RnR Recovery - M57 Vista to 500Gb SATA

Hi everyone,
I came across "funny" issue...
My M57 (6069-CTO) was running well WinXP. Recently I replaced original 250Gb disk with 500Gb (WD5003AZEX) disk.
I tried to recover my Vista Business SP1 32bit, using original DVD Recovery set. It recovers "service partition" well, then boots up, reaches green/blue background on desktop saying "Please wait while Windows continues setting up your computer". This runs for several minutes and fails with:
"Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware" After reboot, the following message pops up:
Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation".
So far I have tried to set BIOS to default settings (BIOS latest from Lenovo web site), changed SATA/AHCI to IDE (Compatibility), same problems all the time...Tried even to jumper 500Gb disk to run with 3.0Gbps...no luck
At the same time, I manage to install same set to 160Gb 2.5" drive I have spare without any problems, with SATA/AHCI enabled in the BIOS...
When doing Image of 160Gb disk and restoring it to 500Gb, Vista boots up OK and works fine (apart from several cosmetic issues which are minor).
Any idea how to make installation working ?
Thanks in advance

You have found a workaround by cloning  250GB to the 500GB..
Per the following link, your WDC is advanced format:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf
This "IA" is a typo from the microsoft link.. it should have said advanced format.  The microsoft link is:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466753
AF would require intel chipset  driver 9.6 or higher.  You have found what does work during install on the 500 GB, ie a win 7 lenovo install ( newer, might have the correct intel driver). What does not work is the Vista Lenovo install (older, might not have the driver).  The driver might not even be the problem.
Typical workaround:
(1) Bios, Change Raid to AHCI or IDE
(2) During install, click the load driver button (with the intel driver you copied to a CD). (DID YOU DO THIS?)
This 2 items seem to not  have helped.
===
If you really want to spend the time, read the above microsoft article and run this test:
(1) create a win 7 repair CD
(2) Start the Lenovo vista standalone install until it fails
(3) Boot to the repair CD and get a command prompt
(4)Locate the C:\Panther folder and check the error logs with notepad. Is \Panther used in vista install?
(-or- take the 500GB drive and install as a secondary HDD on another machine and browse the C drive).
===
I would:
(1) Burn the intel driver to a CD
(2) Run Lenovo vista install
(3) Click load driver button, with intel driver in the CD drive.
(4) Take your choice of BIOS settings.  I would start with Raid, then AHCI, then IDE.  I really believe this should fix your problem, but I might be wrong.
(5)Keep the win7 repair CD available if you want to go xxx.log hunting on the C drive.

  • Unable to create RnR recovery media on Z60m

I have a Z60m (2529-FKG) with XP Pro. I intend to replace the HD (100GB -> 300GB) and at the same time reinstall XP.
Q1) I have an XP Pro OEM CD. Can I just use that to install, using the XP Pro key from my Z60m? Which XP Pro key should I use -- the one from the bottom of the machine, or the "-OEM-" one that System Properties shows, or the one shown by the "secret keyfinder" utilities?
Q2) Once I have a clean XP Pro install, I'll need to install a limited set of drivers (and possibly selected tools e.g. power manager) from the ThinkVantage set. Will I still be able to install these on a "non-factory" XP Pro install? Does the "check its a Lenovo/IBM" check the BIOS string or the OS or check for existence of the recovery partition or what?
I want to retain the option of the RnR recovery partition functionality (in case I ever decide I really really wanted the bloatware-version of XP Pro that it gives me...).
I hadn't previously created RnR recovery media so I tried to create the media using Start->ThinkVantage->Create Recovery Media. It fails with an "encountered a problem; send error report" dialog.
I am currently on RnR 3.0.027. Lenovo support wouldn't send me the media without charge and suggested I upgrade to a later version of RnR instead. I downloaded the 3.0.{025,027} -> 3.1.042 upgrade, but it fails to install claiming that the installed copy of Rescue and Recovery - Client Security Solution.msi "does not match the installed source". The notes for RnR 4.2 state that it can't be used to upgrade RnR 3.0.x, and that it requires CSS 8.2 (I currently have CSS 6.0 installed).
Q3) Should I uninstall RnR 3.0 & CSS 6.0 then install RnR 4.2 and CSS8.2? Will that cause any problems? I don't have any "secure drive" files, or any backups I need to keep (I'll be making a new set using standard tools). But I do have fingerprint security configured for power/disk passwords...
Q4) Or can I copy the recovery partition and keep the "press blue" functionality some other way e.g. by using a partition copying tool (or Linux dd /dev/sdaX ...) to copy the MBR and the recovery partition onto the new drive? Does it matter which primary partition the recovery partition goes onto?
    Thanks in advance

hello mishad welcome to the forums
A1)you say that you have an OEM version of xp?does it belong to lenovo?did it come with your system??you can usually use such kind of cd's with recovery cd set you obtain with your computer.
regarding your other query no you cannot use the key from the COA sticker on your system  to install the OEM version of xp you have
A2)if you want to create recovery media in the future and ensure that the hidden partition is created then you have to make the recovery media from the hidden partition of your system only
A3)if you install the OEM verison of xp(which  OEM does it belong to?)you have to activate your system manually that would mean you are not using a licensed copy of windows coz that OEM cd was not intented to be installed on your system
if you clearly read the  EULA of microsoft you can notice that xp can be installed only on one pc at a time..so i think you got my point
A4)regarding the thinkwantage technologies issue yeah you may be able to install the power option and all no doubt...the bios does not check whether its your xp or not for that purpose
A5)but if you do use the xp(OEM) one which you intend to install the BIOS will check for it.......rememebr your copy of windows you obtained from lenovo is PRE-ACTIVATED at the factory itself.......
A6)in any case use the recovery cds from the xp you have from lenovo aka the hidden partition in the future if you want to reformat every thing the hidden partition will be created by the lenovo recovery discs once again.IF YOU USE OTHER XP CD YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CREATE A RECOVERY PARITION ON THE NEW HDD
    hope this info helps
    Cheers and regards,

  • Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 HDD

Can i install a Western Digital 500GB SATA-300 Hard Drive in my imac?
    Please help!
My imac is a Intel Based 17¨ 1.83 MHZ.

You can't install anything (including a new drive) inside an Intel iMac with the exception of ram, if you want to preserve the warranty. This is not to say internal drive couldn't be replaced if you are willing to open the case, or get someone to do it for you. Not clear which Intel iMac you have, your descriptive line at the bottom of your post said it was a "g5" and none of the intel iMac's are g5 based. If yours is a core 2 duo it is quite possibly under the original warranty still, but even if it is a core duo machine and you purchased Applecare you would be advised not to pry open the case.
A better approach would be to buy an external drive in an enclosure with a USB or firewire interface and use that for your drive expansion.

  • 500GB SATA HD cannot be recognised on MSI 865GM2-LS

I have just purchased a Seagate Barracuda 500GB Sata II HD. I leave the default jumper setting set to SATA 1 which is limited to 1.5GB/s operation.
I have a MSI 865GM2-LS Mainboard which was purchased in March 2004. I connected the HD to one of the two Mainboard SATA connectors.
My Phoenix Award BIOS on the Mainboard is V5.4. In the BIOS setup in the Integrated Peripherals -> On-Chip Serial ATA Setting, I have configured to either of the following settings for the SATA controller:
    1) Auto
    2) Native Mode
In either of the 2 above settings, the BIOS setup is not able to recognise the HD.
When I boot up to XP Pro, the HD is also not able to be detected in Computer Management.
The local MSI distributor Corbell in Singapore tested with a similar MSI 865GM2-LS Mainboard with a Seagate 80GB SATA II HD. The jumper was also set to SATA 1. The Mainboard BIOS setting was able to detect the 80GB HD.
Does MSI 865GM2-LS Mainboard BIOS able to detect a big capacity 500GB SATA HD? If not, kindly advise on a solution.
TIA for answering to my enquiries.

I used another SATA cable and connected it to the 2nd SATA Connector on the Mainboard. Now the 500GB HD can be recognised!
Not sure whether the 1st SATA Connector or the 1st SATA Cable is faulty.
On the BIOS setup. I see that there is a X cross on the SATA 0, not sure if  the SATA 0 has already been disabled by MSI at manufactured of the Mainboard. No cross X is shown on SATA 1 which I am currently using now.

  • (P965 Neo) Problem booting WM 500GB SATA drive

    Hi guys,
I've just finished putting together my first custom built system.
    Pentium D 3.4ghz, in a P965 Neo board.
I've connected a WD 500GB SATA drive to SATA1 port on the board.
I used the IDE cable to connect 2 CD/DVD Drives.
I have installed all the drivers on the cd aswell as the online update software.
The problem I am having is that as soon as the system starts to load, the initial page (after calculating the memory) says that it is unable to find any IDE drives.
It then askes me to press F1 if i want to continue or DEL for setup.
HOWEVER if I press F1 and do continue the bootup, it first loads a jmicron technology boot screen, which does show both the sata harddrive + both the CD/DVD drives.
    Then loads up windows normally??
This is my first experience with SATA drive, so I tried to look at the bio to see if there was maybe a special setting I'm meant to set if I am only using a single sata drive as my primary drive??
Its rather annoying to say the least having to basically (with every boot) press F1 first, then Enter to skip the JTechnology bit to load windows. For the time being I have disabled the halt on error bit (found in bios) and lowered the Jtechnolgy bit to 1second showing. But I feel this problem may lead to others.
Any help would really be appreciated.

BIOS will be able to detect IDE device only if you connect your hard drive to one of the Intel's SATA ports(2-5).As you were told, the first SATA port is controlled by Jmicron. That's why if you connect the hard drive to this port, it will be shown in the Jmicron BIOS, and not in the main BIOS that contains  only devices that are controlled by Intel southbridge. But,nothing to worry about. I'm using the Jmicron port for my Hard drive too, and lot of the people will be surprised if they know that when using this controller(not Intel's), you are getting a better burst rate for your Hard drive(250 MB/s when connected on Jmicron, 197MB/s when connected on Intel).
So,just install a proper driver for Jmicron, and nothing to worry about.

  • RNR and Windows Vista Restore Points

    Hello,
Is the Rescue and Recovery program able to use restore points created in Vista? I recently had registry corruption and my X61s would not boot into Windows. The Lenovo tech blithely parroted: "reimage the machine". Mercifully I had a 2 week old back-up under RNR. A related question would be whether RNR can use full backups created under Vista since RNR backups are excruciatingly slow.
    Thanks,
    Manish

as fas as i know RnR is diffrerent from Windows Restore, so if you use both you get double backups and therefore doble chances to restore your info in this case, i prefer RnR backups rather than vista because you can get into the menu even if windows cant boot, you might want disabel windows restore and recover that disk space used

  • Rescue & Recovery and Vista Restore Points

    Hello,
If I create a restore point using Vista, how do I access that using IBM Rescue and Recovery (R&R)? I recently had a situation where Vista would not boot-up and the only thing I could do is to use an old backup. Are Windows Vista backups available in R&R if Windows itself does not boot. It appears that a shelf version of Vista comes with Windows Recovery Environment that gives you access to the command prompt so you could edit the registry to delete any offending entries but I do not know how to get to the Windows Recovery Environment  within R&R and not having the Vista DVD.
    Thanks,
    Manish

  • SSD Drive on HP G60... won't install from recovery media (Vista)

I bought a new SSD .. Intel 501 series. When I try to install OS via the recovery media, it errors with "Recovery data is missing. Please use recovery media to restore your system." Why?
I have tried installing Win 7 on the same machine and it works fine. I just don't have another valid key for 7, so I want to use the OS that came with the machine (Vista)... Anybody solve this problem? Help is greatly appriciated.

I should add that the recovery media worked fine when I ugraded the HDD to another HDD.... but it's just not working when upgrading to a SSD

  • Seagate 500GB SATA

I purchased a new Seagate internal drive for my T60p to be used either as the boot drive or as the bay drive for data.  However, I can not get the machine to fully acknowledge it.  It will show in the boot list, but it will not boot or appear as an available drive.
I have updated the SATA AHCI Controller driver, but haven't been able to find an update to the UltraBay ATA Storage Controller.
If I boot my XP Prof OS from the Bay Drive using the original 100GB drive, and have the new drive in the Drive 0 location, I can at least see it via the Computer Manager.  I was even able to format it, but it not accessible.
This new drive has a 3GB transfer rate, and I have tried the jumper setting to reduce it back to a 1.5 GB rate.  No luck.
Is this related to a 137GB limitation on the drive size?  If so, my Seagate 500GB USB drive works fine, but that may be the difference between USB and an internal drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

After lots of trial and error getting my ThinkPad hard drive upgraded, I was able to clone it without reloading Windows. The solution for cloning to this drive from the original is as follows:
Update the bios to the latest version.
Apply the firmware upgrade to the hard drive as needed. The firmware upgrade is in the downloads section of Lenovo's site.
If running XP, make sure it's SP3.
Unplug the power, remove the battery, then remove the old drive.
Install the new, empty drive, put the battery back in, and plug in the power.
Connect the old drive to the USB port.
Boot the computer using a bootable cloning software disk. I used the bootable version of Seagate Tools since I had a Seagate drive. Easeus Partition Master should work fine as well.
Proceed with cloning from the USB attached drive to the new drive, keeping the original partition sizes the same.
After the process completes, the machine will boot from the new drive. Use Easeus Partition Master to move the sevice partition to the end of the drive, and give the unallocated free space to the C: drive. Once that is done, you have your new drive with lots of free space.
I hope this post helps someone get spared from a lot of grief in trying to upgrade their drive...this procedure is far from what it takes on just about any computer, but it's the only successful way to clone the drive into something that's bootable on the ThinkPad. The only other option is a new install of Windows, then transfer in your data.

  • Recovery/Windows vistas

    Hi everyone,
I have a Satellite S305-S7467, after several reboots, needed a Recovery. After inserted both disc, it went to a windows Boot Manager page and is asking me to install the windows installation disc.
Because it have a pre-install windows vistas(32), I don't have the disc. I'm still able to see the activation for the windows vistas underneath the laptop.
How can I get a disc or download the software. I couldn't find anything under the download tab on Toshiba web?
    Thank you,
    Gus

Your model came with recovery discs, Gus. They enable you to restore the hard drive to its original out-of-the-box contents.
If you've lost the discs, obtain them from Toshiba.

  • Patient Survived Surgery! P505D-S8930 Recovery Disk (Vista 64) Needed for Rehab!

After 9 months of dedicated service, my Toshiba laptop suffered a "hard drive attack" last week.  Fortunately, the hard drive transplant surgery was a complete success.
The patient now has a new hard drive installed, and I have ordered a recovery disk from Toshiba, but the ETA is next week.
Toshiba chose not to honor my request for an expedited mode of delivery (overnight shipping, file download, etc.) to enable the laptop's "rehab" to begin this week.
My laptop is really anxious to "get back to business".  An extended vacation on a repair shop shelf is not really the rehab the technician recommended.
Can anyone offer assistance in helping me to get my laptop "back on its feet" sooner?
    Thank you.

If you know someone who lives near you with a P505D from the same model family with Vista 64 you could more than likely use their Recovery Disks to restore your system.  The other options would be to:
Install Linux and be up and running in the time it takes to download the ISO and about an hour to burn the disk and install it.
Take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 7 and do a clean install of it.
Acquire a Vista Install DIsk, install Vista, then use the Product Key on the bottom of the laptop to validate the install.
Create a set of Recovery Disks as outlined in your Users Guide from the original hard drive.   This only works if you do it when you first purchase the laptop and is designed specifically for this situation of a hard drive crash.  Once the hard drive crashes this option is no longer available to you.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Purchased recovery disk Vista for Satellite A205S4607 install freezes after files are copied

I purchased the recovery disks for Vista for Satellite A205S4607.  I had XP professional installed, but I could not find the drivers needed so I decided just to buy the disks.
I insert the disk, hold down C as it is booting.  The cd runs, and copies over the files, but once it gets to the status bar, the install freezes.  I let it "run" all night and it never came to an install screen.
    Any suggestions?

It sounds like it's likely a hardware failure in the laptop itself. Were you having problems previously?
