RMAN Integration with Tap drive

Dear All,
Can any body help me how to integrate RMAN with tap on HP-Unix.
Regards,

To intergrate with RMAN, you should review the install instructions of whichever 3rd party backup software you are using. After you have the software integrated, you can refer to Configuring RMAN to Make Backups to a Media Manager.

  • Sys-suspend fails on Solaris 9 with tape drive present

    I replaced my Solaris 7 SS5 with an Ultra 2 and installed Solaris 9 fresh. The external disks and tape drive are unchanged. The SS5 used to suspend properly about 95% of the time, but now the machine refuses to suspend with the tape drive connected. Log messages are:

    Mar 21 16:20:30 madera cpr: [ID 583038 kern.notice] System has been resumed.
    and the system is not suspended. Is there anything i am missing on Solaris 9?
    I am able to modunload the st driver, then when I attempt to suspend, the driver gets reloaded, and I get the failure above.
    I ran across an E10000 service manual from 2.6 days that said that tape devices were not suspendable. They must have rethought that by Solaris 7. No idea why 9 should refuse this. I have the latest recommended patches.
    TIA for any information!

  • RMAN integrated with Tivoli Storage Manager

    Environment
    ===========
    Two Node RAC Production DBs on 10.2.0.4
    Platform : Solaris
    RMAN is the only backup tool i've ever worked with. I've come across OTN articles which discuss TSM along with RMAN. Is there any advantage at all in using TSM with RMAN ? Or, Is it just marketing gimmick by IBM?

    Our strategy:
    1--Monday ------------------->Level 0 backup  (1:00am)
    2--Tuesday----->     Level1
    3--Wednesday----->     Level1
    4--Thursday------------------>Level 0 backup  (1:00am)
    5--Friday----->     Level1
    6--Saturday----->     Level1
    0--Sunday ----->     Level1Our RMAN backup pieces got to an NFS mount . Every monday morning the Level 0 backup is copied to Tape by Sysadmins and kept for 3 months. So, where does Tivoli storage manager come into picture ? Does TSM do copying the backup pieces from Disk to Tape part ?

  • Tape Drive Upgrade

    I'm running a SunFire v440 with a IBM 3584 tape library. Solaris 9 is the OS and Veritas NetBackup 5.1 is the App. Currently the IBM 3584 has LTO-2 drives in it and the backup team wants to upgrade to LTO-3 drives. They are planning on using the same WWN's thinking this will make the transition easier. I've never worked with tape drives before and need to know if this is valid.
    Also, to get the drives visable to Netbackup does anything have to be done at the OS level? I've reviewed the sg.conf file and don't see anything that stands out but my knowledge of this is limited.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    After changing the drives (if they are fiber native) the WWNs will change since each fiber device has a unique WWN like a MAC. (remember zoning on the fiber switch also needs to be done to accommodate the new hardware.)
    It is best to 1st unconfigure the old devices:
    cfgadm al will display the information you require to see where the drives bind to c(#)
    run cfgadm c unconfigure c(#) to remove the old tape drives from the configuration.
    Now run the clean-up devfsadm C
    Replace the drives with the LTO-3 units and zone the switch accordingly unless you use a switch that makes use of VSAN.
    Reboot tape library
    Run the configuration cfgadm c configure c(#) you might need to do a force update in some cases: cfgadm c configure o force_update c(#)
    List the devices cfgadm al
    If all is well up to this point you are set from the OS side.
    You will need to reconfigure the storage devices in Netbackup since the serial numbers of the drives are now different.
    Make sure you follow the guidelines for adding the correct values for LTO3 to the two files listed below to make sure your drives perform at their peak.
    /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS
    /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I connect a DLT-IV Tape drive with SCSI interface to Quad G5?

    I have had no problems with my "Quantum equivalent La Cie DLT-IV Tape drive" on OSX connected to the G4 Quicksilver using an Adaptec 2930CU PCI card - but I can't move that to the G5 as it has to be PCI-Express cards as far as I can tell.
    Adaptec pre-sales support inform me that Adaptec have no Mac support in their current product range.
    Has anyone found a solution to this connection requirement that will work with Retrospect and DVD StudioPro?
    If there is a workable solution which is no longer available to buy - I would still be interested in knowing so I could scour ebay for it.
    TIA,
    Richard

    Hi Richard;
    If you go to ATTO, they are offering a ExpressPCI PSC which include a SCSI bus on sale for $24.11.

  • Tape drive  and pci-x card  with Solaris 10 on  VMWare environment

    I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
    The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
    I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
    -     Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
    -     In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
    I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
    However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

    Actually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

    I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
    Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

    That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
    For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
    Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
    Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
    Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
    so lets be a little conservative and try
    dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
    When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
    and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
    Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.

  • Backup strategy with no tape drives/library

    Hi, I am new into the job of sys admin, so we recently setup a system with running solaris 10 and with its storage as a NetApp, but we do not have yet a library or tape drive attached to it.
    So how can I approach this problem? Can I setup a LUN on NetApp and copy all important stuff to that LUN?
    FR

    For the oracle backup, oracle should have comands to dump or export the database to a file, and that file could be backed up. Alternately, there are problably options to put the database in read-only mode, so that you can back up the database files without worrying that they will be changed during the backup.
    For other files, if you are using zfs snapshots, you could back up the zfs snapshots even if the original file is still open.
    You might also want to look at the rysnc command- that should let you back up only files that have differ between the source and destination (i.e. you could do differential backups.) So maybe you could a monthly full backup with tar to NAS or SAN, a weekly rsync incremental backup, and daily zfs snapshot that is kept for a week.

  • Disk V$ Tape Drive for Rman

    Hi,
    Os : Aix,Red hat 4.2
    Db : 10
    We taking rman backup which stores in Tape Drive.(It took 11 hours, incremental 0 level).due to ORA-27030 & ORA-19511,we couldn't use Tape drive temporarliy.
    So we used disk for rman backup.(It took 4 hours to complete).
    Which is best storage(ie fastest) for rman backup /restoration whether DISK or TAPE?
    What are the factors determine it?
    Thanks & regards,
    VN

    What is more important to you, then choose. It's simple: tape is more reliable and faster drives. At a cost of not very high volumes, they are about the same per megabyte. It - http://www.allbackup.ru/articles/article6.html - is more less actually.

  • Outputting to tape via MacBook with Lacie Drive?

    So this may have been covered but I can't find it so here it goes: The MacBook has only 1 Firewire port. I'm looking for suggestions for outputting to tape when also using a Lacie Drive which occupies the port. Hooking the Lacie up via the USB won't be fast enough right? So this means figuring out an alternate way to lay off to tape from FCPHD. Does this mean rendering the sequence out as .mov file? If so, which codec is going to give it as close to the same resolution as if I was laying off directly from the FCPHD Print to video?

    It depends on the camera npeovideo is using: Canon cameras seem not to like to be daisy chained with LaCie drives... even though mine (Canon MVX4i = Optura 600) works perfectly. But from the other posts in this forum I'm probably an exception.
    So I suggest npeovideo first tries daisy chaining. If it works, OK.
    If it doesn't work, the only solution I can think of is to copy the project media from the LaCie into the internal hard drive (and reconnect it), disconnect the LaCie drive and print to video to the camcorder, directly connected to the Macbook firewire port. Using USB connection for the external drive might lead to dropped frames and loss of quality.
    As an alternative, in order to reduce the need for internal disk space, and in case npeovideo edited a short movie out of an originally long raw movie, he could: a. Export > Quicktime Movie, self contained, (not: Using QuickTime Conversion) to the internal disk drive, b. create a new FCE project where you import that movie into a new sequence, and c. without any further editing, just print to video that sequence (after disconnecting the LaCie drive as above).
    I hope some of this may solve the problem.

    Thank

    Why in the world would a person use 2 soundcards makes no sense to me .Onboard sound is crap i have never liked it ......,boards should come empty no network? card or audio because that crap they use on the motherboard is a crap . I have all that crap on my board disabled because i have a fibre home network . I see no use for copper either the cable companys should all go fibre they don't want the initial cost because they are cheap .Fibre will last alot longer than copper .We arein the year 2009 not the 70's come on .

  • How to duplex archivelog with just one tape drive ?

    The subject explains everything.
    My company has just one tape drive, however I'm afraid to lose the only tape that contains just 1 copy of archivelog.
    I've my own scripts to try simulate duplexing, but I'd like to know if someone has a problem like me and what do you do to workaround it.
    Thank you very much
    Marcelo Sinni

    Yes, I do. I've three scripts simulating trying to obtain 3 copies of the same archivelog:
    RMAN> print script ArchiveF1;
    printing stored script: ArchiveF1
    {allocate channel c1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'OB_MEDIA_FAMILY Oradell01-Archives-F1-A';
    sql "alter system archive log stop";
    sql "alter system switch logfile";
    sql "alter system switch logfile";
    backup
    format 'F1_%U.arch'
    (archivelog until time "TRUNC(SYSDATE+1,'DD')" NOT BACKED UP 3 TIMES);
    RMAN> print script ArchiveF2;
    printing stored script: ArchiveF2
    {allocate channel c1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'OB_MEDIA_FAMILY Oradell01-Archives-F2-A';
    backup
    format 'F2_%U.arch'
    (archivelog until time "TRUNC(SYSDATE+1,'DD')" NOT BACKED UP 3 TIMES);
    RMAN> print script ArchiveF3;
    printing stored script: ArchiveF3
    {allocate channel c1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'OB_MEDIA_FAMILY Oradell01-Archives-F3-A';
    backup
    format 'F3_%U.arch'
    (archivelog until time "TRUNC(SYSDATE+1,'DD')" NOT BACKED UP 3 TIMES delete all input);
    sql "alter system archive log start";
    In this script ArchiveF1, I stop ARCH process and afterwards execute two log switch (since I've three redo logs and whereas the DB is in archivelog mode, the third log switch will not happen, so I eliminate the possibility to occur a log switch during archivelog backup thence I have three identical copies of archivelogs in three separated tapes.)
    ArchiveF3 enable archivelog again.
    To me it has worked fine but, I'd like another opinions about that.
    Thanks

  • Ultra 20/25 with SDLT600 tape drive

    Hi,
    I have a customer who requires a Sun desktop with the ability to attach to Sun's SDLT600 tap drive. According to all of the configuration docs and Webdesk, this is not supported with the Ultra 20/25. Does anyone know why or if there are any plans to support this in the near future?

    ... and using the Spectrum SSH, the external SDLT600 peripheral
    shows information on its SCSI interface, and that it is LVD/SE
    One or more of the the adapter cards that were mentioned by Michael would work.
    Though I would have hoped to have seen the X6758A card among the choices.
    Log in to Sunsolve, go to the SSH, then
    Components --> Removable Media (External) --> SDLT600
    You'll be able to see that desktop and/or rackable device.
    Perhaps it's time to call Sun's pre-sales techsupport.
    Those Sun employees would have the best chance to get accurate information for you.
    This is just a public discussion forum; not Sun techsupport.

  • What external tape drives are compatible with sunblade 100s?

    hi,
    please, can anybody tell me:
    1. where i can find out whether or not a particular tape drive is compatible with my sunblade 100 workstation running solaris 9?
    2. do external tape drives usually connect to the workstation's serial port?
    3. what kind of specs/features should i be looking out for?
    thanks in advance for your replies.

    I would imagine you could use any tape drive with your sun blade... most are connected by either scsi or fiber channel... there could be some that are network controlled... not aware of any that are controlled by serial port...
    GOOGLE is a wonderful thing... try it, you will like it...
    compatibility is more concerned with which OS and program you want to use with the tape drive...
    specs depend on what you are backing up... a single user would most likely only need a single drive... if you were a multi-national corp, then maybe you might contact Sun Sales...
    maybe you should to some research yourself...
