RMBP Mid 2014 Windows 7 installer can't create partitions

Hi all,
I have a late 2014 Retina Macbook Pro with 1TB SSD and Intel Iris Graphics (no nVidia). It has been updated to Yosemite 10.10.2.
So for I had good luck installing Windows 8.1 Professional on it via the bootcamp assistant from a USB key. Unfortunately, due to work requirements, I need Windows 7 (compatible VPN clients and proprietary software at a customer). Windows 7 Professional SP1 however won't cooperate. For the record, I off course removed Windows 8.1 first again via BCA.
First problem was that the 16GB Lexar Jumpdrive I used to install Win 8.1 didn't want to boot when it was created by BCA for Windows 7. Even when holding the Option key at boot, it didn't even show in the boot options. Very weird. This was quickly solved by using an 8GB Kingston Datatraveller stick instead which boots fine.
The BCA does all its stuff correctly then but when booting into Windows 7 and starting the install, the Windows installer first complains it must format the bootcamp partition as NTFS. If I then do that, the installer complains it can't create additional partitions.
OK so let's format it to NTFS. Gone is the BOOTCAMP label.
But Windows refuses to install anyway.
I do not have any additional USB drives inserted, nor is there a Superdrive present. Apple support page said to remove any Thunderbolt devices but there are none.
I have looked for similar threads but the reports there are about the fusion drives in the new 5K iMac and Windows 8.1.
So far I have also tried to format the bootcamp partition as ExFat as suggested in other threads but this makes the Windows 7 installer complain it needs additional drivers for CD/DVD and refuses to install.
This is what I see when I hold the Option key during startup when BCA has created the partition and the USB install drive is inserted:
So I'm kind of out of options. Any help or hint would be appreciated!

So this is quite embarrassing. I had already deleted the Windows 7 partition via BCA so to answer your question Loner T, I started BCA again. Unticked create USB installer and download support software and only let it create the Windows 7 partition again. The only difference with last time: I choose 149GB instead of 102GB (thanks to the bloody difficult slider in the BCA).
After bootup of the USB key the install went fine and now I'm looking at a running Windows 7 on my rMBP
Problem is: I have no idea how I solved it. What I did before I posted my question:
- Partition size was 102GB vs 149GB now
- The previous BOOTCAMP partition was erased and reformatted by DiskUtility in ExFat
- It was then removed by BCA
Could this have reset the out of sync MBR vs GPT?
Anyway, it works. Here's the output of the commands:
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
gpt show: /dev/disk0: mediasize=1000555581440; sectorsize=512; blocks=1954210120

So I don't really know what I did to solve this... Maybe one of the utils synced the MBR and GPT again?

  • Windows 8.1 on 13" rMBP Mid 2014 unusable. Slow, choppy audio/video

I've installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my new 13" rMBP Mid 2014 and it runs terribly slow. The mouse movement is choppy and I can't even listen to music, which is horrible. The computer often as if it's running at 100% capacity - even though it's almost idle. If I click a link or press a button the audio track skips and does so randomly, too. On OSX it runs at least 10 times as well/flawless. I saw that some people said Retina laptops are slower with Windows because of the screen, but I'm not even using the Retina screen. I am on a external monitor with a disabled screen.
Check out this DPC Latency Report:
    Troubleshooting attempts:
    - I've checked if there's an update for the audio drivers available and just reinstalled the current one.
    - I've reinstalled the newest Boot Camp Support Software.
    - My OSX version (the one before Yosemite) is fully updated.
    - I've disabled many devices in the device manager (network, audio, sound, etc) to see if it's a faulty driver, but couldn't find it.
Do you also have similar problems with Windows 8.1 on the newest MBP? What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks

On an older 13" 2012 MBP with Intel HD4K. (and an SSD - if there are no paging/swapping issues otherwise), it shows

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

10.5 has not be released to the general public since it is a BETA, so this is not the place to ask for help with this. Since the BETA is available officially for registered developers only, as a registered developer you have direct access to the appropriate Apple personnel for this and access to the developer's discussions area.

I've been trying to install the 10.7.5 update AND an iPhoto update from an App Store notification. Neither are working. I get an "Unknown Error" message at the app store and the following message when I click to install the 10.7.5 pkg:

Any suggestions?  I've seen this problem addressed in other discussions, but none of those solutions seem to work for me.  Thanks in advance.

Hi, it's important to Repair the Disk, or at least Verify Disk before Repairing Permissions.
Also, how much free space is on your Hard Drive?
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Bootcamp Installation rMBP Mid 2014 Chaos

I am trying to install Bootcamp on my friends mid-2014 13" rMBP without success.
So far we have spent 2 nights and 6 hours working on this.  I am convinced there are problems with Apple's Bootcamp Utility and/or firmware.
After successfully creating the USB installer drive, and partitioning the mac, we cannot boot from the USB drive.
I am an advanced user and have tried everything, including different ISO's, PRAM resets, booting from the CD with Superdrive, the whole deal.
What's disappointing is that I'm helping my mate out who is new to the Mac, he still occasionally needs Windows and this was a major feature that led him to switch.  It doesn't make Apple look good.  Obviously, from reading the forums, this is a common and well known issue with the last two generations of rMBP.
We are currently deployed overseas and don't have access to an Apple Store or genius.
I know these are user-forums, but I assume Apple does monitor these from time to time, they would be stupid not to.
    Any ideas?

  • Tecra R10-10W - Can't create partition during installation

I got Tecra R10-10W and I switched from Vista to XP. I used Windows XP Toshiba recovery disk for this.
I was not able to create partition on hdd during the installation.
I wonder did I miss something?
How can I split my hdd into 2 parts? Should I re-install XP for it?
    Please help me?
    Thanks,
    Alper

    Hi!
As Akuma wrote its not possible to create or change HDD partitions during the Toshiba recovery installation.
The Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of factory settings and after this you can change the partition size yourself.
I also use Partition Magic and it works really good. If you dont have this tool you can Google for a freeware tool. ;)

  • Windows 7 setup can't create or see partition

Hi all, I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 SP1 on my late 13 MBP.  I used BC assistant to mount the iso on a 8gb usb.  I have used two different iso files, one from digital river and one from torrents (its not a 'cracked' one or anything, I just couldn't find how to get one from Microsoft.  This one is supposedly the same as the one from microsoft.)  I plan to get a license key from my university once I make sure I can install it. Anyway, I can mount the iso and download bootcamp files using the assistant.  I can make the partition using BC assistant as well, and I set aside 32gb for the Windows partition.  After it partitions, it reboots into the Windows setup.
In windows setup, I pick windows 7 professional 64-bit from the list, hit next until I get to the part where you select the partition (of the four) on which to install Windows.  When I select the BOOTCAMP one, there is the same little dialog text at the bottom as if I had selected a mac partition, saying that it can't install and the partition must be formatted or something.  So I select the BOOTCAMP partition and press Format.  When I press Next, a message appears saying that "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  See the Setup log files for more information."
I have also tried:  unplugging all USB peripherals
using the right instead of left USB port
not formatting the drive and pressing 'next' only
deleting the bpptcamp partition from within windows setup and then forming a new partition and then formatting that
    using both ISO images
selecting each of the four editions I can choose from (home, home premium, pro, and ultimate)
repairing/verifying the mac HD and permissions
Note that every time I re-attempt, I am forced to remove the windows partition and recreate the partition using BC assistant.  In other words, if I quit windows setup and restart, hold down option, and select the windows USB to boot, a different windows setup starts up.  It is similar but has slightly different screens than before, and after I press "install now" (a button absent from the first setup) an error message pops up saying that a CD/DVD driver is missing and I must locate it.  When I try to locate the driver, which I would think would be in the bootcamp folder on the USB, it can't find the USB!  Under My Computer all I see are the C: drive (inaccessible from here) and X:, which I think is the windows partition because it has some of the windows system files on it.  I can't get past this stage of looking for a driver without completely removing the partition and then rebuilding the windows partition using BC assistant.
    What do I do?
If it helps, in the mac os disk utility I can look at the Info for the windows partition, and in the properties it says "Owners Enabled: No, Can be Formatted: No, Bootable: No".  Does that matter?
    Thank you!

I don't have a hub, I will try a usb 2.0 though when I get a chance.  Diskutil list gives:
    #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *251.0 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            218.1 GB   disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
       4:       Microsoft Basic Data                         32.0 GB    disk0s4

  • Display getting wholes in rMBP Mid 2014

My macbook pro retina 13" 2014 model has had something happen to the display, Basically I was at school, going between classes and noticed in my last class 6 dead looking pixels. Upon closer inspection I noticed that they are actually punctured wholes in the display. Behind them is a little dot. When I got home I instantly reported this to apple support and I asked if this is covered by warranty, He said Yes it is covered then gave me a number to call, But they we're closed on the day of report. So the next day I took the computer back to school to find that there were now 20+ of these all over the screen. I called the number to look at it getting fixed I asked if it would be covered again, just to make sure. The guy said "Depending on what the problem is" Well, I have done nothing to cause this. Its like the pixel has exploded and broken the display in some way, but it has kept happening. These wholes are very small, but they draw my eyes to them so im getting it sent in so it won't happen again. The problem is will this be covered? Because I paid $1,650 NZD for this and it shouldn't be happening under 3 months after purchase. Ive been told they remove the whole lid making it cost over $800, so I would not be able to pay for this and its likely to keep happening.

There's a 95% chance that this has nothing to do with you using it, but Apple can't testify it's their fault if they haven't seen the device yet. Bring it to an Apple Store or send it to them so that they can look it up. If the screen is indeed misbehaving, then they'll change it free of charge, and in the 5% chance that it's your fault, they'll be able to explain what you did to make this happen, so you'll fully understand the problem, and they will give you the choice to (pay for the) repair or not

  • Brand new 13" rMBP (mid-2014) doesn't wake from sleep after a few hours

    Hi,
I have brand new, mostly untouched, 13" rMBP running Mavericks (10.9.4) that crashes during sleep. If I close the lid and leave it for more than a few hours, I have to do a force shut down by holding the power button for a few seconds and turn it back on again.
I've already followed the advice of this article: OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake and have called Apple Support, who did nothing but read the article to me.
    I have:
    - reset the System Management Controller
    - restored all defaults in Energy Saver preferences
    - booted into Safe Mode to verify disk (unsure of whether or not this was effective at all)
In my Console, I am getting a line that says "com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure"
According to this other thread - MB can't wake up from sleep anymore - it seems like it might be a hardware failure. Can anyone confirm this and/or advise on possible next steps?
    Thanks.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
