RMX in Logic 8 as multi-timbral or multi-output?

Hi:
I downloaded the latest RMX for Logic 8. ( I've used RMX in Logic 7 a lot).
But, I'm not sure how to use it. If I open RMX as a multi-TIMBRAL instrument, 8 tracks show up in my arrange window, but they don't seem linked to RMX like in Logic 7 (e.g. midi tracks). Parts aren't ruted to them, and messing wif the RMX mixer doesn't seem to help.
And, if I open RMX as a multi-OUTPUT and set up some auxes with the + button, RMX channels 2-8 don't play through the auxes. It's as if they are not there. And there's no additional channels in the track windows, so I can't see regions for each part.
Ideally, I'd like 8 tracks in the arrange window for working with regions, and 8 channels in the track mixer for processing (although I'm OK just processing within RMX if necessary).
Can someone tell me the proper way to set up RMX in Logic 8? What have I missed (hoping not to open environment and relive the **** of setting up RMX in L7).
Thanks!!

Thanks for sticking with me Christian. I'm still messing with it. Still no luck. I've created multi in environment (followed video). Created multi in arrange, clicked + in mixer. I get a lot of things that look like RMX. So far:
- I can't get a master track in arrange or mixer, I can't get midi tracks in arrange, and I can't get RMX channels to distribute. It's screwed.
Would you mind telling me the steps you took? I must be doing something wrong.
BTW, yes I do have 1.6.1.

  • Automation, Logic 8, Halion Symphonic Orchestra & Multi Timbral Issues

Hi, I'm a basic Logic Pro user who is used to recording and mixing between 4-8 tracks of drums, keyboards, guitars etc.
(I bought Logic 8 many years ago and use it for what I need but not much more.)
A few years ago I was given the Hal Leonard Score for Raiders of the Lost Ark and, as a project, I wanted to attempt to recreate some of this (around 1min 30 sec) using a dedicated track for each orchestral instrument (with a concession where the score referred to an orchestral section and HSO had such a section)
To cut to the chase, I am revisiting the project and am having the problems I outline below.  I'd really appreciate anyone's guidance on where to go next with this.  Am hesitant to go to Logic X as my VST isn't supported and hence more cost but happy to be convinced this is the best/only option.
    Current MacBook Pro:
    Running OS X v10.8.5
    Proc: 2.9GHz Intel Core i7
    Mem: 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Logic Pro 8.0.2 (1502.22)
Halion Symphonic Orchestra 3.5.0.592 32-bit VST
    Project:
    3 instances of HSO running
Tracks inserted into Logic using the multi-timbral option to conserve memory/processing
In total 36 instruments across these three instances
In my efforts to introduce some dynamics around the volume or modulation I tried my hand at automation for the first time.
As anyone who has used Logic 8 in this way might tell you - it doesn't let you automate at the individual multi-timbral instrument level but at the master level for the HSO instance
This has essentially scuppered my plan to get into the mixing and dynamics here.
I've read some forum posts about creating additional AUX channels where apparently it will let you automate but (aside from a broken URL or two) I didn't get any specfic instructions on how to achieve this.
Does anyone know if there is a definitive article on what I'm wanting to do?
I was considering updating my software to Logic X but I know this would not support HSO here as its a 32-bit plug in.
Does Logic X behave differently in this scenario than its predecessor?
I hear Logic X has its own orchestral library - anyone know how good it is?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Steve
(my OS level appears wrong below but it is OS X 10.8.5)

I decided to try an experiment: 36 instances of HSO each with one instrument. It works.  Not elegeant I grant you but its not maxing out the memory (4GB free) or CPU so I can now concentrate on learning how to automate modulation, expression, volume to make it sound more dynamic.
A bit sledgehammer to crack a walnut and I'm sure there's something out there I could have tried to make it work as it was originally set up but this'll do for me to be going on with....

  • Using EXS24 as a multi-timbral instrument?

Just wondering if there is any advantage to using the EXS24 as a multi-timbral. I've got a fairly muscular tower with 10 gigs of RAM, and have been using EXS simply as a single track plug-in, thus having three or four going at once.
Any advantage to going multi-timbral? And where might I find instructions in the manual? I'm using Omnisphere and RMX, which both have their own mixers ... so I can't quite figure out how one would do multi-timbral with the ESX.
    All ears...
    Ben

You can't place different instruments on different MIDI channels all in one instance; it's designed as a mono-timbral sampler, but with multi-outs. It's efficient too, so multiple instances is the way to go.

  • Multi-timbral EXS24?

I cannot figure a way (or find it in the manual) on how to set up the EXS for multi-timbral operation. I see how to set it up for multi-outputs (for drum sounds apparently).
Have I missed some really basic thing about it, or is it a single-patch-at-a-time sampler?
I'd like to be able to load 8 different patches, without loading 8 instances of it. Is that possible? Just point me at the manual if necessary...

    The EXS24 is not a multitimbral instrument, it's a
    highly-efficient, mono-timbral instrument.
Load your Piano in an EXS24 on audio instrument
    one,
your bass in a second EXS24 on audio instrument 2,
and so on. It uses the same resources as a
multitimbral version would, with the benefits of
individual mixer channels, invidiaul freeazing and
    so
on, which you cannot do with multitimbral
    instruments.
Ouch! This is of course correct.
Note to myself: Do not answer questions before the
    coffee has kicked in.
    Hi,
The above are good points. This is why I think there must be
more audio instruments in Logic Pro, 128 is not nearly enough.
Any way, I would say that the EXS24 is sort-of multi-timbral.
Here are two recent posts which touch upon this issue.

  • How does volume automation work with multi-timbral instruments?

I have Garritan Aria player as an AU plug-in. I launch it as a multi-timbral instrument and 16 tracks appear. I load instruments from Garritan Personal Orchestra into the player and record parts on the tracks. So far so good. I can get a rough overall working balance easily enough with the Aria faders - but then I want to use volume automation to do the detailed mixing (boost the oboe, dip the brass for that bridge passage, etc). It doesn't work. Anything I do to one track affects all the others - they are all reading & responding to nodes placed on any of the tracks, so I don't have individual control of instruments. Help! - what am I doing wrong? I've tried using Hyper Draw instead - this seems at first to offer individual control; but if I enter node data on more than one track at the same place in the music (boost oboe, dip brass) the channel fader goes crazy - which isn't at all what I want. It looks to me that because the 16 inputs are all assigned to the same synth, the channels are locked together as a group, so level changes entered on any one track are applied to them all. That's silly, so I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone help?

OK, I'm nearly there, I think, but it's a bit weird (I'm using Logic Pro 9.1.8). I can record to the aux tracks (I'm just entering note data on the piano roll, just to test it), but all the sound seems to be routed just to Aux channel 2. If I solo the Instrument channel, I hear all tracks together. If I solo Aux 2, I hear the same thing. If I solo any other Aux track, I hear silence.
    What I've done:
    1. start a Logic project, with one software instrument
    2. insert Aria player, as multichannel, 16x mono.
    3. open the Logic mixer and click the + button at the bottom of the channel several times to add aux tracks (they come up Aria Player 2, 3, 4 etc, routed to Stereo Out)
4 ctrl-click on each channel and select 'create/select Arrange track'
5 insert instruments into Aria slots, leaving them as default (Output 1/2 for all, midi channel 01, 02, 03 etc)
6 enter note data on piano roll for the instrument track and each aux track
The instruments are correct for each track, but, as I say, I can only hear them as a mix on Inst 1, and as a mix on Aux 2 (track 3). I can't hear the solo output of any track. It's a mystery to me why this is happening, and why it is Aux 2. Am I missing something?
    cheers

  • Multi-Timbral track automation with VIRUS TI

Hello, My name is Joao and I bouth one VIRUS TI and I am experiencing one problem related with track automation on Logic 8.
I want to know how can I make independent automation for each track that I had created on Logic. For example, when I create one Multi-timbral track, the first automation goes to all of the other 15 tracks at the same time.
If you need any additional information, do not hesitate to contact me.
    Best Regards,
    Joao.

Yeah that's a known problem with some 3rd party plugins. Assign the different sounds to different Outputs/Auxes instead, and write your Automation into the Auxes.

  • Mainstage as Multi-Timbral Instrument via IAC Driver

I'm trying to use Mainstage as a multi-timbral instrument driven by midi sent from Pro Tools via IAC. I was assuming I could assign different midi channels to each instrument channel in Mainstage; however, IAC doesn't appear in the multi-timbral input list dialogue. i.e., all instrument channels play no matter how I set the channels.
Anybody having success running multiple channel instruments in Mainstage with different keyboards or with different midi channels via IAC driver?
    -deloise

Mike, any particular reason why you want to use MS simply as an AU host? It uses a heck of a lot of system overhead just to be used as a host.....you'd be far better off using something like Plogue Bidule for this as the resources used by Bidule are negligible compared to a resource-hungry behemoth like MS. Unless you're also going to use MS for the purposes for which it was intended, and/or use some of its other features, it'd be crazy just to use it as a host.

  • How mute a Single Midi track instead of all when using multi-timbral instrument

I added a Multi-Timbral Instument, opens up 16 midi channels. When i want to mute/solo just one of those 16 midi tracks, all of them are muted/solo-ed. How to mute/solo them individually?

If you have only one single mono audio track then duplicate it (select audio track then hold down SHIFT and OPTION/ALT key simultaneously and drag the mono audio clip down to the audio track below, it will give you a duplicate) after doing that select and double click the duplicated mono track and in the viewer Pan that hard right (1). Finally select both audio tracks and hit Option+L. You now have stereo pair.

  • Multi-timbral managing in MS

    Hi,
I'm trying to find about how to control in independent way instruments within multitimbral instruments
This is what I want to achieve and didn't find the way to :
To make it simple, I have loaded 3 instruments inside 1 instance of Kontakt : Piano, Bass and Pad.I made a channel strip that I will call "main (Kontakt) channel strip" with mentioned Kontakt with 3 instruments within...
Now i want create a patch with piano in it.I create it and I copy an Alias of my main(Kontakt) channel strip, and I  set the
instrument which will be controlled by my keyboard(only 1 keyboard in my set), in this case instrument number 1 : piano.
It works, until now everything work perfect.
Now i need to have a patch with Piano and Pad in addition. So I need to create a patch with those 2 instruments. So here start my problem : how can I obtain a patch using Alias of my main Kontakt channel strip that ables me to play my instrument 1 and 3 at the same time (in this case piano and pad) and without playing the Bass who is also loaded in my Kontakt instrument. My goal is to have complete independent control of those three instruments, including volume and instrument name if possible.
    Thanks for sugestions

You can do this (using Alias Channel Strips or otherwise) by setting the Strip up with Multi-Timbral MIDI Input:
This one has 3 channels setup for Kontakt
This one, has only two channels set up:
To get "full control" of the individual part volumes etc, you could setup multiple Alias Strips (one for each part) as suggested, or you could make use of:
    a) Kontakt multi-outputs for each part
    b) Kontakt Host Automation Parameters for each part
    c) Kontakt MIDI Learn for each part
Then set up Screen Controls to suit (or use the Assignments and Mappings pane to do it without Screen Controls).

  • Multi-Timbral Automation

    Hello,
Is it possible to automate individual tracks separately when using multiple instances in a multi-timbral track? I'm using Miroslav Phil.
    Thank you!

Yeah that's a known problem with some 3rd party plugins. Assign the different sounds to different Outputs/Auxes instead, and write your Automation into the Auxes.

  • Multi Timbral Instruments

I am having a problem whereby selecting the instrument track for any multi-timbral instrument (I use Stylus, MSI, and Ethno amongst others) plays MIDI track 2 on the instrument, not 1. I have made multi instruments in the environment for these multi-timbral instruments and can access any channel on them via individual MIDI tracks, but does anyone know how to set it so that the default MIDI channel for the instrument track itself is 1? I'm sure it has something to do with the environment, but I can't seem to figure it out.

If you check the environment object, you will probably find that you left the channel 2 "button" engaged. You need to clear it (not sure how) or create a new multi-instrument object and make sure that no midi channel is highlighted, of if one it, it's channel 1.

  • Stylus rmx and logic studio 8

i need help asap pleasseee...i am using 8 tracks multi timbral for stylus rmx...and everything is good but there is one problem, anytime i do anything to one track it does it to the other...for example: if i mute one of the tracks then it mutes all of them....i want to have full control of each individuak channel....does anybody no the solution for this...thanx

Yes creating the RMX as a multi is the best solution. Depending on how you are using RMX, a multi may be the best solution.
A work around is to create a stereo RMX and make several copies of it.
As you work with RMX on each of its channels, drag the midi file from RMX to an empty Logic RMX slot. If you open the event list to the right of arrange, you will see, that each corresponding channel from the RMX, is on a different midi channel. So although all your several tracks of RMX are the same, (make sure RMX is set to ALL channel), each individual track on the arrange pages is sending on a different midi channel
So if you want to isolate one channel, to edit or to mix one individual part out - mute the others out either on the RMX. or Highlight the REGIONS on the arrange page and mute them. Do not mute module or you will get no sound..
You do get fuller control if you set up a multi channel instance of RMX (say you want to eq, and compress each track of RMX individuallly in Logic) - but you have to go an extra step to turn each individual track into seperate audio, so sometimes the above is easier
Remember that RMX has it's own EFX plug-in for each channel also - so you may not neccessarily have to use Logic's.

  • Stylus RMX and Logic Pro 9

Hi Everyone and forgive me for this ancient question but.. . .I have just spent an agonizing three days rebuilding my hard drive after the new Mac upgrade totally trahsed mine (and apparrently a lot of other people's as well). I'm not at home and therefore the restore disc is unavailable so I'm having to do it all by hand, so to speak.
Here's my question: Could someone walk me through setting up Stylus as a Multi-Timbral Instrument again? What's happening now is that, when I go to 'Create New Instrument/Multi-Timbral/8' I'm getting 8 tracks but they're all connected (i.e. you move one fader and they all move). Secondly, my old set up had MIDI tracks where (what seem to be) audio tracks are. I've tried to approach this from every possible angle, but still no luck. If I can't get MIDI tracks to appear on the Arrange Page, how can I insert the MIDI file from Stylus that I want to use?
OK, thanks for your help and please, do not, under any circumstances install the new upgrade!!! The forums are crammed with people who've had the same problem I had. Cheers, John

    John,
I'm just learning about RMX and Omnisphere and believe I ran across your answer while studying some tutorials.  The screen shot below is from a RMX/Logic tutorial on Spectrasonics website: http://spectrasonics.net/products/stylusrmx-videos.php?p=4&f=&q=&InstrumentID=3& VideoTypeID=3 (it's an imbedded video towards the bottom of the page titled; Stylus RMX Tutorial RMX and Logic)
The video is based on Logic 7 and RMX 1.5, but still provide the basics for you to reset RMX as a Multi-Timbre instrument.  Cheers!

  • Can't get automation data from RMX into Logic

I'm usinga tutorial that shows a simple way to use the RMX interfaceto write automation data to the master channel using RMX as a multitimbral instrument. It shows that you simply put the track in touch mode, engage play, and then move things on the RMX mixer. I can't get it to work this way. What am I forgetting?

Funny this is coming up, I'm doing this right now.
    Try this:
Instantiate a mulit RMX on instrument 1. Create a multi instrument object in the environment. Don't cable it to RMX yet.
Create a transformer object. Double click the transformer. Okay here we go, follow close:
    Under "Conditions" enter
    Status = Control
    Channel All
    -1- = 7
    -2- All
    Under "Operations" enter
    Fix Fader
    Fix 2
    Scale 1.0000 2
    Thru
Now you'll see three black vertical lines in the middle. Click the middle line twice. This will cause you to have:
    1st line: Vertical
2nd line: Starts at top of first line and goes diagnally down
    3rd line: Vertical
That's if you want the Logic volume sliders to control the RMX volume sliders in RMX's mixer page. You have to cable it with the multi instrument to make it work...that's down below. Don't check "Filter Duplicate Events".
Here's the way to change the pan:
    New transformer:
    Under "Conditions":
    Status = Control
    Channel All
    -1- = 10
    -2- = All
    Under "Operations":
    Fix Fader
    Fix 2
    Scale 1.0000 10
    Thru
Now Logics pan pot on the RMX multi controls the pan on the RMX Mixer page.
Now cable the multi-instrument object you created the first transformer, and then that transformer to the next, and then that transformer to instrument one. You're set!
Ok, now why does this work? I mostly understand it...
On Instrument 2, put a multi RMX plugin on. Now in the environment, create a monitor object. Cable Instrument 1 to the monitor object (don't cable the monitor object to Instrument 1, won't work).
Now with the environment page and monitor object still in view, open the plugin RMX on Instrument 2. Go to the mixer page. Move the volume slider for multi 1. You'll see some data show up in the monitor. Here's what it means (sort of):
    You'll see something like:
    2 2 92
    2 2 91
I'll start by saying that the last number is just the volume value. Move the fader and it changes accordingly. So this number isn't important for this example.
The first number, 2, is related to RMX as an instrument. That's the 2 in:
    "Operations"
    Fix Fader
    Fix 2 <---------
The next number is associated with multi one's volume slider in RMX. That's it's number. If you move multi 2's volume fader, you'll see:
    2 3 91
    2 3 95
And for multi 3's volume fader in RMX:
    2 4 91
    2 4 92
So that's why we get this:
    "Operations"
Scale 1.0000 <----- because we're moving in incriments of 1, RMX Multi 1 had 2 as a second number in the monitor, RMX Multi 2 had 3 as a second number in the monitor, RMX Multi 3 had 4 as it's second number in the monitor
    and then:
    "Operations"
    Scale 1.0000 2 <-------because the first fader, multi 1, STARTS on 2.
Okay, so that's what the monitor tells us. You can delete that monitor object now, or keep it there if you want to control other RMX values with Transformers.
So now the other parts....here's where I'm guessing, anyone can chime in here and correct me...
    Under "Conditions"
Status = Control <-----because you're going to control the desired RMX fader/pot with your input of a continuous controller #.
    Under "Conditions"
Channel All <---don't know why, but it is.
    Under "Conditions"
-1- = 7 <------- That "7" is the continuous controller number of the volume sliders on the multi instrument channels in Logic. Here are other useful ones I've found in creating the mega autoload:
10 = pan knob on Logic multi inst
91 = reverb knob on Logic multi inst (i use this to control the amount of Aux 1 FX on any given RMX mutli. As a side note, RMX Aux 1 is:
    "Operations"
    Scale 5.0000 35
And then the subsequent Aux 2 is 36, Aux 3 is 37, and so on)
93 = chorus knob on Logic multi inst (I use this for Aux 2 FX)
74 = Frequency knob on Logic multi inst (i use this for Aux 3 FX, although you have to slam it to the left for 0, because it defaults in the center like a pan pot).
    As for this:
    "Conditions"
    -2- All <------
    And this:
    "Operations
Thru <--------which is right below the -2- All
I think because we're not using those to change and "Transform" values, you just leave them the way they are.
Hope this helps! I'm sure more can be added by the genius dudes who roam these parts...

  • Stylus rmx and logic

just got stylus rmx. I want to use rmx like I do BFD as a multi with auxes. does anyone know if it works the same way as BFD as far as configuration to seperate the sounds (kick, snare etc.) i watched the video but it seemed to focus more on rmx as a stereo plug.

    In exactly the same way.
The Logic setup tutorial videos on your Stylus RMX disks describe and show you the process in full.
Insert RMX as a multi channel instrument, set up your auxes to take the extra RMX outputs, then route whatever parts, sounds, edit groups etc to whichever RMX outputs you wish.
