Roaming guest network

Since the airport utility and base stations have been updated to allow airports in bridge mode to do guest networking, I have set up a guest network on my base stations that are extending my main base station via ethernet that is doing the routing connected to my modem. However, the guest network is not a roaming network. I see multiple guest network SSID's, instead of one roaming SSID like my main network. Guest networks are all the same, so instead of seeing "Network" & "Network_Guest" only, I see multiple "Network_Guest" SSIDs. Is this normal or and I doing something wrong?

If you are using a common utility like iStumber, Air Radar, WiFi Explorer, etc. you will see mulitple SSIDs.
For example, if you have assigned a single network name for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands on your "main" router, you will see both of these SSIDs. Look a bit more carefully and you will see that one is 2.4 GHz and other 5 GHz.
In addition, the Guest Network will display 2 SSIDs with the same name, one for 2.4 GHz and another for 5 GHz.
So, you will see a total of 4 SSIDs for the "main" AirPort.
Any other AirPorts that you have set up will display a total of 4 SSIDs as well.
So, if you have a "main" AirPort and "remote" AirPort setup in a roaming network to extend both the main and guest networks, you will see 8 SSIDs on a wireless utility.  This is normal.
Things get a bit more complicated if you have enabled the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network....because you will see different SSIDs for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.  The Guest network does not have an option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band.

  • Create a roaming Guest Network

I'm planning to expand my network with a second Time Capsule to increase network coverage. The TCs would both be of a version with simultaneous dual band and guest network. The TCs would be connected with wired ethernet and one of the TCs would serve as DHCP server.
My plan is to create a roaming network, but according to the manual the second TC would be configured as a bridge. Doesn't that disable the Guest Network feature? Is there any way to have both a main roaming network and a guest roaming network?

+Is there any way to have both a main roaming network and a guest roaming network?+
Unfortunately, no. As you point out, when the second Time Capsule is in bridge mode, the availability of a Guest option is not present.

  • Is it possible to extend AP Extreme's both main and guest networks by connecting one or two new dual band AP express in roaming mode (connecting with ethernet)?

I have an Airport extreme base station which creates a wireless network and a guest network at my home. Neither of them reach every room so I have set up one Airport express (1st generation A1264) in roaming mode to extend the main wireless network by connecting the base stations with ethernet (with powerline adapters actually). Works fine with the main network. However, I would like to extend also the guest network. Is this possible with a 2nd generation dual band AP express?

I would like to extend also the guest network. Is this possible with a 2nd generation dual band AP express?
Yes it is, if you have updated your Mac to use AirPort Utility 6.2 and both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express have been updated to use version 7.6.3 firmware.

  • I enabled the guest network feature on my time capsule.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use this as a network extender using a "roaming" network?

I enabled the guest network feature on my TC.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use the extreme as a network extender connecting my Airport Extreme to my TC via ethernet cable?

Unfortunately no, since the AirPort Extreme should be configured in Bridge Mode if it is connecting to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
The Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the AirPort is configured in Bridge Mode.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network cannot be "extended" either by using an Ethernet connection or wireless. It is only available from the Time Capsule "main" wireless router on your network, not any extending devices.

  • Wired + Private Wireless + Guest Networks

I'm attempting to setup a configuration that I don't seem able to get correct. I have a small wired network at my church with a file server and a couple of dozen users, some of which have laptops and would like to be able to roam wirelessly through the building. In addition, I would like to have an unsecured wireless guest network for visitors which provides access to the internet and does not have access to the file server.
The specifics are a wired 192.168.1.xxx network with a NAT'd DSL modem/router. I have 4 Airport Extreme dual radio N devices. I've tried setting the first Airport Extreme unit to shared IP, the only setting that allows me to also use a guest network, with a private SSID handing out 172.0.xxx.xxx addresses and a guest network handing out 10.0.xxx.xxx addresses. It seems logical to me that I would want to used bridged mode to allow my private wireless uses to see the server, but the Airport Extreme tells me I can not use a guest network with that setting.
With this setup, I can not get to my server by name, but I can get to by IP address. I guess that's not a huge problem since I have such a small number of users, I can add the server IP address to a hosts file on each client. What bothers me most is that I can get to the server IP from the guest network as well as the private network. Am I missing something?
My second point of confusion is when I try to configure the other 3 Airport Extremes to extend the network. The configuration tools asks me which wireless network I want to extend, and allows me to choose only the private network OR the guest network. I thought it should be able to extend both networks simultaneously. Am I mistaken on this as well?
I'm certain I've left out plenty of information you may need to assist so please ask, I will gather what ever I can. Thanks in advance.

Hello muellgre. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, Apple does not provide you with very many options when it comes to their Guest network feature. It is basically designed to work with a single AirPort/Time Capsule router in your network configuration.
As you have found out, it will only be available if you have the AirPort configured as a NAT router and not as a bridge. Also you cannot extend a Guest network. I'm actually surprised that you were given this option.
Since you have a DSL gateway upstream of your AirPorts that is performing as your primary Internet router, you would want all of your AirPorts to be configured as bridges. Regardless if you were connecting them all back to the DSL gateway by Ethernet or creating a WDS extended network.
If you go the route of configuring a single Extreme as a router, you will have a Double NAT configuration, which is not bad in itself, but does add some complexity when attempting to share between network segments.
One option would be to reconfigure the DSL gateway as a bridge, and then, configure one of the Extremes as a router to allow it to handle NAT & DHCP services for the network. This will also give you your guest network. You can also extend this Extreme with the others, but not its guest network ... so, overall, this might not satisfy all of your networking requirements.

  • Guest network does not work when bridging airport express to extreme

    Hello everyone,
i just upgraded my airport extreme 5th gen and airport express (dual band) to 7.6.3 which is supposed to enable guest network extenstion..
my airport extreme is hardwired to airport express (set as bridged mode), eveything works fine with internet connectivity and roaming between the two since both are set with the same ssd name and wpa pass, i have enabled guest network on both to test the new update, which worked fine with airport extreme, then i went downstairs to test airport express guest network which didnt work.. i can see and join the network, IPs are set correctly exactly like airport extreme.
while testing airport express guest network i noticed that i can only browse google website or google search results, youtube website can be accessed too but it will not broadcast youtube videos.. any other website cannot be accessed thru airport express guest network..
since airport express guest network is providing a very limited access i tried enabling vpn on my iphone and managed to get full access with extremely slow speed.. can this be a bug on the firmware, did anyone find a solution???
    Thanks

AirPort Extreme is the main base station handlng DHCP and NAT for the network. Normally, I do not use the Guest Network feature of this dual band router, but decided to check out the new firmware.
The AirPort Express is normally connected back to the AirPort Extreme via a wired Ethernet connection so it functions as a separate access point in a roaming network configuration.
I tried out the Guest Network option in the new firmware on the AirPort Express and had no issues. Then, decided to try the Express out as a test connecting using wireless only. I moved it to a location that was about 30 feet and a few rooms away from the AirPort Extreme and enabled the Guest Function with no problems.
I would not expect your setup to work with the Guest Network features, since you do not have an Apple router installed and functioning as the main router for the network. That would be the device that "creates" the Guest Network and other AirPorts "extend" it using either an Ethernet or wireless connection.
Apple used VLAN for the Guest Network feature before and I assume that has been expanded somewhat with the new feature to extend the Guest Network option to other Apple routers on a network.

  • 3 Airport Extremes, 1 as router 2 as APs, Guest Network

I have 3 Airport Extremes, all 5th Gen, all Wired with CAT6. I have the first one setup as DHCP and NAT, with wireless off(basically acting as just a router)...Then its connected to a gigabit switch whitch then the 2 other Airport Extremes are set in bridge mode to create the same network name and pass.  What i am wondering is can i still create a guest network? the option shows up in wireless in AU 6, but i noticed there is no way to set the IP range as for obvious reasons (they arent in dhcp mode)...has anyone tried this or have any advice?

so the first AEBS has to have wifi enabled? in order for the other 2 AEBS to create the guest network?
Yes. If the Guest Network is not enabled on the first AirPort, then other AirPorts will not be able to extend a network that is not there in the first place.
what if i the 2 AEBS wifi stations are in dhcp only and guest network enabled
    This will not work.
is the a way to have all 3 AEBS on the same wireless channel to create this?
The correct setup in a roaming network is for each AirPort to be separated by 4-5 channels from others. This will usually happen automatically if you use the default "Automatic" Radio Mode setting, or you can set channels manually.  You would not want each AirPort to use the same channel.

  • Apple Airport Express guest network not really secure?

I've setup several of these devices and they work quite well but I setup the guest network on one and it's in the 172.X.X.X range and the local network is actually on the 192.X.X.X network. If I go to Start and Run and type in \\server it doesn't work but if I do \\192.168.1.2 it asks for the server credentials and allows someone to pull data! That's not a true "guest" network! Is this expected and normal? Do I need to return this device to the store and use something that actually protects the internal network?

It is not actually expected and normal. The guest network should be on a separate vlan to the main network. So even if you can get connection without wireless credentials the only access should be to the internet.
Tell us a bit more of the setup.
What is the main router? Is it setup to isolate vlans?
What about the switch.. again if it is managed or not and how are vlan setup?
What you might find is the Express is designed to work with the Extreme and in extend wireless mode where the network is correctly vlan isolated.
Have you tried another brand of wireless AP, with a guest mode.. because this might actually be a problem of the main router.. as it should not allow access.
I am not saying the Express are perfect by any means.. and people do occasionally report guest network functioning when it should not be.
What is model and firmware they are running.. ?
Are they plugged into the network by ethernet and setup in bridge.. then create a wireless network? Is it setup for roaming rather than extend or have you mixed them??
In the case where you use them in roaming.. the guest network should not work unless there is an airport extreme running as main router to provide vlan support.. or you have a managed switch.

  • Guest Network Won't Serve IP Addresses

I have enabled the guest network feature on an AirPort Express. I have the AE in bridge mode so that any connecting devices receive their IP addresses from our Windows Server (functioning as a DHCP server). Devices have no trouble connecting and receiving IPs when they connect to the main (password-protected) network, but when a device connects to the Guest network (no password) they do not receive an IP address and generally end up "self-assigning" themselves an IP.
I am creating a roaming network of Apple AirPort Extremes and Expresses at our K-8 school. I can't find any similar situations mentioned online. Any ideas? Is there perhaps an issue between the Windows Server 2003 and the Airport?

    Hi!
    thanks everyone for the brainstorm.
I managed to get it working.
Airport Extreeme base station with 2,4 and 5ghz modes working,
Guest network too, and the AE is set into bridge mode!
I have another router, that does the routing and dhcp. That is a mikrotik RB450 router with 5ports.
The trick is to have AE connected with 2 wires to the main router!
The main wire goes from AE Wan port to the main router lan port, and the second wire goes from AE lan port to the routers other internal lan port. The AE is set to get external ip from my router and that chain works alright.
Now the second wire is connected to an isolated port on the router. That way we make sure we serve the whole purpose of GuestNetwork. That isolated port is also set as a master port to host VLAN port with ID=1003.
The last thing to do is to make a separate dhcp service running on the VLAN port alone. (not the phisical port).
It doesn't matter what ip range you give out by your second dhcp service, as long as it plays well in your subnet scheme. You can simply put both your main and the guest networks close like 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24. The dns enries stay the same for both networks.
It should work with any router capable of VLAN and with at lease two lan ports avail.
Forget about sniffing ip ranges out of your AE device. It's useless! Along with the vlan tag 1003 any dhcp service met on the vlan path will respong to your guest request.
    Good luck!

  • I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities Airport Utilities and all get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. I need help?

I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities>Airport Utilities and all I get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser window which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

Open AirPort Utility. The first screen looks something like this:
Click on the AirPort Extreme and another screen will appear. Click Edit, then the window with the Wireless tab will appear.
If you do not see these screens, you will need to start over and configure your AirPort again.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11AC + 5th Gen and guest network access

I have the current gen Airport Extreme 802.11AC with a 5th Gen extending the network. With this setup, I am unable to login using our guest network setup. I have tried using guest network with a password and one without but its the same results. When a guest logins, it stuck attempting to login with no error messages.
So is it possible to have this configuration and still have guest network access?

Please review what I said originally.......that the guest network function on the AirPort Extreme is designed to work with a simple modem......so the AirPort acts as the main router for the network..
Another way of saying the same thing is that the AirPort needs to be "in charge" of your network for the guest feature to work correctly. The AirPort cannot be in charge if it is connected to another device that is already configured to be the main router on your network.....your Actiontec modem/router.
The Actiontec device combines the functions of a separate modem and a separate router in one package. This type of device is known as a modem/router, or also known as a gateway.
Some folks call a modem/router or a gateway......a modem. So, things can get confusing.
I do not know if it is possible for the Actiontec device that you have to be configured to act as a simple modem.....so the routing functions of the device are completely turned off. (Turning off the wireless on the Actiotec does not turn off the routing function).
If you turn off the wireless on the Actionec, it becomes a modem and a wired router. And that wired router is still in charge of your network.
The guest network feature will not work correctly unless the AirPort is in charge of your network.
My suggestion was for you to ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP), if they could supply you with a simple modem.  That is all that you need. You don't need two routers....and the Actiontec that you have now is not allowing the guest feature to work correctly.

  • Cascading EA4500s and Guest Network access

Hi, I hope esomone can help me here. I've got two EA4500 routers connected via ethernet. The primary router has DHCP enabled and the secondary has it disabled. IP address of primary is 192.168.1.1 and the secondary is 192.168.1.2.
I have set up guest access on both routers however only the primary router allows users to connect. When out of range of the primary router but in range of the secondary router the network is visible but when you try to connect to it, it only gives limited or no connectivity message and can't connect to the internet.
Is it possible for the guest network access to follow the same pattern as the secure network, i.e. the same network throughout the house?
    Regards
    Jon

Cascading two routers should have correct parameters set. For instance, the Ethernet port of the secondary router should be connected to the ethernet port of the primary one, and the DHCP should be disabled on the second router. The ip address you've set are correct for the both routers. This thing shoud be done if the connection is LAN to LAN.
By the way there are two types of cascading: Click here for info!
    For the Guest Network:
Guest Network would only work if the the DHCP is enabled on your router. It means to say that on the type of setup you're doing which is LAN to LAN (DHCP disabled on the second router), Guest network would not work on the secondary router. If the connection is LAN to WAN, then both of the router should have Guest Network working.

  • How do I configure Guest network to access ethernet wired printer?

I have a wired/wireless network with a new dual band AEBS. The AEBS is connected to a Cisco router, which in turn sends it's connections to various wall-plates in our home. One HP 4110 printer is wired via it's ethernet port, one Mac Mini (OS 10.6.2) is hard wired also. The dual band AEBS 5 GHz network is used for our newer laptops, and the 2.4 GHz network is used for a G3 Firewire PowerBook (now don't make fun... it was the best there was at one time) running OS 10.4.11.
The PowerBook cannot access the printer that is hard wired via ethernet cable to the network. How do I get the PowerBook on the "Guest" network to access the printer?
I tried searching these discussions, but can't find an answer to my specific issue. Any help is appreciated.

Since you have a simultaneous dual-band AEBS, why not connect your PowerBook G3 to the non-Guest 2.4 GHz network created?
Can I take an AEBS that is a couple of years older (I have a couple of the flying saucers around here somewhere), wire that to an available ethernet port on the LAN, and then connect the older PowerBook G3 to that older AEBS wirelessly?
    Sure
If so, will that arrangement slow down the entire system?
    No
If that won't work, and I connect the PowerBook G3 directly to an ethernet port, will that slow down the other wireless computers?
Yes you can connect your PowerBook G3 via Ethernet. That would have no effect on the wireless computers.

  • How do I add a guest network to existing airport extreme configuration?

I have an existing Airport Extreme configuation in my home Wifi network and I want to add a guest access point.  When I open the recently updated airport utilities, the screen no longer looks the way it used to, with the side bar on the left and my devices listed there for me to select (I also have an Airport Express).  I used to be able to select the Airport Extreme from the left side bar, then hit continue to change any settings.  Well now, since it updated, the screen looks different, with internet at the top, pointing to the Airport Extreme, then the Airport Express.  When I select the Airport Extreme, it no longer gives me the option to change the settings for it, which is where my problem lies!  Any help?  I know it's probably something very simple that I am missing, but I'm at a loss.

Why would I download a lower version of AirPort Utility?
To gain more functionality.....since AirPort Utility 6.0 is otherwise known as "AirPort Utility Lite" on the forums. It's a "first try" for Apple with a new look. While it does look nice, it has been downgraded as far as the features are concerned.
For example, if you open AirPort Utility 5.6 and click on the AirPort Extreme on the left, your Generation version will be displayed on the right side of the page.  There are many more advanced settings available in AirPort Utility 5.6 as well...that are not available on 6.0.
But, you don't have to install AirPort Utility 5.6 if you don't want to. I suggested it because it offers more features and will also look exactly the same as the AirPort Utility that you have used previously.
If your AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode, this indicates that you have another device...probably a modem/router....which is acting as the main router on your network. Bridge Mode is the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme in this case.
If you can post back with the make and model number of your "modem", we can check to confirm.
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be enabled unless you configure the AirPort Extreme to be the "main" router on your network, which is likely not possible. If you try to configure the AirPort Exteme otherwise, you will receive error messages and the network will not function correctly.

  • How do to set up time limits on a guest network

I have a new generation Airport Time Capsule and I have set up a Guest Network for my kids but I would like to set up time limits on the Guest Network also, is there a way to do it?

It is not possible to set up specific time limits for the Guest Network as a whole, but it is possible to set up individual time limits for each device that will be connecting to the Guest Network.....and, also the main network for that matter.
If you can provide us with some more specifics on what you are trying to accomplish, how many devices will be involved, etc.......that will help us craft our answer to provide accurate information.
Meanwhile, if you want to take a look at the general settings in Timed Access....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Network tab at the top of the screen
Enter a check mark in the box next to Enable Timed Access
Click on the Timed Access button
Click Cancel to avoid making any changes to your current setup
