes about 3 times longer than on the Mac, and the resulting filesize is about twice as big. Obviously, I want to do this on my Mac! Mac has a Matshita DVD-R UJ-868 drive (factory installed). I would be SO grateful if anybody could help me. I've searched all over the web for help on this, to no avail.

I just pulled out one of my old discs burned on the Philips 985 and made a quick test run on my older PPC Mac G5. If the discs are not being recognized as containing content and they are in fact finalized as you state, then you may have a combination of problems -- a weak burn/LP mode coupled with a possibly dirty lens. If cleaning the Mac optical drive lens does not help to read the discs directly on the Mac and your PC is able to read the discs anyway, my suggestion would be to simply copy the VIDEO_TS folder to an external hard drive attached to your PC. Then connect the external drive to your Mac, open HandBrake, and process your content normally. Since, as you pointed out, the Philips unit does not encrypt the data, the folder should copy without problem assuming the data is not itself corrupt.

  • Ripping Burned DVD to iMovie

How do I rip a DVD from iDVD & iMovie to be reedited???
    iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   LaCiE 186.3 GB HD

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Cameras to use with FCE

I'm interested in upgrading from Imovie seeing as I know it like the back of my hand and feel limited by it at this point. I'm looking to get a new camera in the spring of this year, and I'm wondering what kind to get if I want a good one for a good price that would be great with FCE 4.
Does everybody use Mini Dv cameras with this software? I don't see these in stores, and it this point to me it seems like they are old, clunky, and outdated. I'm no expert, but that's just the impression I get from them, so why are those the primary cameras used with FCE?
So if anybody can answer these questions, and provide me a list of a few good cameras (Mini Dv or not) that would work with the program and not cost a fortune, I would be much obliged!

FCE can work with DV, HDV and AVCHD camcorders.
Most consumer/prosumer camcorders on the market today are AVCHD camcorders or a variation of AVCHD. Be aware - if the camcorder doesn't have the *AVCHD logo* or doesn't *specifically state in the specs* that it's AVCHD, then it's probably not AVCHD. Even if it says it's H.264 or MPEG4/AVC that does not automatically make it AVCHD - a lot of people have been burned not watching out for this.
DV is, as you said, on the way out. 4:3 aspect ratio & standard def; however, decent DV camcorders can do anamorphic 16:9 and it turns out quite nice. So, you can do widescreen with many DV camcorders. HDV is still around and has a loyal following. There are some very nice HDV camcorders - Canon HV20/30/40 for example - and they're not too expensive.
Another thing to keep in mind is that even though you shoot high def with HDV or AVCHD, when it comes time to burn a DVD of your video it will be standard def - because DVDs are by definition standard def. To burn hi-def optical disks, you have to get a BluRay burner, BluRay authoring software (DVD Studio Pro, Toast) and of course BD media. It's not cheap.

  • PE11 Rip from DVD- putting a menu on- burning that to DVD ruins quality

First, I've read some things here and there, but can't find the exact same scenarios in other posts, although I'm sure this is a fairly common problem (SIAP):
Here is a summary of the issue:
    1) Our guy produced a video for our organization and gave me a DVD-R of the 11 minute project. I imported this into PE11 and on the timeline it says .VOB. Now on the desktop, the 481 mb VTS_01_1 file properties state that it is 720x480, 29 fps... although I find it strange that the clip as imported into PE11 in properties in the project assets window says it's 23.976 frame rate. Making things more confusing (don't even know if any of this matters) is that in an instance of Share->Export to Computer, the "source" says the video is 1920x1080, 29.97 fps. Don't know if any of this matters...
    2) Anyways, the reason I ripped it is for the sole purpose of creating a menu on the DVD. So I picked a "HD" template, imported my own JPEG on to it, then attempted as best I could to erase all the buttons except for "Play Movie." AGain, not sure if the Menu functionality has anything to do with the issue, but I figured I'd mention it.
    3) I've tried several times burning the video with both DVD-R and +R using both NTSC Dolby and Widescreen Dolby to burn to DVD.
The resulting DVD has a degraded, fuzzy image and the black frame lines at bottom and top seem to bounce and jitter.
The image on the original DVD is clearly HD and looks great, without any bouncing, jittering, etc. Also, the DVD app i used to watch the original on my computer is the same as I used to watch my own burned DVD... So PE11 has clearly degraded the image, something is going on in the export.
Another thing worth mentioning is that as I look at the video footage in PE11 on full screen, I can see that even in PE11, the video quality is not the same as the original DVD and there are obvious artifacts and just nonsense in the picture... Not necessarily as bad as the burn, but similar.
I've done a little reading on these forums about .VOB files... I don't fully understand them. Is it that the image is messed up from the beginning with an import from DVD? IS there a way to do what I want (take hiqual video from a DVD, put a menu on it, then burn it back onto DVD?) with PE11? Or is the only way to make a burn from the original source file before it was burned the first place?

Please get a MediaInfo readout of your VOB at the onset to determine what you have, especially standard or widescreen.
    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
Special Interest: Frame size, Frame rate, Display 4:3 or 16:9, Scan Type and Scan Order for which I am expecting Interlaced and Lower Field First.
Here is my take on your situation.
    1. The Canon 6D can capture 1080p video (1920 x 1080 16:9 at 29.97 or 30 frames per second), but from what you wrote somewhere along the line someone put that through a video "authoring" program to convert it into DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc (720 x 480). At this point, we need to know standard or widescreen. Both standard and widescreen will be 720 x 480, but the widescreen will have a 16:9 flag included to stretch the video for display after encoding.
    Question:
    a. What is on that DVD disc....just a file name VTS_01_1 (file size 481 MB) or two folders named OpenDVD and VIDEO_TS? If you have a file, for Premiere Elements 11, you would use Add Media/Files and Folders to get the file in Project Assets. If you have the DVD disc in the DVD burner tray, you would use Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive to rip the VOB and get the VOB into the project.
b.Your project is going to get messed up and confusing, if you let the program set the project preset for you. You will most likely end up with the default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is inappropriate for your project. So, before thinking or acting on Get Media....open a new project, go to File Menu/New/Project and set the project preset in the New Project dialog for NTSC DV Standard or NTSC DV Widescreen depending on what you find beforehand about the properties of your VOB MediaInfo Then use Add Media/and the appropriate choice based on what I wrote above about VOB already ripped vs DVD-VIDEO ripping.
    c. When you have your VOB on the TImeline with the appropriate project setting, right click the file in Project Assets and verify Premiere Elements 11's interpretation of the file frame rate and other to determine if it agrees with the MediaInfo readout. It would be very unusual if there was a differnce, but...
    d. Whether you have a NTSC or PAL project, all the SD DVD Templates have a frame size of 720 x 576 (PAL sizing). The ones tagged HD have a 1440 x 1080 frame size. Right now I would advise you to stay with the SD ones, but not be afraid to experience with a HD choice if it appealing and see what happening during encoding.
    e. In all this, you did not say what the duration is of this 481 MB VOB file. The standard DVD disc is spec'd at 4.7 GB/120 min. That 4.7 GB in reality is 4.3 GB. You will frequently see the recommendation "for best results, do not exceed 90 minutes on this standard type disc". When you have your DVD disc in the DVD burner tray and are in the burn dialog of Publish+Share/Disc/DVD make sure to check the Quality Area of the burn dialog for the Space Required and Bitrate reading (8.00 Mbps is the max reading).
Based on what you wrote, I suspect that most of your problems were related to incorrect project settings. By the way, if you want to get rid of a menu button text, most of the time double click the text to bring up the Change Text dialog, highlight the text there, hit the delete key of the computer, then hit the space bar or enter key.
If you are replacing the menu's audio, max 30 sec with looping. If you use motion buttons in the menu, max 4.9 seconds. After you get the details of the project setup OK, we can focus in more on the menus...number of Timeline markers etc, and customization of the menus from within the program.
Lots of details. The answers and successes will be in the details. All the contributors here have given you a lot of ideas for exploration and experimentation.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
Looking forward to learning of your progress.
    Thanks.

  • Do mini DVD camcorders work for FCE?

I'm sure this question has been asked here before but I can't find anything on it.
Am I correct in assuming that the camcorders that burn directly to a mini DVD instead of using the mini DV tapes are unsuitable for use with FCE? I would imagine that the quality of the footage would not be as high as mini DV tape, if indeed they are downloadable to the MAC at all.
    Thanks

That's correct. I don't know anything on the Mac that will read the files off the disc directly from the camera.

  • Ripping from DVDs

I'm trying to put together a reel and have been supplied with a bunch of my footage on DVD. I use Handbrake to rip to avi and figure it's best to convert to DV in Compressor before operating in FCP.
I'm encountering a problem that Compressor only sees the first few seconds of the avi files so I end up getting just a few seconds of bars. Is this an issue with my capture settings in Handbrake?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a workflow for ripping from DVD? Should I be ripping to avi? Is Handbrake even the way to go? Should I try something else?

  • Bad pixelation when ripping a DVD

    Hi,
I have a series of four DVDs I bought for my wife at Christmas. I have been using acidrip to rip them to my Hard drive as a series of AVIs and then I convert the AVIs to MP4s to put them on her Ipod. Each DVD has around 9 episodes of a TV show. All the episodes on DVD's 1, 2 and 4 worked no problem. Four of the episodes on DVD 3 are useless because of a really bad picture. (I've heard similar problems on fibre=optic TV being called pixelation).  The settings I used for acidrip are as loaded by Pacman, the defaults.
It's the AVI's that have the problem. Converting a bad episode to MP4 doesn't help.
What settings can I change to resolve my problem. The episodes play fine over a regular TV so I know that the issues is something to do with the way acidrip is set up.
Any and all help or suggestions appreciated!!!
    Thanks.

i had some serious trouble ripping some copy protected dvds directly (without reencoding the content) to my harddrive. i'm usually using
    mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/scd0 -dumpstream -dumpfile dvd.vob
and in most cases this just works, but with some (probably copy protected) dvds i end up having pixel-salad (i dont know it that's what you're calling pixelation).
i found out, that to circumvent this problem (allowing mplayer a proper usage of libdvdread and libdvdcss) you need to unmount the dvd first.
try to rip the dvd with mplayer using the way i've posted above and make sure you have the dvd unmounted first. in case the result is still pixelated, i'm just out of clues.
i don't know if this helps you, but as nobody else seems to have an idea i just wanted to have it posted.

  • Will I lose a lot of quality ripping a dvd

This might have been asked but I searched and couldn't find a solid answer. If I rip a standard dvd I own in Handbrake with the Apple tv preset, will it look the same when I play it through ATV as if I was actually playing the real dvd in a dvd player or will I lose some quality? I want to get ATV to start putting allll my 300 movies on drives and accessing them through ATV but I don't want to lose any quality, I have a 52" lcd 1080p tv and I am pretty picky over the quality so this is a hit or miss for me with the atv. Thanks for any input or advice

Not necessairly true. The Fair Use law agrees with you. The DMCA law says you can't circumvent digital copy protection under any circumatances, which is what a ripped commercial DVD does. So which law wins? I don't think it's been tested in court yet head to head. But it's generally agreed that for the moment, you are not legally allowed to make a copy of a purchased copy protected DVD. The logic is that you don't own it as you have purchased the right to view it under their terms, not yours.
I don't agree with this at all, but this is where it appears to currently stand in the USA.

  • Acid rip or dvd::rip

Anyone here ever used acid rip or dvd::rip? just want to use one for mindless ripping for my psp. any opinions on which is best?
With video stuff, i find the command line a bit ironic and I can't generally be bothered with tinkering with parameters
I used to use DVD decrypter on windows but that was years ago

dvd::rip is quite simple and easy to use. If you don't want to mess with configuration it's the right choice. Never the less there are several possibilities to adjust the settings.
I am not able to say anything about acid rip cause i never used it before.
