RMBP and Freezing during Graphics Intense Applications

Hi all,
I have a MBP Retina and whenever I try to run Civilization V or Aperture Full Screen (or anything else that requires switching to the nVidia graphics), my computer completely freezes in place.  This means everything can display on the screen, but everything just stops.  If I was listening to iTunes while doing whatever activity it suddenly stops playing, along with the application I am using.  Mouse is completely frozen.  Is it a software problem?  Should I go spend some time getting it replaced at the Apple Store?
Thanks.
-Dave

Hey Dave,
I've been experiencing the same exact issue. I also noticed when using an external display that the screen will show some static for a couple seconds then everything will work as intended.
Were you able to replicate this issue on the Windows partition (if you have one)? The issue is definitely heat related. If I use SMCfancontrol to keep the fans at a higher rpm while gaming or using a graphic intense application, everything is fine.
I'm trying to figure out how to handle this.
Thanks,
Coupe

  • Display flickering during graphics intense applications

I'am using a Macbook Pro late 2011 having intel i7 processor and  AMD radeon HD 6750M and 4gb RAM..
I had installed windows 7 through bootcamp and used it to play graphics intense games.. worked fine
After a while i installed different drivers for the graphics processor for ATI website, it did not perform well and after a while(means after days) it started getting a split screen and eventually went blank... i had to restart the laptop manually.. after a while windows did not boot.. I uninstalled windows and used only osX.. eventually osX(10.9) also got a slipt screen and went blank.. i restarted the laptop manually but the start screen where the apple logo shines had horizontal blue lines... yhe OS did not boot and whene i went to the recovery mode i got a death blue screen(just blue).... I took my laptop to the nearest service center(in india) .. they formatted my hard disc and reinstalled the OS.. they told me it was "an operating system crash" and no problem with the hardware... everthing went fine.. I played another game on OSX and again got the split screen.. i restarted it manually.. everything was fine.. i installed fifa 13 on my mac.. ran pretty well.. later i tried converting a video and got the same problem ...
I dont know wether it is a software or hardware problem and can i continue playing games on MAC!!??... my free service has expired and service centers here charge a lot and dont do anythimg well!!!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In your case, it is clear that the GPU has failed. It would be a software issue if it only happens in Windows or OS X, but it is a hardware issue if it happens in both operating systems. This was the first thing that happened to me when my iMac's GPU got damaged.
The problem of the GPU is that it is quite expensive to get it replaced, because the whole logic board has to be replaced. If you cannot afford it and you can start up in OS X, what you can do is to use gfxCardStatus and put it in integrated mode, so your Mac will only use the integrated GPU and you should not experience that problem again. However, you will notice a performance decrease in games

Please check if other users have the same problem when you colleague share his desktop with them.
Mostly this is related the computer or the Lync client.
Please try to use the Lync 2010 to do the sharing.

  • Periodic lag experienced in graphics-intensive application

This lag is debilitating.  So far I have only experienced it on the Windows 7 (64 bit) side of my Bootcamp partition, but I have not attempted to run such applications in the OSX side.
The Problem:  About every 5.1 to 5.2 seconds, the framerate drops to a standstill.  As this happens over and over again, the duration of the stutter increases until after about an hour it is equal parts smooth and lagged.  Despite the increased duration, the periodicity remains between 5.1 and 5.2 seconds by my stopwatch.  Eventually, the lag becomes so great that the applications become unusable.
I have found this problem in the following applications:
    TERA Online
    Guild Wars2
    Star Wars The Old Republic
I have also found forum discussions citing the same symptoms in Diablo 3, although I have not played or installed that game on my own system.
This appears to be a common problem across all these graphics-intensive games specifically centered around the iMac.  This is why I am bringing this up to the Apple community.  Has anyone else seen this phenomenon?  Is there a solution?   I did just update the Radeon HD 4850 graphics drivers.  Could that have something to do with it?

Interestingly, when I turned on my computer this morning, it got stuck in the boot process.  The revolvong timer under the apple logo took about three minutes to clear and then I got stuck on the blue screen that appears before you see your desktop wallpaper.  I had to manually turn it off and restart it.  It started fine the second time.  The only thing I had done the day before was move my bootcamp folders into the privacy section of Spotlight as recommended on another forum.
When I launched bootcamp, I noticed one difference immediately:  the clock was correct.  I know this sounds silly, but the computer clock in Windows had been five hours off for over a week.  I've had to manually set it each time I boot into bootcamp.  Not today.  Also today there has been no lag as I have described above.  Whatever the problem was (or is), the symptoms have disappeared.  I wonder if it was related to the clock, and/or Spotlight.
In any event, I also took your advice and downloaded CCleaner and performed a drive analysis, cleaned it and my registry today.  I'll conduct some more tests, but so far the symptoms seem to have gone away.

  • [Solved]Computer slow down and freeze during data transfer syncing

    Hello,
Everytime I make a data transfer, my computer slow down, and sometimes freeze during a few seconds, work for a fraction of seconds and freeze again. I don"t understand why.
As an example, here is a bench of files i transfered during a syncing with Grsync
It took about 12h to sync 64Gb.
I've read a lot of topics talking about this problem but nothing works. I tried to switch off the SWAP and setting the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.background_dirty_ratio but nothing works.
I'm making the trasfer between two Western Digital USB 2.0 external hard drive in NTFS.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

It seems it was beacause one of my external hard drive was about to die. I performed the same operation with 2 Western Digital external hard drive 1To USB3 and it works perfectly.

  • Finder sometimes freezes after graphics-intensive programs

I've just updated to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 and found a new behaviour:
Sometimes, after running graphics-intensive programs (which I was running under 10.4.7 before), I'm seeing that Finder stops responding to the mouse clicks or keyboard. In fact, the mouse cursor moves, but can't click or drag anything.
For example: I've seen this happen after running LiveQuartz and CoreImage Funhouse in succession. This has happened with the same user or after running gfx programs as one user and switching to a different users.
The only solution is forcing a shutdown by holding the power key.
    I have tried:
    1/ Cleaning caches
    2/ Rebuilding kext caches
3/ All normal maintenance tasks (periodic command)
4/ Redoing all of the dynamic linking, etc.
    5/ Running as different users.
    6/ Resetting the PRAM.
    No luck.
I have seen an issue like this with ATI graphics when the GL Shader portion of the ATI drivers, but have never seen it on a Mac. It feels like a gfx driver stability issue. No messages in console or system logs that would give any clues.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Matthew

Forgive me for not knowing already, but does that list include repairing disk permossions? My computer, after installation, did this and many worse things before repairing permission.s Also when repairing permissions it seems to not repair all of them unless you boot off of your install disk.
^^You probably already know that. Doesn't hurt to find out though

  • Dropped Frames and "freezing" during capture

I'm having a problem capturing video....it mostly captures although I get "freezes" where the sound continues but the video frames are dropped. If I leave the Quit capture upon dropped frames I can't capture too much as the freezing happens about every 15 to 30 seconds. Any help?
I'm having the same problems on both computers and also when I try to set the hard drive as the scratch as opposed to my external HD.
    MacBook Pro (INtel)
    iMac (800mhz)
    FCE 2.0
    Thanks in advance

    Tom,
Same issue here. I've been capturing well with the same setup months ago and have not had this issue until now.
The video "freezing" happens during writing to the hard disk during capture. Using Activity Monitor, you can see 2 second "bursts" of data written to disk every 30 seconds. The video in the capture window freezes during these bursts.
Activity Monitor also shows zero bytes of data being written to disk in between the bursts, but that doesn't seem right, because I know the video is being captured. (You can play it back in FCE)
The freezing can be seen during capture and when playing the captured clip in the viewer. Audio playback is fine.
I tried 3 different Scratch Disk settings with the same results:
    External USB 2.0
    External FW 800
    Internal disk on PowerMac
    Dual 2.0 GHz G5 (Cheese-Grater) PowerMac
    10.4.9
    FCE HD 3.0
    QT Pro 7.1.5
3.5 GB Ram (100% set for FCE in settings)
FCE Easy Setup for DV Converter
    Canopus ADVC110 converter
Analog VCR input into Canopus (Default settings on Canopus)
Firewire connection from Canopus to Mac
I couldn't find anything in your FCE Editing Workshop book that could help with this either. Everything worked fine a few months ago.

  • K7n2 shuts off during graphic intensive programs

My problem is that sometimes, mainly when I'm running a graphically intensive prgram (mainly games) my computer shuts completley off. This has only hapened when I'm playing a game, like final fantasy XI or unreal 2004.
I thought it was the ge force, so i turned it from 8x to 4x. i have also had the case opened and a room fan pointed directly in blasting air to keep the temperature down, ause i thought it might be shutting off due to temperature. But today it shut off even with the room fan.

Wow I'm surprised you'd get as far as you did...glad you got it sorted.
FYI That's mentioned in the troubleshooting guide at the top of the forum.

  • My FCP7 application is constantly lagging and freezing during playback.

I am working off of a 4TB external HD with nearly 2TB of free space. I am constantly getting no playback after about 30 seconds of uninterrupted playback, sometimes less. I have trashed my preference files and still have had no luck. This is bringing my workflow to a standstill and I am about to start missing deadlines. I need help ASAP. any suggestions?

do you have at least 20% free space on your startup drive?
Do you have multiple external drives connected?  Try disconnecting everything but the media drive.
How is the g-tech drive connected?  Firewire?  Thunderbolt?
You might be having a drive problem.  Run applications:  disk utility:  drive repair on all drives.  You'll need to boot of your install disk or restore partition to run it on your startup drive.  I'd also suggest getting and running DiskWarrior.  It's saved my life a few times
    http://alsoft.com/
You might do some googling and find a drive speed test application to see if there's an issue with the g-tech.
And here's a user tip with a bunch of troubleshooting steps

  • 2 issues in LI2,  slowing and freezing during developing, slideshow not showing all images.

    1. Lightroom Is slowing down during normal development.
I only have 3500 photos in this catalog and am working on 50 to 200 photo in Raw format at a time,
When Opening and beginning  a project the program worked fine but after a few hours of adjustments the program slows and then  freezes for minutes at a time forcing me to shut down the computer and restart.  I have a 1.5 TB hard drive and have moved the bulk of my files to a backup drive freeing up the MAJORITY of the hard drive for processing.  I have been threw the 8 ways to speed up Lightroom and an finding the problem persisting. IDEA'S?
    2. LI's Slideshow is not consistent in showing all the images.
after going through the slideshow's setting and playing the slideshow, LI will show some photos and not others and start over at random order.  Idea's?

Images that are edited in Photoshop will be displayed automatically in Lr only when the image-file saved in Photoshop is the same as the one opened from Lr.
You say you open a JPG from Lr, then edit it in PS by - among other things - adding some layers. Layers are not supported in the JPG-format so you have to either save it as a psd or as a jpg-copy.
In either case this is not the same image file as the one opened in Lr, so it will have to be imported into Lr to show up. If you would flatten your image after editing in PS and then do a <save> to your JPG - not a <save as> - it will show up in Lr.
PS: the only exception is when you open a Raw image from Lr in PS and you save it in PS in the file format specified in Lr for external editing. The saved file will automatically show in LR.

  • Macbook Pro Retina keeps shutting down during graphics intensive work

Today my macbook began shutting down while working with Aperture, Photoshop and while playing Borderlands 2.  This hasn't happened at all until today.
Looking through some suggestions here I have:
Run 2 hardware tests with no negative results.  Changed the screen resolution.  Turned off Automatic Graphics switching.
However it keeps crashing - actually crashed 3 times while attempting to start it up last time.  I've reset teh resolution and graphics switching - hoping someone out there may have an idea???  And I'm not using Google Chrome.

Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

I'll give it a go Ogelthorpe.  Ran the more intense hour long hardware test last night and then left it shut down overnight.  No results again for the test, but this morning I've run it through a few minutes of borderlands 2 with no shut down.  Strange.  Am fully expecting it to start playing up again though.

  • My macbook pro is lagging and freezing constantly in simple applications.

It just happen very recently and out of nowhere. Simple applications like word and finder where becoming really slow and just scrolling up and down seem to take several minutes. Most applications require me to use activity monitor to force quit. Booting up takes about several minutes. I have about 250gb free and have checked constantly the CPU and how much RAM my mac uses(2.00gb free of 4gb). I also have done repair permisions without any problems. Please help. Thanks in advance.

  • Mouse freezing during CPU intensive tasks

So ive been running the w10 preview for a while now ( i dont remember the version number i joined at) and the only issue ive been having is it will occasionally stop accepting input from the mouse. Cursor freezes but the rest of the OS is fine. if i navigate
to device manager with the keyboard it still shows the mouse is connected. if i unplug the mouse when it freezes and plug it back in (same or different slot) the pc makes the connected device noise but then hangs. no BSOD it just hangs and i have to force
restart. if i Sleep the pc and then turn it back on it will work again but this only works 5 or 6 times and then the system refuses to sleep and a restart is needed.
It appears to only occur when the pc is doing something intensive. if im just browsing or watching youtube its fine. Playing Dota2 is not too bad but it gets worse when im playing Besiege (lots of physics calcs?) and it lasts barely 2 minutes if im gamestreaming/screenrecording.
    halp :(

    Hi,
We can find the watermark version number on the right bottom of the desktop screen.
First, I recommend you you patch the system with latest windows updates inclusing latest device drivers, then check the system performance.
Run virus scan to eliminate malware\virus infection.
If this issue persists, then when it happens, I recommend you press ctrl-alt-del to lauch task manager, then check the process\cpu\memory usage, find something abnormal.

  • Laptop Restarts randomly and Freezes with graphic errors

    Hello,
I've been having some strange issues with my computer and would like some help with determining the cause.
    It will do the following:
    1. Restart randomly. Screen goes dark and immediately jumps to the Toshiba screen that is seen when the system starts
    2. System will freeze, leaving screen with green lines over what it was originally showing.
    3. System occasionally has Blue Screen Of Death instead of number 1.
Note: Both of these errors happen regardless of the system's heat and my McAffe full scan returned no results (over 20 hours of scanning).  Using the system in safe mode causes these errors to stop, I think. In doing so, I was able to complete such
a long scan when my computer was otherwise in a fit of its restarting "bouts."
    System:
    Toshiba Satellite L775d-S7222
Purchased 2 years ago. First error stated a year ago, second half a year ago.
Here is a link to my system and application log files for the last 24 hours. Note that I had error 1 at 7:58pm Wednesday march 12, 2014 and error 2 at 8:03 pm Wednesday march 12, 2014.  From researching these problems I found that these logs would show
issues, but I am not sure how to interpolate them.  Could someone help me with what they are indicating is the problem or what I need to look at that would indicate the problem?

    Thanks a lot

You have quite a few issues and the log file is over 100,000 entries.  It might be a good idea to clear these logs once in a while.
In my first glance at this you have two active Malware applications and that in itself can cause freezes and crashes.
They both should be removed and MSE should be used in their place.  This may fix the problem.  If it doesnt please clear your event viewer logs and upload the following.
Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
We do need the actual DMP file as theyvcontain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask
To remove the two active malware applications'
    McAffe often contributes to BSOD'S
I would remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials

  • Hp 6330f keeps crashing at start up and freezes during hibernation

    Hello,
    Running
Intel Core i3-530 CPU (2.93 GHz)
    6GB DDR3 Memory
    1TB SATA Hard Drive
    Intel integrated graphics (32MB shared)
    Super Multi DVD drive (read/write)
    15-in-1 card reader
    7.1-channel audio support
    6 USB inputs
    FireWire port
    HDMI/DVI/VGA outputs
    Gigabit ethernet
    HP MediaSmart software
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Been having a lot of issues lately, mostly the screen breaks into 4 lines and the system restarts, there are no beeps or warnings. Lately  have not been able to start the PC it keeps crashing on startup, ran HP diagnostics it passed everything except the S.M.A.R.T short test.  I ran Disk check and it was not able to recover some sections, not sure what else to do. Has anyone had similar problems to this? what can I do??

    Hi,
Given the fact that the Hard Drive has failed the Smart test and Chkdsk is reporting sectors on the hard drive that cannot be read/written to, it really would look like the drive is failing and will need to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the crashing/freezing issues that you mention.
If your PC is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.
    Regards,
    DP-K
