RMAN Restore From External System

I have been asked to restore a database from a different company onto our system.
I was given a CD with the RMAN backup that they took. It's the same Oracle 9i database and we are both on Windows 2003.
I've never done a restore this way before. I would like to overlay an existing database instance that we have so as not to create yet another instance on this box.
The file structure is different from the two boxes, so that is somewhat of a concerns....
Here are my thoughts of how to proceed. Copy RMAN backup files into c:\rman\rmanfull directory. This is where they were on their machine.
Restore control file from backup piece. But not sure if I should restore to where existing control files are to database to be overlain or different location.
Set DBID to RMAN backup database.
Recovery control file from RMAN backup
set newname for all datafiles to where they should be for new database
Recover database.
There should be some documentation on how to do this....I can't believe this is that uncommon. If someone wants to give you their database from the outside world, there must be a way to install it onto your system.
Anyway, that's my idea of how to do it.....Can anyone verify or assist??
Thanks

I think this is the scenario 'Restore and recover a database to a new host'.

I'm a new MAC user and got myself in a mess where i need to perform full backup restore from external hard drive. Last back via time machine to external drive was 2 days ago, so the data is there.
What are the MAC boot commands to get me to system restore options. And there any useful tips you can pass on.

  • Since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists

since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists?

My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • RMAN restore from active database, ASM

I'm attempting to refresh a stage database from a prod database using RMAN restore from active database. Both are on ASM. After working through various hurdles, I've got one issue I'm a bit stuck on. I've got a handful of data files that do NOT have OMF names (ie MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx instead of MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx.351.714779777) and these are failing when I do the restore. The syntax I'm using in RMAN is as follows:
    duplicate target database to dwstage
    from active database
    spfile parameter_value_convert 'dwprod','dwstage'
    SET DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE'
    SET LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE';
The error message I'm getting is this:
RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 04/21/2011 13:26:24
ORA-17628: Oracle error 19505 returned by remote Oracle server
continuing other job steps, job failed will not be re-run
Normally from what I've seen/read this error can be traced back to needing to pre-create the directories for the controlfiles etc, but since 90% of the datafiles copied correctly...
Any suggestions as to a way around this, or am I going to be forced to restore from a backupset?

This fails saying that "ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" which is quite normal given that the listener is havig a handle in BLOCKED state for this AUXDB as it is in NOMOUNT state.
Could you please help me on how to proceed?
One option can be to create the controlfile manually and mount the instance before doing the duplicate. I hope Rman can continue from there.
Another option is to go for backup based duplicate.
Is there any other way to go?
Provide static registration on AUXILIARY side for your auxiliary instance and try again. For example change listener.ora file as
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUXDB)
          (ORACLE_HOME = <your oracle home>)
          (SID_NAME = AUXDB)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <auxiliary host/ip>)(PORT = 1521))
)And restart listener on auxiliary host then try again

  • 2nd drive unformatted and not restored after attempting restore from a system image

I created a system image, which included drive C (where Windows is installed) and drive G (where some installed Windows programs are located).  I then ran into a situation where I wanted to restore from the system image.  With my first attempt,
this process took several days.  When I returned home from work, my computer had booted up into Windows -- drive C had successfully been restored.  I soon found out though that drive G was in an unformatted state.
Now, given the time it took for each drive to restore and the sizes of data for each drive (160gb for C and 1000gb for G), it seemed odd to me that the entire process had completed already, given the time that had passed and the progress indicated for drive
G in the status bar, in the morning before I went to work.  It is entirely possible that one of my cats may have jumped on my desk and somehow cancelled the operation.
    My questions are:
    1. if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, will the 1st disk (C) still be successfully restored?
    2. why does this process take so long?
    3. if there is some other error, is it displayed?  Does system restore automatically reboot after completion/cancellation?  Is there an error file created somewhere if there was an error, or perhaps something mentioned in a log file?  If so,
    where?
    4. has anyone encountered a similar issue before and can provide any insight?
    5. anything else I'm missing?
I'm attempting to restore a second time, and it is not even halfway through drive C, so it might not be until the end of the week before the entire process completes.  To be safe, especially from nosey cats, I disabled the mouse and keyboard so no input
can interrupt and accidentally cancel the process.
    thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
For the first problem, if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, the 1st disk (C) can be successfully restored.
For the second problem, I think it is normal to take a long time to finish the process, it is depend on the size of the date.
For the third problem, you may check the setup log files to find the clue of the cause.

    Hi,
We can have alternate ways to send IDocs from external system to SAP system. One way is in below link
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_46b/helpdata/en/52/16abf6543311d1891c0000e8322f96/content.htm.

I can think of few more, like In external system after generating Idoc, save it as a tex and send it to SAP system using Http post or using web service.
    Look out to below discussion.

  • Send IDoc from External System to SAP system

    Hi Folks,
I have a requirement to send IDocs from an external system to the SAp system. Basically the external system is a subsystem which is able to send & receive idocs. The external system is currently able to send idocs to SAP system through the ALE layer but now we have to replace it by PI. Now the external system has to send teh IDocs to the SAP ECC system through the SAP PI 7.0.
Kindly let me knowq how I can achieve it.
    Regards,
      Santosh

    Hi Satish,
    You can achieve this requirement
1)If your external system going to support web service cals then send IDoc from External system as a web service, in PI use sender side SOAP and receiver side IDoc receiver channel  to  send IDoc.
    or
2)Use proxy program ,implement the same ALE logic in PI.
      or
3)Copy the Extenal IDoc message in to file folder as XML,then use file adapter to pick up this message and send it SAP using IDoc.

  • Options to extract from external system

    Hi,
What are all the possible options (DB connect, UD connect...) are there in BW to extract data from external system in BW and under which circumstances which one to use.
    Thanks,
    sam

    Hi Sam,
    Some information about DB Connect.
DB Connect allows you to have extra database connections besides the default connection for SAP.
You use these connections to access databases and transfer data into a BI system.
In general, BI application servers can only be supported for DB Connect on operating system versions where a SAP Database Shared Library (DBSL) has been released for the BI database and the source database.
    Please see this link below

    Hi,
    did you configure Kerberos delegation?
NTLM fails when you try to open external list from client computer, because SharePoint cannot pass user's identity - "Double Hop" issue.
Take a look at confguring Kerberos for SharePoint 2010 white paper

  • Modify PO from external system

    Hi all,
We are implementing SRM 5.0 with extended classi scenario.
Until now we have a R3 system where we create PO, but we also have got a functionality for modifing particular information of PO in a lagacy system, that comunicate with R3 between idoc.
Now we migrate the lifecycle of PO in SRM, but the legacy system remains.
Wich is the best way for modify a PO from a legacy system in SRM?
    thanks
    enzo

    Hi,
You can try multiple methods ( mostly non-standard), one is use the SRM function modules to update PO, when you send the data from external system, other method is PO response( send the changes from external system as PO response in SRM).
Hope above methods will resolve your issue.
    Thank you
