RMAN and split mirror
Hi
About interest of RMAN split mirror backup. Have you one example where RMAN split backup is necessary ?
Regards
Den
With databases growing from gigabytes to terabytes, taking backups to tape from
the production system can overload the system and their completion time can
exceed the backup window. Utilizing a split mirrored solution is becoming more
popular because of higher performance disk to disk snapshot technology. There
are several vendors that have certified their snapshot technology for use with
Oracle databases. The list of Oracle Storage Compatibility Program (OSCP)
snapshot vendors can be found on OTN

Hi all,
Am mainly an Oracle DBA and had just recently return to supporting SAP customers after a 4 year absence of supporting non-SAP customers.
Anyway, I have some question on using Oracle RMAN with SAP databases. Backup softwares are Netbackup and Data Protector.
I managed to get the backup working, that is, there is no issues, Oracle RMAN backup using SAP's brarchive and brbackup works alright. My question is about using an Oracle RMAN catalog. I've read thru several SAP documentation and cannot find one where I can use a RMAN catalog.
Reading from
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d1/43d7cab9a04a409cc46876e36762c2/content.htm
Does that mean I cannot use a RMAN catalog? Had anyone managed to use a RMAN catalog to do the RMAN backup?
*Another question I have is, do I need Netbackup and Data Protector if I want to run RMAN backup to disk via brarchive and brbackup? Does backint requires a SBT library to use RMAN? What I mean is, I want to use RMAN but doing backup to disk instead of to tape which means I don't need the tape library installed, will backint know that this is the case and will not look for the tape library?
Any advise or feedback on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Extracts from http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d1/43d7cab9a04a409cc46876e36762c2/content.htm are as below:
The Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) is an Oracle backup program. You can use it as a command line interface (CLI) or as a graphical user interface (GUI) in the Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM). We support RMAN with the SAP backup tools BRBACKUP and BRARCHIVE.
RMAN uses the System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface to back up to tape devices. We implement SBT using the SAP backup library. External backup tools can implement this interface as a dynamic link library (DLL).
Integration
By integrating RMAN into BRBACKUP, you can add security and flexibility to important functions in existing backup strategies and tools:
· The recovery catalog is not used. The backup information is stored in the control file. After the backup, the control file is also backed up. In a restore, the control file is restored first, followed by the data files.
· The integration of RMAN into BRBACKUP also guarantees integration into the SAP Structure linkComputing Center Management System (CCMS).
· BRBACKUP tape management functions as previously (that is, as when using the SAP backup library).
· You can still use the BACKINT interface with external tools.
· All previous SAP backup strategies are supported while using RMAN. Nevertheless, RMAN is not supported for standby database backups and split-mirror backups.
· The following components are delivered with the standard Oracle8 installation:
¡ RMAN with the Oracle SBT interface
¡ Backup library and backup tool Networker from Legato
¡ Legatou2019s BACKINT interface implementation (as of Oracle 8.0.5)
The SAP installation also delivers the SAP backup library with BRBACKUP and BRARCHIVE.

This question has been answered by Stefan Koehler. Not sure why the thread is not updated by his response. I am hoping to give him the max points actually.
It was a very good response which is as below:
Subject: Re: Oracle RMAN and SAP Databases
Message: Hello,
> Does that mean I cannot use a RMAN catalog? Had anyone managed to use a RMAN catalog to do the RMAN backup?
Correct - if you are using the BR*Tools and RMAN you are not able to use a RMAN catalog with it.
You can do manual catalog syncs, but the BR*Tools are not supporting a catalog database.
>Does backint requires a SBT library to use RMAN?
Check this documentation (Point "RMAN Backups Without Backup Library"): http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/3f/9d800e1aec11d2b42c00609419997a/content.htm
> Any advise or feedback on this will be very much appreciated.
We are also using RMAN for taking backup of all our oracle database (SAP and non-SAP), but without any BR*Tools.
That is also possible - check sapnote #105047 (Part "50. Recovery Manager (RMAN)").
As you mentioned, that you are a fulltime DBA you should have enough knowledge to use RMAN without BR*Tools.

Can Split Mirror backups be used for RMAN database duplication?
Hi
We running Oracle 11gR2 EE.
We have storage backup procedures in place, which use Split Mirror technology, i.e BCV
We want to use RMAN to duplicate the source DB, using the BCV copy
Is this possible/feasible?
RudiHi
Thanks for the reply.
My intention is not to backup using RMAN from the BCV.Instead I want RMAN to use this BCV as the storage for our reporting DB
I will elaborate further my intended workflow.
Btw,the reporting DB will have a new name and all the SqlNet files will be in place.
Please let me know what you think.
On the target
In the existing production server (source) :
1.Put the DB in backup mode
2.Split the disks
3.End backup
4.Keep record of SCN
4.Register the new backups as datafile copy
On the target server (target)
1.Mount the report DB
2.perform incomplete recovery the report DB until the SCN
3.Open resetlogs
2 issues I'm not sure about :
a.How to I sync the report DB controlfile,so it will "see" the new backup?
b.Do I need a RMAN repository?

PSAPPD1 ONLINE* ONLINEHi again
Please let me know whether we need to put the parameter remote_login_password=exclusive in pfile or spfile
I prefer the spfile, just:
SQL> alter system set remote_login_passwordfile = exclusive scope = spfile;
To grant sysoper to system:
SQL> grant sysoper to system;
And restart the instance.

Split-mirror backup: Attempt to mount unknown instance
Hi experts,
I am backing up the Oracle database of an SAP system online via the split-mirror approach with a BRBACKUP -t online_split command. After having copied all datafiles, BRBACKUP terminates with the following error message (excerpt):
BR0330I Starting and mounting database instance X86/SPLIT ...
BR0278E Command output of '/oracle/X86/102_64/bin/sqlplus':

BR0302E SQLPLUS call for database instance X86/SPLIT failed
BR0332E Start and mount of database instance X86/SPLIT failed
At this point,
- all data files have been copied successfully;
- the control files have been copied;
- a copy of the backup summary .fnd file has been written to the sapbackup directory of both database host and backup host;
- I verified that the tablespaces had been put into backup mode before the split command was executed.
I wonder why BRBACKUP is trying to mount an instance "X86/SPLIT" that is not defined in tnsnames.ora?
What is the function of this step, and how can I suppress it as this flags the entry of the backup run in DB12 as failed?
OS version: Solaris 10 x64 (database and backup host)
Database: Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
SAP Kernel: 700
BRTOOLS Version: 7.00 (34)
Best regards,
RainerMichael,
the command
more /oracle/X86/.dbenv.sh | grep X86/SPLIT
did not return any matching line. I tried with .dbenv.sh, .dbenv.csh, .dbenv_<db_hostname>.sh, .dbenv_<db_hostname>.csh.

Restoration of backup done using Split-Mirror Disk in SAP
Hi,
I need to the DR activity tomorrow.
Its an Oracle database. We are doing the Split-Mirror backup of Prod. db on QA server.
I need to do the restore part. From where the restore script need to be given QA or Prod.
What are the changes I need to do in the util file for the restore to work.
Regards
Amit.Ashok,
HDS has in there own lab was able to use shadow image to create a copy of the ASM disk and present it to another server. HDS has not worked with Oracle to produce a Certified copy of the process. If you look on the ASM page you will see Netapp and EMC are just a few that have been Certified. I also have put ask HDS to work with oracle to allow us to use this feature.

SAP-compliant Split Mirror Backup
IHAC with an SAP deployment on Solaris Containers; hence I cannot use the EMC "cookbook" for SAP backups with EMC Replication Manager, since RM (and EMC in general) has limited support for Solaris containers. Consequently, I am scripting the synch/split/mount integration with BRBACKUP.
My question is, does a file-based backup of the mirrors (in this case, EMC Business Continuance Voumes - BCVs) suffice for an SAP-compliant split mirror backup, or must the database replicas be mounted and started on the mount host(s)? Moreover, are there any special considerations if the production host is a Solaris container? With Exchange Server for instance, an integrity check is performed on the BCVs to meet Microsoft backup compliance. However, I have reviewed many SAP split mirror documents, and I do not see this expressly stated as a requirement.
Regards,
MikeCI have only seen split mirror backups on HP-UX with XP-frames. So i cannot say anything specific about the Solaris/EMC. But there we only do file backups, even for online backups. Like this:
- set the database in backup mode
- split the disks and mount the filesystems (on the backup server), end backup
- backup the files
- umount the filesystems, resync the disks
Offline backups work more or less the same, but instead of backup mode, you shutdown the database. The only time we might start an instance on the split side is, when we do a restore test with recovery.
Cheers Michael -
We are going to use Timefinder to backup our databases. We plan to split the BCVs and then mount them on another host to do the backup. I do not want to start a database on this new host. We will be using OMNIBACK as the tape management system. Is there a way that I can get these backups registered with RMAN?
I guess you should configure this instance in rman as if it was a cold backup, what I'd do is to atach the bcv's in a second host and in this secundary host send the backup to tape with rman, and in the second host you'd do he backup as a cold backup. I'm using networker for the backup of bcv's but without rman, I do the backup only as closed files.
Hope this helps.

RA VPN on ASA and Split Tunneling
Hello Forum,
I'm having an issue with RA VPN and split tunneling. Our company doesn't allow split tunneling.
I have the following....
ASA 5520 - ASA Version - 8.0(3)
Group Policies defined for different groups. My test group, I thought I disabled split tunneling but they are still able to surf the net.
For Split Tunneling Policy...
Inherit is unchecked
I have "Tunnel Network List Below"
Testing_splitTunnelAcl is my acl. I have a bunch of host IPs in the list. I don't have any or 0.0.0.0 in the list.
But they can still surf the net.
I would like to block access to net. No hairpinning or internet u-turns.
How do I do this?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards,What does your Testing_spliTunnelAcl have?
To disable split tunneling, your Testing_spliTunnelAcl should only have this...
access-list Testing_splitTunnelAcl standard permit any
...which means all traffic will be encrypted and will be sent to ASA no matter what. If you add any IP Address, only those traffic destined to the IP Address in the list will be encrypted and send to ASA, everything else will go to internet from the client.
It may be confusing but try and see what happens. -
I want to connect my IMAC to TV with HDMI cable. I did it before going to Dispaly and Arrangments and then mirror. Now when I go to display I dont have to option of arrangements. Olny {Display and Color} pops up. Any ideas what happend to arrengements?
For the "Arangements" option to appear, the external display must be turned on with the correct input selected and connected to the computer. Then close system prefs, reopen, go to "Display" and "Arrangement" will be along the top.

Hi, when I upload music into itunes from a cd it sometimes appears in itunes as two different albums and split up the music in 2 or even three albums....how can i merge these albums...this is particularly true when one album may have different composers?
Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix things.
For compilations that aren't, select all tracks, Get Info, and on the option tab set Part of a Compilation to No. If it already says No tick the box alongside, then click OK.
For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.

Can i play music and use mirroring function at same time from ipad2 to apple tv
can i play music and use mirroring function at same time from ipad2 to apple tv
Yes, any audio during the "mirroring" funtion will forward to the appletv. This includes all system audio, games, apps, ect. If you slide the mute botton the side of your ipad to mute then you can block app audio and just get Music audio or Pandora if you are using pandora.

Cross-tenant email and split domains - how to set up?
I've successfully deployed exchange 2010 sp1 in /hosted mode with multi-tenancy and the install is working great. We are running into a problem configuring the send connectors
for inter domain email and split domains. We have several customers wanting to only put a couple of email accounts on the exchange server and have the rest of their email accounts resolve to a pop server at an external location. Currently I have a internal
send connector set to relay email between the domains on the server so they can send emails to one another. Directions for this were found at: http://www.zerohoursleep.com/2010/10/step-by-step-starting-with-exchange-2010-sp1-multi-tenant-sending-and-receiving-emails/
I created the connector: new-SendConnector -Name 'TestOrg' -Usage 'Internal' -AddressSpaces 'SMTP:domain1.com;1','SMTP:domain2.com;1' -IsScopedConnector $false -DNSRoutingEnabled $false -SmartHosts '[127.0.0.1]' -SmartHostAuthMechanism 'None' -UseExternalDNSServersEnabled
$false -SourceTransportServers 'Exchange'
I added all my internal domains to the connector listed above and email is able to flow from one domain to another.
My problem is we have a number of customers who need split-domains set up where users who arent on the exchange server are relayed to an external server. Example to route unknown users on a domain to google my send connector looks as is:
New-SendConnector -Name "Internal Relay - domain1.com" -Custom -AddressSpaces "SMTP:domain1.com;5" -SmartHosts aspmx.l.google.com -SourceTransportServers "server"
This results in an internal loop error when sending from one internal domain to another. Sending from an external domain everything is fine. If I remove the "internal" connector listed above the split-domain send connector works perfectly fine delivering locally
and to the external server.
How can I make it so both send connectors work?Hello,
did you solve the problem and how?
Thanks,
Victor

Use Message Mapping to repeat top node and split Message
I am currently using XSLT Messaging to do majority of the mapping. I have two issues that remain, I need to repeat the top node for each or its child elements and split the message.
<Sensor xmlns="namespace">
<Observation>
<XML>Some Data</XML>
</Observation
</Sensor>
1. Can it be done in XSLT? I posted a thread asking for help on this. Where I would need to repeat the Sensor tag for each observation. If this is possible then I will able to split the messages at the HTTP adapter used for the target system.
2. Can Message Mapping be used. Using the same xsd on both source and target systems, Will sensor repeat if set to 1:n and observation set to 1:1. In source it is Sensor 1:1, Observation 1:n. If this works then I can use a BPM to shoot out individual messages using a for each.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to XI as this is my first major project. ThanksSource File Target File

i work with Numbers on my MiniMac and then save the files as Excel because the university only works with Windows.
Numbers is not an Excel clone. Importing and exporting between Numbers and Excel will eventually build up glitches.
If the university only works with 'Windoze' it might be better if you use Excel or a free version of Office (for example, Libre Office or Open Office).
If your marks depend upon a professor who uses Excel, go with the flow.
