Ripping from DVDs

I'm trying to put together a reel and have been supplied with a bunch of my footage on DVD. I use Handbrake to rip to avi and figure it's best to convert to DV in Compressor before operating in FCP.
I'm encountering a problem that Compressor only sees the first few seconds of the avi files so I end up getting just a few seconds of bars. Is this an issue with my capture settings in Handbrake?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a workflow for ripping from DVD? Should I be ripping to avi? Is Handbrake even the way to go? Should I try something else?
Thanks,
Stef

Hello.
This question gets asked quite often, in fact, it was asked this morning.

  • Apple TV speeds up video playback on files ripped from DVDs - it looks like it's being fastforwarded slightly.

I just set up my Apple TV 2, only to find playback issues from the start.
Whenever I try to play videos from iTunes, the playback is noticeably faster than it should be. It's almost as if the video is slightly sped up, and the audio is in sync with this. The aspect ratio is also very different on some of these videos (and this doesn't correct on my TV as it does on my laptop screen) - by which I mean that the picture appears stretched on some, but not others. These are files I have ripped from my DVD collection.
What can I do about this?

    Ok, now I understand.
I haven't directly used those digital copies, per your original post it sounds is as it plays fine in iTunes but just not on apple tv
Here is the compatibility list for ATV2, in iTunes right click and get info for one of the files to see if it falls within
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • PE11 Rip from DVD- putting a menu on- burning that to DVD ruins quality

First, I've read some things here and there, but can't find the exact same scenarios in other posts, although I'm sure this is a fairly common problem (SIAP):
Here is a summary of the issue:
    1) Our guy produced a video for our organization and gave me a DVD-R of the 11 minute project. I imported this into PE11 and on the timeline it says .VOB. Now on the desktop, the 481 mb VTS_01_1 file properties state that it is 720x480, 29 fps... although I find it strange that the clip as imported into PE11 in properties in the project assets window says it's 23.976 frame rate. Making things more confusing (don't even know if any of this matters) is that in an instance of Share->Export to Computer, the "source" says the video is 1920x1080, 29.97 fps. Don't know if any of this matters...
    2) Anyways, the reason I ripped it is for the sole purpose of creating a menu on the DVD. So I picked a "HD" template, imported my own JPEG on to it, then attempted as best I could to erase all the buttons except for "Play Movie." AGain, not sure if the Menu functionality has anything to do with the issue, but I figured I'd mention it.
    3) I've tried several times burning the video with both DVD-R and +R using both NTSC Dolby and Widescreen Dolby to burn to DVD.
The resulting DVD has a degraded, fuzzy image and the black frame lines at bottom and top seem to bounce and jitter.
The image on the original DVD is clearly HD and looks great, without any bouncing, jittering, etc. Also, the DVD app i used to watch the original on my computer is the same as I used to watch my own burned DVD... So PE11 has clearly degraded the image, something is going on in the export.
Another thing worth mentioning is that as I look at the video footage in PE11 on full screen, I can see that even in PE11, the video quality is not the same as the original DVD and there are obvious artifacts and just nonsense in the picture... Not necessarily as bad as the burn, but similar.
I've done a little reading on these forums about .VOB files... I don't fully understand them. Is it that the image is messed up from the beginning with an import from DVD? IS there a way to do what I want (take hiqual video from a DVD, put a menu on it, then burn it back onto DVD?) with PE11? Or is the only way to make a burn from the original source file before it was burned the first place?

Please get a MediaInfo readout of your VOB at the onset to determine what you have, especially standard or widescreen.
    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
Special Interest: Frame size, Frame rate, Display 4:3 or 16:9, Scan Type and Scan Order for which I am expecting Interlaced and Lower Field First.
Here is my take on your situation.
    1. The Canon 6D can capture 1080p video (1920 x 1080 16:9 at 29.97 or 30 frames per second), but from what you wrote somewhere along the line someone put that through a video "authoring" program to convert it into DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc (720 x 480). At this point, we need to know standard or widescreen. Both standard and widescreen will be 720 x 480, but the widescreen will have a 16:9 flag included to stretch the video for display after encoding.
    Question:
    a. What is on that DVD disc....just a file name VTS_01_1 (file size 481 MB) or two folders named OpenDVD and VIDEO_TS? If you have a file, for Premiere Elements 11, you would use Add Media/Files and Folders to get the file in Project Assets. If you have the DVD disc in the DVD burner tray, you would use Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive to rip the VOB and get the VOB into the project.
b.Your project is going to get messed up and confusing, if you let the program set the project preset for you. You will most likely end up with the default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is inappropriate for your project. So, before thinking or acting on Get Media....open a new project, go to File Menu/New/Project and set the project preset in the New Project dialog for NTSC DV Standard or NTSC DV Widescreen depending on what you find beforehand about the properties of your VOB MediaInfo Then use Add Media/and the appropriate choice based on what I wrote above about VOB already ripped vs DVD-VIDEO ripping.
    c. When you have your VOB on the TImeline with the appropriate project setting, right click the file in Project Assets and verify Premiere Elements 11's interpretation of the file frame rate and other to determine if it agrees with the MediaInfo readout. It would be very unusual if there was a differnce, but...
    d. Whether you have a NTSC or PAL project, all the SD DVD Templates have a frame size of 720 x 576 (PAL sizing). The ones tagged HD have a 1440 x 1080 frame size. Right now I would advise you to stay with the SD ones, but not be afraid to experience with a HD choice if it appealing and see what happening during encoding.
    e. In all this, you did not say what the duration is of this 481 MB VOB file. The standard DVD disc is spec'd at 4.7 GB/120 min. That 4.7 GB in reality is 4.3 GB. You will frequently see the recommendation "for best results, do not exceed 90 minutes on this standard type disc". When you have your DVD disc in the DVD burner tray and are in the burn dialog of Publish+Share/Disc/DVD make sure to check the Quality Area of the burn dialog for the Space Required and Bitrate reading (8.00 Mbps is the max reading).
Based on what you wrote, I suspect that most of your problems were related to incorrect project settings. By the way, if you want to get rid of a menu button text, most of the time double click the text to bring up the Change Text dialog, highlight the text there, hit the delete key of the computer, then hit the space bar or enter key.
If you are replacing the menu's audio, max 30 sec with looping. If you use motion buttons in the menu, max 4.9 seconds. After you get the details of the project setup OK, we can focus in more on the menus...number of Timeline markers etc, and customization of the menus from within the program.
Lots of details. The answers and successes will be in the details. All the contributors here have given you a lot of ideas for exploration and experimentation.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
Looking forward to learning of your progress.
    Thanks.

  • Best way to rip from DVD

what is the best way or best software to rip from a dvd movie ?
im using handbreake im saving Avi file but when i go to FCP to work with the files it needs too much render what am i doing wrong ?

Are you dealing with a copy-protected DVD? If so, this is really an inappropriate place to be asking these questions? If not, use mpegstreamclip and export to a quicktime (DV ntsc or pal depending on which you want to work with).

  • Ripping from DVD

Hello -- I have been asked to take footage from a DVD - not a commercial one, just one that they put their own footage on, & edit. So far, I've just been copying it onto a VHS, then importing that footage into my computer, then editing. But, am I able to download something like Mac the Ripper, and if so, does it 'rip' in real time? Or, is there something else I would have to buy, in order to do this? Thank you.
    Kristina

MPEG Streamclip is free too and is more orientated to DVD format extracting/encoding than MacTheRipper . . . that is more orientated to do . . . well, that!

  • Ripping from DVD Problem

    Hey all-
I recently borrowed a relatives DVD recorder to transfer over some old tapes to DVD. I thought I'd burn them straight from VHS to DVD, then import them into my Mac and cut out the worthless stuff using FCE. This really had been a problem though. I have tried using Mactheripper, which seems to be the fastest, but there is no audio whatsoever. I am currently trying my hand with streamclip, but that is taking forever. Does anyone have any suggestions or know why there is no audio?
    Thanks!

Mac the Ripper doesn't do what you want.

  • Have a windows rip from DVD how to get in IMOVIE

Back when I only had windows I did some minor editing with with a windows program and acquired some files I use for the heck of it.
I have several files for the DTS,Dolby etc intro screens.
The thing is they are in MPEG/AC3 format and I tried just importing them into IMovie and it won't work.
Any suggestions. I just want to have these "clips" to throw in in front of movies every so often.
I know dork....if I do will it also be 5.1 surround?

You need to convert these clips into DV format.
Try MPEG Streamclip (free) with the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin ($20).
VisualHub ($23) will probably work, too. They have a free trial that works with short clips.

  • Some movies from DVD won't show up on ATV

I'm having a problem with ripped movies.
Some movies ripped from DVDs I own do not show up on ATV. (Streaming)
For example, I ripped 2 disc set of "The Lord of the Rings: Extended edition" by HandBrake 0.8.5b1, using exact same setting (FFmpeg 4, 2300kbps).
I see both files on iTunes. I see the disc 2 on ATV and it plays just fine, but not disc 1. Disc 1 does not show up on ATV under Movies section.
Restarting iTunes, Mac itself, ATV or re-pairing ATV with Mac didn't work.
Do you have any idea what I'm missing here?
    Thanks for your advice.
    [Setup]
    iTunes Server: MacBook C2D
Movie Files: Stored on an External USB drive connected to AEBS (802.11n)
MacBook C2D (Black, 2GB RAM) Mac OS X (10.4.9) Apple TV, iPod Shuffle (Aluminum), Airport Extreme (n)

It may be worth checking you've got the correct sound settings.
I converted a recorded TV show into a mov using H264 encoding and AAC, or so I thought.
I cannot see the file on aTV and if I sync it say the movie cannot play on aTV.
The reason looks to be that the audio was erroneously saved as an incorrect format (Integer, Big endian) - no idea if this was a conversion glitch or user error, but I was convinced it was the video rate when it's probably the audio all along!

  • Ripped TV Shows from DVDs do not show up in iPod TV Shows category/folder

I have ripped some DVD TV shows and want them on my iPod. I have properly used the ID tag (Under Show Info, Options tab) to choose TV Show as the correct "Video Kind". But still they don't show up on my iPod in the TV Shows folder. Other videos that are from music CDs I have labeled Music Videos but they show up on my iPod in the Movies Folder.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Ripped audio from DVD to FCP

Once I've used a ripping program like Mac the Ripper to get video and audio files from DVD, how do I get the audio only onto a cd?

    Geez David.
I kinda noted that. The question is where are the original unencoded audio sources? Is this music? Or someone talking? If it is music, use the the sources if they are not copyrighted.
You don't need "Mac the Ripper" to extract unencrypted or non copyrighted DVDs.
We get so many requests here about extracting VOBs from DVDs.
Given the terms of use, and laws about extracting from commercial DVDs, many of us are suspicious when a "client" brings in an encoded DVD and wants it "reauthored" for his reel.
Now this isn't you, but when I say get the original source of audio, then I wonder why it isn't available.
Or why didn't the DVD simply contain aiff audio files as a data DVD
    take care

  • Ripping video from DVDs for FCP

I want to create an assignment for students (I teach a very basic video editing ocurse) where students will rip some video from various commercially available DVDs to practice editing their own trailers together with scenes from the movies. In the educational environment it is legal to rip short clips of video from DVDs.
I think I'm going to use MPEG Streamclip for doing this
    1. Does anyone have any tips for preparing ripped footage to make sure it looks good in a FCP sequence? Is there anything you should do with the footage in FCP to make it look good?
    Thanks.

David is right. MPEG Streamclip will not rip commercial DVDs.
It may well be legal in education to rip discs, however discussion of the process is not permitted here.
Once you have that aspect sorted out...
I have a tutorial for MPEG Streamclip here: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • Rip From LiteOn Recorded DVD

    Hello,
I used to import media directly from DVDs recorded using my Philips DVD Recorder (standalone, not drive). The Philips went Kaput and I bought a Panasonic. I then discovered that Premiere Elements will not work with discs recorded on the Panasonic. My friend has a LiteOn DVD recorder and will trade with me if I want to. Does anyone know if Premiere Elements will import from DVDs recorded using LiteOn?
    Thanks,

  • Importing from DVD to iTunes 7 on Windows XP -- blue screen crash?!?

    Hi,
I'm trying to import a DVD of music I burned from my iTunes library on my iMac to a Windows XP laptop. The first disc burned just fine, but the second one crashed with a blue screen error (though it flashed by too quickly to get the particulars). After re-booting, when I open iTunes, it continues to rip the DVD just fine. Until I insert the next DVD, when the same thing happens all over again.
I have already authorized the windows machine with my iTunes password. The iMac is an intel core duo running OS 10.4 and the laptop is a T61 Thinkpad dual core processor (2.4gHz?) with Windows XP and 4 gigs of RAM.
Does anyone know what is going on or what I need to do to fix it?

  • ITunes crashes when importing/ripping from CD

This has been a niggling, occasional problem in the last months that is now consistent.
I cannot get iTunes on my W2K computer to import/rip from a CD. When I try, the progress bar shows no progress for many minutes (even if I request to just import one song), and then one of the following happens:
    - iTunes quits
    - the computer locks up
    - I get a blue screen with very little info
Any ideas? I get this issue with either drive: my CD-ROM and my DVD burner. I'm considering completely uninstalling and reinstalling both iTunes and Quicktime, and doing the same for each of my CD drives.

I may not get that far though. On a whim, I checked to see if iTunes could even play the CDs - it can't. It indicates that it's playing, but the progress bar is still. There is also no sound.
I verified with the little CD player that comes with Windows. it too has the same problem on the same tracks (the problem gets worse as you go further into the CD). This is true for both my CD-ROM, and my Lightscribe DVD burner. With that, it sounds to me like a system problem that an iTunes fix can't solve.
I have no idea where to go, 'cept for uninstalling and reinstalling the drives. Sounds to me like I'm reloading Windows. High time, as I've been running this installation for over 3 years.
