RMBP External Display Flickering Green Pixels

Hi,
I own a MacBook Pro 2012 with retina display and an LG W2363D (3D) monitor.
I have tried to connect my monitor with Thunderbolt -> DVI cables having 650M enabled. Moreover, I checked for DVI-D and DVI-I as the monitor only supports the former.
However, although the image is displayed on the external monitor I get green pixels flickering on the screen, here is a screenshot http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/2310/cam00042.jpgAlthough I have tried 3 different cables the problem remains the same...
I have also tried different resolutions rather than 1080p. The only way to limit the problem was to lower the resolution so that I could choose a refresh rate more than 60hz however this is not an acceptable solution for such an expensive investment.
What can I do? Is there an nvidia update that I could use?

I notice the same with my external EIZO EV233W (DVI) on a mid 2012 non-retina MBP 15".
But strangely enough if I go to screen preferences, change the (external) screen mode to scaled (doesn't matter which mode), then change it back to "Best for screen" (so nothing has changed, since this was the default), the green pixels are gone ..
Kind of a hassle to do this excersise everytime I connect the external monitor, but it reassures me this is not a hardware issue in my case, just annoying.
EDIT: the other input (displayport) on this monitor is permanently connected to my Windows 7(64bit) machine, never had an issue there.

External Display Flickers (Intel on board)

Hi,
I have recently made a fresh installation of Arch Linux and trying to setup it for my work environment. I made a basic installation of xfce4 with slim login manager. I wanted to hook my laptop with an external display. I used xrandr to extend my laptop display with the external display. Everything worked fine but my external display flickers insanely bad. I cannot stare at it for > 30s. I dual boot on windows, so I tested the same setup with windows and it worked just fine, out of the box. I even used one of my friend's laptop who's running ubuntu and has the same h/w. It worked out of the box. I have spent more than 8 hours trying to find out where the issue would be and miserably failed. Below are certain logs and output that might help traingulate my issue.
Its a Dell Inspiron N4030, with Intel onboard graphics. I have the xf86-video-intel driver installed and the display works perfectly fine with laptops default display.

No one? I have the exact same problem. MSI x360 laptop, intel onboard graphics. I too use xrandr. I've seen elsewhere that windows users have solved this by turning off GPU overclocking. Maybe this can point us in the right direction?

Flickering Green pixels all over 21" Apple Cinema Display is getting worse

Has anyone ever had this problem before? I have a 5 year old, not overly used 21" Apple LCD Cinema Display. Just recently, it started having these tiny flickering green dots but only on black fields. Now it is getting worse. I am now having the same problem only this time, additionally, its red on white fields. It goes on and off intermitently. Sometimes, my monitor would just turn GREEN especially after viewing some photos. (I think this monitor was made in Mars or something)
What is causing this problem? Do I need to get a new monitor or can I still have it fixed? Please help.

In my case, the severity of the flicker varies with what is trying to be displayed. In screensaver mode, for example, there is no flicker unless I choose to display photographs. Problem is also quite severe when I'm in Aperture; less so in Safari.
I've had the same problem with two separate graphics cards so it must be the cable or the display.

External Display Flickering/Blanking out on Windows 8.1 Boot Camp

OK, so I have a MBP 15" Mid-2012 model running the latest versions of Mavericks and all software and drivers on Windows are up-to-date. I am using my external display through an Active HDMI adapter for Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt (one that broadcasts audio as well as video).
So, this adapter and image seems to work perfectly fine on the Mac side, however, when I flip the switch to Windows 8.1, the external display goes haywire and goes blank and flickers with occasional lines and static across the screen. Image comes back every few seconds and then will suddenly lose signal.
I've been reading around the internet and I've seen that this could be a hardware issue in that Intel never put support for Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort on their chipsets for Windows, not a driver issue.
How screwed am I? If not so screwed, what steps do I need to take to attain functionality of the external display while running Windows 8.1 through Boot Camp?
Note: my Mac does not come with an HDMI port already installed like current Macs. This was the last high-end Macbook Pro to have an optical drive installed on it.

On a later rMBP, I can connect three displays via TB at full resolution.
One suggestion is to try a Display-miniDP cable, instead of a converted HDMI signal, if the monitor will accept a DP connection.
If it works correctly on the Mac side, it would be a driver issue, since the hardware supports it with one OS, but not the other. The effects you describe indicates that some pins on the HDMI are not getting correct signals to maintain image refresh rates or pixel sync. When you use the current connection, does the Control Panel -> Displays detect the model and name correctly? If not, the EDID detection is failing.

External displays with similar pixel density to 17" MBP display?

I've got a 17" MacBook Pro, native resolution 1920x1200, which is quite high in terms of pixel density. I have a 24" external Samsung display, also 1920x1200, which means the pixel density is lower. It works fine, but (as you might expect), screen items increase in size rather noticeably when I drag from the laptop display to the external display. (The 24" LCD Apple Cinema Display is also 1920x1200, so the same thing would happen). I've been looking all over the place, and I can't seem to find an external display in the 20-24" range that has a resolution higher than 1920x1200. Ideally I'd like to find a display with the same amazing pixel density, so everything is the same size on both my laptop display and on the external display. I don't know what that would be--probably something like 2048x1152 on a 20" or 22", and 2560x1600 for a 24". Even Apple's 30" Cinema Display at 2560x1600 (or what I imagine will be the new 27" LCD coming out later this summer, probably at 2560x1600) would suffer from this problem, because while the resolution is great, the screen size is so large that the pixel density is lower and once again screen items would increase in size when moved from the laptop monitor to the external monitor. I don't really care about screen size or cost. I'd buy a 20" display, or a 30" display, at pretty much any price, if the pixel density were identical to my MacBook Pro. Anybody know where I can find something like this?

The pixel densities of the 15" hi-res MBP at 1680 x 1050 and the 17" at 1920 x 1200 are really quite extreme — the 17" slightly more so than the 15". To read the "fine print" on those screens without a resolution-independent user interface (which the Mac OS doesn't yet offer), most users have to sit closer to those displays than they'd want to be to a 27" or 30" display, simply because for a viewer sitting that close to it, the bigger display would extend outward beyond the central field of sharply focused vision. One would constantly be leaning forward and back: in to read the menus or palettes and then out to see the whole screen. That would be pretty tiring. Thus I think it's quite unlikely that we'll ever see 30", 27" or maybe even 24" displays from Apple or anyone else at the same pixel density as the highest-resolution MBPs: 133.2 pixels per inch for the 17" and 128.6 for the 15", compared with 108.8 for the 27" iMac and 97.7 for the 30" Cinema Display). The current standard-resolution 15" MBP at 110.3 actually has a lower pixel density than the 13", at 113.5.
Interestingly, the current 24" Apple LED-backlit display at 113.2 has almost exactly the same pixel density as the 13" MacBook Pro screen. For someone who wanted things to stay the same size when moving from screen to screen, that would be an ideal pairing. But the 13" MBP sure wouldn't be any match for the 17" in terms of screen real estate when each was being used as a stand-alone portable.

External display flickers for a fraction of a second

Hello all,
Im using a macbook pro 15 with the new invidia 8600m graphics, hooked up to a cinema hd 30 inch display at home and a HP 30 inch display at work.
At times, maybe twice an hour, my external display will flicker for a fraction of a second. I can not find a source of the problem, having tried all available graphics drivers from apple and forceware drivers from laptopvideo2go.
The problem does not seem to be related to any particular action in vista, like opening windows or applications. It just flickers at any given time, for a fraction of a second and then comes back to normal.
I have tried all available drivers. Yes, UAC is off. TMM is off, too. Yes, it does the flickering on both my cinema hd and the hp 30 at work. Yes, it is very very annoying.
Anyone else having the same problem? Any idea of what it might be?

I have but the problem is still there. Matt on this forum has the same problem. He is in Austria, so maybe there is issue with streaming ATV in 50hz countries.
Will try to connect the ATV directly to my projector instead of going through the receiver.

Flickering Green pixels everywhere!

I have a dual monitor set-up and on the main monitor I use the "Earth" desktop picture and two days ago I thought, "cool, my mac knows when it's Christmas and it's put twinkling green stars all over my screen..".
Then I realized that those twinkling stars are green pixels flickering everywhere. At first I thought it was my LG WTQ226 monitor going on the fritz. So I tried it on another Mac and no stars. Then I realized that I have green pixels on the second monitor, an old NEC vga that still works perfectly. Hmmm... this is weird! Some, not all, of the stars disappear when I pass my cursor over them, but they come back in random clusters in other spots.
Other things I tried:
-Booting from a cloned version of Leopard 10.52
-Resetting SMC
-Swapping DVI cables
Finally I phoned Apple and asked them to send me another HD 2600XT video card to test out.
Anyone have the same issue? Was it the video card?

The problems with the GF7300 started with the 10.5.2 updates.
I dont know what exactly goes in trouble, but with the 10.5.5 update
my screen freezs very often.
I checked the things users told here in the forum
-clean install (normal - cobo - TM restore)
-fresh install with fresh user
-pram reset
-clean the comp inside
- etc
nothing works.
in "Safe Boot" everything is going normal.
But then i cant use the GL features.
Its not clear what exactly the problem is.
Is it the Firmware - or bad driver - or a core grafic problem?
after all and 3weeks of testing, i ordered the ati because no support from apple,
no applecare an not time to wait.
i hope in future the support will be better.
The HD2600 is fast as the 7300 an works very silent with the fan.

External Displays tinted Green/yellow after update

I had just installed the Java 5.0 and latest AirPort update to my powerbook and the next time I tried to plug in my TV the display was suddenly dark and had a green tint. I'm not sure the updates had anything to do with it, maybe something just shorted out when I plugged in the external adapter. I have been using an external monitor everyday for the past 2 years with this powerbook with no problems, now since this incident my external display is tinted green on all monitors and TVs. Color profiles don't help at all. Is there anything that I can do software-wise in attempt to fix this problem, or is it probable that something happened with my video card that will require it to be replaced? I have zapped the pram, but nothing. Has anyone else had this problem, I saw a few posts about external display abnormalities, but no solutions. I use my laptop as a desktop most of the time (external monitor, keyboard/mouse, clamshell) so this is a very big problem for me. Please help!!

I forgot to mention, this is a 12" powerbook, not a 15". I made the mistake of posting this in the wrong place, I dont see a way to move it, could a moderator? Anyway, I've also since tried resetting the open firmware, deleting all display prefs I could find and holding down "r" on startup. No results.

RMBP external display strangeness

I got tired of waiting for a real update to the Mac Pro line and decided to spring for a retina display MBP as my primary computer. I was using two 27" NEC Multisync PA271W monitors for my work on the Mac Pro, and I am trying to rig up a solution where I now have three screens to use: the MBP display and the two NECs. No problem, right?
So I assembled the following:
2 mini Displayport to DVI-D converter plugs
1 LaCie eSATA to Thunderbolt hub
2 Monitors
! Thunderbolt cable
I plugged one of the miniDisplayport to DVD connectors directly to one of the thunderbolt ports and then connected it to Monitor 1 with a DVI-D cable
I plugged the thunderbolt cable in the other thunderbolt port, and then ran it to the LaCie TB/eSATA hub. From there, I connected the other miniDisplayport converter and then connected it to monitor 2 via a DVI-D cable
When I go into System settings, all of the monitors appear. However, Monitor 1, which is hooked directly to the TB port on the rMBP will only allow a maximum scaled resolution of 1920x1180, even though the monitor's native resolution is 2560x1440. Monitor 2, which is connected via the LaCie TB/eSATA hub allows me to select the full resolution of 2560x1440.
I switched the monitors - same result.
I pressed the option key when I clicked on Scaling in System Preferences - same thing - the directly connected monitor will only run at a reduced resolution.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I suppose I may end up getting another hub, since I plan on using another eSATA driv

Hello, TheForce61! I am having the same issue and would love some advice. I have a MBP purchased in January 2012, so I don't think it has Retina, but I don't know how to figure that out. For a year, I hooked it up to my old Westinghouse external display, with no problems with blurry text. But that monitor died a few days ago, and I bought a new Samsung SyncMaster S20B350. And the text is HORRID. All I use it for is text, so I don't care if the video or graphics are lovely. Someone recommended a PRAM reset, but that didn't work. I am using the cable adapter that came with the MacBook Pro - the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. The small end of the adapter connects to the laptop, and then I connect the other end to the cable that came with the monitor. The monitor cable then goes into the "RGB In" slot. There is also an "HDMI In" slot on the monitor (It's a Samsung 20" LED Monitor - S20B350). Should I try a different cable? Someone else recommended this adaptor: Mini DisplayPort + USB to Dual-Link DVI signal format converter But it seems lame that I have to spend $65 to make a $140 monitor work properly! Thoughts? External display flickers randomly

Hi, I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air with i7 4GB RAM and 256GB of SSD.
About 2 weeks ago I have decided to set up a mini workstation on my desk and soon after I bought the Dell U2412M external display (I can't afford the Thunderbolt Display!). Along with an external keyboard and mouse, I connect the Dell with the MBA using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. Finally I shut off the lid on the MBA to begin clamshell mode.
For 2 weeks it was uneventful, I was happy with the setup and the U2412M is awesome. Until yesterday, when I bought OS X Mountain Lion and began installing it on my MBA. Everything changed after that.
I think I should note that I did the installation in clamshell mode. During the installation, the display on the Dell started to flicker badly, and soon it blacks out for roughly 3 seconds, before coming back to life. The flickering and blackouts continued throughout the installation process.
Now that Mountain Lion is installed nicely on my MBA, the screen still flickers and blacks out frequently. In fact, while writing this post the screen blacked out 4 times.
I need help on this. Is there anyone kind enough to provide some advice or solution?

External display flickers BADLY on refresh/redraw under Mavericks

Running a mid 2008 Macbook Pro: 2GB RAM, 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB. Connected to a 24" Apple Cinema Display via the DVI to ADC adapter. Had been running Lion, no problem. Decided to break my own rule about jumping into OS updates and download Mavericks today. Immediately ran Software Update to apply any patches.
Screen refresh/ redraw is TERRIBLE. Endless parade of flickering and crappy redraws. Click on a folder in the Dock and you see it refreshing each scale-step of the expanding and brightening pop-up. Click on the Launcher, and you can see it redrawing the screen line by line through the animation steps and transplucency until eventually the icons show up. Safari continuously redraws the page contents, the address/search bar flickers like mad when entering information and loading a page.
This is unacceptable and darn near unusuable.
Does anyone know of any fixes or tips to make this stop? Is this an issue with Mavericks "breaking" the NVIDIA display drivers? Something that's changed with how external monitors are supported or managed?

I unplugged my Macbook and worked with it away from my monitor for a while. When I came back a day later and plugged it in, the flicker problems were resolved, for the most part. Launcher renders smoothly. I see a little bit of the Application folder animating only, but I think that may just be the icons themselves updating. Safari renders pages as expected and the URL bar no longer flickers/redraws while loading. I think it might have been the new gradient-progress bar redrawing that threw it off before.
Unplugging and re-plugging (along with much ranting in between) seems to have resolved this for the moment. I'll be working away from my desk again soon, so we'll see whether this holds up once I dock it again. So far, though, so good. I didn't apply any updates while I was away, unless Mavericks does something like that in the background without notifying me but it doesn't appear to be doing that.

X201i - external display flickers

I've had this problem since the first day I got it. I don't think it's my monitor's problem since it's the same situation on two different displays. I'm running windows XP. Today I decided I can't live with it.
I've tried everything I got from online knowledge base. I just updated my BIOS and display driver. I adjusted the graphic power plan setting to "on battery". I even ungrounded my display's plug. None of them works.
Forgot to mention, it stops flickering whenever I unplug and run on battery. And interestingly enough, whenever I start skype video, the flickering stops too.
More update: the flickering stops if I set external screen as the only display.
And update: I unplugged my ethernet and now it's not flickering! Gotta go with wireless!

Green pixels on boot camp only

Since some time I have flickering green pixels in my dsiplay when I boot into Windows. In OSX the display is fine. Moreover is not a display issue as my mouse can cover the green pixels.
It seems the green pixels appear as soon as the EFI loads whatever legacy bios it uses to boot windows, so it does not seem to be a windows driver issue.
It is a 2007 iMac, Lion and Windos 7.
Anyone have an idea? Have there been other similar reports? I cant seem to find anything.

Coverflow causes external display to flicker when rotated

Hi,
I have a new MBP 15", 2.2GHz, 2GB with Leopard installed, and I have an external monitor (a Lenovo Thinkvision L201p) which can be rotated into portrait mode, and that is how I use it almost all the time.
The problem I have is that whenever I browse something using coverflow, be it in the Finder or in iTunes, the external display flickers (sometimes quite badly) as the items move. This happens even if the application that is using coverflow is on a different space (for example, if I have iTunes on a different space and it switches to a different song). It only happens when in rotated mode, in landscape mode the flickering goes away.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Maybe an issue with the video driver? Can someone reproduce this?

Flashing white/green pixels on external monitor

Hello everyone, I just purchased a 15" MBP with the hi-res antiglare monitor. I upgraded from a black Macbook, which was connected to my 24" Samsung monitor with a Displayport to DVI adapter. When I bought the new MBP, I also bought a new miniDisplayport to DVI adapter. I just now hooked up my MBP with the new adapter to the Samsung monitor and there are/were two issues.
1) When I imported my photos off of my DSLR camera, I noticed green flickering pixels stuck on the images. These pixels moved and flashed with the image, so I know they weren't dead. When viewing those images on my regular 15" MBP monitor, those pixels were not there. They were only on the external monitor. I thought this may be an issue with my DSLR/image import, but then I noticed random purple/green pixel artifacts on an ad on Facebook as well.
2) I reset the NVRAM, flipped the DVI cord out and around, and reconnected it. Now, the green pixels do not seem to show up BUT there are now tons of tiny white pixels flashing across my entire screen. I disconnected/reconnected the display connector several times, and I was able to recreate #1 once. I haven't bena able to again.
I reconnected my old Macbook with the old adapter to the monitor and there were none of these issues.
What might be the problem? I can't capture the pixelation effect on screen capture.
I'm thinking its either:
An issue of Mountain Lion
My Macbook Pro's software
My Macbook Pro's hardware
The miniDisplayport adapter.

Having the exact same issue. I'm getting the problem on my LG Flatron E2742 external display, from a Thunderbolt to HDMI out from my 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.
The issue began yesterday when I connected my MBP to a HDMI Projector. I noticed, via the projected image, the beginning of the dancing white/green pixels. What's really weird is that when I connected my MBP back to my standard LG External display, the dancing white pixels were still there!
MAYBE it's something that happeend to my thunderbolt to HDMI cable in the process? Haven't experimented with another cable to confirm this. BUT, something tells me it's actually software related, because when I first plugged in my external display this morning, it began flickering/staticing/spazzing out like CRAZY. After some poking around and forums, I eventually changed my display color profile and it went back to normal, EXCEPT for the dancing white/green pixels.
Any words of wisdom out there about this situation would be much appreciated.
