RMBP won't even power on after 10.8.3 update

I updated my 2012 rMBP to the latest 10.8.3 OSX release today. Immediately after the update my machine restarted and completed the install. I then turned it off when leaving the office. Got home and tried turning it on a couple hours later. Nothing would happen when hitting the power on button. Plug in the power and the LED wont even come on at all. Any ideas other then taking it in?

I had the very same problem 2 days ago with my 13 inch MacBook Pro Retina Display...I started freaking out as I had a major project due this week saved on it and I thought I had to send it in to Apple (which would have surely so to my grade's demise) .... so I took it in to see a specialist yesterday at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. It was a short wait time as John xxxxxxxxx took a look at my situation. I explained that right after installing the update (all the parts at the same time for the 10.8.3 update on March 16, 2013) everything was fine until I had to go to sleep that so close the lid (sleep mode), when I tried waking it the next morning nothing happened; when I plugged in the charger there was no light on the charger indicating charging, no fan, no motor, no sound, clicking, no light, NOTHING. I was worried all my money went down the drain on an expensive calamity. He asked me if I had backed up my data in case he had to reset it as a last resort, I told him "yes". He claimed 3-4 other customers had seen him with the same problem and said that he may have found a solution.
John xxxxxxxx's solution = shorting the macbook battery, in other words physically opening the macbook (not recommended if a customer is covered by Apple's or Geek Squad's warrantees, PLEASE BRING IT IN TO APPLE AND SUGGEST TO THE APPLE GENIUS OR SPECIALIST 'JOHN'S SOLUTION' AND PLEASE LET THEM DO IT, IT TOOK JOHN ONLY 10-15 MINUTES TO FIX IT FOR ME) and disconnecting the battery and jump start it (restart it), if this fails however, customers may need to seek a new logic board which is on average $750-$800. John stated that the reason that this had to be done was because the MacBook's System Management Controller (SMC) was overwritten to route power to different parts of the board and peripheral ports with this 10.8.3 update.
After taking a look at my macbook's system information we found out that the update is installed, we tested sleeping and shutting down my macbook 3 times to see if the solution was permanent and it is so far (fingers still crossed even now). To be certain he resolved the issue, John went into the BIOS or system manager to run through some test such as internet adapter, internet access, charger test, battery test (to see if my battery passed or failed; IT PASSED), and other tests which were ALL passed. Also, all my DATA is safe and uncorrupted, no DATA was lost......
John suggested for me to spread the word wherever I could (forums, word-of-mouth etc.) of installing updates in pieces as for example this 10.8.3 came in 2 pieces and that I should have done them one at a time and not together... Even though he does not want credit for this fix, I'll give him credit especially where credit is due... Thank you John xxxxxxxxxx from Danbury, C.T Apple Store Genius Bar for fixing this issue you saved my macbook and hopefully many others ........
P.S: John also recommended not to partition Windows 8 on your hard drive as Microsoft uses UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (an encryption boot now used by Microsoft for Windows 8) and MacBooks uses EFI EFI - Extensible Firmware Interface (MacBooks' encryption boot under Mountain Lion OSX); both BIOS' for the Mountain Lion OSX and Windows 8 do not agree and a similar issue of power failure can happen. Windows 8 was made for touch screen laptops and isn't really ready for being partitioned on MacBooks yet. I partitioned Windows 7 Ultimate because of most of my classes in college. Stick to Windows 7 and lower for now.

  • Zen V Plus locked up - is there an emergency reset - it won't even power d

Is there a way to reset the Zen V Plus. Mine is locked up during processing of a line in recording, I think because I must have connected to the computer before it was completly done processing and converting. It won't even power down. Is there an emergency reset or do I just have to wait for the battery to run out? Thanks,Phil

Jason,?Thanks, it just ran out of battery though, so I'll recharge it now. Turning it upside down and setting some weight on top of it to keep the toggle pressed so the screen would stay on helped it run out of battery faster, not very neat solution at all though, so I'll try the reset next time. Thanks,Phil

I could use iPhoto images in Media Browser before the update - is this happening to anyone else?

My iPad won't recognize my wifi password after 7.0.2 update.  The password IS correct, but I continue to get the message that the password is incorrect.  Any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same problem too on my iPad 3. One thing that sometimes works is if you go to the App Store and put your password in there after a few tries it may work.

  • MB won't run from battery after firmware 1.1 update

I know this post is similar to many others on this forum, but I have scoured the other entries and can't find one with my exact problem (or a solution). Sorry if this is a repeat.
My MB has worked fine since I bought it in July. After I installed the MacBook SMC Firmware Update v1.1, however, it randomly decided one day not to run off of the battery anymore. If I plug in the AC adapter, it will boot, run fine, and charge the battery (the menu indicates a 100% charge), but as soon as I unplug the AC adapter the entire system shuts off.
The problem is that I am living in China through July. After working at Apple for nearly 4 years, I was wise enough to purchase AppleCare ... but I can't exactly just hop in the car and take the machine to an Apple Store. Is there a solution for me? Because I'm traveling throughout China, my machine is essentially useless if it has to be plugged in. I'm going to be very upset if an Apple-recommended firmware update rendered my machine unusable.
All applications are up-to-date (OS 10.4.8, Build 8L2127, 2ghz Duo with 1gb RAM).
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a the same problem, at the Apple genious bar a different battery did not work, so they sent my computer in to the subcontractors in Memphis. They kept it less than 10 hours and sent it back with a new battery. The new battery worked for about one month. The funny thing is I am not getting an x on my battery icon anymore. Coconut battery says it is a good battery and is fully charged. I calibrated the battery the first thing when I got the unit back. The system profiler says the battery is present and charged, if the battery should go down just from sitting still, the power adapter will recharge the battery. But, The computer will not run on the battery. If the power adapter is unplugged, which happens about 50 times a day because of the magnetic attachment, the machine turns off. I too developed the probem only after downloading the firmware update that apple said I needed. It is clear from these posts that there is a problem between the motherboard and the battery, and maybe a problem with the battery's calibration software. Judging from the varied responses users have gotten from Apple, and the complete silence about the problem on the Apple support site, it is also clear that Apple either doesn't know what the problem is and therefore can't fix it, or Apple is trying to turn a blind eye to the problem hoping it will go away. These posts have been viewed over 100,000 times, this is not a small problem!

  • Monitor won't enter power save after playing You Tube videos...

    Hi
An issue has  developed on my system in the last couple of months for which, after having done  a lot of research and testing, a solution has not been found. After playing  a video in You Tube, my monitor won't go into power save mode after the  prescribed time. It tries to go off for a second and the screen goes blank but  then comes straight on again. This happens after playing the You Tube videos in  Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I am running Windows XP  Professional and I have the latest version of Adobe Flashplayer installed,  the latest graphics card drivers, the latest version of direct x 9.0c.
To clear this error, I have to go into my XP  power schemes settings and change it to another power scheme and then change it  back to my default power scheme. However, as soon as I play another you tube  video the same problem re-occurs.
I have tried turning off hardware acceleration but this makes no difference. My graphics card is a Gigabyte gv-nx86t512h: http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2604#ov
This never used to happen  until recently. It seems that there is something with the Flashplayer that is  not compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer etc.
Any ideas as to what may be  causing this and what can be done to overcome it would be greatly appreciated as  it is a real nuisance.
    Many  thanks.
    D

    thanks for your suggestions.
i found the solution/workaround from somone else on the adobe forums:
Go to control  panel, display, screen saver, choose a random screen saver, set a long time  (i.e. 60 min, but always longer than your monitor shut off time), then select no  screen saver, and save! Simple as that…

  • Powerbook won't even start up after screen illumination probs

Blah! I have a PowerBook that I bought June 05 and of course the warranty is out. It's recently started doing this weird thing where when it's asleep and I wake it up (by opening and closing the cover) it does not illuminate the screen. Before I would turn it off and on (sometimes a couple times) and it would work again. My friend, who is a Mac pro and who has since moved out of state, reverted it to an older version of the OS then manually updated it (so it's running the most recent version of OSX). Tonight, it wouldn't illuminate again so I tried the old trick. Now it won't come up at all. When I press the power button, I know it does power up and if I look hard, I can see the apple in the first start up screen. But the screen does not illuminate. However, now it shuts itself down and goes no further. So while at first I thought it might be a hardware issue, now I'm not sure.
I have also tried to hook it up to an external monitor and all it does is show a light blue screen then shuts down. It also will not start is safe mode.

Using the external monitor, try this...press the power button to start the PowerBook and then close its lid immediately. Be sure you have a USB mouse plugged into the PowerBook and also have the AC adapter attached. See if that doesn't make the external screen useable. Once the PB is fully booted, you can open the lid if you wish (to use the keyboard).
If the above works and PB seems fine, then you likely have a failed inverter board. The inverter board makes high voltage AC from low voltage DC. The high AC voltage is required to drive the flourescent lamps (also called the backlight) that illuminate the PB's LCD display.

  • MacBook won't even turn on after installing new ram

I am using the 2010 MacBook (white 13 inch) I bought ram (two 2gb modules) and was going to install it. I removed my Original ram, but accidentally powered it on it the process (no ram was inside). I got a longed beep. I held the power button and shut it off. • Please Help! My Macbook won't Power up after I cancelled an update!

I was installing updates on my macbook when i accidentally pressed the power off button. Now everytime I try to turn it on, a screen appears and says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." I have done both and nothing has worked! I have tried to take the battery ou and press for 10 seconds and everything in the book...I dont know what else to do! I have had this macbook for less than a month! Please help!

Take your original DVD installation disk that came with your MacBook and use that to boot your system (turn your system off, GENTLY insert the DVD until you feel a little resistance and then press the power button, then make certain that the DVD has been taken fully into the slot and immediately after that hold down on the "c" key so that the system boots from the DVD) . Once you reach the install screen look for the Utilities menu and select the Disk Utility from that menu. Once you enter the Disk Utility try a verify disk operation and if that reports errors then attempt a repair disk operation. After this, do a verify permissions (from within the Disk Utility) and repair those if needed. After this quit the Disk Utility and when you return to the installer screen quit the installer while holding down on the mouse button (or trackpad button), the latter will cause the DVD to be ejected and the system will again attempt to boot from the internal hard drive.
If after these operations you still can't boot from your hard drive then you will probably have to do an archive and install using your original installation DVD.

  • Macbook won't even power on

    Hello All,
I am pretty sure I know the tragic answer but I wanted to see what you thought.
I left my macbook on last night to do a time capsule update and when I woke up it was the macbook was off. I attempted to turn it on, but the only thing that happened was a very very soft clicking noise. No power on or gray screen or apple, just the clicking noise. Battery is full and AC adapter is connected. This means a dead hard drive yes?
I tired resetting the PMU and everything else Mac suggests. I am out of warranty so I thought I would see what you had to say. Thanks.

This means a dead hard drive yes?
No. You could simply have a bad battery. How old is the unit? If it has a lot of load cycles on the battery, it may have just went bad. I would try a new battery.

You must be kidding to try to have your system powered by this kind of psu. I used better ones for Athlon XP 2000+ systems.

  • Even more issues after installing 3.1 update.  What to do.

    HI there,
It would seem that since I have installed 3.1 my iPhone 3Gs 32GB white is acting very strange. Heres my story...
I have noticed the following behavior since the install. Sound randomly not working. Home button randomly not working.
    Have done a Restore
Have removed all my applications thinking maybe an app was not compatible with the 3.1 update and therefore was causing the problems.
... still noticed home button issue even after removing all apps.
... sound issue happened once but seems OK now.
I have read other postings about these two issues. It would seem others are experiencing the same problems. However, I found no fix for it. That is why I thought it might be an app interfering.
As I said it still happens at random times but lately it has been working fine so I am wondering if it was an app I had installed.
Just to add some history, this is my 2nd iphone as I had a problem with my 1st one. The one I am currently using was sent to me by my Wireless provider and it was refurbished. So I am wondering if the randomness of the home button was the reason this iphone was returned in the first place. And the problem is reoccurring. Or is it just consequence that it is happening now after I installed the 3.1 update.
I have made an appointment at my local Apple store(genius bar) for them to have a look at it, however my luck is when I go the phone will be working fine and they will not do anything. The phone is not three months old so I fall within the 90 days warranty and I just purchased the AppleCare for iPhone as backup. I am hoping I will get a new iPhone to replace this one because it was refurbished.
    So my question is
Do you think it was an application that was causing the issue or could it be a hardware problem with the button? Is it known fact that some iPhone apps are not 3.1 compatible and can cause issues?
Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Possible but the Apple store visit is the right way to go.

  • IPod Touch won't rotate to landscape after 3.1.3 update??

    Please help me :(!
I installed the 3.1.3 update last night and ever since, when I turn my iPod horizontally it will not go into landscape mode in Safari or Music or anything. If i watch a video or use an app that requires it to be in landscape mode it works fine, it just won't turn at my will, I know I am turning it right.
I just bought a new iPod after my other one broke after two years of use and I have only had it two weeks!
    Please help me out here.

Oh thank goodness. I thought it was just ME. My iPod is doing the exact same thing. If I use the youtube button it will rotate no problems, but any apps I have that are rotate sensitive won't work, and if I'm using Safari and try to use landscape, it won't turn. I've been looking for an answer for this ever since I noticed and can't seem to find anything about it. Last night I finally made a backup and did a system restore from it, but of course it restored it with the 3.1.3 update so fail again. Then I restored to factory specs and it still installed 3.1.3. My next try is going to be a system roll-back to 3.1.2 as soon as I figure out how to do that. If that fails and I can't get any help here, my only other solution might be to take it in to an apple store. The closest one to me is about an hour away I believe. ***** so bad.
