RMBP randomly shuts down - now with red battery indicator at 52%

For the past few days, my mid 2012 15" rMBP has been powering down or sleeping while in the middle of performing tasks, and more importantly when it's ABOVE 15% charge. Just today however, I now have a red battery indication at 52% and holding. The other day I did a search to find out what the issue might be and I didn't find any helpful info. At the time, I had an external monitor plugged into the thunderbolt port closest to the ac adaptor port. I was running Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, but nothing else, and was not connected to the internet. I had turned wifi off. My problems continued until I plugged in. Once on a full charge, I unplugged and the same thing happened all over. Numerous times. So, I disconnected the external monitor, and thought that solved my problem. The next time I used the computer, I put the external monitor into the other TB port and did not have any issues, however I wasn't using the rMBP as extensively.
Today, again while performing tasks such as importing/exporting images with LR & PS, my laptop shut itself down. It runs warm, and fans are purring like crazy, but that's normal for the work I'm doing. Prior to the shut down, the battery read ~24%. I plugged in and woke it up. No external monitor is attached today. I am not running any other programs besides Chrome at the moment. I noticed a red battery light at 52% and it has not changed. Option clicking the indicator shows a "normal" condition.
Can anyone explain what is happening?

  • Powerbook G4 randomly shuts down even with full battery power

I have a three and a bit year old powerbook g4 (my apple care ran out in November) that has recently - as in the last two days - started randomly powering down without warning or error messages, regardless of how much battery power I may or may not have.
A bit of history - not sure what is and isn't pertinent.
I only recently - about six months to a year ago - switched out my recalled battery for a replacement one.
I also received a new power cord under warranty within the last year - but have had no problems before.
Before my powerbook came out of warranty, I took it into my local genius bar to have tests run to see if anything was wrong that I was not aware of, hoping to be able to get it fixed while still in warranty - it came back to me with no repairs and a clean bill of health.
I was on vacation for two weeks, and while on vacation my powerbook sat - powered down - in it's bag untouched the whole time. The problems started (or at least I first noticed them) within a few days after returning.
The other day, before any of this started, I noticed that even though the power adapter was in and glowing, the battery charging icon said "not charging".
The second time the random power-off happened, I did notice that the battery icon had an "x" in it, before it shut down.
The shutdowns are not like proper shutdown processes... one minute the computer is on, the next it's not. It's like the computer thinks there's no power, regardless of the actual charge of the battery.
I use my laptop on a laptop tray to maintain airflow underneath it and reduce overheating, but even so, the laptop seems to get very hot (although this is one of the issues I was worried about when I took it in to the genius bar before the warranty ran out, and they said it didn't get any more hot than they were supposed to), and also the power connector gets very hot. I don't know if overheating might have something to do with it?
So far I haven't noticed if it has happened while I've had the AC adapter plugged in... I think it only happens if it's running on battery, but not completely sure of this.
After the computer shuts down, I can restart it immediately (though these days it is taking longer) and I do not receive any error messages.
I usually turn off my computer when I won't be using it for a while - like before I go to bed or to work.
I recently upgraded my OS from panther to leopard, but was assured that it was compatible. I've had Leopard installed for at least three months, and the problems have only just started, so it probably doesn't have anything to do with that.
Well, that's about every possible piece of information I can think of that might be at all relevant to the situation. Does anyone have any ideas about what's happening? I have a feeling the news is going to be bad and I'll probably have to get a new computer...

Here's the Apple article on how to reset the PMU:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Possibly this might fix the problem. If not, here's a link to the MBP battery program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
This program does NOT apply to your battery, but I think you may recognize some of the symptoms that yours is exhibiting. It also sounds like your power adapter may be getting warmer than it should, but that could have to do with the battery being defective. But if less than a year old, the power adapter should also be under its own warranty period.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could make an appointment with the genius bar. They should be able to evaluate both the battery and the power adaptor by swapping yours out with ones that are known to be good. If not, call Apple.
    Good luck!

  • My iphone 4 shuts down now and then battery is charged

since one week, my Iphone 4 shuts down now and then (randomly). then  I have to push the top button to restart (apple sign) and after 1-2 minutes, its running again with unlocked sim. Can anyone tell me how to fix this. (my iphone 4 is 4 years old and i'm attached to it..) kind regards

    Hi Asem,
From your post I see that your iPhone 4 is unexpectedly shutting down while you're using it.  To help resolve this issue please follow the directions outlined below.
If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it
You might see this unexpected behavior on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you have an older version of iOS. These steps can help.
Make sure that your device is up to date and your apps are up to date. If you still see this issue after updating, contact Apple Support.
Learn what to do if your device won't start up past Apple logo or doesn't respond.

  • HTC ONE randomly shut down now requires password to decrypt storage..

I have had my ONE for a couple of months and had MULTIPLE issues but this one takes the cake!   I was in Wal-Mart and the phone randomly shut down with a full battery.  It would never reboot on it's own so I had to push power down and volume down to get reboot screen.  When it finally restarted, it came up with a screen that says "Type password to decrypt storage" or "place an emergency call".  I never set a password so am unclear on what to do from here.  Tried to factory reset but it doesn't work.  Any advice??

That's pretty strange, dstenz50. It takes a few steps to encrypt a phone http://bit.ly/1kdQYgh and I haven't come across it doing the process on it's own. Has anyone had access to your phone? Did you previously set up a PIN or password to your device? What's the exact message you're seeing?

  • PowerBook shuts down even with new battery

My mom has a 12" PowerBook that she recently purchased a new battery for. Even with this new battery, the laptop shuts down seemingly randomly before the battery gets even down to 20%. They sent a new battery, and the laptop still does it.

  • How I fixed my random shut down from 3rd party battery

So I bought an ebay battery after my original battery died. All went well, and I was in the process of calibrating this battery. As it was charging, it would get held up at 99% (although when I unplugged the power cord, the meter said 100%). After a while, it finally turned green and I was thrilled. Soon after reaching 100% and a green LED light, the computer shut off. I tried to turn it back on but it would shut down again before reaching my login screen, and sometimes after. I plugged in my old battery and used it with the power cord to see if I could find a fix....
I didn't really find anything to help me, so I just left the new battery out, and went to bed.
This morning I took the new battery, held down the button on the bottom ( the power indicator button or whatever) for 15 seconds, put the new battery back in, and started it up. After it started up, I closed the computer and it looked like it shut down again, however, when I opened it back up ( and pressed the power button), it resumed like the battery had been completely drained. After that, the battery started working normal again, and when I close it, wait, and open it, it just resumes as normal.
So, I don't know if this is a permanent fix, but it worked for me.
    Anybody have any thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • IPhone 5s just randomly shuts down

my iPhone 5s just randomly shuts down even though the battery is in 60-70% charged range.
It shows the battery icon with one thin red line, I plug it in to power and a minute later it comes on with battery in 60-70% range.
I cannot figure out what's going on !!

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.
If this does not help, get your phone checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.
You can also contact Apple Support and talk to them. They can check the battery online.
Or visit this page to do that: iPhone - Contact Support - Apple Support
Click on Apple Support, then on ->Battery, Power &Charging ->Battery questions and troubleshooting, and follow the instructions.

  • Powerbook 12 Random shut down issue

Hello, I have a 12" PB with 1Ghz G4 and 752 RAM installed, and OSX 10.4.8. Lately I have been experiencing serious problem with random shut down. Also the battery is not holding its charge properly. Here are the summary of the problems, I am wondering if others also have this issue.
    1. Battery problem. The battery can no longer hold its charge, when it is 100% full, I can only use it for 30 mnts at most. I bought the computer refurbished from Apple in Dec 2003. It has performed flawlessly until a couple months ago. The battery cycle is only 85, but the amount of charge is around 500 ish. I have been trying to discharge it and use it, but it has not helped at all. I zapped the PRAM of the laptop, and it helped a little by making it last 1 hour-ish with 1200 amount of charge. (In comparison my latest macbook pro holds 5500 and last around 3 hours). Unfortunately this battery serial number is not eligible for the exchange program for a new battery.
Is the battery old, and need to be replaced? even when its cycle is only 85?
    2. The second issue I am having is random shutdown. Occasionaly the computer will shut down randomly right after I start it or restart. After I restart it, the desktop will give me a message that the date of the computer was set back, to 1969. I would be able to work for a couple minutes before it shutting down again. I suspect this has something to do with the battery? If I take the battery out, I don't have this problem again. Or is it a motherboard issue? that something is a bit loose inside that I am not aware of?
I still have my Apple Care warranty, should I take the computer to the Apple Genius Bar to have them fix it? Thank you for your help and input, I really appreciate it.

I am thinking about the same thing, I should just get it fixed while it is still under the warranty. Does anyone know if the battery is also under the warranty and they will replace it?

  • My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.  It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • Bold 9650 randomly shuts downs and drains battery

About a month ago my blackberry (which i've had for almost 2 years) started to shut down and the red led light will flash and the loading symbol appears and the phone will start to reboot then stop and keep repeating the process (never getting to the home screen) until the battery is completely drained. The only way i can get the process to stop is if i have a charger on hand but this happens regardless of how much battery I have. Is there any way to fix this or am i just going to have to deal with it until i can get an upgrade?

This may not apply to anyone following this thread - but as I said, my Bold has seemed to need more attention lately.  It also recently came to my attention that I have been missing voicemails.  I use You Mail - have been a big fan and promoted it because I have loved it.  Notice the PAST TENSE...
I was traveling in the month of August; I left one message in the VM box (delayed flight info, keeping for records).  The past week or so my phone freezes whenever I try to listen to my VM, and I couldn't get to the program options - the app was just not working.
Checking recent reviews and comments, I'm not alone.  I went online and saw 4 (four!!) voicemails that never got to my phone, and ended up deleting the app from my phone and going back to Verizon's default VM system.  I may try YouMail again because there are several features I really like, but apparently they weren't working anyway, so.....  I do have a help request in to YouMail support center, we'll see if a new version will work better.
And I'll see how the phone works today after deleting the app.  When a smartphone starts acting up, my first thought is an app causing a conflict somewhere.

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

My Macbook Pro randomly shuts down whilst using battery power even though their is plenty of charge in the battery.
    Any ideas??

does it do it when plugged in?
Also it sounds that there's a power failure and causing it to shutdown, I would get it serviced asap, the battery connector might be faulty.
