RMAN Restoration failed from ASM to non asm
While restoring the database, we are getting this error frequently, updated the media center they said media is intact, but there is some "NO POLICY" NO SCHEDULE" error. what does this mean.
Could some one please help us why and how to resolve this issue. We are stuck in between our restoration.

Error reading backup piece can occur even the handle was corrupt (or) handle was unable to read (or) did tapes loaded in MML ?

How to restore (not duplicate) DB from RAC ASM to non ASM
Hello everybody,
i am trying to recover db from RAC+ASM to non ASM no RAC node. I am running Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4) on Win2003 Server. I have functional backup from my prod system.
Here are my steps:
*1. On prod server i make backup running this script in RMAN*
configure channel device type 'SBT_TAPE' parms'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=e:\backup)';
RUN {
backup device type SBT_TAPE database tag zal20081129;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup device type SBT_TAPE archivelog ALL tag zal20081129;
*2. I prepared clon instance on another server (The same Oracle version) and start it to nomount mode.*
*3. I copied the backup from prod server to clon server to exactly the same path. (e:\backup)*
*4. I connect to RMAN on my new node and I use the DBID parameter and I restore controlfile.*
rman
connect target /
set DBID 3079749916
startup nomount
run {
allocate CHANNEL CTAPE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=f:\backup)';
allocate channel CDISK DEVICE TYPE DISK;
restore controlfile from 'f:\backup\78k91lrn_1_1';
alter database mount;
*5.Then I check the backup, crosscheck etc.*

So obviouslly database wants to open online logs in the path like ASM. Which is wrong. What should I do to tell database to open it according to init.ora parameters
*.db_create_file_dest='e:\oradata\agost'
*.db_create_online_log_dest_1='e:\oradata\agost'
Any suggestions???
ThanksHi,
thanks for you quick answer. But I do restore to the local file system, even if the log says:
restoring datafile 00001 to +DATA/agost/datafile/system.272.668509367
restoring datafile 00002 to +DATA/agost/datafile/undotbs1.273.668509387 .....
all the datafiles are correctly restored. I think oracle uses the parameter db_create_file_dest and creates the files there.
I tried also the script with SET NEW NAME:
run {

There must be way how to recover it. I think my first try (without SET NEWNAME) is closer to the end, there is only need to "repair" the online logs.
Any other suggestions?

Creating Standby Database from ASM Databse none ASM
I have ASM RAC database running on Solaris 10. I want to take a backup with RMAN and move the Backup to none ASM on other Stand alone server. I want to use this none ASM backup database to create Standby Database for Test purpose. Is it doable? If it is doable can you answer following questions?
What command should I use with RMAN to take a full backup and move it to none ASM platform?
Thank youWell, the answer is most likely yes, but first need to confirm
- Do you want a physical or logical standby?
- Will the standby run on the same platform , i.e. also Solaris 10?
- What version of database ? It is much easier in 11g. -
Hi,
Can you please help me in getting steps for EBS cloning from ASM to non ASM in non RAC to RAC environment.What is your application release?

SAN replication from ASM to NON ASM
Hi,
We have a requirement:
PROD Site: 2 RAC nodes on ASM with 11g Rel 2. ASM will be on SAN.
Requirement: For DR Site: create non ASM single database on which SAN from PROD will be replicated. No Data Guard.
Question: Can we do this? Will standalone DB will be able to read all the data files, as on DR Site non ASM DB will be created. What Oracle recommends? Becuase another solution is that we can create some cron tab job and it will aply archive log files after some interval o DR site database.
Regards.You cannot do it with SAN replication, because SAN replication will give you exact replica of the LUN on storage level, so you will need ASM to read it.
You can "simulate" data guard. Restore database backup on standalone database file system (you need to explicitly set the restore destination directory, otherwise rman will try to restore the database on ASM) and apply archivelogs on a schedule. -

RMAN restore fails due to space issue
Hi,
My database size is 225 GB . I m restoring the backupfiles using RMAN from production backup to the test instance.During restore process rman failed due to space issue.When the error occurred rman restored around 122 GB.
Now i increased the free space in server.So now my doubt is i have to delete the restored files (122GB) and start the restore process again or RMAN will automatically skip the the restored file and resume the process from where it was failed ?

Hope this helps,

RMAN restore failing in another environment
Hi,
I am facing a problem. I have to restore a database backup from production to Integration
environment. In Production, it is RAC db and RMAN and Veritas Net backup taking the backups.
In Integration Environment also we have the same setup.
So the steps I have done so far is:
1.Have the export of RMAN catalog schema from production and imported in RMAN server in Integration
Environment.#
2. UNIX admins put and mounts the TAPE in tape library.
3. Set the environment for new db in oratab file.
4. connected to target and RMAN.
5. startup nomount from RMAN.
6.executed the following commands
RMAN> run {
2> allocate channel t1 type sbt;
3> validate backupset 2805233;
4> }

I’ve got the backupset key from RMAN catalog, but it is failing to validate the backup set.
And also all the subsequent attempts to restore spfile/controlfile/database are failing.
Now, I have been advised by Oracle that this is the problem with Media Manager and I have to contact
them, unfortunately I dont have support service from Veritas.
Could any of you guys please advise, do we need to do any other configrations in net back to Identify
the tapes from foreigen envirnment/ do we need to pass any more paramters from RMAN to see the newly
mounted TAPS?
Your help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks and Regards,
ZachZach,
Can you certain tests for me ?
1)
Lets assume some terms here
a) origclient = your target host
b) altclient = your destination host
c)media manager server = host that contains your netbackup master software
Can you goto altclient and first check if your altclient is able to browse the backups generated by the origclient
$NETBACKUP_HOME/bin/bplist -C <origClient> -t 4 -l -R /
2) Have you configured your ORACLE_HOME on the destination to link one of its libraries to the Media Management software ?
goto $ORACLE_HOME/lib
ls -lrt libobk.sl . This file should be a softlink to $NETBACKUP_HOME/bin/libobk.sl64
3) Please use the SEND command in your RMAN restore scripts. You need so specify the NB_ORA_SERV (your media management master server) and NB_ORA_CLIENT (your origclient host)
SEND 'NB_ORA_SERV=<media manager server>, NB_ORA_CLIENT=<origclient>';
4) Make sure your $NETBACKUP_HOME/bp.conf has the required parameters for client and server. client will be your origclient and server will be your media management server that has the netbackup master software -

KrishnaHi,
I totally agree with Mahir. And I just want to share one thing:
Use %U to generate guaranteed unique names :
For backupsets, %U means: %u_%p_%c
For an image copy of a datafile, %U means: data-D-%d_id-%I_TS-%N_FNO-%f_%u
For an image copy of an archived redolog, %U means: arch-D_%d-id-%I_S-%e_T-%h_A-%a_%u
For an image copy of a control file, %U means: cf-D_%d-id-%I_%u

Time Machine Restore fail from Yosemite
Ok, so this issue appears to be multi-faceted so please bear with me as I try to fully explain what's happening.
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8, and I decided to give Yosemite a try since it was free. Before upgrading, I did a Time Machine backup on an external 500GB WD drive in case I wanted to switch back to Snow Leopard.
I did the upgrade, but wasn't very pleased with the results. Seeing as how the computer was older I figured it would slow down a touch, but what broke the deal was when I tried to run After Effects and had plugins - that never gave me trouble before - crashing. I decided to restore from Time Machine and rebooted into Recovery Mode. However, by accident I selected the External Drive with the backups as my boot disk. I quickly rebooted AGAIN and selected the Recovery drive, but the TM drive wasn't showing up when I tried to access it for the backup.
I rebooted back to Yosemite and found that the drive was not mounting despite lighting up and making spinny sounds. Disk Utility could see it but was unable to repair, so I used DiskWarrior instead. Everything seemed to work out ok and the drive was reading on my desktop as a TM backup. I rebooted AGAIN to recovery mode, selected the appropriate backup, and let the computer do it's work overnight.
When I woke up in the morning and checked in on it, I got an error message saying that the restoration had FAILED at some point along the way. I tried to reboot normally, but the grey screen of death would appear after a few seconds and I'd have to shut down.
I went back to Recovery mode, tried to access the TM drive, but once again it was not showing up! So I reinstalled Yosemite and was able to login to my desktop. The TM drive was still showing up, and according to a reinstalled DiskWarrior the drive was fine. I rebooted in Recovery, selected the TM backup, and it only took about 20 minutes before the restoration failed! This time the computer appeared to be wiped clean, with no OS.
Fortunately I still had my Snow Leopard install DVD, so I managed to reinstall it from there. However, now I CANNOT login. My username shows up but the password I've used for FOUR YEARS is constantly rejected. I can't even login to the GUEST account!
If you've made it this far, PLEASE HELP!!!!Boot off the DVD again and under the Utilities menu select Reset password. Boot normally and test.

DB 11.2.0.2 11.2.0.2
Storage ASM NTFS
I have created standby logs on the standby and on the primary. I have configured real time apply(maximum availibility) but when I look in the rfs.trc files on standby I receive the following error:
primary database is in maximum protection or maximum availability mode and the standby database does not contain and viable standby redo logs.
I dropped all standby logs on the standby and recreated them, the real time apply then worked until all the standby redo logs filled. Now I'm receiving the error again.
For some reason the standby logs are not clearing and this is the issue. I have looked at metalink notes Error At Standby Database Ora-16086: Standby Database Does Not Contain Available Standby Log Files [ID 1155773.1] and Primary Database Stops with ORA-16098 When Standby Put in Protected Mode [ID 187235.1].
I think the issue may be that the primary databases online redo logs are on asm disks and the standby are on ntfs disks. I can't find any clear documentation that says that this config is unsupported. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Minimally, the configuration should have one more standby redo log file group than the number of online redo log file groups on the primary database. However, the recommended number of standby redo log file groups is dependent on the number of threads on the primary database. Use the following equation to determine an appropriate number of standby redo log file groups:
(maximum number of logfiles for each thread + 1) * maximum number of threads
Using this equation reduces the likelihood that the primary instance's log writer (LGWR) process will be blocked because a standby redo log file cannot be allocated on the standby database. For example, if the primary database has 2 log files for each thread and 2 threads, then 6 standby redo log file groups are needed on the standby database.
I'm a bit confused by above note does that mean I should create (2+1)*2 =6 standby logs?
Thanks,
keith
