Ripping into Itunes vs WMP

Hi - first post. Please can you help me. I recently installed Itunes because I prefer it to Windows Media Player. I had a few albums which I hadn't yet ripped so I did this in Itunes. Question: Is there any difference in ripping into Itunes vs WMP? The reason I ask is that I have a 4gb memory stick for my car. Now - files copied to this which were ripped into WMP play fine - files copied which were ripped into Itunes do not. Is there something i'm not doing right? Or do i really have to re-rip them again using WMP, I hope not!

It's possible your car player doesn't do Apple's AAC but will do wma and mp3.
How have you set iTunes to rip the albums ?

  • CDs Are Rejected When Ripped Into iTunes

Why do music CDs get rejected when I rip into iTunes. Under Import Settings, I turned off "Use error correctioin when reading Audio CDs", which helped with some CDs. I also cleaned each rejected CD with soap and water.... what else can I try?

There are various reasons some CDs don't rip, but the potential solutions are:
    1.  Rip the CD with another program on the same CD, such as Windows Media Player, and add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.
    2.  Rip the CD on another computer and bring the MP3s across on a flash drive.
    3.  Use a more powerful rippping program, such as AudioGrabber or dbPowerAmp.
(#2 helped me recently.  I had a Warner Brothers CD that bombed in Win 7 but ripped fine with iTunes on a Mac.)

  • Re-ripping into iTunes

I have a large library in iTunes, and I have all the info exactly like I want it (genres, track titles, comments, ratings, artwork, etc. I'm very picky.) I originally encoded all the music as mp3 (with iTunes), but want to bring it all in again as aac. If I reinsert the CDs, is there a way to replace all the mp3 files with aac without having to retype anything on those files?

Maybe I can explain one more time to see what is different between what you have done and what I did. Maybe then I can see the issue.
I had iTunes set to handle inserted CDs to automatically import and then eject the CD. I put in a disc, it would grab the info from Gracenote, put the mp3s into my library (with whatever info Gracenote had), and kick the disc out. After I imported all the discs, I went into my library and cleaned up the info from Gracenote because I didn't like the track titles, artist, album, or the genre it put things into, etc. For example, for operas Gracenote would have "such-and-such opera disc 1" and I got rid of the disc number in the title and would renumber tracks in my library so all the discs were in order.
I now want to replace all these mp3s with aac files. If I set iTunes to automatically import and eject the CD, I get a second set of all the songs with Gracenote's information. If I tell it not to do anything on disc insert, I can double-click on the little CD icon to open up a window showing the CD with the information from Gracenote. None of this information matches the info I have in my iTunes library. On this screen (where I'm looking at the CD info), I can do a "get info" to change things, and have changed the artist and album info to match what I have in my iTunes library. When I then click to import, it will still import duplicate files. Of course the album and artist info is correct (because I just typed it that way), but the track titles, genre, etc. aren't reset. This is an issue because the big pain was typing the track titles the way I want them (I have lots of classical and opera, with foreign characters, etc. and the info in Gracenote tends to be sloppy).
It seems that if I had changed the info on the screen showing the CD before the first import, and then popped in that disc again, all the info would be retained (this I've tested). But if a disc was used to create a certain set of files in the library, and then I manipulated the info in the library, when I reinsert the CD it isn't smart enough to remember that disc x was used to create library files a-n, which I've now renamed, etc.
Thoughts? Have you been in the habit of changing the CD info on the CD screen before the first import? That may be why you are being given the option to reimport and I am not.

  • CD errors occur ripping into iTunes

with error correction, apple lossless.  Skips and pops with cds in good condition.  Using apple superdrive which I thought was the problem, but now wonder if it is software.  Do I need a new disc drive, or is there better software that will allow use with itunes/iphone?  Thanks for any help.

iTunes' organization creates a structure of:
    - Artist Folder
    --- Album Folder
    ----- Music File
There is an Album folder that contains that Album's tracks. They are all organized by Artist (except Compilations).
I do not believe that you can change this methodology. You can always prevent iTunes from organizing your Library when 'Adding' a folder.
Delete the Library references, rearrange the folders as you desire and 'Add' the main music folder back into the Library.
As most people using iTunes do not need to view/use/manage the music externally, why not just let iTunes organize your music and view it within iTunes?

The only music I'm able to sync is what I've purchased.  Otherwise when I connect my iPhone to my computer via USB it asks if I want to set up a new phone or if I want to restore.  Help!

I can't.  When I sync it, it brings me to a screen in iTunes that says do you want to start new device or restore?  Am I syncing wrong?

  • Help Loading CDs into Itunes 11

I recently upgraded Itunes to 11 and lost a portion of my library.  I am reloading the CDs and have hit a snag.  I can only load 1 CD then it will not load any more.  I have closed and reopened Itunes without luck.  I reboot and I can get 1 CD in but that is it.  I can see the CD on My Computer and play it through there but can't get Itunes to download after one.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

I'm having a similar problem. With a number of regular store bought music CDs that I have tried to play with and rip into iTunes, the CD has "stalled", I guess - basically the program freezes, and then the only way that I can stop iTunes is by Force Quitting. The specific behavior of the CD drive is that it will speed up and apparently scan the CD for approximately 3 seconds and then slow down (maybe stop) for about 2 seconds, and repeat this in cycles apparently endlessly unless I Force Quit or shut down. When I use Force Quit, it indicates that iTunes is not responding. A few times that it's done this I've let it go for 10 or 12 minutes and it just continues to stall with no change. I've tried pressing the computer eject button and holding it, pausing, skipping tracks, and using a "Skip Doctor" CD repair tool to fix the CDs that I've had the problem with - nothing has worked. 2 or 3 I've hit all kinds of buttons trying to get a response, and I've come back to the computer 5 or 10 minutes later and the CD has finally paused or ejected. What has me so perplexed about this issue is that (a) I take very good care of my CDs for the most part, and (b) this is a brand new MacBook Pro, which I've also taken good care of. My mother's '98 Pontiac minivan was playing these CDs fine last summer. They played fine in my Dell that I got in 2000. I recall that these places on the CDs that it's stalling at are places where I've heard the CD skip in the past, but I've never had this problem with the CD stalling and causing the device that's playing it to become unresponsive. I can't think of anything that I've done to the CD drive or any other part of the computer that would have caused this. Please let me know what you think I might try to resolve this. Thanks.

  • I have ripped all of my Cds into iTune, now I cannot find where some of the artists have been filled, not all the artists are listed, yet others are listed multiple times as they play with other groups. How do I list all one artist under his name? I know

Sorry this will appear pretty basic stuff.  I have ripped all my Cds into iTunes, but in starting to make playlists it is apparent that some artists are listed multiple times as they appear with different bands, and others do not appear at all.  I have tried searching different categories, compilations etc, and Finder box does not bring them up.
    My questions are:-
Do I need additional software to manipulate my tunes in iTunes?
    If so what is suggested?
    or if not:-
How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?
How do I make my "lost" artists tunes appear?
    Thanks for any advice.

I am not really following what the problem is here.  Artists are listed in the Artist field.  I guess you could stick individual artists in a band in a field such as comments, but then you would have to include searching the comments field in your search.  In which fields are these names located?
How are you making these playlists? Are these smart playlists or are you just dragging tracks to a playlist?
Are you doing this search with Finder's find or with iTunes' search?
If I knew exactly what it was you were trying to do I could tell you if you need addditional software.  In reality though there isn't "additional software" for iTunes.  There's Applescript plugins but I don't see how the ones with which I am familiar would have anything to do with searching for artist names.
How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.

  • How to rip CDs into iTunes from several machines, simultaneously

I have about 300 CDs that I'm re-ripping into my library for two reasons (1) I had a hard drive failure that corrupted / lost some of the files and (2) I'm shifting from MP3 to Apple Lossless format.
Setup: MacMini is linked to entertainment center for iTunes playback but I ahve 2 other Macbooks on network. iTunes library is on an external hardrive connected to mini via firewire --accessible to macbooks via network.
Issue 1: Can I load the iTunes library from the external hard drive on each of the three machines, then have each of the three re-rip CDs simultaneously to overwrite the old files? After the CDs have been re-ripped, I'd just tell iTunes on the MacMini rebuild the library so that it knew the actual file types for the CDs imported by the macbooks.
Issue 2: I want to overwrite existing songs (1) to avoid duplicate files and (2) I've misplaced / stored a couple hundred other CD's, so I can't just erase the old library, rip from three machines, then import into the mini b/c that would be a large loss of CDs.
My plan would as follows, but I'm not certain if it will work or if it's the best way:
    1. Erase the iTunes library (not the files) on all three machines for a clean start.
    2. On Each machine, Preferences -> Advanced -> General: Set the iTunes music folder to the external drive where the current music files are located. Also set each computer to "Keep Music Folder Organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder..."
    3. on Each machine, select File -> Add to Libary: to add all of the current music files.
    4. Start simultaneously shoving my CDs into the three machines and re-importing using lossless / telling it to overwrite existing files when prompted.
    5. When done re-importing the CDs, erase the macbook libraries (I don't listen to music on them), tell the mac mini to erase it's library, then re-add all the newly ripped files and the preexisting/not-overwritten files to the library to rebuild it, so that the mini becomes aware of the files that were added / rewritten by the other two machines.
While none of the three machines would be ripping the same CD or trying to overwrite the same music files at the same time, my concern is that all three machines would run into problems if trying to update / write to the same iTunes non-music file, for example the iTunes Libarary Database file of the iTunes Library.xml file on the external drive.
    Comments? Suggestions? Experiences?
    Thanks,

Well, yeah, this wold work, in 1/3 the time. If you have changed ANYTHING about a song title, album title or artist, iTunes will not see it as a duplicate.
Issue 2: I want to overwrite existing songs (1) to avoid duplicate files and (2) I've misplaced / stored a couple hundred other CD's, so I can't just erase the old library, rip from three machines, then import into the mini b/c that would be a large loss of CDs.

    1. Erase the iTunes library (not the files) on all three machines for a clean start.
Right Click/Duplicate first, just in case. OR (better method) hold the Option key while opening iTunes and choose create new library.
    2. On Each machine, Preferences -> Advanced -> General: Set the iTunes music folder to the external drive where the current music files are located. Also set each computer to "Keep Music Folder Organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder..."

On the three machines, hold the Option Key while opening iTunes and choose the original library, then delete the new library file you created for this adventure. Then do the same to create a new library on the MacMini. If you have created playlists, first export each playlist as a .xml file and import it when finished.
While none of the three machines would be ripping the same CD or trying to overwrite the same music files at the same time, my concern is that all three machines would run into problems if trying to update / write to the same iTunes non-music file, for example the iTunes Libarary Database file of the iTunes Library.xml file on the external drive.
They will each be creating their own unique library database, missing what the other two machines are adding to the iTunes Music Folder. They will not be re-writing the .xml file on the external hard drive. Each computer will have it's own .xml file on it's hard drive.

  • Which software will allow yout to rip dvd's into itunes and playback?

I am interested in ripping my dvd collection into itunes and having ability to playback via apple tv.
    Please advise.
    dell   Windows XP Pro

I don't understand the snobbery attached to paying a few dollars for a piece of software when all of us spend thousands on equipment.
All the mentioned software is available for download and tryout, if you like you buy - simple!
For me "DVD to AppleTV Converter" runs incredibly slow on my Quad as it doesn't support multi-processing, so no good. I have no idea of the quality of it's conversions because I binned it as soon as I realised this flaw and wasn't prepared to pay for a product that failed to utilise the power of my machine.
"VisualHub" however is amazing. The quality is great, and it's fast - maxing out all four processors, so I have no problem shelling out a few quid for it.
"Mediafork" is another great utility, and has the advantage of being able to rip straight from a dvd, and the quality is great.

    Hi, BartleyBauer.
If the media that you are attempting to sync plays in iTunes, try removing the preference to sync music as this remove the media from the device.  Once this is done, try syncing the media again.

  • Ripping Music CDs into iTunes

When ripping music CDs into iTunes, the tracks are occasionally saved into separate albums.… how do I avoid this? I want them in one album as they were on the CD so that I can play the music by clicking only one album.

The Gracenote database sometimes has entries that list a track via a different artist, usually when there's a guest artist on the track and so whoever uploaded the track data listed the artist as something like "Joe Smith featuring Fred Mertz". For instructions on correcting this, see:

  • Can I rip a DVD and import it into iTunes?

Can you import movies into iTunes from a DVD, like you can music from a CD?

If you are talking about commercial DVDs, we can't help you here. Commercial DVDs are encrypted. In order to copy the DVD, you'd need to break that encryption which is illegal in the U.S. (and, I think, in Canada). Because it's illegal, the terms of use of this forum prohibits discussion of software or methods.
    Sorry.

  • I'm using Windows 8.  I have 2 folders in my videos library - movies and personal videos.  When I try to import a movie into iTunes, it puts it in the Home Video section and if I import a personal video, it puts it into the home video section.  what up?

Im using Win8.  I originally had all my ripped movies in a movie folder listed in the videos library.  This imported into iTunes movies with no issue.  I later added a second folder t my library - personal videos where i put all my home videos.  I was able to import this into iTunes and it showed up in "Home Movies" - very cool and exactly what I wanted.  Now, if I add a new ripped movie and put it in my movie librairy and try to import it into iTunes, it places it in Home Movies.  And if I put a new personal video, it will also import into iTunes under 'Home Video?.  What is going on here??  Any help would be greatly appreciated - it seems like this is a bug in iTunes 11.

I thank you for the response.  Apple does some assinine things sometimes and this is one of them.  Ask the planet the difference between a movie and a home video and with the exception of Apple, you'd get 100% consenus on the what difference is.  A home video is something that I shoot, like my kids birthday party.  A movie is something I urchased either via download or a DVD that I ripped.  Unbelievable!   The fact that Apple has chosen not to distinguish based upon which folder I tell it is Movies and which folder is Home Videos is really hard to fathom - sounds like something Windows would do. I find it funny that in my iTunes movies sub-section of the movies section, the movie icons have a cloud icon in upper right corner to distinguish it as bought from Apple iTunes versus no cloud icon for movies that I have ripped - so the distintion was already made and clearly visible.  Now - everything just defaults to "home videos" if I try to import a new ripped DVD - why even bother to have this distinction on the iTunes bar?  WOW!
As for your direction, I do not understand what you are telling me - what Media Kind and what Options tab are you referring to?  I see no Options tab in iTunes.  Right licking on the movie icon does not yield media kind or options as well.  Gping to the source file does not yield these options either.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise.

I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise. I have seen lots of old posts which go on about converting files but am wondering wherher at the current time with the latest versions of itunes and apple tv whether this should by now be a virtual play out of the box solution.
I have tried connecting my atv to the amp by optical cable but that didnt produce anything better and am assuming that a hdmi cable should be able to reproduce everything an optical cable does.
Is this something I should be able to achieve without having to recode the files?
Tracks are imported to itunes as apple lossless, have tried setting the atv audio settings to auto and 16 bit, neither works yet I was told some time ago by an apple rep that the atv shoud be able to handle any type of audio as it just passes it to the amp to decode. I am not stupid but not that technical when it comes to audio and bitrates etc so any explaination would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.
    Steven
