Ripping music tracks from CDs

What file type, bit rate, etc. should I use when ripping CDs to a hard drive? I am planning eventually to serve the songs files for listening via a Sonos device and hope to preserve the best possible sound quality. Thanks!

For low end medium quality mp3 format (128k, or what is often compared to FM radio) it's about 1 MB per minute play time. For Apple's music from the iTunes Store it's about double that. For uncompressed it's about 10x that. For lossless compressed it's about 6x that, so about 6 MB per minute (actual compression depends upon the audio characteristics of the music).

Ripping lengthy tracks from CDs - skipping?

I'm still using iTunes 8.2, but anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem. When ripping tracks from a CD that are nearly 30 minutes long or sometimes 74 minutes long (Steve Roach fan, heh), sometimes the tracks play back with that weird digital squelching, or skipping sound.
Could just be that my CD is dirty because I've had similar issues on normal-length tracks with very dirty CDs.
But just curious...?
My workaround is tedious, but I'll import 20+ minutes at a time AIFF format, then reassemble in GarageBand, then export as AAC. Things work fine then.

If you haven't already, turn on error correction in your Import Settings. It slows the rip process down, but can compensate (to a degree) for dirty or scratched CDs.

Will icloud be useful when I have music loaded from CDs

I have an imac and 2 ipads and an ipod. With all these devices I still find that I cant use icloud to sync my music. Reason - my music is from CDs purchased or made by converting a lot of recordings. Rare ones. How can I make my itunes library from my mac be available to all the other devices?

Music is not stored in iCloud.
You can use iTunes Match ($20 per year) to share your library.

Trying to separate music track from audio track

Hi all - I've been reading posts, but haven't been able to determine whether there is a way for me to separate a music track from an audio track.
I have a copy of a television show that aired, where the music and audio tracks have (obviously) been mastered to the point where it's one music channel.
I'm trying to extend the music a little further without including the people talking. Does anyone know any creative methods that would allow me to do this?

No...not at a professional quality level. You would need to either collect enough of the music bed where no dialog or f/x are present or obtain the oringal source music - which could be anything from readily accessible library or commercial to no longer existant custom music.
Sorry...I know that isn't much help.
From a Non-Pro level...there are really only two tricks:
1) If there is enough contrast between music and everything else...about all you could do would be to EQ out the ranges where dialog exist. 300hz - 4Khz maybe. But that is also where the definition is going to be in the music.
2) If the music is in stereo and the dialog is not. You can try to elimate the dialog by inverting the phase of one channel and monoing the two togther. This will leave you with only L-R material. Again, not good enough for professional broadcast...but you can try it.

I deleted music from my library expecting it to now be available in the cloud.
When I search in purchased items in iTunes and click on the item, it tells me that the original file is no longer available.
I am not expecting the file to be available just the music track/album etc.

Uploading music tracks from Creative Zen Micro to

Hi,
You could transfer the music content of your Zen Micro to your Zen V Plus without transferring it to the PC first. Do the following steps:
. Connect one player at a time in your PC (XP O/S) and make sure that both of the player is detected.
2. If Windows have detected it, click on the option Open to View Files.
3. Open up the Music folder of both players.
4. From there, copy and paste whatever music tracks you would like to transfer from Zen Micro to Zen V Plus.
It's a good idea to have a back up of all your data and you could use a USB Flash dri've to store it all.

HT1351 Music imported from CDs will not synch to my iphone or ipad - even though it's ticked and set up correctly. Looking at other posts this seems ot have been an issue for ages. The latest itunes software update hasn't fixed it

This has now been ongoing for over a month - the lastest software release hasn't fixed it.
I can import music from CDs - the tracks are ticked for synching and all the associated rigmarole is correct.
Problem is when I synch, apps go across but imported music doesn't. It just gets to step 5 - waiting for changes to be applied - and then does nothing until it eventually finishes synching but no music has come across.
Same issue on my iphone.
I have looked at some solutions on forums but they seem complicated and I don't understand why apple haven't yet fixed this (or why you can't contact them). Seems a basic fundamental service that they are not supplying.
Having spoken to people in the family, its seems I'm not laone with this problem (unless you have a mac......)

I had this same problem with my new MBP 15", but only with the USB port on the left side. The USB port on the right side worked fine. Perhaps the ports on the left don't have enough signal energy for the iPhone.
Anyway, try using a different USB port, and if that doesn't work, perhaps you could try a powered USB hub.

HT4527 Will home sharing allow me to share music downloaded from cds?

At least 75% of my itunes library has been downloaded from my cd collection(approx 400-500 cds). How do I share this between multiplecomputers(I have a laptop and a desktop with a third laptop potentially on the way). I knwo I can share music downloaded from itunes but can;t figure out how to share the music from the CDs.

IPhone won't play music imported from CDs or mp3s not downloaded from itunes

When I first downloaded iOS 7, all of the music I had in my iTunes synched to my iPhone, but now new CDs I just imported and previous songs I imported from CDs won't synch (I've tried over wifi and usb). When I click on songs on my phone that were from CDs, they look as if they are going to play and then skip immediately. Mp3s I downloaded do the same thing. Mind you, everything was working fine until updating to iOS 7.0.4. I've been looking around the forums and have found that problems like this are relatively common and it's a shame Apple hasn't done anything to fix it.
When my phone is hooked up and I click on "on this iPhone", it says the music from CDs and mp3s is on, but the titles come up gray with these litte circle things next to them
Just checking now, I noticed some songs I bought from iTunes are doing the same thing.
I tried manually synching, but when I click to drag the songs into my phone, the section that has music, movies, etc. just flashes and nothing happens. I know something is wrong because I just put a ringtone onto my phone the same way.
Oh, I also noticed that when my iPhone is synching and the steps go through at the top it skips steps 3, 4, and sometimes 5 (The Apple symbol pops up instead then goes straight to 6 and 7) so I know it's not recognizing the fact I put a bunch of new music in iTunes. Also, when I look at the bar at the bottom that shows how much memory is on my phone, this shows up:
and that Documents and Data thing was not there before.
Can someone please give me ideas on how I can stop this rediculousness without buying a new phone?

CTplay2 has performed an illegal operation when trying to rip a track from a cd into Playcent

I have had Creative Playcenter for about three years with no problems until a week ago.
I was surfing the Internet and while on one webpage, I had the Playcenter
playing a playlist, the computer locked up after I tried to close a pop up ad. After rebooting, the Playcenter lost the list of tracks, it had the albums and artist lists, yet the track list showed "0". I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and reloaded
the tracks from the Nomad and now I am unable to rip tracks from cd's. I am able to convert existing wave files ripped from other cd ripping software yet cannot use the Creative Playcenter rip and convert feature without encountering this illegal operation message then it shuts it down. It's able to create the file where the mp3's are stored, but unable to tranfer the MP3 to it. No other changes have been made to my computer either. I just hope that I do not have to do a dreaded format and reinstall to fix this.
I really like this Creative product since I have had it have not had any problems with either the Nomad Jukebox or the software until the Internet surfing incident about a week ago

This error occurs when I try to rip a cd track into the Play Center. I have tried to repair from the disc with the anti virus disabled and while reinstalling another error message appears "scandir has caused an illegal operation" during the reinstall.

The original version that came with the installation disc "3.02.58". I have not updated it since I installed the first time because I had not had any problems with it until recently.
Also I forgot to mention in my first post, I have added some extra system sounds to my computer and that may have contributed to the problem of it freezing up at the time I clicked on the pop up ad in order to close it out. Some of the sounds activate during "restore up" and "minimize", the sounds or other Windows sounds do not activate while Playcenter is in use.

Missing link between Itunes and Music Loaded from CDs

Somehow itunes no longer recognizes the link between itunes and music loaded from my Cds (error message in itunes indicates original file could not be found). I can establish this link manually one by one and the songs play but how can I establish this link other than manually one by one in itunes ?

     I saved the last message by accident which caused the reply to be sent off and so I had not finished what I wanted to write. Aploogies.
     I didn't find the new iMac hybrid SSD/Disk system easy to understand when it arrived over a year ago. I eventually decided that the 256 SSD section would be best suited to having the Operatin System for greater speed and I must have decided to put the music files on the 1TB internal hard drive along with photos and raw video clips. I can't honestly remember. There was a lot to take in. I wasn't even aware until this failure that iTunes had a default location.
     In addition to having the iTunes folder on the internal 1TB hard drive, I used Time Machine to store the entire computer contents on a 1TB Western Digital external hard drive. I had done my last Time Machine back-up on the 13 February and so I was hoping that by opening one or two songs on the back-up, they might reactivate the 'old' interface with the original playlists on it. That didn't happen but I then realised, while I was still in the Tme Machine back-ups on the WD external hard drive, that in the iTunes Media folder contained within the iTunes folder on the default Users/Username/Music location there was only an Add automatically to iTunes folder which was empty. While still still looking through the Time Machine back-upsI saw that the music instead was stored on the 1TB of internal hard drive as outlined on the first post:
     'The music files are located in folders (name of artists), within a folder (iTunes Music), within a folder (iTunes), within a folder (Music), within a folder (username) on the 1TB of internal disk drive.'
   The iTunes.itl file was last modified on Monday at 21:52. Created on 17th February, 2012. Size 386KB

Extra music tracks from ITunes

Hi, Not sure if this is the right place for this post....
I have successfully made a few AVs via Iphoto / Itunes burned via Idvd, now i am wondering if its possible to get two tracks or more of music from in ITunes instead of one track so my AVs last longer as i do mine to 'Fit slideshow to music' all i would like to do is add 2 or more tracks instead of one.

Yes, you can add more songs your slideshow.
If you plan on using music purchased from iTunes, you should take these preliminary steps to avoid potential issues with the DRM protection.
1. Burn the music in question to a CD.
2. Reimport the music as an AIFF file. iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import using: (drop down menu) AIFF encoder
3. This music can now be imported into your project.
Once you have your newly imported music, create a playlist of those songs in iTunes. Open the slideshow in iPhoto; click on "Music". Select _only the playlist_, not the song titles themselves.

I'm using OSX 10.9 Mavericks with iTunes 11.1.3 (8) 64 bits and I can't sync it with my iPhone 4 (iOS 7.0.4)
What I should to do to put some music on my iPhone?
When I try to sync some tracks from my macbook to my iphone, iTunes starts showing that are backing up, etc, but at some point it shows the message "canceling sync" and never leaves it. Only closing iTunes and starting all over again, but falling into the same problem.
There are a lot of days that I have this issue.

Are you getting any error messages? Have you used these devices previously with another computer? Please describe what exactly are you doing to "move" files to your devices.
