Ripping Home Video DVD's

I've got a giant stack of Camcorder Videos in crazy formats. Is there an Apple OS X program that lets me rip my personal DVD's into a single video rather than VIDEO & AUDIO TS?

Hi,
You may use MPEG STREAMCLIP, it will give you a .mov file of your videos
The only thing is that these files will be very big in size...
Hope it helps..

  • Import home video DVD's into iMovie

I want to import my home video DVD's into iMovie for editing and backup. What is the best way to do this? I have already tried creating a disk image, but somehow when I open these images with iMovie, some parts of the original video are missing. (for example the video on DVD is 60 minutes, but the video opened on iMovie is 50 minutes). I also tried to convert to MPEG 2 using MPEG Streamclip, and purchased the MPEG2 Playback component from Apple Store, but it turns out that this component was intended for earlier versions of OS X, so I could not even install it. I am currently at a lockdown, please help me out!!!

There are directions on the MPEG Streamclip website on how to get the MPEG2 Playback component installed on your computer (I'm assuming your running Mac OS X 10.7). I'm cutting and pasting them here in case someone else runs into the same problems.
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component
The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard
Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).
If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg": if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on "Account" in the store menu, then click "Downloadable Software Purchases," enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.
If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

  • When playing a home video DVD using DVD Player I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

When playing a home video DVD (created on my Panasonic DVD/Hard Disc recorder)  using the Mac DVD Player, I tried to use the "Controls, Use current frame as jacket picture" facility to create a printable image but with no success. I assume that any file created by this action would be stored somewhere in a common format but cannot find any such file. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Hi Sinious,
Interesting to know about 10.8 and Flash. I'll hold off upgrading until they work together. Currently using 10.6.8 at home and same on the Universtity's computers.
Haven't verified on Windows but shall do later in the week if I can get access to a Windows machine.
Both the Flash player and the Projector come up not full screen, and if I leave it that way then things work OK as long as I don't make the video full screen (using the full screen button on the skin).
However if I make the swf or projector full-screen (by using CMD-F or the menu option) then when I click on the menu item to take me to the page with the video on it, instead of a page with a smallish video and back button I get a black screen with no obvious controls. If I then press Escape I get my normal screen back and I am in the page that should have the video but there is not video and the back button does not work. So something wierd is going on here.
If I make a file without any videos with a similar navigation structure everyting works ok except that when I go full screen I lose the finger cursor when I roll over my buttons (which is also wierd).

  • Copying Home video DVD, converting PAL to NTSC

I have a home video DVD in PAL format that I would like to convert to NTSC. I have tried to look up the settings in Disk Utility but that was no help.
Can this be done through iMovie? I don't have FCP so I understand I'm at a big disadvantage here. Any help?

  • Ripping home made dvd's so I can edit on imovie 09?

I have an editing job, but for the life of me have been able to get my mac to recognize my Canon ZR-80 mini dv camcorder. I took it to the apple store, and there mac's wouldn't recognize it either. They wanted me to make an appointment and bring my imac with me, so they can troubleshoot. I said that your mac's dont recognize it either, so why should I bring my mac? they said in case they need to download software.
I'm not going to do that, so the customer suggested that the use a DVD Camcorder and just give me the disks.
Question 1: Can a imac play a mini dvd?
Question 2: What software can I use to rip the dvd? I would prefer to use just one software that can do the whole job.
Question 3: If the imac cannot play mini dvd's, what would you suggest? don't have the money to buy another camcorder. Thought about asking for advance so I can buy a new camcorder.

.. DVDxDV advertises no video quality loss, so I wonder about them. I have a PC also, maybe I can rip the dvd there.
that's marketing.. I do recommend DVDxDV for converting when you don't need any options, you need DVDs 'as a whole', single-click-app .. fact is: is a DVD is mp2 encoded, an interframe codec with a - sometimes - too low bitrate.. for editing, you need an intraframe codec.. interframe doesn't store every frame, just the 'differences' between frame #1 and #2 .. (.. 12, 13, 14, keyframe= fully stored) - so, where should the lossless-info come from for the non-keyframes? ..
=> there HAS to be a loss, due to usage of DVD. not of software...-
They tried swapping firewire cables at the apple store and that didnt work either. If I were to purchase a new camera, which one would you prefer that is compatible with imovie 09? I prefer mini dv for editing.
so, final assumption is: cam kaputt . last try: pull out any battery in device for about an hour.. that could reset ports of device..
any miniDV you can afford does work with iMovie..
but there is a huge 'but' ..
iM09 is, as long discussed here, not choice #1 for handling miniDV/Standard. the long discussed skip-field-problem.. there are workarounds avail, the free one on a website, I'm participating with:
    http://sites.google.com/site/theimovieoutputproject/
(giving you in-depth info, where and why there are probs with i-footage.. )
or, switch to HDV (=HiDef on miiDV), and use 720p for recording
so, two and a half men options:
    • use iMHD6 for miniDV and lossless handling of DV
    • consider the plunge to FCE - handles DV lossless too, plus a pro-editor
    • consider an actual AVCHD-device, record in 720p, use iM09 or FCE4.01 (720p or 1080i)

  • Import home videos onto ITunes

How can i import my home videos/ DVDs onto Itunes just as you can import your audio CDs onto Itunes?

I had home videos that were sat in my iTunes library no problem but I couldn't get them across to my iPhone, even putting them in their own playlist, ticking all the right tabs in the synch menu etc. After a lot of playing around I found that if you right click on the video, select Get Info, go to Options and then in 'Media Kind', manually change it to Music Video and it will then happily go into the music videos playlist and will synch straight across.
    Hope this helps.

Look elsewhere (via the search at the right).
MPEG-2 component and MPEG Streamclip are what you need.

  • Importing home video into iMovie not working

When I load my home video dvds they play with DVD Player but I want to import it into iMovie. When opening iMovie I select File/Import/Movie, select the DVD on the desktop and click on import. I then get this message: Nothing to Import... no importable movies were found...
These home videos were burned on a PC with Roxio over the last several years. Unfortunately our home was broken into, computers stolen and these dvds are my only back up. Now trying to figure out how to save them to my new iMac and do some more work with them. Do I need to purchase Quick Time Pro to import to iMovie?

Hi there, I have a question that maybe you can point me in the right direction. I was reading this post and you say to convert over to a DV. Is this done in imovie? I too am trying to import home movies into imovie so I can edit them. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

You're not dealing with your typical DVD-Video data structure with a SONATA_VOLUME.  This type of data structure is designed to prevent someone from extracting the data and it's very effective at doing so.  You've probably already found that the applications that allow you to copy, extract and convert the standard DVD-Video data structure (a "VIDEO_TS" volume) will not work with a SONATA_VOLUME (apps like Toast, MactheRipper and Handbrake).
While making a digital copy is pretty much not an option with a SONATA_VOLUME, capturing the video and sound via an analog to digital capture usually works just fine.  Of course, that's not nearly as simple as popping the disc into your computer and a drag and drop or just clicking "convert" or "extract" and waiting for the copy or conversion to finish.
Do you have any video hardware for capturing analog video?  A MiniDV camcorder will do the trick if your Mac has a FireWire port.  You'll also need video capture software.  I'd recommend a version of iMovie that supports DV-NTSC, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.
My Sony DVD recorder creates SONATA_VOLUMES while my Panasonic DVD recorder creates VIDEO_TS folders.  The Sony is unplugged and sitting in the corner.

QuickTime Player is not itself able to do this. You need a proper DVD authoring solution such as Apple's iDVD.

I had a av cord that plugged into the iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 but its not compatible with the 5 connector. Right now i have to email myself the videos in small segments and open and save on the iPad 2 to burn them.  Is there an easier way to burn these from my iPhone 5 or through air play on apple tv?
    Thanks

Connect the phone by USB to the computer, import with image capture, iPhoto or whatever application you use to import movies, drop it into iTunes.

Hi guys, we ofter met problems in using iPod, such as when we meet with a beloved movies we are in trouble to enjoy it on our iPod. Thus I write this document that shows how to rip and convert DVDs or other videos to your iPod MP4.
    1. First of all, please download ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe
    2. Install it and open your local DVD by clicking "Add DVD Folder" button under "File" menu.

If you don’t have an iTunes yet, please download it freely here:
    3. Pull the file list under the iTunes to your iPod. Then you will see the file name under ‘Recently Added’ list of your iPod menus.

Thanks! But when I visit the site recently, I found the program was upgraded. Now it has 2 optimized output formats specially made for iPod 30G and 60G players! Thus it is easier and more convenient to use without complex settings as other software. Try it at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod.converter.exe
Another good news: there was a new discount suite ImTOO DVD to iPod Suitethat contains both the DVD to iPod Converter and iPod Movie Converter. It saves newly $20! Hope this can do some help

I just got all the DVD's for a lot of money, but I can not play any of them on my MAC book.(I think that is because they were burned on zone 1 dvd's and my lap top works with zone 2.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.
