RMS Metering
So, to this point I've been ball-parking my levels using the meters on the Logic mixer. This is mainly because I did want to enable software monitoring in order to insert a level meter (this would require me to mute all armed channels when recording dry because I monitor through the 828). So I've been monitoring using peak instead of RMS.
On Friday I decided to try things "the right way" because I wanted to finally meter my input levels using RMS instead of peak. So I enabled input monitoring, inserted a Level Meter on the channel I was recording on, switched that meter to show RMS, armed the track, hit record and...nothing! I was getting sound to disk and everything, but the level meter stopped working as soon as I hit record on the transport. With the transport idle or in play and the track armed, I see levels on the inserted meter, but not in record.
What am I doing wrong here? I've recorded plenty of time with input monitoring enabled when I want to hear reveb or delay while I'm tracking. I've just never set up meter when doing so. Yes, I'm lazy.
Also, that got me thinking, wouldn't it be nice if I could just set the Logic mixer to show me RMS instead of peak? And wouldn't it be nice if we older, then we wouldn't have to wait so long? OK, all Beach Boys aside, it would be nice to see RMS in the mixer.
Create an Input object in your environment and insert your level meter there, this will display the level you're actually recording.
If you want to see that Input object on your Arrange just right click/control click on the
Input object->create Arrange track.

I don't understand why I am not getting decent levels through logic audio and maybe someone who knows my set up can assist as I am sure it is easy solution
When i record using a mic into logic via the Motu I get the leds lighting up nicely through the MOTU and also the software interface. But In the logic Audio trackmixer the signal is coming through very low and I have to normalize the file every time.
I am assuming that i need to set up the levels through logic? As even when I peak the trim knobs on the MOtu and get feedback I still dont get a signal through a decent volume through logic
Any ideas?
Thanks in anticipation CarloThe level meters in logic are peak meters (0dbfs), not rms meters. I would check your interface and make sure you have it setup correctly.
Is it a MKI or MKII 828 interface? How are you connecting your mic to it? A little more info might help solve your problem.

Pre-fader vs. post-fader metering
I generally avoid any internal clipping on my virtual instruments by making use of logic's pre-fader metering option, is this really necessary?
Which is best, mix post fader and forget about internal levels of plug-ins, instruments etc. or always make sure there is no internal clipping?

I used only a drum kit from battery 3 with a simple riff. Pushed the plug-ins overall volume to +6.0dB and then made sure my post fader level wasn't clipping, both of them then got mastered using ozone 4.
Both of the tracks reached the same RMS level, neither of the two sounded louder than the other.
The one I pushed up in the plug-in sounded a bit squashed and not as clear or pure as the one that considered the pre and post fader metering. The drums sounded way more defined and clear when ensuring both pre-and post metering wasn't clipping.
It does seem that by ensuring none of your virtual stuff clips internally you get purer sound.
Of course I am sure you could still get a great sound if you internally only pushed it over by 2dBs. Still think it's best though to mix pre and post as a rule. Any comments?

again, i would agree with BeeJay's original reply to the original post. it's not good practice to let internal levels fly out of control and there's really no good reason to. and i would also agree that keeping levels lower result in better quality mixes. -
Low 'levels' in logic meters???
Why are the readings on the channel meters so low in Logic?
The meters on my fireface total mixer are much higher than in logic... why is that? Any way to fix this?same problem with motu 828. try this, run a steady state signal into your box.(a test tone oscillater is the best tool for tests like this), by this i mean a sustained note(C6 Roland) from a keyboard organ patch wuth no modulation. make sure the input sensitivity on your box matches the keyboard's output as much as possible. latch the key so it sustains (sustain pedal) and get the input meter on your box to read "0".(just touching the red.) switch to output on box and trim so that you get the same reading.(near "0"). Oh, and turn your speakers OFF whilst doing these tests. next, send this signal to logic, assign it to a track. make sure pre fader metering is on. what ever signal is displayed on the track meter is a PEAK reading, not RMS!
all my boxes show similar readings to yours. consider the gap in logics track meter as your headroom.
a steady state tone is not a real world signal, so upon recording percussion(for eg) you will have to back off you input trim on your hardware box.
make sure your MONITORING set up is POWERFUL enough to be used for all stages in the recording process. bookshelf and pwrd monitors might not be "loud" enough. DJR

Does anyone knows how to set the RMS levels to fall between -20db and -15db in Logic pro x?
I thought to provide some more information.
I need to set up the RMS level of one audio track to fall in between -15db and -20db.
This is what I do:
I am checking the RMS through the level meter under metering before using compression.
I change the setup of the compressor (the threshold, while my RMS box below is checked) to fall in this range (-15db to -20db).
After changing the compressor set up I go back to check the RMS level under metering. Nevertheless, it does not change anything.
Am I doing something wrong?
Any ideas on how to do it right! How to set up the RMS level? -
How is TOTAL RMS different than AVERAGE RMS
I create spoken-word recordings. One company that I work with specifys that the recording should be at a level that measures between -23 RMS and -18RMS. It appears that audio editing programs label their RMS readings in various ways. I had been using Average RMS but I think maybe this company is using a standard that comes closer to what ADOBE calls TOTAL RMS. What attributes cause Audition to give one value to AVERAGE RMS and another value as AVERAGE RMS?
Total RMS used to be what happens if you add together all of the signals in your measuring time window (in Audition normally 50ms), and perform a RMS calculation on them, and that was a pretty standard way of measuring it. Average RMS in Audition is a little different, though. Reading through the somewhat cryptic help files about this reveals that to all intents and purposes, the RMS measurements will vary at different levels, because some attention is being paid to either Noise Criteria or Noise Rating curves. The lower the level gets with these, the more they favour lower frequencies over higher ones; in other words the figures reflect human annoyance factors rather than a specifically defined measurement criterion. And no, we can't tell you exactly how this is going to work, because the actual curves and weighting figures have never been made public, and it would take me several days to second-guess it from comparative readings. I simply don't have time...
It's been like this for ever. The original design of this was done by David Johnston, the program's original creator when it was Cool Edit, and I belive he's no longer associated even indirectly with Audition these days. Whether information about this is actually documented anywhere at all, I don't know. Questions about it come up periodically, and we can never answer them satisfactorily.
The original Cool Edit manual was just as useless about this. The exact words it uses to describe the Average RMS measurement are "Average RMS Power represents the average power of the entire selection. This is a good measure of the overall loudness of the waveform selection." And it's these words I've bolded that make the difference.
What happens with Total RMS measurements now seems to be a little different, and you end up with a figure much closer to a LUFS reading (you get this acccurately at the bottom of the statistics panel in CC). I know (because this is relatively recent) that the way the LUFS figure is calculated is according to the BS1770-2 standard - and that takes the whole program dynamics into account. What appears to happen with Total RMS in Audition is that it appears that an average of all of the windowed measurements, and that this in general turns out to be pretty close to the LUFS value as a rule.
Now, judging by the numbers they've quoted, the chances are that the company you are working for is using the recent standard for what you're doing - so if you are using CC, then it's pretty easy - select the whole waveform and quote them the value shown at the bottom of the screen. If you aren't using CC then there are several free LUFS meters available as VST plugins.
My personal view on this new standard, FWIW, is that it's a complete waste of time. It certainly doesn't achieve what it sets out to, or failing that all the broadcasters that use it have no idea what to do with it. And that very much includes the BBC, I'm afraid. The standard is supposed to keep overall programme dynamics within a certain loudness range, and save viewers/listeners having to adjust volume levels between programmes. And, it fails at that pretty comprehensively. Quite frankly, when it comes to broadcast dynamics standards, they'd have been better off forcing everybody to use the same settings on an Orban Optimod; that would almost certainly have worked better! -
Can anyone tell me how to get precise information on continous (RMS) levels of a bounced audio file? Need to know this so I can create the tight sounding mix I want, and still leave enough headroom for mastering....

It has options for both fast and slow metering times and the stereo master level section on the right of the plugin interface shows peak/rms on the bottom of the meter so that must serve the dual purpose. I believe they are multi colored levels to distinguish between the peak and rms. Or one reads the peak level on the outside meters and the rms on the inside meters or something like that....hence the name "multi-meter" (in addition to correlation of stereo image).

For instance: Can I use an adapter between the Minidisplay cable and a 15 meter long HDMI cable?
Or could AppleTV be a (wireless) solution to the problem? Can AppleTV only interface sound to an amplifier through the optical interface? Are there adapters between optical and good old phono connectors available?
I guess I could also use a Mac mini, which has an HDMI port. But since I want an Apple monitor with a Mac Mini and 27" is too big for my work place, I can't seem to find a smaler Apple display than the 27"Thunderbolt or LED Cinema screens. Is that really so? No smaller Apple displays available any more?
If none of the above solutions are good: I am open to all good suggestions to how I can have a Mac workstation (iMac, Mac Mini, others) that is also connected to my HDTV, 15 meters away from the workstation.
joeIf indeed you have a Netgear Hub, then that is the wrong piece of network equipment. If it is a Virgin Netgear router, then that will work. The connection must use a router.
Unfortunately, there is no software from HP to help you install this printer (assuming your new iMac has OS 10.8). So, we will have to do it manually:
1. Reset the printer. Pull the power cord out of the back of the printer for 30 seconds.
2. When the printer turns back on, on your Mac look for a wireless network that begins with 'hp", likely "hpsetup". Join it.
3. Print a Wireless Network Test from the front of the printer. Note its IP address.
4. Type that IP address into Safari web browser.
5. Navigate to the Network or Wireless tab and look for Wireless Setup Wizard. Run it.
6. Finally, connect your Mac back to your regular wireless network, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan and add the printer with the '+' sign.

A problem about the policy of RMS which is added more than 500 principals

I've a question about RMS , when I added more than about 500 principals (users & groups ) into a policy in the RMS , it will report an error for any operation about the policy , and I find the error message as followed (for theconvenience, I paste all of the logs in the weblogic).
We have tested all of our environments : Weblogic , JBoss , Websphere , each of them makes the same mistake . those operations include : try to open the documents protected by this kind of policies , to disable or enable the policies, to look the detail from the "adminui" . when decreasing the principals for this kind of policy to almost 450 (I am not sure the clearly number) with java code , the results will be ok .
So anyone can help me ? It's really very important for us , becuase our customer refused to pay the left money of this project till this problem is resolved . and I have reported this problem to the Enterprise Support in Indian (the case is :181916446), but , obviously , it seems they are burning my patience . At the same time , I think it's a problem of the product , I think the SQL is really very bad ,at least , not so good .
Any help will be very appreciated !

Unable to run AD RMS Console because of the error

i am new to AD RMS and i have faced a problem at the start :-)
i followed the steps which exist in MSpress 70-640 R2 training kit book to install AD RMS in my win 2008 R2 server. the installation successfully finished, but when i run AD RMS Console i face with this error :
A connection with the specified AD RMS cluster could not be established for the following reason:
The request Failed with http status 401 : Unauthorized.
ensure that your conection is correct prtocol,such as HTTP or HTTPS , and the port number is correct.
my servers are so :
one DC -
one server which i first installed AD CS with WebEnrollment ( so that installed IIS ) and then on this server i installed AD RMS ( as stated in 70-640 R2 )
my there be conflict in my IIS because of installing ADCS with Web Enrollment component and then installing AD RMS ?
anyway how should i get ride of this error ? i can't access inside the AD RMS Console and continue
thanks in advanceCorrect. When you install ADRMS there is a local group created called "AD RMS Enterprise Admins". Your account is added to that group. If you do not log off and back on after the installation, OR, if you try to log into the console as a different user than
you installed the role as, you will see that error.
Obviously for you the answer was to log off and back on, but otherwise, make sure the account you are logging in as is added to that local group.

How do I setup an RMS Vi to just do a RMS calculation on just a specified part of the waveform?
I want use an RMS vi to calculate the RMS value of an incoming waveform. I only want to do this calculation on a specified part of the wave form, so it can be used to create a beam pattern for a sonar transducer. Can anybody out there help me with this problem. For instance I would like to do the RMS calculation 1.5ms to 1.7ms
You can extract the part of interest of your waveform before calculating the RMS value. Use the Waveform tool VI called Get Waveform Subset.vi located in the Waveform Operations palette. In your case input Start = 1.5 ms, Duration = 0.2 ms and make sure the Mode parameter is set = Relative Time.

Office files protected with AD RMS Client / SDK and Office

I'm facing a strange issue when it comes to open an office file that was protected with AD RMS Client (to be precise, with an application built with AD RMS SDK 2.1). I would like to understand the reasons behind this issue (maybe some missing or wrong configuration)
or if this is just a gui only problem that does not affect the correct behaviour of the whole suite.
I'm not using templates.
If I protect an office file directly from MS Word (for example, but we have the same with Excel and Powerpoint) and save it, then I can close it and re-open it. The following infobar is displayed:
Now with AD RMS SDK 2.1 we have developed a standalone program that applies the same permissions on office files via the AD RMS Client. When the file is re-opened, the following infobar is displayed:
"Do Not Forward" is shown, no reference to email permissions was added by the client. The description is wrong too, as print permission has been granted, for example.
Is this behaviour correct?
How is this infobar created?
Is there a setting (either in client or in server) that may be wrong, and that leads to this issue?

The license handle needs some additional properties to be set, in order for Office to display this information correctly.
IpcSetLicenseProperty(licenseHandle, FALSE, IPC_LI_DESCRIPTOR, pIpcTemplateInfo);
The last parameter is a PIPC_TEMPLATE_INFO pointer to a structure of type IPC_TEMPLATE_INFO where
wszName and wszDescription are filled with valid values. -
How can I use the RMS.vi over more than one period?
Hi everyone,
I am using the Cycle average and RMS.VI to get the RMS value of a alternative voltage (2kHz). To acquire this signal I am using a differentiel AI of a 6225 card (at 250kS/s) and the RMS value is correct, it works fine. However from what I have understood, this VI calculates the RMS value according to only one period no matter how many samples I have acquired (2000 samples in the VI I have attached). Is this correct? If so, is ithere a way to use it over all of the 2000 samples to get a more averaged value? Or does another VI exist?
I could repeat several time an acquisition of a short number of samples (a period) and make an average but it would take some time and I have to do this with 39 other Inputs on the same card one after the other...

The RMS and RMS Pt. By Pt. work for me, but it depends on how you break out that Dynamic Data from the Express VI, which was why I suggested you didn't use it - mainly because you can't tell what happens to that data when you wire it to a function and it coerces. Actually, I should say, I can't tell what happens to it. You may know, but I don't.
In the attached screenshot, I have "made" a 2k sine wave with an amplitude of 5. The indicators show RMS value.
