Ripping music from a dvd

Hello, I am a new member who is desperate for advice. How can I rip the sound from a DVD. I need some music for a dance school show, and it is only available as part of a DVD soundtrack....?

The dance school pays PPL and PRS licences which enable it to use any music in dance school productions, provided the correct information is given to both of these organisations so that they can allocate fees accordingly.
The use of the music and the legality of taking it from the DVD is not an issue (these are not for profit performances). My problem is the physical act of how I get the music.
I could play the DVD on a DVD player and try to make the room as quiet as possible then record the sound track through GarageBand - but that is a little '1970's', don't you think!!!!
'Handbrake' sounds interesting - what is it, how/where do I get it, and how do I use it?
(I am a novice - will it be easy to use?)

  • Ripping audio from a DVD - Any ideas for Macs

    Hi
I found a nice and simple piece of software from www.imtoo.com which can rip the audio out of a DVD and save it as an audio file for import to iPod. For a whole bunhc of reasons I'd rather have just the audio from films and comedy shows than the whole video.
Oddly this was listed in MacWorld, but they don't do an Apple Mac version. I am after a one stop solution if anyone knows of one - guess there must be as the IMTOO product works so elegantly, am sure someone has done this for the Mac.
    Cheers
    Sammy

I am not aware of any tool for the Mac that can rip audio from a DVD-A (audio only) disk.
I am also not aware of any 1 step tool for ripping the audio from ordinary DVD video disks.
The approach I took when I did this involved using MacTheRipper to copy to a hard disk, another tool to extract the audio, and then if I remember correctly, I used QuickTime to save the tracks as individual files (with the correct track lengths are listed on the cover). I was then able to burn the results files to a CD (audio format), and incredibly the resulting CD was recognised by iTunes (and Gracenote CDDB) with the correct tracks names etc. (The DVD was of a concert.)
This as you can tell was not a simple one step operation, it took most of an afternoon trying various tools.

    Hi,
The simplest solution would to restore from your back up - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
If you do not have a back, you can select first track on list in song view, from menu > edit > select all. Next ctrl+click and select download from pop up. You may wish to do this in small batches as it will take some time to download.

  • Ripping Audio from a DVD to iTunes

Does anyone know a simple way to rip the audio from a DVD to an mp3 for use in iTunes? I have some stand-up DVD's that i would like to listen to when I want.

You have to extract/demux the audio portion from DVDs using a tool like MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
As most commercial DVDs come CSS encrypted in this case you have to use a so called Ripper to copy the DVD's content first to your HD.

  • Importing music from data DVD

In an effort to transfer music from my old PC to my new iMac, I burnt 2GB of music onto a DVD. Whenever I insert this DVD into the iMac (the 24" model), I'm told I've inserted a blank CD... is there a setting I am supposed to change somewhere?

    Some things to check:
On the PC, make sure you "finalized" the disk and did did not leave it appendable. Eg. if you're using Roxio Creater Plus you actually have to tell the program to finalize the disk in a separate step after burning.
Verify that the DVD is readable by a PC, it is possible that it did not burn correctly.
Can your iMac read other DVDs?
    Hope this helps.

Hi, I recently bought a new computer with vista 64 bit. Is there a way to take music from my ipod touch to computer running vista.

  • Ripping audio from a DVD

I have a DVD produced by a friend that has a great speaker on it. I would like to rip the audio so that I can also listen to it on my iPod. Is this possible with Garage Band?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
(You can't do it in GB.) When you load the DVD into your computer, what form is it in, meaning what form are the files in?
    Are they audio files?
If so, you can copy them to your computer, then drag them into iTunes, and take it from there.

  • HT1351 Is ripped music from a CD or downloaded for free legitimately from the artist no longer playable on iphones/pads/pods?

When syncing my Iphone it appears that any music that I ripped from a CD or downloaded from the artists's website is now unplayable on my iphone.  Did Apple change their policies so that I can no longer listen to it from my phone?  I can still listen to it in Itunes.  Thanks

Okay, can someone please give a useful answer? Thanks! I have been experiencing exactly the same problem for some time now, and it is very annoying. Furthermore, I would like to point out to Chris CA that there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the original post.
So here is the deal. I used to be able to burn CDs with iTunes that played back fine on both my car and home stereo. After some update, and I am very sorry but I really do not remember which one, as I am just a user and not a programmer and just want something that works, which in the end Apple used to be all about, and therefore do not keep track of all the updates, CDs won't play back on my car stereo. Nothing else changed, still the same brand of CDs (even the same stack!), still the same car stereo, and still the same 2007 MBP. So by simple deduction I conclude it must be a software update. And I do not care what the exact cause is, I just want a fix!
I'd like to apologize for my tone in the above, but it is just a very annoying problem, even more so because it seems nothing is being done about it. Thanks for your answer in advance!

Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to your results.
A just in case mention when you are working with one DVD disc after another....
In the Video Importer, you designate a Save In location for the copies(ripped) DVD-VIDEO video files (vob). Each of your DVD disc will use
the same name for its files....so disc 1 will start with the specifically named VTS_01_1.VOB as will all subsequent DVD discs. When you get to the
second DVD disc and are in the Video Importer with the same Save In location, you are going to get a message that the files have already been imported
when they have not for this second disc.
What you were doing in that case was trying to save a file with the same name to the same place.
Solution is to plan vob save stragegy
    a. Setting a new save location for each DVD
    or
    b. Moving the vob from Disc 1 to another save location
    or
    c. Other
Any questions about this please let me know.
    Thank you.

  • UP-LOADING PHOTOS & RIPPED MUSIC FROM IPHONE BACK TO COMPUTER

My computer crashed and I lost everything, but thankfully my iPhone has all the photo's and music albums stored on file. The problem is, I can't find a way of re-installing that data back onto my computer! I have managed to re-install music I purchased on the Apple site, but there is no facility available that I can locate that allows my photo's and ripped albums to be re-installed back onto the computer.
    Please help!

That's because Apple makes no provision to do what you want. It's expected that you maintain a backup of your music, photos, and other data. The iphone is not a backup device. You can recover this data, but you will have to use third party software to do so. Bear in mind, photos synced to your phone were reduced in resolution for display on the iphones screen. There is no way to recover their original resolution if you did not make a backup of your computers data.

  • Installing (ripping) iPhoto from Tiger DVD

Is it possible to install iPhoto from the Tiger Upgrade DVD? I removed iPhoto and now I need to re-install it. I don't want to waster $79.00 for iLife programs I won't use.
    20 IMac, G5, 1.8Ghz, 160HD, 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

It is possible. Install the bundled appplications but select the Custom install and untick everything but iPhoto. I would suggest you double-check before pressing "Continue".

  • Is it me or is my itunes not ripping music from any kind of cd?

I had saved all my mp3 music before my old computer crashed on a CD-R disc. I have many songs on it but itunes is not importing the music. I have them saved on my new comp. and I can open and play the music. But I cannot synch them onto my ipod because clearly my music is not imported into the itunes software. The music is there but it is not uploading to my ipod for lack of better words and of course not saving on itunes. HEeeelllpp! getting frustrating I have really nice songs on there better than American Idol far better. By the way I am currently a Windowsvista user.

Have you tried using the 'add folder to iTunes' option under the file menu? The files have to be in iTunes before going to iPod so that is the first step.
