RMBP (Late 2013) Creaking

I have one of the Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro's that makes the creaking, squeaky clicky noise if I pick up my laptop or squeeze it near the bottom right of the trackpad.
I have finally managed to get a reservation at the Genius Bar next week.
So, I was just wondering what the general outcome is. Have any of you been to the Genius Bar with your creaky laptop? What did they do it?
Should I expect some tightened/loosened screws and have it handed back? I read that some Apple Stores have been looking for creaking laptops to examine, and issuing brand new MBPs!
How did you get on? Did the problem go away after visiting the Store?

HI .... So I too have that ******** sound - mine though is not like creaking - like shutting something w a hinge or like a door - it's like a very high pitched (totally wrong word to use but I can't describe it lol) tinging pinging clicking dinging sound... but like a bell but a teenie tiny bell hahahaha this is ridiculous lol ok ok I think I got one.... Ok so our computers are made of aluminum .... There's tiny screws which are also metal ..... Metal tapping another metal or something metal inside of a thin hollow metal casing jiggling around bc it's loose or whatever makes a very distinctive tiny tinging sound ... When I first noticed it it was  if I press down on the bottom directly  in the middle below the serial # & spec stamp between all the top half of surrounding screws ... There's 4 screws along the top where it hinges or closes & mirroring screws at the bottom where you would open it to use it... And 3 on the right and left sides... Imagine a line horizontally connecting the middle screws on the sides then one vertical between the sets of 4 ... I know this is dumb as **** lol I'm sorry ....Annoying sound location is on the top half and smack dab on the line splitting the top 4 set screws exactly half way between the 2 side screws
I Go to apple thinking tighten the screws please it sounds like there's a gap bc they're loose and something's tinging inside ...... I can make it make the sound every time and of course no one can hear it - 30 mins later and 15 techs later he heard it....Guys go in the back completely take the whole thing apart to see what's wrong.... Hour and a half later - nothing's wrong nothings loose and they pick up the other ones in the store and they all effing do it. after they did all that obviously I was so relieved and felt so much better - UNTIL the next day after I installed some updates and had to restart ...... My screen with the apple would change to pink and that multicolor weird screen when something's jacked up ... Flicker a little brighten up change to another color then go normal as my login screen would appear....... it continued on until a month ago then went back to normal ...... Don't try and get the noise fixed ... It's not worth what they can screw up on accident trying to see what's making the sound ... I got lucky reaaaaal lucky whatever happened wasn't serious bc I'm sure id have to pay to repair it....
and notice my elaboration on the word LAP Alirt
PS I have the 15.4 MBP Retina mid 2012

  • This is what worked for me to install 8.1 Pro on brand new rmbp late 2013 NO WORKAROUND

15 in rmbp, late 2013. Extrernal apple USB drive. USB key for bootcamp drivers. Brand new windows 8.1 pro full version from store. No Upgrade.
Used Bootcamp assistant to 1) save drivers to usb key 2) partition drive to two. Left usb key and drive connected.
Bootcamp assistant reboots mac, windows splash screen. Follow instructions including having to reformat the newly created partition which is usual. No bootcamp parttionn name is present but it should be obvious which is the OSX and Windows partition. Windows begins installing then fails. rmbP is stuck.
Restart nothing, just grey screen. Call apple care. Have to PRM, press on, hold command option P and R keys.Release when apple beep starts. Then it will boot back into OS-X
Boots into osx. Go to bootcamp assistant. Follow instructions and windows partition is removed to give a single OSX parttion. Reopen bootcamp assistant. Repartition. leave USB key and external drive attached. Restart and follow instructions as before. NO issues.
Note, the "almost ready" splash screen hangs for a long time.
Then bootcamp installer comes up. Build 5411.NVIDA driver installed etc. Auto resart after drivers installed. USB drive and key attached. WIndows splash screen. SUCCESSFULLY installed.
OI can also hold down option now on restart to sleect which OS to boot into . WORKS GREAT.
I suspect you have to do a PRM reset after first failure using bootcamp assistant to get it to install properly thereafter.
After I did this I was able to install fine using bootcamp installer in OS-X. No need for ANY work arounds.

This process worked for me on a new Mac Pro (early 2014) to get Windows 8.1 (not 8.0) installed, although I did make one slight change to the process: instead of following your advice at the point: "Restart and follow instructions as before", I instead restarted and used the windows partitioner dialog to 1) delete the bootcamp partition, and 2) create a new partition that was slightly smaller than the remaining available space (by about 1GB). The installer said it might need to create an additional small partition (which it did). I continued with the rest of the install process as you describe above. (Yes, it did take a long time to get past the "almost ready" part.)
Thank you very much for your post!

  • 13" rMBP Late 2013 Warm Palm Rest

    Hi,
This is my second 13" rMBP Late 2013 (i5 2.4GHz, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Retina 13"). I exchanged the first one only to get a US keyboard instead of French Canadian. On the first one, I never noticed the warm palm rest... on my new one, it feels quite warm, especially on the left side. iStat says the palm rest is at 32C when idle, and during a stress test (100% CPU), it got to 35C. Reviews talk about 28C idle and 32C at full load.
Is it often like this or I should exchange it? Am I the only one with this issue?

that is normal when playing games or doing other intensive things on a mac.  It wont damage it, the mac would shut off before it started to get so hot it might cause damage.

  • RMBP late 2013 - Random Crashes

    Hi.
My late 2013 rMBP is having random crashes, and it looks like it is graphic card related:
    It happens randomly when
    - Opening Launchcontrol with the trackpad gesture
    - Scrolling content in safari
    - System events that require zoom
    - Booting up: sometimes it freezes while in the apple logo screen, but most of them happen when the apps are loading up.
When recovering from the crashes, sometimes the keyboard settings change, it loads the american layout
There is no time associated with the crashes, it is random. It can crash 10 straight times and then stay one entire day without it.
There are no kernel panics, only system freezes and it unable to unfreeze unless pressing power button.
Reset of SMC and PRAM didn't solve, neither did fix permissions and repair disk.
    Any suggestion?

  • RMBP Late 2013 Facetime HD Camera Not Working

    Hi there,
I have my rMBP since the end of December. When I got it, i needed to update the OS X to 10.9.1. I don't recall if i tried the FaceTime HD Camera later or before the system update, but i'm sure it was working back then.
Now it doesn't work. At least it isn't stable. Some time it works, but very little times. When i turn up the PhotoBooth or any other software (Skype, Messages), the greenlight starts to blink repeatedly and that's about it. I can't see nothing besides black image.
I've been reading in questions simillar to mine it this forum and others, but it seems people with a problem similiar to mine only happened in OS X 10.8.4.
I read in a post ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/24030755#24030755 ) that updating the AppleCamera.plugin, located at /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/ would do the trick. I've tried that, but with no results.
I've also performed a hardware diagnostics test. Didn't have any warning or error. Seems the hardware (the webcam in this case), is running just
fine. If anyone is interesting to perform the same test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5781
Any suggestion or help would be very thankful.
    Regards,
    Shadas.

Apparently I was able to solve the problem. The only thing i do was to uninstall Skype. It seems to have solved. I'm not sure if this happen cause i had installed the Skype through brew cask and therefore I probably didn't have the most recent version of Skype.

  • RMBP Late 2013 crash without log and have to restart by power button

I bought rMBP around November last year.
As I open Chrome, it crash without log.
The only solution is to restart it with power button.
    I can't find the report by chrome://crashes and ~/Library/Logs/.
    I think the kernel_task doesn't make it.
Are there anyone else got the same problem and solution?
Is there a proper noun for crash and have to restart it by power button?
    Version:10.9.1(13B3116)

I would reformat the drive then reinstall Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • RMBP Late 2013 external monitor glitch with Dell UP2715K

I recently picked up the new Dell UP2715K absolutely beautiful 4K monitor, I have however just encountered a problem specifically when using Photoshop mainly when doing skin retouching work with brushes.
When I move the brush or cursor during Photoshop I get black box instead of the cursor and sometimes black lines on the screen. The machine does become slightly laggy also.
These are the specs i'm running on so not an old machine, I also want to add i'm not trying to use the Dell Monitor at 4K either, I was at 2880px wide I think.
    Any help would be awesome.

I have noticed the black box over the cursor on Photoshop CC 2014 only when I have the monitor plugged in. When I unplug the screen it works as normal on the rMBP screen.
I'm not entirely sure what that means, but someone with more knowledge would be able to shed some light on this?

  • Why won't my rMBP late-2013 model charge?

This just started happening in the last 24 hours and it's almost like my MacBook refuses to be charged by my cable or my father's cable. Is anyone else experiencing this?
LED light on charger does not turn amber or green. However, when I plug the cable in, my screen brightness increases but my battery level says "Battery is not charging."
    Help?

    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, there's a problem with your battery or the MagSafe port. As your MacBook is in warranty, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to get it replaced or repaired free of charge

  • 15 inch macbook pro retina late 2013 with uneven LED backlighting

Hi, I have a recently bought a 15 inch rMBP late 2013 model less than a month ago through the apple online store. Since day one, I have noticed a slight grey band of shadow about an inch thick running vertically from top of the screen to the bottom about 2/5 distance from the left. It is obvious when the screen is completely white such as during startup. It is less obvious when the brightness of the screen is turned up. It is not so obvious when viewing picture but I do notice it all the time especially when I do word processing where the background is white.
Is my macbook pro screen defective? Can Apple replace it for me?
    Kindly englighten. Thank you.

Make a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple store. If it is defective, it sounds as if the display itself (and not the GPU) is faulty. Either way, it would be a hardware issue. Apple will replace the necessary components free of charge under your one year limited warranty which comes with the machine.

  • Mbp retina 15"(Late 2013) GT750M driver error

I just got a new rmbp (Late 2013), after I installed windows 7, I got error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered", How can I fix it?

My late 2013 MBP with GT750M had the same problem on windows 7 64bit.. later I found that letting Fraps(framerate display tool) running on the background caused it.
Since I closed Fraps the problem seemed fixed.. I've been running without seeing the problem for a few hours.

  • Ghosting on rMBP 13" late 2013

Just sent in my 1-week old rMBP 13" late 2013 for display ghosting issue (mine was A018- presumedly a LG panel & 3016 produced in late 2012 according to some thread on this forum).
Anyway the staff ran a MRI test which shows
(as printed on the service slip)
-MRI: Sensors testing failed. PBus:10.944 (2x4GB)
    -Image Persistence Test: PASS
Anyone knows what problem does the sensor test coresponds to?
I have never knew of any sensor issue in my one week of usage but I asked her if my display panel would be replaced and she said yes.. is that really true?
Hopefully if so, it would a Samsung panel.

I have thought of doing that as well. But seems quite a hassle to return and then to order another one.
From i can tell or at least infer from other threads, people are seemingly getting Samsung during display replacement, and most of new rMBP (of the cases i know) are shipped with LG panel.
Not too sure if that is Apple's way of doing business and conduct of business ethics, to take advantage of less-informed consumers, and only to replace if they would to send it in for repair.
Still... I'm more curious about the issue for the failed sensor test. hah
    Thanks LowLuster, anyway

  • Does latest version of bootcamp installed on late 2013 rMBP put thunderbolt drivers for lacie external thunderbolt/USB 3.0 drive?

does latest version of bootcamp installed on late 2013 rMBP put thunderbolt drivers for lacie external thunderbolt/USB 3.0 drive?
I am wiping my current windows bootcamp partition and reinstalling windows using disk utility /bootcamp wizard to clean up and reinstall.
just curious if the Thunderbolt drivers get installed from bootcamp/windows sofytware update as I can't remember iif i had to do it manually before. I do see it shows up on windows side in device manager and if it is pluggged in during boot screen (to windows 7 pro 64 bit) shows ASMedia drivers being loaded for it.
    Thanks

thank you so much I was pretty sure it did but wanted to be 100% sure as purpose of clean install was to clean up some mishaps I did with office 2007 (custom install), etc.
    Many Thanks

  • Late 2013 13'' rMBP 4k 60Hz capability

I've been following threads regarding late 2013 (Haswell) rMBP's 4k @60Hz capability. The discussions on those threads have been predominantly revolving around high-end 15'' rMBP equipped with Nvidia 750M gpu because mostly owners of this specific rMBP have been inquiring this capability and only these people seem to own 4k 60Hz monitors-- this is quite natural given the exorbitant price of 4k monitors and considering that these people are after the utmost performance. The thing is, 4k displays will eventually become cheaper and people who are considering buying a Haswell rMBP without a discrete gpu might at least want to know if these rMBPs are future proof in terms of this capability.
As far as I've been following the discussions, the current status of the highest-end Haswell rMBP and accordingly my questions pertaining to lower-end Haswell rMBPs are as follows:
    1) Status:Owners of Haswell 15'' rMBP with Nvidia 750M gpu and 4k 60Hz monitors confirm that they can output 4k @ 60Hz via Windows with their computers on these monitors. So far no one has confirmed if Haswell 13'' rMBPs equipped with Iris (and Haswell 15'' rMBPs with Iris Pro for that matter) has can output 4k @ 60Hz. It might be that these people don't have such a monitor.
Question: Please kindly confirm if you can get 4k@60Hz via Windows if you have a Haswell rMBP without discrete gpu and a 4k 60Hz monitor.
    2) Status: Owners of Haswell 15'' rMBP with Nvidia 750M gpu and 4k 60Hz monitors have started to confirm that they can output 4k @ 60Hz via Mavericks with their computers on these monitors since the release of 10.9.3 beta 13D12 build. Moreover they are confirming that the experience has got even smoother with the 13D17 build of the beta. With the final release of 10.9.3 owners of this rMBP will likely get an immecapble 4k 60Hz experience.
Question: Please kindly confirm if you can get 4k@60Hz via Mavericks 10.9.3 beta build 13D17 if you have a Haswell rMBP without discrete gpu and a 4k 60Hz monitor.
PS. It is contentious whether Iris and Iris Pro are capable of outputting 4k at the 60Hz refresh rate, despite Haswell 13'' and low-end 15'' rMBPs are equipped with TB2 which is in theory capable of 4k @ 60Hz. Despite this, there seems to be conflicting Intel documentation in this regard. Therefore, at this point, not a document, but a confirmation would be much more reliable.
PS2. If the answer to question 1 is positive but negative to question 2, in my opinion this would still be very important because this will prove that Haswell rMBPs without discrete gpus are capable of 4k @ 60Hz, and that if this is possible with Windows, there is no reason it would not be on Mavericks in the future.

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP fan noise even on 2D games

    Hello,
I have the latest model Apple Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. I'm using the basic model with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Haswell i7 cpu with integraded Intel Iris Pro 1gb gpu.
The problem is about the fans. I have never played a game on my mac before two months ago. Since then, when I play the fans get noisy and in a few minutes they start to spin at max rpm about 6000.
I have talked to Apple Customer service and they made me do it sth. like SMC, PRAM etc. However, it didn't fix anything, then I handle my mac to the nearest Apple Store.
They cleaned it and checked the system, according to their said the system works fine. I got it back today and whenever I came, I tried and it happened again.
Just for an instance, I launched "Bridge Constructer Free" game and wait for about 3 minutes. After all, the fans were spinning at over 6000 rpm but meanwhile the system was not hot, it was a bit cool, just about 45 celcius degree.
On the other tasks, like web surfing, playing a full HD video or daily things, it works perfect. I've never heard the fan noise and feel the heat. Otherwise, on nearly every game I played, it happened. Although the system is under 50 celcius degree, the fans used to spin at max rpm.
Also we tried the same thing but it didn't happen on my friend's late 2013 13" rMBP.
This thing really irritates me because it leds to a such noise. Without taking earphones on, I am not able to use the mac comfortably.
Can you help me to solve this issue please?
    I'm adding a screenshot below to see the values;

I am not sure of the thermal limit for the haswell processors, but for Intel's previous generation processors installed in the rMBP lineup, the thermal limit was 100C (212F). Extended exposure to temperatures exceeding this could damage the CPU. What software are you using to manually control the fans? I wouldn't recommend manually controlling the fans. Let the internal heat sensors do their thing. Your rMBP will shutdown if the processor reaches dangerous temperatures for extended periods of time. I wouldn't say that this behavior is abnormal given the amount of heat your GPU generates when rendering graphics intensive games. Just make sure to keep the fan vent unobstructed at all times and a cooling pad never hurts.
Uninstall the software you are using to manually control the fans, reset the SMC, test and see if temperatures fall:
