Ripple Delete Problems

I have been training myself on Final Cut Express 4 with the lessons from the Weynand book. I am unable to do ripple deletes. If I use Sequence > Ripple Delete, I delete the selected clip and the gap remains. If I hit Shift-Delete (small delete) nothing happens. I also am unable to remove gaps in the timeline by selecting them and htting delete. What is wrong?

I don't have version 4, I use 3.5, so this may not be entirely helpful, but if you right-click (command-click) on the gap in the track, one of the options will be to fill with a slug. Then ripple delete the slug, and it should shift to eliminate the gap.
As for why you're not getting satisfaction from the ripple delete, I'm not sure. Are your cap locks on, sometimes that stops rendering and it might also keep certain actions from taking place. Just a guess.

DVD Studio Pro 4 ripple delete problem

Anyone know why, in DVD Studio Pro 4, when I delete a video clip from the timeline the VIDEO ripple deletes shifting to the left but the AUDIO does not? What can I do t fix this?

DVDSP - and DVDs in general - operate under the assumption that video and audio are not always linked.
Basically, you'll have to keep doing (what I imagine) you're doing already - delete your video clip, then move your audio clip back into sync with the existing video. Or trim the audio appropriately.

Ripple delete or extract problem

I am trying to perform the ripple delete function and/or the extract function and I am ending up with a gap or hole instead of the timeline closing the gap. I swear it worked earlier and now it doesn't. Is there a button or something else that is preventing the gap to close?

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 crasing from ripple delete and copy

I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 for several months now and it's been working with next to no problems and I've been very happy with it until today.
As I've neared the end of a recent project, after doing nothing different than usual I went to use ripple delete and every time I try it I now get this error message:

I am, however, still able to move single clips, adjust the length of individual clips and able to watch my project.
I've tried two different computers and restarted one and nothing has changed.
Is there an explanation as to why this is happening? Is there anything I can do to get around this or make it stop?

I've reverted back to 5.5.0 as I was experiencing lock-up problems with the BM Intensity Pro.
Unfortunately I haven't found a way of simply uninstalling the update and reverting back to an earlier version. Win 7 Sytem Restore wouldn't, so I had to uninstall Premiere Pro, apply the Adobe Clean Install utility (or whatever!) and then reinstall PP CS5.5. Trouble was that it reinstalled the whole suite, not just PP - so I lost all custom workspaces across the suite.
Grrrrr!

Ripple delete broken? - Serious issue

SO ive spent the last 2 weeks finalising a project up in preparation for mastering, and yesterday right before i exported it i dropped in a 2 sec. black video at the start of the timeline and then rippled everything back into place.
Now, im half in this mess because i didnt check, and im half in this mess because something simple that SHOULD work every time DOESNT work.
The end result after the ripple delete is that every single one of my transitions and audio crossfades disappeared from my 27 minute project (and there were a lot)
From a brief browse of the internet it appears this problem has existed since PPRO1.5 and nothings been done about it.
Seriously guys, you all get paid a ton of money to write the software, if something as simple as Ripple Delete is broken and can f**k my project if im not careful then REMOVE IT, Before some other poor soul accidentally loses 2 weeks work and looks like an idiot when they cant present the master to their client on time.
Im off to spend the rest of my day putting disolves back in my project, i suggest you (adobe) spend yours and fix this ridiculous bug, lest you lose your market share to apples final cut.

to be honest i wouldnt have a clue how it has the same issue
i guess youd have to ask how premier deleted all of my transitions in the first place then we might be closer to an answer
id love to know if this is an issue that can be avoided in the future, if theres someone out there thats experienced the same problem
the previous workaround i found didnt help me at all so ive had to resort to manually putting back all of the transitions
and, craig ill blame the tools if the tools are crap
if i was hammering nails and the hammer magically removed all the nails from the wall while i was out getting lunch then there would clearly be an issue with the hammer, no?

Ripple Delete and Chapter Marker question

Hi All,
If I ripple delete a section of a clip ( and I guess more generically, if one cuts/inserts) are the chapter markers on the timeline kept in sync with the remaining clips. And if not, is there a workaround.

What are question answers?

Ripple Delete doesnt work always. Why?

Hi guys, ripple delete there are some times that i cant use it. Some times it happens from a poin and on. Does it have something to do with having all the clips united wihtous spaces, or putting the workare bar in a specific point?

When I ripple-delete, all track-keyframes for " track volume" shift accordingly, as they should, to the new place in time.
However, all track-keyframes for the "panners" (Rt Lft, Front Rear, Center and LFE) they do not shift to the new place in time, in other words they remain in the same place as before.
What am I doing wrong??????
1-The Keyframes that move are from the "Volume Tracks" (The issue does not concern Clip-keyframes)
2-All my tracks are unlocked
When I apply Ripple Delete:
Clips-and their "Clip Keyframes"-shift fine. (CLIPS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM)
Tracks and their "Track Keyframes" do not shift (with the exception of Volume Track*).
To summarize:
The issue is with the Tracks and not with the Clips:
Clips move fine.
Volume Track moves fine.
Right and Left Panner Track do not shift
Front and Rear Panner Track do not shift
Center Panner Track do not shift
LFE Panner Track do not shift
Anyone knows what am i doing wrong? Please help. Is there a patch for this? A plug in that fixes the issue? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

Two Related (?) file deleting problems in Finder and Time Machnine

My internal drive is partition into two volumes. In the second one (the "non-boot" one), I was have trouble putting files in the trash that were locked. As I was tracking that down I coincidentally(?) started having another problem.
I started getting a message that the files being put into the trash must be deleted immediately. I check permissions and I had read/write Privileges in the user account I'm normally logged into. However, If I logged into my administrator account, I could put things in the trash without deleting them. I noticed that ignore ownerships wasn't checked, so I checked that.
That allowed my to put files into the trash without immediately deleting them. I went ahead and deleted the files I wanted to get rid of. However, I'm wondering if there was another issue because I am lead to understand that the ownership privileges shouldn't have necessitated checking "ignore ownerships"?
Also, I had trouble deleting the backups of those files and folders in time machine. I can delete most of it. But for one folder (and all the folders in which it resides in the hierarchy) I can't deleted it. I tell it to delete backups of that folder (or folders it is in), I put in the password, and goes "ding". But nothing disappears...
(After I wrote this, I tried unchecking "ignore ownerships" and the problem did not reappear. I can still put files in the trash without the immediate deletion problem.)

Are you doing that via the Finder or Terminal? If so, that's not the way to delete backups. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
And now I'm getting an error in time machine. "Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"". I do get info on the disk, and my account has Read & Write privleges, but it say "You can only read" above that".
The Finder or Terminal deletions may have corrupted your backups. Repair them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

I'm doing the deletion through Time Machine (I go into Time Machine, find the folder in the backup, and ask Time machine to delete all backups of that folder).
I did find the tip of unmounting the disk, rebooting, and remounting it. That Stopped messages about the disk being read only. However, the folder still doesn't delete. I'm also a bit worried about these being symptoms of some other problem...

When do the Ripple Delete and/or Join commands become active?

I have been using Soundtrack Pro for a while, but I have not been able to use the Ripple Delete and Joind commands. Under which conditions do these commands become available? Does the Ripple Delete command work like in FCP? I use ProTools, and I would love Soundtrack to include something like the Shuffle mode, in which removing a section on the Timeline would make the rest of the audio samples on that track move up.
Is this possible? I know this can be done on the audio editor, but sometimes editing to picture requires doing this on the Timeline.

Great tip Simon - but do you not find this a bit irritating - that you have to go through this extra process just to perform a ripple delete?
The other point here, is that if you make two cuts in a clip, and then drag over the timeslice section, even with snapping turned on, it seems easy to me to not pin-point the edit in quite the same way that you do with a simple cut. By dragging over, if you miss the edit point by a fraction, you can end up ripple deleting over the cut you intended to make.
Sadie does all this with so much more ease in my view... a lot quicker when doing very fast editing. I'm surprised that with a 'pro app' tag, apple haven't gone the extra few yards with STP. Doesn't quite cut it (in my view)

How to show audio/video from timeline when I've already ripple deleted

Is there a way to show on a time line info that I've ripple deleted? that is, for example I clipped too much from the first part of my timeline and I want to put some of that back.

You haven't destroyed anything by the ripple delete. Just move your clip over and extend the part you still want with your mouse. There are shortcut keys as well, but I don't remember them just now. When you highlight your clip, you should see a handle at the end - just extend it. You may have to zoom into the timeline.

Ripple delete in to out?

Okay I can't for the life of me find the keyboard shortcut for this but it must be possible, can someone help me out?
I just want to ripple delete what I've marked between in and out.

Dimmed ripple delete in Premiere CS6

I am having this one interesting issue but I noticed it one project only so far. I double checked everything and also in other projects. The ripple delete option is dimmed (grayed out) and I can`t perform it on timeline in this particular project. The project is very simple, no locked tracks or so, it`s PAL DV standard like every other project I checked and is not grayed out in others. I have no idea what could be the bug. Any suggestions?

SDB - delete problem/solution

Hi Experts.
Is it possible to delete problem/solution from solution database? There is information in help that it is not possible to delete problem/solution, but that they can be archived.. But note 946030 says it is not available...

Hello Piotr,
In version 4 it was released one note (730402) that allow us to delete some symptoms and solutions. However, this may lead into some inconsistencies if they're linked with documents. We've never tried to execute it.... but if this may help you, try it

How do I Stop Ripple Deleting of Clip in V1?

I'm using DSP 4. I have a clip on V1 that I altered in FCP. I want to replace the original clip with the new one. They're the same length. If I delete the clip in DSP the rest of the clips ripple delete and fill in where the clip was. How can I replace a clip in V1 with one of the same length.

If the new file has the same name, you cam just replace the file in the assets and DVDSP must read the new one.
Sometimes you need to make the change with DVDSP closed and be sure to empty the trash after deleting the old one. Are you encoding inside DVDSP or the video file is encoded in Compressor?

Ripple Delete

Why would I get an operation not allowed message when I try to do a ripple delete? There are 4 video tracks I have them all selected and mark and in and an out. Then shift delete and I get the error message. Help.

Are you trying to cut in the middle of a transition?
Is one of the video tracks linked to a locked audio track?
You might also try running the razor blade tool down the entire in and out point on all tracks to check your delete section.
