Ripping DVDs to iTunes/iPod?

I want to put a DVD onto the computer so I can then put it onto my iPod. My brother put the first POTC movie onto my iPod, and want to put others on, but I don't know how and the software my brother used (Sompy) seems to hate my computer.
So, can anyone help me out here? What FREE software can I use to get the DVD onto my computer? I know that iTunes will convert it to mp4 format so that's okay, I'm just having trouble getting the damned thing onto the computer in the first place.
Thanks!

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
    Kind Regards,
    Julias

I am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
my ipod will only upload video podcasts, no ordinary videos, except for one. they are all the same format (.MOV quicktime), and my i tunes has them all on it and plays them fine there, its just when i drag and drop or insert my videos onto my ipod any other way theydont get uploaded onto my ipod like everything else does, there seems no way that i can get my own videos onto it. only one video that isnt a podcast has ever uploaded, and its the same format as the others!
Any ideas or help would be apprichiated ( i cant spell:P)

  • How to rip DVD to iTunes for AppleTV?

    Hi all,
I am new to the mac world and interested in how best to rip a DVD to iTunes for use in AppleTV?  Using 2010 Mac Mini.  Thanks!

I use "Mac DVD Ripper Pro" to rip the DVD to my iMac (not free but works well), then use handbrake to convert to a iTunes friendly format (just use the AppleTv 2 preset).
I do it this way so i can rip several, and then load all of them into the  handbrake queue and let it process them over night.
Then i use iDentity to add the metadata to the file and add to iTunes.

  • Is there a way to transfer DVDs to itunes/ipod?

im trying to transfer my Michael Jackson's Visions dvd to my ipod touch. i know you can buy it in itunes, but i don't want to rebuy the movie just so it can be put on my ipod touch. i wanted to see if the imovies app would work but it seems to just be for mac.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

Before you start to crop your movie video, you can select an output aspect ratio from the Zoom list. There are four choices available: Full screen, Keep original, 16:9 and 4:3. After you select an output aspect ratio and finish the crop, the result can be previewed in the Preview window of the program main interface.

  • Ripping DVD to iTunes

Having trouble ripping a DVD to iTunes, it plays in real player just fine.

You have to extract/demux the audio portion from DVDs using a tool like MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
As most commercial DVDs come CSS encrypted in this case you have to use a so called Ripper to copy the DVD's content first to your HD.

  • Ripping DVDs inti ITunes

Am I able to rip my DVDs into Itunes to synch onto my IPad & IPhone?? If so how?

I doubt that Warner considers copy protection to be a "waste of time". Instead, it's that they are producing less-popular titles as "made to order" and cannot put copy protection on those one-off DVDs; it's not technically possible. I very much doubt that they'll drop copy protection on the mass-produced DVDs, though of course we can all hope.
In any case, though, you're right; there are some studio-released DVDs that do not carry copy protection. Most still do, though.

  • Ripped DVD video to iPod

I bought my kids video iPods for Christmas. I've ripped many DVD's of movies and TV shows I have. Then used MoviesForMyPod to convert to format for the iPod.
All of the videos play fine in iTunes 6.0.1. I haven't opened the new iPod videos before I give them as gifts and was hoping if someone has done ripping of their own DVD's, if they play fine on the iPod?
I want my kids to get up and running on Christmas morning with the iPod so I've done this in advance.

  • Ripping Dvds To Your Ipod

I want to put some dvds onot my 160gb ipod...how do i rip them to it?!

You can't via any iTunes supported method.
There are ways to do it, but you will need to navigate away from any Apple supported page to find it.
See this thread for more details.

  • Can't put ripped DVD files onto iPod

I've ripped a couple of 1.5hr video files to MPEG4 format using Xilisoft's DVD to iPod software (very good by the way) but I can't get these files onto my iPod (I've checked them in Quicktime and they look fine).
I've tried importing into the library then manually dragging and dropping, but they just won't copy (I don't get any warning message either). Syncing doesn't work either.
    Anyone got any ideas?

What exactly happnes when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

  • Ripping DVDs to iTunes 7

I have just moved to Australia from the UK and bought a new mac mini (intel duel core) and can't watch any of my DVDs shipped from the UK as they are region 2. With iTunes 7 incorporating movies, is there a way of ripping them all to a format I can store, then import to iTunes 7?

You could purchase an external DVD/CD burner and set it to region2 and watch your DVD's that way and have the internal drive set to your new home region.
As noted you can use several different programs to change the region code to "All" or "none" and the new DVD will play on any player. If you have the time then that is another way.

I got a 30G ipod for my birthday recently but i cant seem to put my dvds on it. A friend suggested that I download a rip hardware but I can't seem to find one that works on Windows and is free . Does anyone know of anything that might help???

You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).
Be aware that this question will attract the spammers who infect these forums and are trying to sell you something. You don't need to buy anything, and there are many free converters in the link I provided.
