RMBP Late 2013 Facetime HD Camera Not Working

Hi there,
I have my rMBP since the end of December. When I got it, i needed to update the OS X to 10.9.1. I don't recall if i tried the FaceTime HD Camera later or before the system update, but i'm sure it was working back then.
Now it doesn't work. At least it isn't stable. Some time it works, but very little times. When i turn up the PhotoBooth or any other software (Skype, Messages), the greenlight starts to blink repeatedly and that's about it. I can't see nothing besides black image.
I've been reading in questions simillar to mine it this forum and others, but it seems people with a problem similiar to mine only happened in OS X 10.8.4.
I read in a post ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/24030755#24030755 ) that updating the AppleCamera.plugin, located at /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/ would do the trick. I've tried that, but with no results.
I've also performed a hardware diagnostics test. Didn't have any warning or error. Seems the hardware (the webcam in this case), is running just
fine. If anyone is interesting to perform the same test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5781
Any suggestion or help would be very thankful.
Regards,
Shadas.

Apparently I was able to solve the problem. The only thing i do was to uninstall Skype. It seems to have solved. I'm not sure if this happen cause i had installed the Skype through brew cask and therefore I probably didn't have the most recent version of Skype.

  • Built-in Facetime HD camera not working

My MacBook Pro Retina's (mid 2012) build in camera just works sometimes. After doimg many SMC resets or killing VDCAssistan processes, I've realized that the problem boils down to the device name of the camera.
Here's the situation. When you open System Information and look at the USB section, you're normally supposed to see
    "Apple FaceTime HD Camera"
But when the camera is not working in Facetime, Photobooth or Skype the name I see in my USB device list is ViMicro USB Camera(358boot) and the device is identified as
    Vimicro USB Camera(358boot):
      Product ID:          0x3580
Vendor ID:          0x0ac8  (Z-Star Microelectronics Corporation)
      Version:           0.10
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          Vimicro
      Location ID:          0x1a110000 / 3
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          500
That is a clear indication that OS somehow uses a trick to identify this camera as Apple Facetime HD. I was first concerned that iy was a hardware issue, but then I'm convinced that all the applications look for a "Facetime HD Camera"
14.08.2013 11:24:42,642 VDCAssistant[408]: VDCAssistant:  Found a camera (0x1a1100000ac83580) , but was not able to start it up (0xe00002c0 -- (iokit/common) no such device)
14.08.2013 11:24:42,642 VDCAssistant[408]: VDCAssistant::DeviceArrived  Got error (0xe00002c0), waiting to see if the device shows up again
I'm pretty sure that this is a software issue and started after upgrading to 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 I'm looking forward for apple to fix this. All other remedies are just temporary and does not fix the issue

The problem arises from permission problems on the files/devices the VDCAssistant process tries to access. It's always a good idea to do a "Check Permissions" with Disk Utility on the startup disk after every version update.

  • FaceTime HD camera not working at all?

Recently, I opened up photobooth and tried to use the built in camera on my 13 inch macbook air and while the green light on the camera was on, all that appeared on the screen of photobooth was the rotaingloading symbol. I got in april 2013, so it shouldnt be breaking down already. I don't use that camera very often, so I have no idea when it stopped working for sure, only that it happened after OS X Mavericks. I've tried force quitting everything else, restarting, logging in to a different user, and my computer doesnt have any of the symptoms that might require an SMC reboot. My warranty expired about a week before I became aware of the problem, and if possible, I'd love to have a solution that wouldn't cost me anything. Let me know if you need any more details. Thanks (:

I'm having the same problem on a Mid 2012 MacBook Air that had previously been working just fine. I used FaceTime all the time.
My symptoms are exactly the same as yours; green light, but no camera image.
I have a question for you.
If you select the Apple menu, then about this mac, then click more info, then click on system report.
When the system report appears, click on USB. There are going to be several USB hubs, keep opening them (Clicking the little triangle) until you find an entry that says
    FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)
    Click on that entry.
From there you'll see detailed infor about your camera. It should look similar to the list below.
    Product ID:          0x8510
      Vendor ID:          0x05ac  (Apple Inc.)
      Version:          80.25
      Serial Number:          û ž—ÞÄpõ]v™j
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          Apple Inc.
      Location ID:          0x1a110000 / 3
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          500
What I'm curious about is the Serial Number:   You'll notice mine has no numbers, just characters. These characters change at almost every reboot of the computer.
A wokring camera has a string of numeric values.
I think this too is a symptom of the failure but I want to be sure that I'm not the only person seeing this.
    Thanks.

    Version: 5.16

  • Facetime HD Camera not working on new 27inch iMac

    Hello everyone,
I got a new 27" iMac and can't get the built-in Facetime HD camera working...when I open Photo Booth I just get a gray spinning wheel where my image would usually be.. I tried using it with iMovie, FaceTime, and Facebook and it wont work with any of them...
I went to System Information and the camera is being recognized under USB (FaceTime HD Camera Built In)
Tried restarting it, unplugging everything, creating a new user account...
Not sure what else to do since I have not installed anything yet
Any help would be appreciated...thank you!

Because you already use 10.8.2, unless something is wrong, the requirements for the 10.8.2 update can obviously be met on your startup drive.
Check your startup disk's free space.  Unless your disk has too little free space for the 10.8.2 Combo, your software (or perhaps your disk hardware) may need repair.
If your disk is getting full, increase disk space.
Otherwise, restart Mac from Mountain Lion Recovery and use Mountain Lion Recovery's Disk Utility to repair your boot drive.
Restart normally and try installing the Combo Update again.
[email protected] wrote: ... My old Logitech USB camera wont install either on the Mini.
If you mean that you are trying to install some kind of camera software, don't.  No software other than OS X is needed for any Mac-compatible cam.  Moreover, adding third-party camera drivers or other camera software apps can cause software conflicts.
If you mean that you have already installed some third-party camera software, follow its developer's instructions for uninstalling, and uninstall it immediately.  Then restart normally and try your camera again.
If you mean something else, please explain in different words.

If you're still having trouble, your problem deserves the individual attention it will get in its own thread.
Because your problem is not EXACTLY the same as the OP's here, if you need to write back for more help, please start a new topic here.
To avoid getting recommendations you already know do not help you, list the specifics of all the "stuff" you have tried, including things suggested here.

  • Facetime HD Camera not working. Resert SMC or sudo kill does not work

    Please help me.
    Thanks alot!
I have tried to reset the SMC and doing a sudo kill on the VDCAssistant.
    Both do not work.

    voxk,
it sounds like it’s time to make an appointment with your closest Apple store — perhaps the cable that connects the camera to the logic board needs to be replaced (which is probably something that the Apple Hardware Test can’t detect).

  • FaceTime HD camera not working with Lync

I finally managed to convince IT to get me a Mac instead of the standard (cringe) Dell laptop , but we can't make the enterprise MS Office 365 / Lync video work. This is frustrating for all concerned and threatens to hinder our efforts to expand the Mac pool. There are other bugs in Lync (2011 version is most recent apparently). Skype and Photobooth seem to recognize the FaceTime HD camera without a problem.
There is no System Preferences pane for video (seems a bit strange) and the FaceTime HD camera doesn't appear in the options on the main Lync panel. No video pane or selection for Lync prefs either (see below - seems to be the latest version). Nobody at MS seems to care enough to fix this problem that must be at least 2 years old given the release date. Any help from the Mac community?

Same Issue in MB Air. I have Lync 14.0.7, but no video at all.

  • MacbookPro (Late 2013) FaceTime/iMessage suddenly stopped working "FaceTime Failed"

FaceTime/iMessage suddenly stopped working "FaceTime Failed" although i am calling the same number, what can i do to fix this?

    Hello cameronmhill,
It sounds like you are unable to use FaceTime on your Mac with an error that it has failed. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    FaceTime for Mac: Troubleshooting FaceTime
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4185
Check that your email address is verified in FaceTime > Preferences. If FaceTime > Preferences shows your email status as "verifying," follow the instructions in the verification email that was sent to complete the process.
Toggle FaceTime off and on in FaceTime > Preferences.
If still unable to Sign In follow the instructions in FaceTime, Game Center, Messages on OS X: Troubleshooting Sign in
    Troubleshooting FaceTime for Mac
You can make FaceTime calls using the FaceTime app. You can call FaceTime users whose contact information is in Contacts. You can add contacts and edit contact information in either FaceTime or Contacts. To place a video call, you may use a phone number or email address.
If you encounter issues making or receiving FaceTime calls, try the following:
Verify that FaceTime is enabled in FaceTime > Preferences. If the issue persists, or if you see the message "Waiting for Activation", try toggling FaceTime off and then on.
Verify that the Date, Time, and Time Zone are set correctly:
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences > Date & Time > Date & Time.
    Enable "Set Automatically".
Click the Time Zone tab and confirm the closest city is correct
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • This is what worked for me to install 8.1 Pro on brand new rmbp late 2013 NO WORKAROUND

15 in rmbp, late 2013. Extrernal apple USB drive. USB key for bootcamp drivers. Brand new windows 8.1 pro full version from store. No Upgrade.
Used Bootcamp assistant to 1) save drivers to usb key 2) partition drive to two. Left usb key and drive connected.
Bootcamp assistant reboots mac, windows splash screen. Follow instructions including having to reformat the newly created partition which is usual. No bootcamp parttionn name is present but it should be obvious which is the OSX and Windows partition. Windows begins installing then fails. rmbP is stuck.
Restart nothing, just grey screen. Call apple care. Have to PRM, press on, hold command option P and R keys.Release when apple beep starts. Then it will boot back into OS-X
Boots into osx. Go to bootcamp assistant. Follow instructions and windows partition is removed to give a single OSX parttion. Reopen bootcamp assistant. Repartition. leave USB key and external drive attached. Restart and follow instructions as before. NO issues.
Note, the "almost ready" splash screen hangs for a long time.
Then bootcamp installer comes up. Build 5411.NVIDA driver installed etc. Auto resart after drivers installed. USB drive and key attached. WIndows splash screen. SUCCESSFULLY installed.
OI can also hold down option now on restart to sleect which OS to boot into . WORKS GREAT.
I suspect you have to do a PRM reset after first failure using bootcamp assistant to get it to install properly thereafter.
After I did this I was able to install fine using bootcamp installer in OS-X. No need for ANY work arounds.

This process worked for me on a new Mac Pro (early 2014) to get Windows 8.1 (not 8.0) installed, although I did make one slight change to the process: instead of following your advice at the point: "Restart and follow instructions as before", I instead restarted and used the windows partitioner dialog to 1) delete the bootcamp partition, and 2) create a new partition that was slightly smaller than the remaining available space (by about 1GB). The installer said it might need to create an additional small partition (which it did). I continued with the rest of the install process as you describe above. (Yes, it did take a long time to get past the "almost ready" part.)
Thank you very much for your post!

  • FaceTime camera not working with Skype

Recently I've had trouble with my Facetime/iSight camera not playing nice wth Skype.
The camera works fine with Photobooth and Facetime, but if I try a video call in Skype, I just get the spinning graphic. Doesn't matter how strong the connection is. Until recently, I could get Skype to recognise the camera in the video preferences tab, but now nothing, just blank.
I've tried installing a plugin from Skype that's meant to fix the problem, but still no luck.
    Any ideas appreciated

For Skype specific problems like this, search or post in Skype's dedicated forum.
Also, your OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2) is out of date. Restart Mac, repair disk permissions, and apply the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo).  Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that completes the Combo install.
