Ripping DVDs for AppleTV?

Can I use a program like Popcorn to rip DVDs and convert them to some format that will stream to my AppleTV? If so, what format and settings would you recommend?
Thanks.

Yes, the user agreement does not allow you talk about the process of ripping/circumventing DRM stuff - I understand and agree with that. The original question is about using an off-the-shelf product and there are practical and legal applications for it.
I'm going to explain the process I would use if someone in my family created a DVD of their home movies with iDVD. This is completely legal for me to want to take that DVD and transfer it to my AppleTV.
1) Insert Family DVD into computer.
2) Use something like Popcorn to extract the contents to files on computer.
3) Use something like Handbrake to convert the movies into AppleTV MP4s.
4) Add the MP4 to my iTunes Library
5) Sync to my AppleTV
This is a completely legal process to describe. The key thing to know here is that using a program like Handbrake allows you to convert what you pulled off the DVD to an MP4 file suitable for AppleTV.
Good luck,
CR

  • About ripping dvd for encore

I did as wrote here http://forums.adobe.com/thread/423743?tstart=0, but I've got cutted video (black spaces on right and left sides) not 16:9, I mean not full width as in the original video from dvd. What is your advise?

It seems that your ripped footage *does* have the correct PAR.  Windows Media Player very often does not display widescreen footage properly.  However, almost every software DVD player *will* display the footage with the correct PAR.
Go ahead and import the footage into Encore, then check File>Interpret Footage.  Does your ripped footage behave like the screenshots below?

  • Ripping DVDs to iPhone

I have just read a couple of posts where some people are getting on their high horse about the fact that ripping DVDs is illegal in the US and therefore cannot be discussed on these forums.
I would like to remind everybody that these forums are available world-wide and that ripping DVDs for your own viewing pleasure is not illegal everywhere in the world.
    My American cousins, chill out!
Do you think that it is right for the USA to impose it's laws upon the rest of us? I do not, as we did not have the opportunity to vote upon this matter, nor did we vote for the lawmakers who made such a preposterous law. Do not forget, you guys tipped all our tea in the harbour to fight such injustices!

Sorry, but Apple explicitly prohibits discussions about ripping DVDs here in their forums:
"Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store."
Though the forums are read by people world-wide, the content is governed by US law and the US courts have in some cases ruled that even posting about breaking copy protection is a violation of the law. So while US law cannot and should not apply to you, it does apply to these forums. And regardless, it's Apple's system and they can make whatever rules they want.
The bottom line: discussions about ripping DVDs is not allowed here. If you can't or don't wish to abide by those terms, don't participate. There are plenty of other forums that either aren't based in the US or are (usually because they're not run by a major corporation that would get the content owners after them) willing to risk such discussions.

  • Ripping DVDs using Quicktime!

Ok, I have Quicktime Pro, and I understand that you can use it to rip DVDs for your Ipod. But...how do you do it? Help, please? Thanks!

No. Quicktime does not rip. You can rip the DVD using another program and convert it using Quicktime.
Do a search on these forums for "DVD" and you'll find threads teaching you how to do it.

  • Ripping DVD's ready for iPod - Help Needed!!

    Hi All
I have been using Handbrake to rip my DVD's and for some reason it has stopped working now..
It goes through the process of encoding the files, all the settings are correct and I have noted the saved directory (even changed it a couple of times), and when it completes 100% there is no file to be found anywhere......
I have posted a note on the handbrake forum but got no reply yet.
Does anybody know what the problem may be?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
    Many thanks
    Garry

How long do you wait? Once conversion has completed, the YourFileName.temp file must be rewritten to your desitination location. This can take some seconds, depending on the size of your movie. While we're at it, is the temporary file even being created when conversion begins?
Also, does anybody know of an application that will rip DVD's so that they are iPod ready, or maybe into MPG/MPEG/AVi format.
Ripping/extraction of DVDs can be done by a number of Mac compatible appliations. MacTheRipper (free) is probably one the most popular at the moment. Stripping and/or conversion, however, still requires an ancillary application like MPEG2 Works 4 Advanced ($$) or MPEG StreamClip (free). However, since your were less than specific as to type (stream file, elementary streams, VCD compatible, SVCD compatible, DVD compatible, etc.) of target file desired, I can only generalize. Conversion basically depends on the workflow you utilize. Both applications have some "intrinsic" capabilities but, for the most part, rely on QT, QT Tools, and/or QT components you have installed and available. In addition, both application allow output to what is basically the QT Pro "Movie to QuickTime" export option. This simply means that in addition to the specific formats you mentioned, you also have full access to all of the same target QT formats you could normally access directly from your QT Pro application. (I.e., you can go directly from a VOB file or file segment to any available QT compatible compression format based on QT Pro and installed QT Pro components.)
REMINDER: These alternative compression formats are not iPod compatible.
ADDED: Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus ($$) will convert ripped/extracted DVD directly to iPod compatible formats.

  • What is the best DVD-ripping software for mac?

what is the best DVD-ripping software for mac?

Handbrake to copy to avi or mp4(I use it for watching my DVD's on the go, so my battery lasts for a longer time)
I think MP4 is better quallity.
To copy a DVD: simply use Toast (maybe withe popcorn, but I don't use it).
But, be legal! This is a forum, and anyone can see your posts!

  • What is the best program to Rip DVD with 5.1 audio for Mac Book

I just purchased a Macbook Pro and want to rip DVD's. I want to retain the 5.1 audio tracks. What is the best program for this? Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.   Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature.
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. I'm not sure how it handles 5.1 audio, though, if it will at all.
    Regards.

  • Whats the best settings to rip DVD to Mpeg Streamclip for use in FCE??

    Hi there.
Ok, I using MPEG Streamclip to rip a DVD for editing on FCE.
Whats the best settings to get it to my hard drive?
    MPEG4?? Compression rate??
    Chris

Assuming your DVD plays widescreen, the better settings in MPEG Streamclip would be:
    Export to QuickTime
    Compression = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 1920x1080
Pretty much everything else should remain at default settings.
Keep in mind that if you have an NTSC DVD, the resulting QT/AIC video will be 60i.
In FCE, select the AVCHD 1920x1080i60 easy setup, create a new sequence, import the converted file and edit away. The quality should be very nice.

  • Copying DVD's and VHS's onto HD and incorporating into iTunes for AppleTV

I'm needing a good all-around application for digitizing and then transporting my home DVD's, VHS's and even old cassette audios into my iTunes for AppleTV viewing. I'm wanting a completely digital world, backed up by my new Drobo. What I'm needing is a good application to do all this. Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but I don't know where else to ask these questions.

Kelly, try visiting the site Life Hacker (www.lifehacker.com) for some guidance. In addition to really good content that could answer your questions, they have a great user discussion area where you can post questions like this and receive recommendations, advice, etc. Don't get me wrong, the user support offered here in the Apple Discussions is awesome and if you get an Apple TV, this is the place to come for support and advice. But if you're still in the decision-making stage, a site like Life Hacker is probably where you want to go for information.

  • 'Ripping' DVD movies for Windows

Is there anyone who could point me in the direction for an application that would allow me to rip dvd movies, but for Windows. All the other posts and applications I have found on the internet are for Mac, which is of no use to me.
    Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to Discussions. Try this thread David Fernandez, "How To Copy DVDs to iPod using free software for Windows" #94, 02:32pm Nov 2, 2005 CDT. An alternative product is PQ DVD, which does it all in one app, but it does cost £35 if you want more than 8-12 mins. With the above, also be careful with sound tracks, as it is easy to get the directors cut instead of the actors, so always do a small test before doing a whole film.

  • Rip dvd's into itunes/ipod???

Hi -- with itunes 6 and the new ipod, how can I transfer my own video files to the ipod? can i rip a dvd I own to itunes/ipod???
    -Eric

I don't understand the snobbery attached to paying a few dollars for a piece of software when all of us spend thousands on equipment.
All the mentioned software is available for download and tryout, if you like you buy - simple!
For me "DVD to AppleTV Converter" runs incredibly slow on my Quad as it doesn't support multi-processing, so no good. I have no idea of the quality of it's conversions because I binned it as soon as I realised this flaw and wasn't prepared to pay for a product that failed to utilise the power of my machine.
"VisualHub" however is amazing. The quality is great, and it's fast - maxing out all four processors, so I have no problem shelling out a few quid for it.
"Mediafork" is another great utility, and has the advantage of being able to rip straight from a dvd, and the quality is great.

  • Best Ripping software for Apple TV

What is the best ripping software for Apple TV. I had Handbrake that I've used to rip DVDs to put into iTunes. Right now I don't have ATV but I will be getting it soon. Should this do the trick? or is there a better program that has better results?

I've used the AppleTV setting to rip/convert a bunch of movies, and they look pretty great. The default setting is 2500 for Apple TV in Handbrake. If you watch a lot of foreign movies like I do, remember to check the audio & sub-title sections, to make sure they're set correctly, or you'll have a lot of movies that have the director giving his commentary! (I learned that the hard way, and had to re-convert about 15 movies!)

  • Movies for AppleTV

Besides iTunes, is there any other seller for AppleTV-ready movies? iTunes is fine but the selection is rather limited.

Considering that movies purchased through the iTunes store are copy protected with Apple's own encryption scheme I think it's unlikely that you will be able to find another source. Movies from other sources such as Amazon's Unbox service are also copy protected using Microsoft's encryption scheme so I doubt that you could convert them to Apple TV compatible m4v files.
There are other threads in this forum dealing with the ripping and converting of DVDs, so you might want to look around.
