Risk to Mac from Government Thumb Drive Virus?

I was just informed that my government-issue thumb drive contained "remnants" of the virus which led to the US government to ban/severely limit usage of portable USB drives. I had used the USB device to transfer files/photos between my macbook and my work computer. I do not have an AV program on the macbook. I do not know if my macbook has been infected. Further, I have been informed by the IT folks that commercially-available software cannot detect this malware, and the only govt scanning programs are Windows-only. I have used other USB devices in the macbook. The nature of the malware would not be explained to me. So, is my computer at risk? What steps, if any, do I need to take? Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. FYI - I keep my firewall on for "essential services only".

I pick these examples of malware up often: from student computers, department computers, computers in the shops I use (printing) and pretty much anywhere computers with Windows are found. I normally discover that there is such a file on the thumb drive when I put it in the Mac's USB port and Crossover starts up as the malware tries to self-install. I just quit and then delete the .exe files I find.
Just occasionally of late, while being able to delete the executable part (the dangerous bit), some residual directories have been left and I cannot delete these without Root access (not even sudo works). A technician with a secure Win machine takes these off for me.
Without Crossover, it is a simple task to look (using a Mac) and delete in 99% of cases but if you tried this with a Win machine, well. . . .

  • ITunes from a thumb drive?

I'm fairly new to iTunes and I was wondering if it would be possible to copy and play my iTunes playlist/library from a thumb drive. I am not authorized to download anything to my pc at work. There is a further complication: my iTunes files are on a macbook 10.5 and my pc at work is runing windows 7 (media player).  I would appreciate any advice. Thanks  Bill

If the work computer doesn't have iTune then isn't any point in doing playlists and a full itunes library because WMP won't understand it (can't say for sure because I have never used WMP, but I'd be greatly surprised).  Still, you can copy your files to the drive and kind of keep a playlist structure by dragging from an itunes playlist window to a folder that you have gven a similar name.  You'll have to sort things out on the WMP side since I don't know if it will be content playing files on a flash drive or if it will want to add them to a list like iTunes does. If it was a Mac I'd use a player such as Cog which lets you make temporary lists that don't leave a trace and doesn't try over-structuring things.

How is each drive formatted? If you don't know it's easy to find out. In Finder highlight each and click Command I (that's I as in Ivan) and it will tell you. Both drives should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) assuming you are only using each with your Mac. If you share with MS Windows machines then it get's more complex.

If one drive works and the other doesn't that points the finger at the errant drive. They are cheap, replace it. To check formatting right click it in Finder and choose Get Info and look for Format type. Finally do you eject it when removing it or do you just pull it out of the USB connection?

  • How to get mac to recognize thumb drive?

how to get mac to recognize thumb drive?

Launch the Disk Utility application. Does the thumb drive appear in the list of volumes on the left side? If not, try using a different USB port. If the issue still occurs then try restarting the system. If the thumb drive appears in Disk Utility check out how it is formatted. Do you have data on it that you need?  If it can be erased try formatting it with Disk Utility using the Mac OS Extended (journaled) format. If the thumb drive will be used in a Mac and PC environment then take a look at this article for additional information on choosing the right format.

  • Can't install from USB Thumb Drive

I'm trying to install MacOs 10.7 from Apple USB Thumb Drive on a 2011 MacMini, but when I restart from the USB drive apper on the screen a "X" and then the computer shuts down.
    What's wrong?
On the MacMini there was already MacOs 10.7, but now I formatted the HardDisk.
    Sorry for my english,
    Gregorio Pellegrino

Is the system able to boot into the recovery/installer from the Mac OS X 10.7 USB Drive? Is this error occurring after you've started the install process from the USB?
You may have to completely repartition the hard disk drive with 1 partition and a GUID partition table. I had a similar issue when I moved a hard disk from a Windows machine and forgot to change the partition type.
Note: Creating a new partition table will make all data currently on the disk inaccessible, effectively erasing the data.
Here's the steps to repartition using the Disk Utility application available after booting the mac from the USB Installer.
    1) Highlight/select the Mac's internal Hard Disk Drive (not the volume) in Disk Utility. The disk will be named something like "240 GB OCZ-VERTEX3", depending on your specific size, make and model. Basically the format is "Size GB Make/Model".
    2) Click the "Partition" tab on the right side.
    3) From the "Partition Layout" pick box select "1 Partition"
    4) Click the "Options" button below the drive space diagram. Select the option "GUID Partition Table". Click OK.
    5) Click the Apply button and allow Disk Utility to complete the task.
    6) Quit Disk Utility and begin the install process to the Mac's Internal Hard Disk Drive.
The above resolved this issue for me and it makes good sense why it worked since the partition scheme/table on my drive was MBR and I changed it to GUID.
    Good Luck,
    -Josh

  • Booting two Macs from one external drive: 10.8 and App Store?

I boot two Macs from one external harddrive. Does this mean that when 10.8 is sold exclusively via the App Store and thereby linked to a unique hardware identifier, I am going to have issues with activation/authentification each time I switch machines? I have avoided the App Store since I discovered that an app I bought there, and which I really needed to open automatically on log-in, had to be manually re-activated with my Apple ID after every switch (so that I eventually deleted it and reverted to an earlier, non-App Store version).

    Welcome to the forum!
There are a couple of "solutions" to your problem.  The easiest, and possibly the best for you (although it is a bit slower) is to copy your catalog onto the external drive as well.
Then when you plug in the drive, you will always have your latest catalog for access.
The other way is to keep a local copy of your catalog, and copy it onto the local drive as a way to transfer it from one computer to the other.
This has the problem of possibly not being in sync, that is, you forgot to copy it over once and did some editing.  Then you would end up with essentually two different catalogs, instead of one in two places.
You can copy the catalog either with your OS, or you can "export as catalog" and specify the external drive as the destination.  Then, on your other computer, "import from catalog" and only take the meta-data settings (it's on the import dialog box).
Personally, when I'm traveling, I have my catalog on my external drive as well.  It just makes life easier, and I don't have to worry about it being out of sync, or losing it (and not the images).
So, I would go with the first method, at least to start.  To get your catalog over there, you can either export as catalog or copy it, either one will work.
You can find the location of your catalog file (if you don't know where it is) in the catalog settings menu prompt.  Both the location and the name will be displayed.
    Cheers!

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

bought a  macbook pro retina.  backed up 3yr old macbook pro to external hard drive.  how do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac?  thanks!

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Cheers,

  • Free upgrade from Lion (Thumb drive) to Mountain Lion?

I bought a Lion USB thumb drive on 12 June, not realising ML announced. Does Apple offer a free upgrade in this situation, equivalent to those who purchased a new non-ML computer from 11 June onwards? I can't see this situation mentioned anywhere.

The Mountain Lion up to date program only applies to hardware purchases.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything you can do in your situation.
