RMAN backup testing using networker and NMO

I want to do some RMAN backup testing using networker 7.5 and NMO 5.0. I am doing these testing on VMware. I am not sure whether I need to buy some tape drive for my home PC to do backup testing or I can mimic hard drive as tape drive in VMWARE.
Do you have any idea? any suggestion please?
Thanks..

I think this is not a RMAN/Oracle issue, as soon as you configure networker MML it's up to networker to define the real backup destination behind. Maybe networker has also a 'fake' tape destination,but I don't know this. There's a networker forum:

  • Can rman backups be used to restore to a different server

    We are using R12 with 10gr2 database
    If i take Rman backups, can they be used to restore on some other test server for cloning and bringing that test server upto date like the production.
    I am confues and dont know and This is the only reason i dont use rman for backups, instead take cold backups manually every night as they are used every week to clone some other server for testing purpose
    Please advice
    Thanks

    Hi..
    1. Copy the pfile to the new server.
    2. startup nomount the database using the pfile.
    3. Open a new RMAN session and connect to this database
    4. Restore the controlfile, this will bring the database in mount stage
    5. Once step 4 is completed, restore and recover the database.
    NOTE:-- These are the steps for restoring the database when the RMAN backup pieces are copied to the same location as they are on the main server.If you copy the rman backup to some different location, then you will have to use the CATALOG BACKUPPIECE 'location' command before restoring the database.

  • RMAN backup goes to filesystem and not to ASM diskgroup

    Hi,
    DB: 11.2.0.1
    OS: Linux
    Parameter configured in database:
    SQL> show parameter db_recovery_file_dest
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    db_recovery_file_dest string +BACKUP
    db_recovery_file_dest_size big integer 10184M
    If i execute the command " RMAN> backup database; " , then the backup ( backup pieces) is going to +BACKUP destination and this is as expected.
    But, if i execute the same command using script, then the backup pieces are going to filesystem(default location $ORACLE_HOME/dbs ).
    Could you suggest me(if i understood wrongly), why the backup pieces are going to the location of filesystem , and not to the ASM diskgroup ?.
    I want to take the backup to ASM diskgroup, because of less space at filesystem.
    The script i used is this:
    [oracle@rac1 rmanscripts]$ more online.sh
    export ORACLE_SID=test;
    export NLS_DATE_FORMAT='dd/mm/yy hh24:mi:ss';
    umask 022

    [oracle@rac1 rmanscripts]$ more online.rcv
    run {
    backup
    full
    tag b_db_full_test
    filesperset 2
    format 'df_%d_%t_%s_%p'

  • RMAN backup fails using OEM with no output error

    I am trying to do a weekly automatic full backup of a database in noarchivelog mode using RMAN in Enterprise Manager. Every time I submit the backup job (even if I try to do an immediate backup) the job fails almost immediately. When I Iook at the job output for the failed attempt, it says that there is no output for the job. I believe I have all of the preferred credentials and priveleges correct. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be or maybe where I can find an error log for rman to get a better explanation of the error?

  • RMAN backups not using next available volume: uses next unlabeled volume

    Greetings.
    I've noticed that sometimes (haven't zeroed in on when yet) when RMAN backs up using OSB, the first tape in the library, an RMAN volume, is grabbed and backed up to.
    There are about 10 other RMAN-labeled volumes right below that first one. But RMAN will take an unlabeled volume further down in the library, label it as an RMAN volume, and proceed to back up to it.
    This is happening often enough where my library is filling up with partially used RMAN volumes.
    Three jobs (that I can see so far) are cron jobs calling an RMAN script. I'm looking for the other jobs which, I think, are run via OEM.
    Any thoughts?

  • RMAN Backup to external network/drive on Windows environment

    Hello, I have been searching quite a while in many different documents, but I still haven't found a clear understanding on the following subject:
    Is it possible to have in a Windows environment a backup strategy which writes these backups to an external network/drive? As for example:
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '\\ext_server_name\backups\%d_ora_df%t_s%s_p%p';
    I am aware that this type of backup functions under Unix and Linux environments, nevertheless I would like to do this also under Windows.
    Is there a possible way of doing this? And if there it is how can I achieve this, or where can I read about doing this in this way?
    Thanks for your help. I hope this information is sufficient for you?

    ORA-12631 / TNS-12631, "Username retrieval failed"
    *Cause: The authentication service failed to retrieve the name of a user.
    *Action: Enable tracing to determine which routine is failing.
    Possible causes:
    Problem: Cannot read key table. The key table that has been extracted must be readable by the user the oracle server process runs as.
    Action: On a UNIX system, check the file permissions with ls -l and use chmod as appropriate. This can also be an issue on Windows NT with an NTFS file system. Use the file explorer and change the security setting for the file as needed.

  • Use-network and history management

    Hi everyone
    I'm currently working on an application with Flex Builder 2
    and as i was trying
    to run it locally i noticed a strange behavior.
    When i use the option -use-network=false my application works
    nicely on my
    computer except for my control bar : whenever i click on a
    link in the linkbar the
    history.htm page opens for no reason, and the back and
    forward buttons of my
    browser don't work anymore either.
    It's not a atrocious dilemna but it tickles me though, so if
    you have any idea
    where that could come from please tell me.
    Best regards.

    I think we tried contacting that company from the UK but the pricing and monthly payments were really out on our budget. We've tried the Leopards Parental Controls server based where you need to setup OD and control the computer/accounts using WGM but it does not meet our needs for example we want a specific site be access on a specific time.
    Is there like an software emulator of any hardware/network management device on (OS X) leopard?

  • Rman Backup Over The Network

    Hello to EveryOne,
    My Oracle Database is on Windows 2003 server.
    I m taking the backup of database from its Standby with RMAN
    and stored it on standby server site
    but now i want to do the blockrecover of datafile in production DB.
    May I recover it over the network on production site from standby storage
    If yes plz Tell me how i can do it
    Thanx

    Look, when you ask a question, you always specify all applicable information upfront, so people don't have to tear it out of you.
    I know for a fact most DBAs posting here exactly want to do nothing at all (except for sitting with their shoed feet on their desk waiting until the replies come in)
    and invariably end their posts with grammatically incomplete and incorrect sentences like
    'what will be possible cause'
    mimicking the English of the owner of the Quick-E mart in the long-running cartoon series 'The Simpsons'
    For RMAN and Samba there is note 557057.1 on Metaclick, and if you have no access to Metaclick, I'm sorry.
    So far, I have been misused to look up information you could have looked up easily. Just because you are too lazy.

    Try this ...
    RUN {
    RECOVER COPY OF DATABASE WITH TAG 'incr_backup' UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE - 7';
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 FOR RECOVER OF COPY WITH TAG 'incr_backup' DATABASE;
    The RECOVER COPY... line will not do anything until the script has been running for more than 7 days. The BACKUP INCREMENTAL line will perform a complete backup (level 0) the first day it is run, with all subsequent backups being level 1 incremental backups. After 7 days, the RECOVER COPY... line will start to take effect, merging all incremental backups older than 7 days into the level 0 backup, effectively moving the level 0 backup forward. The effect of this is that you will permanently have a 7 day recovery window with a 7 day old level 0 backup and 6 level 1 incremental backups. Notice that the tag must be used to identify which incremental backups apply to which image copies

  • Generate RMAN backup Script using unix shell script

    Hello,
    Could somebody give me a unix shell script that would generate RMAN script based on some user defined parameters in a config file.
    e.g.
    rman.conf
    CHANNELS=4
    USE_CATALOG=Y
    DEVICE='sbt_tabe'
    etc.,
    many thanks,
    kam

    You can actually encapsulate the RMAN commands inside the shell script.
    However if you really want to create a seperate RMAN script file, you can use the unix shell's "echo" command to write set variables to a file.
    Thus, for example,
    echo "rman target / catalog rman/rmanpassword@crcat" > RMAN_Script.rmn
    echo "backup database plus archivelog" >> RMAN_Script.rmn
    echo "backup archivelog all" >> RMAN_Script.rmn
    creates RMAN_Script.rmn with 3 commands.

  • Backup when using MacHD and and External Drive

    Hi
    I was just reading your discussion group on back up. It appears that one can use the "restore" feature on the disk utilities program of Mac Os - to my understanding this will create a mirror image, or you can use a scheduled back up program, such as Super Duper. Does a program like this do a straight back up or synchronise only the changed files to the destination volume
    Previously I used a shareware program called syncback on the PC - you could run multiple different shedules and back up formulas. Do you know of any good shareware programs that exist for the mac for backing up?
    I have a mac book pro, and a 150GB ext drive where i keep photo's and music. Ideall I would like to be able to back up these to another ext drive.
    Does anyone know about backing up external drives to other external drives, is this possible, or does one have to copy the files first to the lap top hard drive?
    thanks for the advice
    bishan

    Hi Bishan,
    There are lots of backup utilities. A few trusted ones are EMC Retrospect (It is the high priced spread and also a bit too complicated for my tastes). My preference as you mention, SuperDuper and LaCie's SilverKeeper (Free), and Carbon Copy Cloner
    The one you mention SD is the one I use. It's simple to use and 100% reliable for me after a year of daily use. I have it setup to backup nightly to 2 external hard drives with a bi-monthly rotation. Yes, it only backs files that have changed since the last backup, if you choose that option, I do. Read the documentation.
    Yes, you can back up from hard drive to hard drive without going through the internal.
    Post back with any other questions you may have.

  • Backup procedure using RMAN for 11i Instance

    Hi,
    we have 11.5.10.2 instance
    Node 1 = Application Tier ( 11.5.10.2)
    Node 2 = DB Tier ( 9.2.0.7)
    as of now, we are taking daily cold backup of both instances.
    we want to implement RMAN online backup for DB and take cold backup every week end only.
    so, what are the best procedures for implementing RMAN for 11i Database.
    Please share your experience, if you have anybody implemented?
    which one you prefer in RMAN backup ( backupsets or copy option or backupsets with compressed option) interms of performance.. our db size is 60 GB only.
    we apply apps tier patches very rarely . so we want to take RMAN online backup for DB daily and take cold backup for entire apps and db in the week ends.

    Hi,
    This time, i am going to implement for Oracle 11i Database. thats why, i need you guys advice regarding 11i Database.Well, the same is applicable to 11i/R12 databases. You just need to configure RMAN the same way you configure it on any standalone database.
    If you have implemented any where RMAN, can you share, how you are taking RMAN backup? I can share the scripts we use for backup using RMAN. If you are interested, let me know and I shall send it by email.
    if we want to clone, are you cloning the TEST instance with RMAN backup or using cold backup.We use both, depends on the time frame of the cloning task and whether it is possible to use cold backup for cloning or not.
    Please have a look at the following notes, it should be helpful.
