Ripping my own DVD to edit in Premiere
A number of years ago I created a DVD of old family movies and showed it at a family Christmas party. I then recorded everyone's commentary as they watched, and intended to marry the two in Premiere and then burn multiple copies for all my family members. Before I could that, my hard drive crashed and I wasnt able to recover the files. Now I have found a back up DVD that I burned, and I want to import all of the DVD into Premiere so I can add the commentary track, that is still on a HD tape, and then burn multiple copies for everyone. How do I rip the DVD and import it so I can do this? Thanks!
Now I have found a back up DVD that I burned, and I want to import all of the DVD into Premiere
Just for clarification, this "back up DVD," is the DVD-Video that you played on the set-top player, so that your family could comment. Is that correct. I just want to make sure that this is the DVD-Video, and not another DVD-Data disc, that was used for some sort of backup.
If that is the DVD-Video, how did you create it? This might affect how well CS4.1, or CS4.2 can Import from it. Ann is correct that those versions of PrPro can work directly with 100% DVD-compliant DVD-Video .VOB's. If you use PrPro and Encore to create it, you should be "home free," as it will be so very simple - copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the disc and then Import the VOB's contained within - done! Ann has covered this, and I hope that it is the case, 'cause things will be very easy.
If, OTOH, you used a DVR, or maybe some other software to create this DVD-Video, then it might be a bit more involved, depending on how completely that method adhered to the DVD-specs. Some do just fine, but some play very fast and loose with those specs., and you might need other steps to get that material into PrPro.
If your case is the latter, then we'll be able to give you the necessary steps to still get the job done, and offer you some options on how to do it best. As these can be involved, I'll wait to hear back from you.
Here's hoping that your DVD-Video (if that's what it is) is 100% DVD-compliant.
Good luck,

MOV to DVD editing in premiere and encore
Hi.. Sometime ago I bought a digital still camera which can also shoot 640x480 30fps quicktime mov files.
To edit,combine and share the videos I am planning to write them in dvd with premiere pro cs3 and encore cs3. Although I have learned some about these programs I dont know some important preferences of exporting.
Could someone please answer these questions so I know what I am doing...
1. When starting a new project or exporting to encore to make mpeg-2 DVD what should I select in field order...Lower, upper or no fields (progressive scan)?
2. Likewise is my source video coming from camera as quicktime mov interlaced or non-interlaced? If it is non-interlaced it would be ridiculous to de-interlace, right? Although I used gspot to understand that I couldnt get any information about that issue
3. When I compare my source movie and output DVD I find that quicktime movie is a little bit sharper than DVD output in my computer. Is this normal or should I sharpen it a little in premiere pro before outputting to encore?
4. As I can edit in premiere and export as mpeg-2 I dont need any other quicktime codec, do I?
This is the result I got from gspot

Thanks for the replies.Your camera is not suited for video editing. Either use a proper video camera or use a different application.
1. Lower.
2. Depends on your camera.
3. Likely to happen. GIGO, garbage in, garbage out.
4. No. -
I transfered my home video VHS tape to a DVD a few years ago. What can I use to transfer that DVD onto the computer, in a format so I can edit it in Final Cut Express? Obviously I don't care about copy protection, because it's my own DVD.
One solution is to connect a DV camcorder to the DVD player and make a copy to tape, then capture to FCE with a firewire cable.
FYI: Most cameras have Pass Through ability and you can avoid the capture to tape if you want. Use the FCE Easy Setup > DV Converter in this case. Make sure you select the correct video standard, PAL or NTSC.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to rip a dvd and edit its content using imovie. I tried handbrake but the quality is poor and took forever, plus it never made it to editing. I have done it successfully on a pc with dvd shrink and nero. I was wondering if someone could tell me what way is best for getting the content in imovie without sacrificing quality. Is there a solution or a website that I can learn this stuff from? These dvds are not copyright protected. With dvd shrink the files were iso files. Is imovie capable of reading these? What is the best way and can it be done on a mac?
welcome Wally to the board
offers the following options:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k
* connect your Camera to a DVD-player and copy to tape/use as converter
none of these techniques override copy protection! -
Importing Video from DVD to Edit in iMovie?
I need to import video from a DVD to edit in iMovie. What's the best way to go about this?
Thanks,
Ted
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.6) Also own an iBook, G3 500mhz, 10gb driveDVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

DVD burning error in Premiere Elements 11
I recently filmed a friend's memorial service for their family. I have footage from two different cameras that I have edited in Premiere Elements 11, for the purpose of making a DVD of the service.
I run into a problem when I try to burn the project to a DVD. The burn goes a short distance (at most 5%) then pops an error that reads:
internal software error:.\win\Primo\primo_command.cpp, line 124
I have tried making sure that all other programs are shut down (to the best of my ability - antivirus won't completely shut down, but can be put into a mode where it won't do any background activity). I've rendered the project into AVI and loaded the AVI file into the timeline. No matter what, I keep getting shut down at that same point. When it occurs, my DVD drive disappears from the machine and I have to restart the machine to get the drive back.
I've checked and I have the most current firmware for the drive. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium on a Dell laptop.
Does anyone have any ideas what this error message means and how to correct this? The service was about a month ago and I'd really like to get this finished up and handed off to the family.Yoofdursh
Thank you for your helpful information.
If you have the burn to folder feature working then you can get this immediate project done and then work out the burn to disc problem.
This is the solution to get your DVD-VIDEO Standard on DVD disc with what you have working at the present time...
Publish+Share
Disc
DVD
and in the burn to: select Folder (4.7 GB) and designate a save location for it.
Download and install the free ImgBurn software and use that to take the VIDEO_TS Folder in the burn to folder to a DVD disc in DVD-VIDEO format (with required disc File System). The following is a popular online how to.
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/burn_dvd_folder_imgburn.cfm
The link for the download should be included in this above link.
Basically
1. Open ImgBurn and click on "Write files/folder to disc".
2. In the dialog that opens, select File Menu/Browse for a source folder. Navigate to the VIDEO_TS Folder (only it), select it, then hit Select Folder to enter it into the program.
3. Then hit the Build button at the bottom of the dialog.
There are settings that you can look through. But, the program takes over and does the essentials for you, offering messages at times as it directs you through its program.
This will work great for you to get you through your project which you want to get out sooner rather than later.
Please let me know if you see any problems with this plan.
While you are doing that I will see what I can find about this Primo Software program which you say you do not have.
Thanks.

Which of these laptops to buy for editing with premiere pro
Hello guys,
I am looking for a new laptop to replace my dead beloved desktop L
I will be editing mainly with Adobe Premiere CS6 and After Effects CS6 and do some graphic works (PS,ILL…)
After a long research the choice was narrowed to the options mentioned bellow. Which one do you recommend ? Is there any other option in the same price range that I did not consider?
P.S. Please pay attention to the Hard disk variations!!! Would that make a great difference in editing?
Thank you in advance J

The biggest problem with the Asus in question is that it will be really hard to upgrade it and I still did not find a model with SSD.
I found a comparision review here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-N550JV-CN201H-Notebook.98311. 0.html
The Asus scores better in the cinebench sector (slightly with OpenGL and much with CPU) and the Lenovo is better in the Pcmark7 and the 3dmark11. What are these tests? and which one is more important when it comes to video editing?
Thank you again for your time and efferts
P.S. I am studying the article about Hard disks, it is really interesting!!! thanks
Correct it is a 17-inch, and of course it weighs and costs slightly more than a 15.6-inch
It is a very simple task to upgrade the unit to an dual SSD system, and memory upgrade is very easy. You undo one screw on the bottom and (below) this is what you see. Two disk drive carriers with my SSD's installed and two 8 GB SODIMM add on RAM modules
Those benchmarks have very little to do with editing with Premiere, there is only one real comperhensive Premiere benchmark it is our PPBM. -
Hello MacHeads: I downloaded Handbrake 0.9.1 for Tiger, so I can upload a homemade DVD for editing in imovie. Problem is I can't even access Handbrake Help book, because I think my firewall settings are preventing me. I tried turning off all my firewall settings.? IDK if I'm even doing that right. Can anyone help out here?
You don't need Handbrake for that if it is your own DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle.
a DVD is in a compresed format called mpeg2, which is standard across all DVDs. This is what is known as a 'final delivery format' and is not suitable for editing. Because is is compressed, a 4.7GB DVD can hold a two hour movie (dual layer DVDs twice that), whereas the DV stream from a video camera, which runs at about 13GB per hour, is not compressed and IS intended for editing.
In other words you have to 'reverse engineer' the DVD back to an uncompressed format in ordfer to edit it. There is a penalty for doing this in terms of slight quality loss, but it is one you can live with.
When you have your DVD as an icon on your desktop, double-click it, and it will open to reveal a TS-Folder containing a number of various files, some called VOB. These are the constituent parts of any video DVD.
When you have downloaded and installed mpegStreamclip, and purchased and installed the Apple mpeg2 plugin, open mpegStreamclip and drag the entire TS Folder into its window. Then using the various menus available to you (just explore them and you will get the hang of it) ask it to convert to DV.
That DV file, which will be many times larger than the original TS Folder, and which can a while to create (be patient - make coffee or prune the roses!) is what you can now import into iMovie for editing etc.
When you have finished doing that, you then have to turn the project back into a DVD.
mpegStreamclip can be downloaded from here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal. -
Import DVD as editable video in PhotoShop CS6
Is this possible? If not, are developers planning to make this into a new feature for the shipping version?
Hello, unless I misunderstand you, I don't know many users who would edit their own DVD rather than the files that created them. Per the copyright laws, you are not supposed to edit somebody else's movie...

Client Supplied AVI files from Flip Camera--Can't Edit in Premiere CS3
A client handed me a DVD-ROM disc with video footage he shot on a Flip camera.
The footage appears to import with no errors, but when I drag it to the timeline, I am presented with the "no" icon (O with a slash through it).
Apparently CS3 only sees the file as audio and I can drag it there.
VLC Media Player will play both the video AND audio portion, so I know the files are complete. It is just Premiere that can't deal with them.
Before I tell the client I can't take the job, is there anything I overlooked that would make these Flip camera AVI files editable in Premiere CS3?Here is one of the ARTICLES that Harm mentions, from the PrE Tips & Tricks sub-forum.
There is also a very recent post to this forum on using the Flip material. I think that I, Jeff and probably Harm commented in that one. You can filter your Seach by People and use any one of us. I'd start with Jeff Bellune and look for the more recent dates.
Good luck,

Computer CONSTANTLY restarts while editing with premiere and after effects
Whenever i edit in premiere or after effects, my computer will always just randomly restart. It normally does it more in after effects than premiere, but lately, it has been doing it a lot in premiere, sometimes as much as every 15 minutes. Here are my specs:
Windows 7 64 Bit
i7 Processor
12GB Ram
4tb Raid system
NVIDA GEFORCE video card
800 watt power supply
3ghz speed
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I have been told that it could be the video card before, but I highly doubt that my video card is not sufficient enough for basic video editing on premiere, as I know many people who have worse video cards that edit with no problem. Please help!Here is all the information about my computer:

Is there any way to import my OWN DVD movies into iTunes and my video iPod?
I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?
Thanks,
Suzanne
eMac, iBook G4 14", Indigo iMac G3, Indigo iBook Clamshell G3 Mac OS X (10.4.8)"That's too bad, because these are movies (DVDs) that I own and have purchased legally myself. How is that different from importing your own purchased CDs into iTunes? Seems like a double standard to me."
About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
That's not really the issue here, though.
The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
(Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)
...It's quite an interesting kind of subject, isn't it?

I have just finished editing in premiere pro, now how do i burn what i have just created to a dvd?
Are you using Premiere Pro Cloud? (PPro Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/message/4200840 for what you need to say when asking a question)
If yes, CAREFULLY read http://helpx.adobe.com/encore/kb/encore-cs6-installed-cc.html and follow ALL instructions
The PPro/Encore tutorial list in message #3 http://forums.adobe.com/message/2276578 may help, with more help in message #5 -

Somewhat disillusioned by the breadth of the pre-canned menu offerings in the "Street" version of Prel 9 and refusing to be held hostage by Adobe's "Plus" offerings, I decided to open up the world of DVD menu editing. I downloaded Chuck Engel's excellent PDF on the subject (is there an updated version to that? - His discussion centers around Version 2, although for the most part, his notations from that version on how to construct menus seems to be quite applicable to Prel Version 9; i.e., the basic syntax for naming the layers hasn't changed).
One thing I noticed when browsing through the DVD menus directory
Adobe Premiere Elements 9 -->DVD Templates --> DVD Menu Name
Is that most of the template structures use the PAL pixel dimension for SD (640 X 575) as opposed to NTSC (648 X 480). Is there a reason for that? There are skeleton templates for all four major formats (SD-NTSC, Wide Screen NTSC, SD-PAL, and Wide Screen PAL) and it would seem, at least superficially, that using the PAL pixel dimensions, as opposed to the NTSC pixel dimensions, would result only in a marginally larger vertical size of any resulting menu developed under those constructs, perhaps inferring that the tops and bottoms of any menus developed using the PAL construct would be slightly truncated.
Of course, if one still used the NTSC text and graphics guides, that would not be a problem. My basic questions is: In the majority of pre-canned menus offered by Adobe with it's base product, most of them seem to use the PAL pixel dimensions for SD as opposed to the NTSC dimensions.
Has anyone experienced difficulties with menus developed under the PAL definitions and used in an NTSC format ... incorrect menu size, strange appearances, etc., and more, why would Adobe package tier product with so may PAL menu templates if they weren't usable in the NTSC environment?
Thanks ...Continuing ...
It would appear to me that PrEl only needs a correctly named template file in the templates folder. If the syntax of the name is correct, PrEl will attempt to use it. For instance:
An SD NTSC template file name is structured thusly:
TemplateName_formatName_mm.psd
Where format name = ntsc_s; the entire file name being: TemplateName_ntsc_s_mm.psd
The equivalent SD PAL menu would be named:
TemplateName_pal_s_mm.psd
In essence, to me at least, this infers that if the file name is correct, PrEl will present it as a selection option, regardless of what is actually contained in the file. Of course, it must be a valid file type, but I am suggesting here that PrEl will attempt to use any file that is named correctly.
Which means I can develop a file of almost any size (within reason of course), give it a proper name, and PrEl will attempt to use it as a DVD Menu. By extension, I can develop a 16:9 menu, give it a proper name, and PrEl will allow me to use it, even thoiugh it looks crappy.
When I began looking into this, I assumed that when you initially defined your project during the setup phase that Adobe set a flag somewhere in the application that restricted your choices in matters like menu development to only those components with comparable attributes; i.e., if my project is defined as SD NTSC (640 X 480), PrEl will only offer me options with similar attributes.
This doesn' seem to be that case ... I can go in and select any menu I choose, even though its wrong for the format I'm using and it looks terrible.
So as long as I develop my menus with favorable pixel dimensions that compliment the display format, I can name it anything I want, as long as the name has the proper syntax.
Interesting.
An aside ... I have gotten so into this I an strongly considering jumping into the Premiere Pro arean and it would appear the menu system there is somewhat similar to what we are discussing here. Yes?
Thanks again
