Ripping DVD to mov format

Hi there,
I was just wondering what is the best way to rip a DVD into mov format so that it can be edited easily in Final Cut. I know ripping from DVD makes it awful quality, but I have a few films I made years ago on DVD and DVD alone, so it would be nice to have a copy I can upload to the web, all be it poor quality.
So what do you suggest? Whats the cheapest and best option?
Cheers!

David,
Was I condescending? If so, I apologize. I took his reply to mean that he was insinuating that Tom was ripping a commercial DVD and using the material for a FCP project or for some other purpose. Was that not the implication? If not, then I apologize. If so, then I stand by what I said.
I never stated he didn't give a reply, best, worst, or otherwise. But the fact that his reply was 'conditional' and because of that, yes, it was insulting.
FWIW, his suggestion is fine. (though the question is curiously still unanswered. Perhaps the poster never checked back? Who knows?) If I have anything to offer to the OP I most certainly will. That is not my field, and I'm sure gogiangigo knows much more about it than I do. But that expertise still does not give anyone the right or moral high ground to preach, or rather, insinuate another is breaking the law without any proof whatsoever, beyond a mere simple and polite question.
As for me not 'offering' anything useful, let me get this straight. Wwhat you are saying is, since I have no suggestion to the ORIGINAL post, I can't post? I can't reply to another post in the thread? You aren't saying that, are you? Otherwise, you'd be guilty of that too, I'm afraid.
I have no problem apologizing to gogiangigo if I am offbase completely and he didn't mean to insinuate that Tom was breaking the law. If he states that, I'm all ears. Also, he might want to apologize to the original poster. And while we're at it, you might think about it too.
Look, bottom line is, the OP wanted help. The gogiangigo offered it, but only after a very lightly veiled comment about it being legit, as in legal, as in, the OP didn't, hopefully, perhaps, maybe, rip a commercial DVD. If you can't see that in the post, I can't help with that. Again, not my field.
I have no desire to get into a war over this. If my reply doesn't suit you, well...
My suggestion to you would be to ignore any post that you find laughable and/or curious.
Peace

  • Ripping DVDs - dumb question

    Hey all,
I'm putting together a demo video for a belly dance troupe and they want me to use footage from various performances over the years. The problem is that they only have the footage on DVDs. I told them that I'm not sure I'd be able to access the footage even if I were to rip them.
After some digging, I was able to find an app that rips AND converts to a .mov file. Unfortunately, the .mov file is unrecognized by FCP.
I brought a clip into QT and exported as an animation as well as straight up NTSC DV and FCP still says, "unrecognized file".
Does anyone know how to get around this issue (other than having them give me the original footage which they don't have)?
And before anyone says anything, I understand fully that ripping DVDs of movies is illegal, blah blah blah. That's not what I'm asking.
    Thanks gang,
    HJW

You need MPEG Streamclip. Free download here: http://www.squared5.com
Copy the VIDEO TS folder to your hard drive, open VOB1.1 in the application -and the others if you are asked. Fix TC breaks if this warning shows up.
Then: File > Export to QuickTime. Choose the DV codec and set quality to 100%.
Bring the resulting files into FCP.

  • ...ripping DVD material and saving as full movie...

...i've downloaded Mac the Ripper DVD extracting software but can't quite figure out how to extract the material as a full movie file( with audio) to re-edit as a clip that will be used in a project. I imported the VTS folder into FCP but not all the files were there and the video that was imported had no audio. I have full copyright from client and the DVD is NOT write protected. It's a archiving project of television commercials that are recorded onto VHS and DVD. anyone familiar with this technique? i would appreciate feedback. Thanks

Mmm... lots of Ripping these days...
You will want to use Mpeg Streamclip which you can
download HERE which is more suitable for
extracting and converting the files from the DVD, to
a format that can be used in FCP...
You can import the files you have ripped from
MactheRipper, and it will transcode them into a
    format of your choice.
It's free, and simple to use.

  • Converting dvd vidoes into a .mov format

If I convert my DVD videos into .mov format files for the web, will the Quicktime player or plug in be the only available player to open these files. Basically what I am asking is does everyone have to have the Quicktime player or plugin available to open these files?

.mov is a container file form, not a compression type. You can use any one of dozens of compressors for a .mov file. Widely used are mpeg-4 and Sorenson 3. Those will both play in QT 6. H264 is also being used a lot but it requires QT 7 to be installed.
By the way, the QT mpeg2playbackcomponent will not export mpeg-2 format. It is playback only. Also, note that QT will not export sound from muxed files like mpeg-1 or mpeg-2. This freeware will export to various formats with the sound included. Note that there are both Windows XP and Mac versions of this freeware. Mpeg StreamClip

  • Can apple tv and roku access same ripped dvd movies

    Had 2 roku's. Like 'em.
Ripped dvd's and stored on external. (about 150 movies)
Just bought the new apple tv
Do I now need to import all of the already ripped dvd's into itunes library in order to watch them on my apple tv
    (thus creating another separate file)
Or perhaps if they were all in itunes library, could roku access them ?
Maybe there's no way around this... but using roku / plex worked well and it was easy to get artwork etc
I did duplicate / import a couple movies into itunes. Get artwork - doesn"t seem to work for dvd ripped movies ?
Nature of the beast i'm guessing.....
    Any advice / direction appreciated.
    Thanks

You should be able to stream the video directly to the apple tv via itunes, without copying and creating another large file.
Just drag the movie files to your itunes.  It will take a few seconds and will "import" the movies.  Once created, you can right click the movie  in itunes and then select get info.  from there, you can give custom information, and even assign an icon or picture for the movie.  Look on line and you should be able to find dvd covers for most movies.
I do this all the time with my movies and also tv shows.

  • I can't convert a DVD video into my movie format?

I can't used my Quick Time Software with all futures, I want to convert from the CDRoom a DVD video to movie format into my computer, would you help with a good solution.
    Thanks

Are you referring to a commercial and hence copy-protected video DVD? If so, it's illegal in the US to attempt to break the copy protection, so we cannot help you with that question here.
If that's not what you mean, please post back and explain further. Feel free to post in your native language if you're more comfortable that way. There are people here who speak other languages and can probably help you more quickly.

  • I need an app for my Mac Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player

I need an app for my Mac Book Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player.  Thanks

    Quicktime can do this.
Open the MP4 in Quicktime Player. From the menu bar, File >Export > select quality. The subsequent file will be saved as .mov
Alternatively, you can simply change the extension on the mp4 file to mov since the codec is the same.
*I should mention that .mov format is not DVD format (TS_VIDEO), and the DVD will not play in a DVD player, even if you successfully burn the file to it.

  • Do any DVD players on the market support the .MOV format?

Our DVD player that the kids use with their TV has died. We need to buy a new one. However, I want one that will read the QuickTime .mov format. That way I can burn copies of videos I get from the web onto a blank DVD and watch with the new player.
Can someone point me in the right direction for finding one that will support .MOV?
    Thanks!

To answer your question, no. You need to convert the .mov to a format that a dvd player can read. Preferably to Mpeg-2. Quicktime can't convert videos to mpeg-2.
Toast can convert and burn the dvd.

  • 'Ripping' DVD movies for Windows

Is there anyone who could point me in the direction for an application that would allow me to rip dvd movies, but for Windows. All the other posts and applications I have found on the internet are for Mac, which is of no use to me.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to Discussions. Try this thread David Fernandez, "How To Copy DVDs to iPod using free software for Windows" #94, 02:32pm Nov 2, 2005 CDT. An alternative product is PQ DVD, which does it all in one app, but it does cost £35 if you want more than 8-12 mins. With the above, also be careful with sound tracks, as it is easy to get the directors cut instead of the actors, so always do a small test before doing a whole film.

  • Can iTunes change DVD's into a .mov format ?

So can iTunes change the format of a DVD into the format it needs to be put onto the video iPod cause this kid at my school says you can...But I put a DVD in and tried to import it and everything and nothing happened so am I doing something wrong or can iTunes convert DVD's to the iPod format?
    Thanks

Yea I figured you couldnt but maybe so I asked...So just google it for what I already have 2 converters but one has a watermake that says "Trial Version" and the other one only converts 5min of the DVD and that Videora has to install online and keeps saying "Server Timed Out" and then I have to restart the installation process for it. So what should I google?

  • How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my iMac then move them to my iPads so my kids can watch them during a long drive?

How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my new iMac for viewing on my iPads and iPods (for kids during a long drive)? I've read about a lot of options, but I don't find anything that sounds authoritative on what is the ideal way. There is freeware out there and a bunch of paid options. I don't mind paying as long as I know what I'm getting will work. I've asked a few buddies and haven't gotten any straight answers. It seems like everyone has their own way that has its own set of benefits and issues. Any strong opinions out there on what works well (especially for a rookie)?

Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
The backing up part isn't illegal, but in order to do this you need to break copy protection..this part is.

  • Ripping DVD's ready for iPod - Help Needed!!

    Hi All
I have been using Handbrake to rip my DVD's and for some reason it has stopped working now..
It goes through the process of encoding the files, all the settings are correct and I have noted the saved directory (even changed it a couple of times), and when it completes 100% there is no file to be found anywhere......
I have posted a note on the handbrake forum but got no reply yet.
Does anybody know what the problem may be?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
    Many thanks
    Garry

How long do you wait? Once conversion has completed, the YourFileName.temp file must be rewritten to your desitination location. This can take some seconds, depending on the size of your movie. While we're at it, is the temporary file even being created when conversion begins?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
Ripping/extraction of DVDs can be done by a number of Mac compatible appliations. MacTheRipper (free) is probably one the most popular at the moment. Stripping and/or conversion, however, still requires an ancillary application like MPEG2 Works 4 Advanced ($$) or MPEG StreamClip (free). However, since your were less than specific as to type (stream file, elementary streams, VCD compatible, SVCD compatible, DVD compatible, etc.) of target file desired, I can only generalize. Conversion basically depends on the workflow you utilize. Both applications have some "intrinsic" capabilities but, for the most part, rely on QT, QT Tools, and/or QT components you have installed and available. In addition, both application allow output to what is basically the QT Pro "Movie to QuickTime" export option. This simply means that in addition to the specific formats you mentioned, you also have full access to all of the same target QT formats you could normally access directly from your QT Pro application. (I.e., you can go directly from a VOB file or file segment to any available QT compatible compression format based on QT Pro and installed QT Pro components.)
REMINDER: These alternative compression formats are not iPod compatible.
ADDED: Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus ($$) will convert ripped/extracted DVD directly to iPod compatible formats.

  • Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
    Kind Regards,
    Julias

I am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
