Ripping DVD's to drive

I want to copy a few DVD's to my hard drive for a trip. I tried Mac the Ripper, but it turned out terrible. It was playing fast in some parts, no audio in some, and a different language in parts. The disc is Robots if that matters.
I set up for Main Feature Extraction in the Mode.
RCE Region 1
New Region 1
De-Macrovision
If you use a different app, I'd be willing to change, or if you can guide me through Mac the Ripper.
These are discs I own already.
Thanks

I have found that Yade X, is an excellent tool, much much better than Mac The Ripper.
You can find the program here:

It rips CSS-encrypted DVD's and non encrypted. I use it to extract one large VOB file to save on my hard drive to watch later. Very easy to use.

  • How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my iMac then move them to my iPads so my kids can watch them during a long drive?

How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my new iMac for viewing on my iPads and iPods (for kids during a long drive)? I've read about a lot of options, but I don't find anything that sounds authoritative on what is the ideal way. There is freeware out there and a bunch of paid options. I don't mind paying as long as I know what I'm getting will work. I've asked a few buddies and haven't gotten any straight answers. It seems like everyone has their own way that has its own set of benefits and issues. Any strong opinions out there on what works well (especially for a rookie)?

Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
The backing up part isn't illegal, but in order to do this you need to break copy protection..this part is.

  • DVD to hard drive? and then to... iPod?

I'm pretty new to a lot. I know it's possible I'm just not certain if I need to buy applications to convert the forat or anything
But, I'm trying to get a movie from a DVD to my computers hard drive and then from the hard drive to my 5th gen iPod.
Anyone know what is needed/what has to be done? or is this a big no-no?

Hey, I would love to help you, but as this would go around the copyright protection when burning the DVD to your hard-drive I can't. According to the terms of usage, "Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.", we aren't allowed to discuss this here.

  • Downloading files from DVD or hard drive cameras

Is it possible to download files from hard drive or dvd cameras to be used in Premiere without using the capture function which needs to be done in real time?

Importing files from a DVD camcorder or other MPEG device, or Ripping DVD files rarely results in success in Premiere... do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is designed to be for PLAYBACK only... and that includes trying to edit a Standard Def MPEG file!

There are other products better suited to your task... but if you only have DVD type files, you should convert to DV AVI

  • How to rip dvd's with newest MacBook Pro?

Hi, what is the best application to rip dvd's (with the latest MacBook Pro)? I want to save them and then edit in iMovie.
I've seen that Handbrake isn't suitable for 10.8.2 anymore.
    Thanks!!

I have seen a couple of posts about this, but they all seem to go in a different direction. The general theme of the problem is Handbrake not working on Mountain Lion but working on Snow Leopard.
Ever since I installed Mountain Lion on an external drive, I basically haven't been able to have Handbrake properly run. Using a disc as a source, it has wavered between stopping early with only about 5-10 minutes encoded to taking the full amount of time but only resulting in a short clip or a couple of short clips.
I think it has only worked once or twice total.
Since I still have Snow Leopard installed on my iMac original drive, I will often go back to that install and test HB and 99.99% of the time, it works without a hitch, thus giving me no other choice to believe it is something with ML or the HB install on ML at least.

  • Ripping DVD's: what to do about special features

What do you guys do about special features on DVD's? I rip everything to my drives, but then the AppleTV becomes a clutter of entries...

Well, I like to keep everything organized, so I encode the specials features as one file with the movie. They play after the movie plays. When Apple allows us to add chapters, then I will be able to just skip to them instead of fast-forwarding.Okay, I understand now. Actually, Apple already allows you to chapter your movies. However, if you do so in the normal fashion, then you will have to put everything in an MOV file container instead of MP4 or M4V containers. This means you cannot associate external "cover artwork" but, if you want to include it, embed it in your movie as a poster frame and limit dimensions to your frame size. You can use a program like Metadata Hootenanny to capture/insert chapters from your DVD or simply insert a single chapter marker at the beginning of your "special." In adddition to the "fast forwarding" capability of TV you mentioned, it also creates "pseudo" chapters of equal time intervals for "stepping" through your movie rather than "fast forwarding" if preferred. Unfortunately, they would probably not be very accurate for finding the start of your "special" content.

No, in most locations you are not legally allowed to copy your protected DVD's, however whether you are are not, the terms of use for these forums forbids the discussion of such things.

What you want to do is select the files you want to move then go File>Relocate Masters. Your images will then be referenced to a location you select. Aperture will still continue to manage the images, but the external hard drive must be connected if you want to make adjustments. Aperture will retain Metadata and any adjustment information. Your original images will stay unmodified on your external drive.

  • MPEG Streamclip ripping DVDs

i am using MPEG streamclip to rip DVDs into DV.
it works fine, except that it only does it in 4GB sements.
once it goes almost 20 miniutes into the movie, it stops and says "write error or disk full", leaving me with a 20 minute DV file, and PLENTY of room on the external HD i'm ripping it to.
it actually stops at the exact same file size every time, down to the byte, i dont remember the exact number, but it's about 4 GB.
i can rip it in segments, but i'd love to just let it create one file. I was wondering if anybody else has run into this before.
    thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, it's the formatting. You should reformat it as Mac OS Extended. Among other things, FCE requires it.
As you know, this will erase anything you currently have on the drive, so be sure to back up whatever you need to keep. But after formatting you will no longer have the 4GB file size limit.
The actual space available on a hard drive is always less than the advertised size; marketers use the term GB loosely; a 300GB drive is actually a 292GB drive by measurement; and when you format the drive, the formatting process requires space also, which is why you end up with 280GB of usable space on what's advertised as a 300GB drive.

  • Installing Complete New Yorker DVDs on hard drive

Can anyone suggest a way to install the Complete New Yorker DVDs on my hard drive? Is there an application that will create a virtual DVD drive on which I can load the images? Thanks.
    Mark

My reading of this section of Terms of Use is that it can't be done:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital
rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or
working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    Do not post defamatory material.
Any posts which would would be subject to locking and/or deletion, and/or dismissal from being allowed to post on the board. So do you really want anyone to take that risk for you?

  • Ripping DVDs - dumb question

    Hey all,
I'm putting together a demo video for a belly dance troupe and they want me to use footage from various performances over the years. The problem is that they only have the footage on DVDs. I told them that I'm not sure I'd be able to access the footage even if I were to rip them.
After some digging, I was able to find an app that rips AND converts to a .mov file. Unfortunately, the .mov file is unrecognized by FCP.
I brought a clip into QT and exported as an animation as well as straight up NTSC DV and FCP still says, "unrecognized file".
Does anyone know how to get around this issue (other than having them give me the original footage which they don't have)?
And before anyone says anything, I understand fully that ripping DVDs of movies is illegal, blah blah blah. That's not what I'm asking.
    Thanks gang,
    HJW

You need MPEG Streamclip. Free download here: http://www.squared5.com
Copy the VIDEO TS folder to your hard drive, open VOB1.1 in the application -and the others if you are asked. Fix TC breaks if this warning shows up.
Then: File > Export to QuickTime. Choose the DV codec and set quality to 100%.
Bring the resulting files into FCP.

I have some video that I'm watching using dvd player - ripped on the hard drive for better battery performance (I presume) and also just ease when traveling ... and bookmarks are grayed out.. cannot seem to bookmark things opened as "dvd media" from the file menu. how can I bookmark where I left off so I don't have to re-open, and fast forward to where I thought I was?
    tia,
    ferd

Have you ripped the file and kept it in DVD format?
If you rip it using HandBrake ( http://download.m0k.org/handbrake/HandBrake-0.7.1-OSX.zip ) then it will compress the video to mp4 which will be much smaller but still near DVD quality - you can then add it to iTunes or the Movies tab (on the left hand side of the Finder) and then using Front Row (pressing command + esc or menu on the apple remote) and going to movies you can watch the video, then when you stop watching you can go back to it later and it should play from where you left off.
