RLDP enabled on WLC causes client drops?

The release notes for WLC code 4.0.206.0 states, "Enabling RLDP may cause access points connected to the controller to lose connectivity with their
clients for up to 30 seconds." Does anyone have more information about this? I don't like the word "may" in there. I need to enable RLDP but I can't afford to have clients dropping. Is this something that will work differently in a new release?

There's no may about it. If clients are on an AP that decides to go rogue-hunting they will be told to "get out of the pool" (de-authenticated) to facilitate their going elsewhere. The same applies to DCA - Dynamic Channel Allocation - part of Auto-RF. If you don't have AP density, clients that use fast roaming, or tolerant apps, you would be best served to turn these features off (or On-Damand).

  • WLC 5508 - Client Intermittent Drop Out

We have an intermittent issue where clients seeem to drop their connectivity intermittently and I wondered if anyone else have seen this.
When the client drops out it is associated to the AP at good signal strength -45 -> -49 dbm. All our clients are running Win7. Once the issue occurs a yellow exclamation mark appear across the system tray wireless icon and a message appears in the "Network and Sharing Centre" that either says “no internet connection” or “DNS server not responding". The association with the AP appears to be intact. This seems to be confirmed as the client can ping its default gateway and can be pinged from another device but no connectivity above layer 3 appear to be working. Really the best way to describe it is that all communication above layer 3 stops. This behaviour is extremely intermittent.
The wireless clients are a small cross section of HP business laptops. HP8460p, HP6930p and a few other models. The laptops are all running the latest wireless drivers available (that was the first thing we tried). We have two 5508 wireless controllers operating 60 APs between them. Most of the APs in the area where we are seeing the issue are AIR-LAP1242 we do run the AIR-CAP3502 also but not in this area. We only have 2.4GHz enabled but with the extended data rates (to 130mbps). We have multiple WLANs but the one that seems to be causing the issue is the only one running WPA2.
The only way to restore full connectivity to the client is to hard reset the wireless adapter.
We have run debugs on the client and ran a sniffer trace between the controller and the authentication server but so far this has not turned up anything. The wireless controller is showing the client still associated but a link test from the controller to the client failed.
Any ideas would be welcome. I can provide further information if required.

    Hi
What EAP type do you have deployed, as I guess you are using 802.1X?
Does this problem occur during client roaming?
Is the problem specific to only HP devices or are other laptop vendors in the mix?
I would suggest that you perform a packet capture on one of the wireless clients when the problem happens. You could use wireshark. Perform the following tests during the capture:
    1. Ping a remote device on a different subnet.
    2. Perform a layer 4 and above activity such as opening a web page or FTP.
In the interim, you could try the following:
    1. Disable Aironet IE on the WLAN SSID Advanced tab
    2. Increase the packet max-retries timeout value on the dot11radio interface.

  • All clients drop association at the same time

We are seeing clients dropping their association with few APs all at the same time and would not connect back for several minutes (or even hours). And all of a sudden, they are start to connect back normally.
Wondering what can cause these kind of frequent client disconnects? Only a section of the building is affected and the remaining areas are fine.
Also, at times, I see the signal strength varies between Excellent and Poor within few seconds.
We are using LAPs and WiSM.
    Any help would be appreiciated.
    Thank you,
    Mohan

Its in the 2.4 GHz band. I have observed this behavior. It works well for a day or two and suddenly a couple of APs only drop all the clients all at the same time. After few minutes (or hours) they are connect back to the APs fine.
This repeats 3 or 4 times in a week.
    Thanks,
    Mohan

  • Lync 2010 client - Drop down entreis are grey instead of black

We are having Lync 2010 environment. Few users, in Lync 2010 client - Drop down entreis are grey instead of black. Could anyone of you suggest, what needs to be done to fix it?
    Thanks
    Funnyghost

CAS shutdown shouldn't cause issues.  If you type the number you see into the Lync search box, does it normalize to E.164 format?  If you type in an E.164 number into the dropdown and try to call that, do you see the number there in black?

  • Enable Automatic site-wide client push installation

    Hi,
We are configuring sccm 2012 next to sccm 2007. We want to push SCCM 2007 clients automatically to pc's in a certain OU. Can this be done via "Enable Automatic site-wide client push installation".
So will it deploy to only the discovered devices in this OU we configured to discover or really install site wide (probably not but need to be sure)?
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

Automatic client push will initiate a push to all devices that are discovered (where client = 0) and that are assigned to the site (-> boundaries).

  • What Changes to Software Update Group Causes Clients to Re-check Compliance

    Hello,
I have a number of software update groups that have been deployed over the past couple of years. When Microsoft release new updates etc. some of the updates already deployed change their status e.g. an update might get marked as expired. As a result of this
I can go from having clients reporting as being compliant to a situation where they are in an unknown state until they report back again.
Does anyone know what changes to an update already deployed would cause clients to have to check their compliance status for that software update group?
    Thank you.
    Stephen

If you are referring to the enforcement state, this is indeed specific to the deployment, not the group itself.
With regards to your question - Upon a change to your deployment, your clients will receive updated policy.  On a successful evaluation of the deployment, it will re-send a state message if necessary.  Unfortunately I do not know if there are certain
things that do not trigger a policy update (i.e. change in the name or description vs. update membership or deadline change)

  • WRVS4400N v2 WLAN clients dropping

I purchased a WRVS4400N for my home to replace an older router. Since I started using the Cisco router, WLAN clients drop. I can sometimes get them back after initiating a ping to a static LAN IP, but it takes a few seconds.
This issue impacts Win Vista, Win7, Mac, Android, and Linux machines...so basically anything that does WiFi. There seem to be many complaints here with no resolution. Has anyone fixed this problem in their network? I'd really hate to return this thing, but it's becoming unusable.

    Mr. Cameron,
Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. I am truly sorry to hear about your issue you are having with your router.
Have you called into the Small Business Support Center for help on this? If you have may I have your case number so that I can pull your case and review it to see if there is anything I can do for you.
If you have not called in, I would like to strongly encourage you to call in and get a case created and let one of our agents help you with this issue. THe WRVS4400N is a very good router and I want to make sure that we do everything we can to keep your business.

  • WLC 5508 and WPA/WPA2 causes client DNS lookups to fail

Hi all, we just recently received a brand new 5508 with 6.0.199.4 firmware.  We currently have three LAP-1250s that associate just fine to the WLC.
For testing purposes only, we enabled WPA2 with both types of encryption TKIP and AES with an ASCII PSK.   The clients are able to connect, authenticate and get an IP address from our local (same subnet) DHCP server.  They also get the DNS info from our DHCP server.   However, the problem is that they are not able to do any DNS lookups.   I haven't run wireshark yet to confirm, but it sounds very familiar to this problem: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3202369
I've even had clients use nslookup with both of my DNS servers and they are not able to resolve.  I'm not sure if the request or the reply is being blocked/dropped, but I can find out tomorrow.
Now the strange part - if I turn off WLAN security altogether, it works!   That's right, I just disable L2 security for the WLAN and re-connect the clients and they are able to do full DNS lookups.
AND - if I leave L2 security configured (WPA2 with PSK), and enable L3 Passthrough security - the clients get to the auth web page, click the "accept" button and are then able to do full DNS lookups too.
What could be the problem here?   There's nothing I see configured for the L2 or L3 security settings that could be the culprit.  We're using default (from Cisco) configuration, so there's no ACLs configured or anything like that to block DNS.
Another strange thing here which may or not be related - during initial configuration the setup asked for a virtual IP - so I gave it one - 1.1.2.2.   Now when I do an ipconfig /all on the client, I see this 1.1.2.2 address listed as the DHCP server.  Why is this?   It's definitely getting an IP address and DNS info from the correct DHCP server, so not sure why this is showing up.
    Thanks, Matt

    Hi Matt,
Just wanted to jump in, and also mention it may be worth attempting to disable the fastpath feature on the 5508, and test your failing client again.  You may be hitting CSCti34667.
    debug fastpath cfgtool --fc.disable
This command can be run via Telnet/SSH.  Please keep in mind that fastpath will automatically re-enable periodically, so we recommend disabling every 10 minutes as a workaround for any known fastpath issues.  You can do so by running the following Macro in TeraTerm:
    :mainloop
       sendln "debug fastpath cfgtool --fc.disable"
       pause 600
    goto mainloop
If you find that disabling fastpath resolves your concern, you can reach out to TAC for an Escalation Image with the fix for this one.
    Best,
    Drew

Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
    Thank You

Auth succeeded from AAA server side but there is a problem with 4-way handshake. It is obvious the problem is with the client because it does not reply the message 2 of the handshake.
    What is this client?
Try upgrading the driver or the firmware. That sort it out.

  • Client drops - Tuning EAP timers?

I have had some clients complaining (laptop users) about being dropped from the WiFi and this appears to correlate with the events in the WLC log for DOT1X-4-MAX_EAPOL_KEY_RETRANS for those clients.
Drops are more frequent when the network and neighbours networks are under load during the day.
What would your advice be on tuning this? I based my settings off a guide found here:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/46101/eap-timers-wireless-lan-controllers
The way I interpret this is that the settings present a bit of a tradeoff between the risk of being dropped and the time it takes to get back in if you are dropped.
We have a WLC 2500 with 2700 APs running 7.6.130.0.
Below are the current settings that we have set:
Edit: Table did not paste correctly
Local Auth Active Timeout1 (in secs) "300"
Identity Request Timeout (in secs) "5"
    Identity request Max Retries "12"
    Dynamic WEP Key Index "0"
    Request Timeout (in secs) "30"
    Request Max Retries "2"
    Max-Login Ignore Identity Response "enable"
    APOL-Key Timeout (in milliSeconds) "1000"
    EAPOL-Key Max Retries "2"
    EAP-Broadcast Key Interval(in secs) "3600"
Local Auth Active Timeout1 (in secs)
    Identity Request Timeout (in secs)
    Identity request Max Retries
    Dynamic WEP Key Index
    Request Timeout (in secs)
    Request Max Retries
    Max-Login Ignore Identity Response
                 disable             enable
    EAPOL-Key Timeout (in milliSeconds)
    EAPOL-Key Max Retries
    EAP-Broadcast Key Interval(in secs)

I should have mentioned that this is on WPA2 also.
What I'm told is that the drops may occur 2-3 times per day by some users. Other's don't have this issue or aren't bothered enough by it to notice. There is no definite correlation between equipment or area although proximity to APs does influence this (drops are more likely with increased distance) but we still have users without such drops at the same location as users experiencing them. Drops only seem to occur during busy office hours and not outside of them despite this being a 24/7 access office with a considerable amount of people staying late.
I could probably attempt a cli client debug capture and see if something else shows up although the problem is not very frequent so it will be a long day.
Another question would be what is withing the tolerances of how WiFi should perform in this situation. Is it reasonable for this to happen in a WiFi congested spot.
Entries for an affected client in wlc-syslog set to debug (not the cli debug tool) may look like this during a day for the mac aa:bb:cc:aa:bb:cc:

  • VOIP VLAN using 802.1q frames causing massive dropped packets

I have a MBP 2.16 connected via 1Gbps Ethernet to my corporate network. I also have a Cisco 7960 VOIP phone and it seems that 802.1q VOIP VLANs are causing the MBPro's Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet adapter to drop 1326 packets out of 3559. It's absolutely unusable at my office, where my laptop is my main machine. I'm having to use my Compaq N610c to browse the Internet and read e-mail. Apple, please update the driver and save me!!!

I'd check a few things, are you sure the switch that you are connected to is really at 1000Base-T? If it is a Cisco switch I've seen all sorts of probems with auto-negotiation, I'd try to get your network administrator to "fix" the port at the speed you wish to run your network at (ie 100/1000) make sure the duplex is set correctly on the MacBook Pro (make sure it is set to the same as the switch). Also ensure that jumbo frames are enabled on the Cisco switch and make sure the MTU is set correctly for your network. This involves some tweaking of the ethernet interface in the network preferences of OS X.
Of course if there are indeed 802.1q problems with the onboard NIC then you could get your network administrator to disable .1q frames on the port that your MBP is connected to, you won't be able to use a "loop through" port on a VoIP phone if the phone relies on .1q trunking, so you'll need a port for the phone and a seperate .1q clean port for the MBP.

  • Linksys WRT330N with Intel Wifi 5100 AGN causing signal drops.

I have been using my Linksys WRT330N for quite a while, and it has been wonderful.  I have 3 pcs, 2 wired and 1 wireless.  The wireless laptop died and was replaced.  The replacement is causing problems and I need assistance finding a solution.  The new laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and it has an Intel Wifi Wireless AGN internal wireless adapter.  My two wired pc's can surf the net without the slightest hicup until the wireless laptop with its wireless N card gets into the action.  Once the laptop gets on, the hicups are frequent.

As you can see the signal drops show as the router resetting.  It was not me unplugging it.  The router as the only firmware which is available, v1.00.4 and the network drivers for the laptop's wireless wifi 5100 card are up to date.  A Dell technitian controlled my laptop and did it himself.
    Any suggestions?

  • Pre-n enabler seems to cause issues with lock up/beach ball

I just received my new C2D MBP yesterday with 3G of RAM and all was peachy. I decided to install the $1.99 Pre-N enabler patch from Apple and it appears that I'm not alone in having that cause system lock ups and beach balls from ****.
I unfortunately seem to be in the same boat. It runs for awhile and then all of a sudden it will just lock up and I'll get the spinning beach ball from **** forever, until I reboot.
I'm using mine with a NetGear Pre-N wireless router and while I'm getting 140kpbs connections I am getting a lot of receive errors and the machine just goes off to la-la land.
I was worried about something else until I read these posts over in Internet & Networking and now I'm wondering if there really is an issue with whatever the "enabler" did. It ceratinly appears to be this. Nothing else seems to cause it this kind of beach ball death.
So now I guess we need to look for an "un-enabler" patch. Just out of curiosity where do we email problems like this to get resolved?
    UGGHHHHHHH!!!
    Peter

I have this same problem. I reported a bug to apple bug id#4990056
    Here is what i wrote:
    10-Feb-2007 10:36 PM Brooks Roy:
    Summary:
I recently got a Linksys WRT350N 802.11n router and using it with my macbook pro core 2 duo. The router is firmware version 1.03.2.
After installing the enabler from the apple site i verified it upgraded properly and it shows a/b/g/n for my airport card. However the computer has been locking up more and more. I finally narrowed it down to the airport card. Here is what happens:
    Steps to Reproduce:
With regular airport usage, the mac will all of the sudden give the spinning 'beach ball' and just sit there. A simple http download will stop and the mac will become unresponsive. I cannot launch new applications. The icons will bounce in the dock but never open. I cannot force-quit any applications. My only option is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.
I can almost duplicate the issue 7 times out of 10. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes or so before it locks up, sometimes its almost immediately.
I have done a full fsck and permissions. I also downloaded tiger cache cleaner and cleaned all settings. I have also booted off the apple install cd and done a extended full RAM check on the 2Gb installed in my computer.
I have restored my IO80211Family.kext from my other macbook pro (regular core duo) and my problems have gone away. I am 100% sure there is a bug with the 802.11n enabler and the Linksys WRT350N.
I do not have any special configuration on my linksys, just MAC based wireless authentication.
When using the MacBook pro on the WRT350N in 802.11g without the latest 802.11n enabler the mac performs fine and does not become unresponsive.
    Expected Results:
I expect the mac to perform just as a 802.11g network will work with increased transfer speeds.
    Actual Results:
    See above.
    Regression:
It only occurs when using network traffic (i.e Mail.app, Safari browsing sites, etc. Any application that requires Airport.
    Notes:
I am using the original IO80211Family.kext driver that does not have 802.11n support and it works properly. Also using builtin ethernet with airport off and the 802.11n driver works (obviously).

  • Can't ping, telnet, SSH or find APs in ARP, but associated to WLC & has clients

    Hi All,
I have an interesting problem. I have a Cisco 2504 WLC, and six Access Points that are associated to it.  I can reach 4 of the access points, which are connected to Cisco 300 POE switches, but the other 2 I cannot ping, telnet, SSH or find in the ARP table on the network.  However, they are both associated to the WLC and as far as I can tell, they have clients associated to them.  If I reboot them from the WLC, they find their way back to the correct WLC, and the WLC sees them in CDP, but I still can't access them in any way.
The two problem APs appear to be connected to ports 3 & 4 on the WLC, which are the POE ports. I read some documentation that says that those ports don't support Access Points but basically that you can still connect them and have it work, but don't expect any help from Cisco if you run into problems.  I've confirmed that POE is being supplied in the port configs, and I have other sites with WLC's that are configured identically with APs on ports 3 & 4 that are up and not having any issues.
Wondering if anyone has had similar issues and if so, can you shed any light on this strange behavior?
    Thanks.

    please

  • Can I use ASA to be a DHCP Server use in WLC wireless Client

I want to use ASA to be a DHCP Server for Wireless Client not it can't.
I check the debug log in WLC, I confirm the WLC have send the request to ASA.
In the ASA, it don't have any hits in the rule when the WLC send the DHCP relay request.
I have try don't use dhcp relay in WLC but don't success. Anybody have the same case with me? And Is the ASA can't support DHCP relay agent to request to get the IP Addr.
P.S. In the Network Design limitation so I can't use WLC to be DHCP Server.
    Equipment:
    ASA5510
    WLC4402
    How can I fix it.
    Thank you very much

The issue is that the ASA doesn't accept DHCP requests from a relay agent, only broadcast DHCP requests. In the 4.2 version for the controllers there is now an option so you can change the way the controller forwards DHCP requests so that it is sent as a broadcast and not from a relay agent.
