Ripping vs. Converting

A bit of backstory: previously, using iTunes v.6, I imported my CD collection using the Apple Lossless format, out of a belief that I would be able to tell the difference between Lossless and MP3 encoding. Recently I decided to test that belief by randomly converting some of my Lossless files into MP3s (256 kbps), putting both kinds on a playlist, shuffling, and trying to guess which was which. I scored about 38%, which is low enough to make me think I can't really tell the difference. So I've decided to switch over to MP3.
Here's the question: would there be any difference between (1) re-importing all of the CDs using iTunes v.7 as MP3s or (2) simply using iTunes' conversion feature and converting all of my Lossless files to MP3s?
Thanks in advance!

No; you won't get any data from the CDs that you couldn't get from the Apple Lossless copies. If the previously encoded content is AAC or another lossy format, you should reimport from the CDs.

Thanks! But when I visit the site recently, I found the program was upgraded. Now it has 2 optimized output formats specially made for iPod 30G and 60G players! Thus it is easier and more convenient to use without complex settings as other software. Try it at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod.converter.exe
Another good news: there was a new discount suite ImTOO DVD to iPod Suitethat contains both the DVD to iPod Converter and iPod Movie Converter. It saves newly $20! Hope this can do some help

  • The Best DVD ripping/burning/converting software

I have herd alot about this Mac the Ripper deal but am having real trouble laying my hands on it. Is there perhaps other software that may allow me to Rip/Burn/Convert at my leisure, or will I have to resort to boot camp and Alcohol 120%? Thanks y'all

I certainly hope you're ripping your own DVD's, and not those belonging to, say, your friend, NetFlix, or your local video store.
Anyway, I very highly recommend using HandBrake to convert the DVD video into something more suitable. Just pop in the disc and play with the settings. It comes pre-loaded with presets for creating video for the iPod, tv, and PlayStation 3. (An XBox 360 preset is in the works.)
I personally recommend AVC/H.264 video (set to constant quality: 64%) with AAC 5.1 sound (set to 384 Kbps). It's a slow encoding process, but you'll be impressed with the output -- more so if your Mac is hooked up to an HDTV and home theater system.
If your legally-purchased DVD has encryption that HandBrake can't handle, then download MacTheRipper, and use that to extract a clean VIDEO_TS folder; then point HandBrake to the VIDEO_TS folder.

  • Ripped DVD, Converted to QT, Cant preview in FCE

I have bits and peices of a DVD that I ripped using Mactheripper, then converted by Handbrake, then converted to Quicktime.
I can view the clips in Quicktime.
I can import the QT Clips into FCE and see them in the browser. I can put those clips into the timeline. What I cant do is see any sort of preview by hitting the play button in the canvas.
Can someone figure out what I am doing wrong?

You're using Handbrake. That's for converting to iPod and such. It's not for production. Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your DVD.

  • CTplay2 has performed an illegal operation when trying to rip a track from a cd into Playcent

I have had Creative Playcenter for about three years with no problems until a week ago.
I was surfing the Internet and while on one webpage, I had the Playcenter
playing a playlist, the computer locked up after I tried to close a pop up ad. After rebooting, the Playcenter lost the list of tracks, it had the albums and artist lists, yet the track list showed "0". I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and reloaded
the tracks from the Nomad and now I am unable to rip tracks from cd's. I am able to convert existing wave files ripped from other cd ripping software yet cannot use the Creative Playcenter rip and convert feature without encountering this illegal operation message then it shuts it down. It's able to create the file where the mp3's are stored, but unable to tranfer the MP3 to it. No other changes have been made to my computer either. I just hope that I do not have to do a dreaded format and reinstall to fix this.
I really like this Creative product since I have had it have not had any problems with either the Nomad Jukebox or the software until the Internet surfing incident about a week ago
    Creative Nomad Jukebox 2LX 20GB

This error occurs when I try to rip a cd track into the Play Center. I have tried to repair from the disc with the anti virus disabled and while reinstalling another error message appears "scandir has caused an illegal operation" during the reinstall.

Also I forgot to mention in my first post, I have added some extra system sounds to my computer and that may have contributed to the problem of it freezing up at the time I clicked on the pop up ad in order to close it out. Some of the sounds activate during "restore up" and "minimize", the sounds or other Windows sounds do not activate while Playcenter is in use.

  • No Audio on HD ripped movies on ATV3 with v5.1

I really enjoy streaming movies and the like from my iTunes library to my three Apple TV's (2xATV2 and 1xATV3). I have ripped and encoded much of my DVD collection and once i got around the audio channels and the fact that i need to have the primary as Stereo I haven't looked back. I use DVD ripper on an old PC and then create the MP4 file with Handbrake on my iMac......fantastic.
recently I have started ripping and converting my Blu-Ray collection into HD mp4's using Pavtube on my iMac. Again i seem to have no problem creating and watching them until recently i.e. Sunday when I upgraded my ATV3 to firmware v5.1........I now get no audio from HD files that i have ripped but no issue with DVD's or downloaded HD content.
My iMac plays the movies fine through iTunes, they play absolutely at 720p on my ATV2's (still on firmware 5.0.2) it's just my ATV3 where i have the problem.
    So I have a few questions: -
    1. Has anyone else experienced this tedious phenomenon?
    2. Is it possible to downgrade the firmware upgrade to v5.0.2?
This isn't the first time that i have encountered oddities with firmware upgrades and an apparent lack of regression testing, but I love the products and what they offer when working. My kids and my wife can make it work!
    Thanks

I thought this would be much simpler than its turning out. haha. i wish there was a simple way to take my MKV blu-ray rip and create a perfect copy that was playable on my apple tv.
that way i could store my blu-rays away and always have digital copies ready to play but without losing video quality!
i'll check out Blu Ray to Apple TV Ripper (yes im on a mac)

  • Quicktime issue? Converter program not working?

So I have a ripper program and an iPod converter program that I've been using to import a TVshow (Avatar: The Last Airbender) into iTunes. I did the first two seasons about a year ago, but stopped because I didn't have enough space and because the third season wasn't out yet. But I just recently ripped and converted the third season from the DVDs I bought, and there's a problem.
After getting the DVDs converted, I tried importing them into iTunes and playing them. Everything worked fine. All of them played, the sound matched with the speaking, and everything was great.
So, just now I tried to add them to my iPod, and my iTunes froze up after almost getting it uploaded. There was, like, half a millimeter to go in the bar, and then iTunes said that it "Encountered a problem and needed to close." We've all gotten that message. So, I tried it again, figuring it was just a one-time thing. It still did the same thing. I tried a different episode. Didn't work. I've looked for updates, and I know I have the most recent version of iTunes (8.0.2), and the most recent version of my iPod nano (3rd gen) The only thing I could find out by looking at the diagnostics was that it was a quicktime related problem. Could it be a problematic format? (MPEG-4) Or is it something else? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Nvm. Got a mac.

  • Convert mp3 to aiff

i imported songs into itunes as mp3.how can i convert them to aiff and i done tried setting preferances, hit convert to aiff and its not working.at least if it did the show info still says mp3.if i burn the mp3 through itunes set on audio does that convert it to aiff and burn it as such?

A data disk will not not play on your CD player like an audio CD. It's only useful for backing up in case you need to restore your library.
The convert feature should work. Don't know why it's not. What view do you have your library set on? You might tell iTunes to show duplicates and make sure the converted file isn't hiding somewhere. (You say you set the Preferences....that would be iTunes prefs, Advanced, Import (IF you want to convert the file) and set to AIFF.
If you're burning the file after that, setting Burning to Audio CD.
    +*That's how it should work.*+
P.S. Are you sure the files are MP3s? If they were downloaded from iTunes, they are protected AAC and you won't be able to convert them to AIFF. (Have to burn, then re-rip to convert those.)

  • Converting all my mp3s to w

I'm getting semi-close to filling up my zen sleek (only a few more gbs left on it), so I'm going to convert ALL my music to wmas, I think. Creative audio converter works good/fast for me, so I'm going to use that. Now, on the "Set Destination Format" options, under WMA, what should I choose? Should I leave it at 28 kbps? I just want to make sure I keep the quality good and make the size smaller. Thanks.

Number - Coverting MP3 files to WMA files will result in files that sound much worse that if you had created the WMA files directly from the CDs. Far better to re-rip than convert.
Number 2 - Coverting from MP3-28 to WMA28 will result in files that are exactly the same size, which sound worse because of the recompression.
If you really want to do this, we need to know the bitrate of your MP3 files. If you are starting with 28kbps MP3, then I would just leave them alone. The quality loss to go to a lower bitrate WMA will be huge.
If you are starting with 320kbps MP3 files, then you can save lots of space going to 28kbps WMA files. You will give up a bit of sound quality, but it could be acceptable. You would need to test it out to see what you think.
I would NEVER go below 28kbps WMA....

Use Automator. QuickTime is Automator compatible. However, you will first need to download the "iPod" script from the Automator web site. For a tutorial and instructions, download Brian Gary's "Automator for the People" Ripplecast from the iTunes podcast area.

  • I'm trying to sync a video I ripped from a DVD and it won't load into the device

I'm ripping a few DVDs into iTunes. They vids play on I tunes but now will not load onto my tablet, it just gives a notice that says video did not sync, contact iTunes for mor info. Do I have to do another conversion before the tablet is happy? I have a bran new dell, windows 8 and am ripping with Win X DVD ripper.

Since it seems kind of confusing what's going on, I'd recommend downloading DVD Ripper for Windows. The trial allows you all conversions without time limitation. In the preferences, have ATV2 checked off under what you want the movie converted to. Put in the DVD, and hit Compress, not rip. This will rip and convert the file. Then, drop the file into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder. See if that works.

  • No succes with converting video, it stays bl

    Hi,
We've been trying to rip and convert video. We have been using AVS converter and Moyea to Rip but our video content stays black? We can hear the audio but we don't see the cvideocontent? For some reason they made it very hard to put a simple DVD on the Zen Creative... Does anybody know why it stays black and help us out?!!
    Thanx

    Hi,
I'm not aware of the laws in each specific country, but in a lot of countries it is not lawful. Copying DVDs requires breaking the encryption on the disks, which in itself is illegal. We cannot allow discussion on it for legal reasons, though I'm sure there are many websites and forums where you can find in depth information on this if you need it.
