RMAN BACKUP TO FLASH AREA
Good Morning,
Here is a question I am not sure what the answer is. My intuition tells me
though that it may just work.
We have several databases from 8.1.7 to 10g and we want to decrease our
recovery time using the 10g which has the flashback feature. I was thinking of setting
up a flashback farm on a separate disk for all the databases including the 8.1.7 but am not
sure if the flash back feature will include the 8.1.7 unit even though it
would be registered in the catalog of rman that controls everything. My
only alternative is to upgrade the 8.1.7 database to 10g.
Has anyone have any experience with this situation?
Anyone have any ideas on this? Your help or suggestions would be appreciated on this
matter.
This same question appears in RMAN thread but no one had answered.
Thanks in advance.

Good Morning Eric,
After some further thought on this subject going home this past evening, I came to the some what same conclusion. I didn't think about the space that you mentioned though, that you can store the information in the flash area but would be unable to use the 10g feature. Still, after all is said and done we will probably just keep it in a separate catalog and not 'gum up the works' sort to speak.
I just want to thank all who responded for their time.
regards,

RMAN backups and Flash Recovery Area
I have Oracle database 10.2.0.4 running on red hat 4.5 box. We are using a recovery catalog.A backup script runs everyday with option keep forever logs and retention policy is set to redendency 2.
We have Flash recovery area.
What will be criteria for Flash recovery area files to become obsolete?
ThanksIs that mean that files in FRA are not effected by keep clause?
To be more specific Files which status is unavailable with RMAN are they eligible for automatic deletion policy in FRA?

Manually check the rman backup output
Can anybody guide me how to manually check the rman backup output,
There are like 300+ DBs and we are using recovery catalog .....
Plz send me some example to do that....like i have to check list, report or rman logs?1) set environment variable
$ export NLS_DATE_FORMAT='DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS'
RMAN> connect target * connect catalog *
RMAN> list backup summary;
RMAN> list backup of database completed between "to_date('2007-12-20 03:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:
SS')" and "to_date('2007-12-20 06:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')";
My manager ask me to check rman backup report manually & this is what i am forwarding him that i will check , let me know if its not right........ -

Rman backup : what are the preconditions if any...?
hello all,
I have the following script for executing an rman backup in Unix server :
rman target=sys/change_on_install nocatalog <<EOF
RUN
allocate channel c1 type disk format '/orabackup/rman/b_%u_%s_%p';
allocate channel c2 type disk format '/orabackup/rman/b_%u_%s_%p';
allocate channel c3 type disk format '/orabackup/rman/b_%u_%s_%p';
set limit channel c1 kbytes 400000;
set limit channel c2 kbytes 400000;
set limit channel c3 kbytes 400000;
sql 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
backup incremental level 0 database;
backup archivelog all delete input;
copy current controlfile to '/orabackup/rman/contrl01.bak';
release channel c1;
release channel c2;
release channel c3;
Can any one tell me what are the preconditions/precautions if any to be taken before executing the above script such as whether the database should be open or mounted etc.
thanks in advance
thomaskprakashdatabase should be open or mounted etc.Definately you would be taking online backups, therefore, database up and running.
Database must be in archivelog mode.

RMAN backups are slow with TSM
Hi,
I encountered a problem using RMAN with TSM to backup a database. It seems that the RMAN channel doesn't use the entire bandwidth to the TSM (or whatever) and is idle most of the time. This makes the database backup really slow.
As a comparison, we backup also filesystem and SQL Server, they both use very few channels and each channel backup about X5 more data per second than Oracle. For example, SQL Server uses 5 channels to the TSM, and we get a total of around 100MB/s. When we configure Oracle to backup using 5 channels we get about 20MB/s and we see that the SQL Server is writing to the TSM all the time while Oracle is idle a large portion of the time.
Any ideas? Known configuration issues?
I hope I'm clear about the problem.
Thanks,
LironHi,
Thanks for everybody for your responses, I'll try to sum the answers here:
1. Yes, we backup the filesystem, and everything works fine. The problem is only with RMAN backups
2. Resources are not an issue, it happens on strong and weak servers (and several O/S as well)
3. Database versions are not the issue, it happens on 10.2 as well as 11.2
My feeling is that this has something to do with the integration, either oracle setting or TSM setting, but I can't be sure until I solve this.
For those of you who backup with TSM, did you notice that filesystem / SQL Servers are being backed up faster? Did you check the Oracle wait events and TSM status while you run the backup?
Thanks
BTW Girish, great comment, I wish I had all the answers... :) -
Does RMAN backups are OS independent.
Can I use RMAN backup of windows based oracle to construct solaris based oracle db.
Thanks
NaveenCan I use RMAN backup of windows based oracle to construct solaris based oracle db.As Justin has already said, by default NO. To use rman for closs platform migration you will have to check the ENDIAN format of the both the platforms since, the principal restriction on cross-platform transportable database is that the source and destination platform must share the same endian format.
An example of Cross-Platform Migration Using Rman ( Windows 32-bit to Linux 32-bit ) is on metalink.You can check it out

Edited by: user11981514 on Aug 6, 2010 9:46 AMHi,
Since the error ORA-19809 indicates the lack of space in flash recovery area during the media recovery, I suggested increasing the value of the parameter DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE.
Yes, during the media recovery the RMAN will restore the archived log to the default destination (only if the required archived logs are not already on the disks).You can confirm the restore location of the archived log in RMAN restore log/destination specified by parameters log_archive_dest_1/db_recovery_file_dest.

Trace dumps when performing RMAN backups
Hi,

I'm not very experinced with oracle 10g, but on 9i I've never seen this before:
Every time i do a RMAN backup errors is written in the alert log pointing to the instances' trace file in the udump dir.

to me it looks only informational, but i was wondering if anyone been experiencing similar behavior before, and if there are a way to avoid this? or is this an error i should take action on.
any ideas would be very much appricated!This is a known bug # 4596065 with RMAN when controlfile autobackup is on and flash recovery area is enabled. Workaround is to ignore the trce files.

How to set the Rman backup parameter.
Hi,
Can U guide me how to set the Rman backup path,control file auto backup & others parameter.Hi,
Go through this,
Show all configurable settings:
RMAN>SHOW ALL;
Write disk backups to the /rmanback directory: (%U will be replaced with unique filenames)
RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/rmanback/%U';
Backup using a flash recovery area rather than disk
RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT CLEAR;
Configure RMAN to back up the control file after each backup
RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
By default, RMAN automatically names control file backups and stores them in the flashrecovery area.
To configure RMAN to write control file backups to the /backup directory:( %F will generate a unique filename)
RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/backup/controlfile%F';
Ensure that RMAN retains all backups needed to recover the database to any point in time in the last 7 days:
RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
Retain three backups of each datafile:
RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;
Delete backups no longer required by the retention policy:
RMAN> DELETE OBSOLETE;
To override the configured retention policy for individual backups - use BACKUP.. KEEP (or CHANGE.. KEEP)
Configure backups to run in parallel by assigning two sbt channels:
RMAN> CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE sbt PARALLELISM 2;
Reset any CONFIGURE setting to its default by running the command with the CLEAR option
RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt CLEAR;
RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY CLEAR;

Flash Area is 80% filled
Hi All
Today morning we have upgraded one productions database from 9.2.0.7 to 10.2.0.4 on solaris 64 bit and configured the flashback area
suddenly the flash area has been grown to 80% can any one please tell me how to reduce this flash area size .
If i take the rman backup is it going to be reduced?? or i have do some other steps
Flash back Mount point size is 25G
Flash area size give is 23G
now it is 80% full
Retention is 1440
KKHi Jean,
Thank you for your reply
I have removed some the archivelogs manually to freeup the space
and i have executed your commands but still it is throwing some errors in alert log.

Archivelog files and Rman backup
Hi all,
Please somebody guide me regarding the following concept.
We have the oracle server version 10.2.0.1.0, working with Windows OS,
I had set the parameter log_archive_dest_1 for locating archivelog files, then I had changed the archivelog files to the flash recovery area(located in another disk) by using the parameters db_recovery_file_dest_size and db_recovery_file_dest.
Now the archivelog files are being located at two different location. At this point, If I take backup for archivelog files with the aid of RMAN, then ,
How will the RMAN take backup from those two different locations?
Thanks&Regards,
Jai.PROBLEM :
I have archivelogs duplexed - when running RMAN - rman backups up the archivelogs from both duplexed destinations - from the user manual - this should not be the case, any ideas?
Details:
I have archivelogs duplexed
I have the following set in rman :
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 2 DAYS;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/backup/rman/WPPMD/control_%F';
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARALLELISM 10 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/backup/rman/WPPMD/backup_%d_%T_%U' MAXPIECESIZE 10 G;
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE COMPRESSION ALGORITHM 'LOW' AS OF RELEASE 'DEFAULT' OPTIMIZE FOR LOAD TRUE;
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO BACKED UP 1 TIMES TO DISK;
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/snapcf_WPPMD.f'; # default
When I run backups via a script :
backup incremental level=$RMAN_LEVEL database plus archivelog;
($RMAN_LEVEL changes between 0 and 1 depending on the day of the week)
It backs both duplex copies of the same archivelog
From the document :
Oracle10g / 11g - Getting Started with Recovery Manager (RMAN) [ID 360416.1]
It says :
Even if your redo logs are being archived to multiple destinations and you use RMAN to back up archived redo logs,
RMAN selects only one copy of the archived redo log file to include in the backup set. (Since logs with the same log sequence number are identical, there is no need to include more than one copy.)
But this is not the case ie
RMAN> list archivelog sequence 2445;
using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
List of Archived Log Copies for database with db_unique_name WPPMD
=====================================================================
Key Thrd Seq S Low Time
4640 1 2445 A 17-DEC-10

Name: /log/recovery_area/WPPMD/archivelog/2010_12_17/o1_mf_1_2445_6jpx9n7c_.arc
So it still backing up both copies of the archive log.
Any ideas? is this a bug?
Thanks

How to move rman backups on tap from disk
Hi,
I have rman backup files on the disk, now how we can move these files to tap. is there any rman command or is there any script to move.
Thank you!Do you use FRA (Flash recovery area)?
If you use FRA then configure RMAN to take backup to tape. And backup fra to tape.
RUN
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 TYPE ‘SBT_TAPE’;
BACKUP RECOVERY AREA;
RELEASE CHANNEL ch0;
If you don't use FRA then you can backup your backupsets which are on the disk to tape.

Each Week or month We have to deploy a patch on Our Database which are kind of sql changes to Database and before we applying we need to backup our Database.
I am very comfortable while applying patches on Single instance Database:-
I Usually shutdown my database and backing up My Database(Conistent\cold Backup) before applying patch.
and I have a Flash back on both option I am having for my Database.
Problem:-
But in Production I have RAC Database, on which I already configured Hot Backup.
FlashBackup Feature is there with me, but Not reliable.
I want cold backup along with my existing hot backup, and want to restore same if something goes wrong.
Since ASM is configured so we have only option RMAN backup.
IF possible kindly Share your knowledge and Experience of your to handle Such Problem.Sir,
RMAN is already configured for backing up database online.
My only intention is to have cold or consistent backup before applying application patch, So that at the time of crisis I will resotre my Cold/Conistent backup.
Because I am using 11gr2 RAC with ASM, so only option is there for me to use rman as backup tool.
But I never tried to Have Cold backup in RAC environment in my previous jobs, and I am new to this Oracle APPS DBA technology. So Here I am looking for a Strategy that Normally oracle apps dba use while applying patch to Oracle Database and kind of backup strategy they use.
Regards
Gaurav
