Robohelp 10

Can we use Robohelp 10 for multiple users who want to work in a single file without installing a server?

With 'single file', do you mean a single project?
If you mean a single project, the short answer is no: You need to use source control if you want to be able to work in the same project with multiple people simultaneously.
Of course, you can also both get a local copy and copy paste any changed files to a central location, such as a network drive. This process is however very error prone (forgetting to put files files, forgetting to get files, overwriting each other's work, etc.)
You can share a single project via a network drive and work with multiple authors. You just won't be able to work in the same project simultaneously without some form of source control.
If by single file you mean a single HTML file, then the answer is a definite no. And even when you use source control, doing something like that would mean merging on HTML code level. Not something I would recommend to anyone.
Kind regards,
Willam

• Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable to load database

I have Robohelp 2002r2 and am creating Robohelp HTML help.
The project was ok yesterday but today when I try to open it I get
the error message "Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable
to load database". I tried the solutions in the knowledgebase
(rb_3245) but still no luck. I can't even create a new project
either or I get the same message. Anybody know what to
do????

Welcome to the forum.
The message is usually easily dealt with. I haven't checked
the article as you didn't include a link but I'm guessing it
involved deleting a couple of files and then using the HHP file to
open the project.
What is more worrying is that you cannot create a new
project.
Have you tried opening one of the supplied sample files?
Are your projects stored locally and not on a network?
Have IT given you a new profile to log on with?
Has anything else changed in your environment?

• RoboHelp Setup Problem

Okay, i just dished out $1000 for this thing and can't even
create an HTML project. The sample projects won't even open and
i've confirmed they exist.
Details:
installed RoboHelp 6. When i run RoboHelp HTML, and try to
open one of the sample projects, i get the following dialog:
Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to
load database for :
"C:\program files\adobe\robohelp
6.0\RoboHTML\Samples\ApplicationHelp\applicationhelp.cpd"
I navigate to the path above and confirm the path is correct
and the applicationhelp.cpd exists. So i press OK at the dialog,
and just try to create my own project. It only gets worse.
I perform the following steps:
1-In RoboHelp HTML, go to File/New/Project.
2- the "New Project" dialog opens
3-select WebHelp and click OK.
4-the "New Project Wizard" dialog opens
5-I enter a title and select a path "C"\RoboHelp6\Project1"
6-I click "Finish". The New Project Wizard closes and returns
me back to the "New Project" dialog.
7-(hmmm...must have done something wrong i think)
8-In the New Project dialog, i click OK.
9-I'm now taken back to the "New Project Wizard" dialog.
10-i repeat the same steps - entering Project1 as and
C:\RoboHelp6\Project1 as the path
11-i click Finish and get error:
Unable to creat enw project. Specified folder is not empty.
12-My only option to leave the "New Project" dialog box is to
click Cancel
13-i click cancel
14-i look in the folder and have the following files:
!SkinSubFolder!
HtmlHelp.css
project1.cpd
project1.hpr
project1.syn
default.css
MS_Help.css
project1.glo
project1.ppf
w95help.css
Where's the project file? When i go to open a new project and
select the directory no .xpj or mgj files are listed!!! Anybody
know what i'm doing wrong?
BTW: i uninstalled and re-installed the product 4 times now.
Still can create an HTML project.
PLEASE HELP!!!!

Just to clarify, these forums are mostly supported by other
RoboHelp users rather than Adobe employees. The Community Expert is
simply a recognition by Adobe of the work I do in these forums, I
am not employed by them. I mention this as you ask Adobe not to
require you to wipe your hard disk. Actually you will need to wipe
the entire network to fix this one. OK, I'm lying.
It does sound like X5 has left something behind and that does
sometimes happen. First uninstall RH6. I am not sure what effect
installing it on a virtual machine will have had so fingers crossed
there. (Uninstall both instances though). Then go to my site and
see the instructions there for Installing. They cover some extra
steps that are sometimes needed. Try those which involve some
registry edits so usual warnings about backing up etc.
After you have done that, reinstall RH6 and then everything
should be OK.
Let us know how that goes.

• Project Error: Open project was canceled or RoboHelp was unable to load database

Hi,
I checked an HTMLHelp project out of SourceOff Site (SOS),
then attempted to open it locally with RoboHelp 5 when I got the
error message: "Open project was cancelled or RoboHelp was unable
to load database."
I found the TechNote for this error message (rb_3245) which
said to delete the .xpj and .cpd files, then right-click the HHP
file and click Edit to open the project. This worked fine for
opening the project, however the Primary Layout Source defaulted to
WebHelp. I reset the Primary Layout Source to HTMLHelp which caused
all of the graphics in the project to not display. I fixed this
issue, compiled the Help, and all appeared to be fixed. I checked
the project back into SOS to back it up. This morning, I checked it
out of SOS and tried to open the project locally again, only to get
the same error. I closed the project, undid the check-out, and
asked another writer to check-out the project then open it locally
to see if he got the same error. He did not get the error.
I am not sure what could be wrong on my computer that is
causing this error. I had no problems opening and using this
project until yesterday and I made no file name or path changes to
the project. Any ideas on what may be wrong?

• Error messages: Robohelp 9 - RHFrameStyleMappings.apj and .cpd files

I am updating an old Robohelp file to version 9 and I received the following warning messages.
Error in reading RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file
Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to load database for - Custom Casualty.cpd

Hi there
Depending on how old you are updating from, you may need to take the following step.
If you aren't using Frame, try this. Create a new blank project in a different folder. This should create a new and empty RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file. Then copy the file to your project where it's posting the error.
Now open the upgraded project and see if all is well.

• Best Practice for Image placement and Anchored Frames for use in Robohelp 9

Hi,
I'm looking for the best practices in how to layout my images in Framemaker 10 so that they translate correctly to Robohelp 9. I currently have images inside of Anchored frames that "Run into" the right side of my text. I've adjusted the size of the anchored frame so that my text flows correctly around the image. Everything looks good in Framemaker! Yeah! The problem is that when I link my Framemaker document to Robohelp, the text does not flow around my image in the same manner. On a couple of Robohelp screens the image is running into the footer. I'm wondering if I should be using tables in Framemaker in order to get the page layout that I'm looking for. Also, I went back and forth...is this a Framemaker question or is this a Robohelp question. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think Jeff is meaning this section of the RoboHelp forums:

• When generating WebHelp, "Adobe RoboHelp 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close" appears.

I'm using RH 8.0.2.208 (both patches applied). This project is a child project in a merged project structure and it is the only one that I am having problems publishing. I've tried deleting the CPD file and creating a new layout, but the error still occurs whenever I try to publish. (FYI, I have no problem opening this project). Are there any other actions I could try? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
Does this problem also occur if you publish to an entirely different location? If it does then can you link the problem to any recent changes. If not, it seems to be time for the old divide and conquer approach.
Zip up the project so you have a copy that cannot accidentally be opened and worked on. That gives you a copy that you can safely revert to later if needed. Save the zip file somewhere safe.
Then create another copy of the project so that you have two copies that can be worked on.
Open Copy 1 and delete half the topics. Ignore any broken links reported. Generate the help from that copy.
Open Copy 2 and delete the other half of the topics. Generate the help from that copy.
It should be the case that one copy is now OK and one still has the problem.
Trash the good copy and then create a second copy of the copy with the problem.
Repeat the process until you have located the topic that is causing the problem.
The process takes less time than you might think.
Let us know how you get on.

• Adobe RoboHelp 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I am trying to generate a project as WebHelp and after about 10 minutes of generating, the following error message appears: "Adobe RoboHelp 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close."
I am able to generate all other projects, just not this project.
This project is not on the network. It used to be on the network, but I moved it to my local directory awhile ago.
I tried restarting the computer. I tried generating from another computer and that did not work either.
I tried repairing the CPD through Microsoft Access. (I am not able to rename the CPD, because when I do that, almost all of my topics appear as broken links, so I use Microsoft Access to repair the CPD instead).
Is there anything else I can check or try?
Thanks,
Debbie

Thanks. I didn't see anything in the .HHP.
However, I think I'm getting closer to finding the solution (at least I
think I've found the problem).
I have various conditional tags. One is called "uni2" and one is called
"Remove_in_uni2".
When I generate with "uni2" excluded and "Remove_in_uni2" included, the
WebHelp generates.
When I switch them ("Remove_in_uni2" excluded and "uni2" included), then I
get the error.
I tried removing the underscores - didn't work.
I tried renaming it to RemoveIn18 - didn't work.
Any suggestions, anyone?
Thanks,
Debbie

The CPD is created from RoboHelp's internal files so a repair will not
necessarily fix the issue as Access will not know what to look for. A
rebuild is what is needed and it should not result in the broken links you
are seeing. However, that can happen and I have seen it. After repairing
the links, I had no further problems. Try generating a CHM first as if that
will create, it may make changes to the HHP that prevent the broken links.
Also take a look in the HHP for any obvious path errors.
Do you have many folders in the project? If not, creating a new project
should not be too painful as you can import all the topics in a folder in
one hit.

• Upgrade from Robohelp 8.0 to Robohelp 9.0

Prior to upgrading to Robohelp 9.0, I backed up all my existing project files from Robohelp 8 to the production server and kept a copy on my local server under My Documents.
When accessing one of the 8.0 project files using Robohelp 9.0, a pop up box appeared asking if I wanted to upgrade and I selected yes.
After the upgrade occurred, the file opened in Robohelp; however, I noticed a few of my images were missing and a project folder displaying with no topics. Very strange as to the files
were all there prior to the upgrade. I went back into the project file under My Documents and all the data is showing but not Robohelp, why is this occurring?
Hope I have not confused anyone, your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Wendy

Not wishing to step on Jeff's toes but first try simply renaming the folder with the missing images (in Project Manager).
If that does not work, then answer Jeff's questions.
Also add whether your version of RoboHelp had the 802 service release applied?

• Is there an auto-correct setting in Robohelp 7?

I am wondering because I notice that when I write html code and then view it in the design view and then go back to html view there are new tags that have been inserted like this: <robohelp>—</robohelp>. What does that mean? Can I turn that feature off. I have been writting html code for about two years so I don't think I'm a pro but I know how to valiadte html code before I publish it and it is very anoying when the program tries to correct what I'm doing. If I do something wrong I would like that it just doesn't work, that way I can find out what I did wrong and fix it. But when the program automatically "fixes" what it thinks is a mistake it actually makes things worse. I understand the idea of creating something thats easy to use, but if you haven't taken the time to learn html or css or JavaScript ect. then you shouldn't create web pages.

Hi all
@idesofdecember
If you don't want RoboHelp mucking with your code and you don't like using the WYSIWYG editor, why not just configure Notepad as your default editor in RoboHelp? If you do this, Notepad will open and you may freely edit your HTML and JavaScript to your heart's content. Nothing will change any code on you.

• Fixing the path for images in RoboHelp 8

I am rather new to Robohelp, so please forgive me if this has been addressed in another dicussion...I have been searching and cannot seem to find what I am looking to describe.
I am working in Robohelp 8, and creating a new help system by importing topics from a previous help system. The problem I am running into and I cannot see how to fix is that there are a couple of topics that have images where instead of the path for the image directed to a folder called "Images" in the main directory, it dumps the graphic into the project manager window when I import the topic. I tried viewing topics that don't have their images on the main project manager window, and comparing against the one that does, and I cannot see the difference. I have tried renaming the images and placing in the correct folders, and then inserting the images into the topics, but it still tries to look at the main folder and still dumps the image into the project manager.
Any help you can provide please share.

I am going to say yes (because it sounds like what I am trying to get at, but not sure).....I have tried deleting the images, and recreating, and then re-inserting into the topic, and they still go to the root of project. As I am going along, I am finding more and more.....so far there are 20 images that are doing this. However, I also just did what you mentioned and dragged it and put it under the topic. But I am still confused as to why I would need to do this for some topics and for other topics the images don't appear at all (meaning they don't show under topics or root of project), they are just linked through the folder on the main directory. Does this image help more?
Left of picture above: The folder directory has a folder called Images, and this is where all of the images were stored and are stored for the new project.
Middle of picture above: The topic Horizontal Command had an image in it "image20.gif", and it was at the root directory and as you suggested I moved to the topic. Also see the topic circled Expand and Collapse Folders topic has the image circled at the left within it.
What I am trying to understand is why would the graphic from the Horizontal command topic dump into the root of the project, while the image from the Expand and Collapse Folders topic not show on the root project or even within the topic listed. (Which is what I prefer for all topics).

• 0xc000007 The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Get this when run RoboHelp 10

I get a RoboHTML.exe - Application Error when I try to start RoboHelp 10 HTML. It says:
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application.
I have uninstalled and re-installed RoboHelp 10 several times but it made no difference.
What can I do?
Thanks,
Diane Heald
[Email removed]

Yes it did work fine. The problem was that I could not view the Single Source JavaHelp output on my PC after I generated it. I know you have to download Java JDK, etc. and I've done that many times over the years and each time it was a huge hassle, but finally got it to work.
But RoboHelp worked fine and the output worked fine in my customer's Java program. Since I could not view the output, a programmer at my client's site looked up the error message online and gave me some links to look at. I did what one of those links said by downloading something. I don't remember what at this point. It was then that I would get the message anytime I tried to run RoboHelp. So I cannot run RoboHelp now.
If I can just get rid of this error message and be able to run RoboHelp, I am OK with not even being able to run the JavaHelp viewer. I've dealt with that many times over the years on various computers and it is always a huge hassle. I'll just look at it after my customer loads it into their application.
Thanks so much for any help you can provide!
Diane

• A better way to deal with lost hyperlinks when converting Robohelp to Printed doc?

I have inherited a 750-page manual that is
"single-sourced" in RoboHelp X5. When I generate printed
documentation, all of my hyperlinks and converted to plain text.
Everytime we release a new version of the manual with any changes,
we have to re-generate, and then manually go into the MS-Word
converted document and re-create some 350 hyperlinks and page
number references. Somebody please tell me that there is a better
way to do this, or a better tool to manage single-source
documentation.

Another post has been raised relating to this problem. See
http://tinyurl.com/yvpaut
I am replying here is this is where most of the relevant
information is.
You found that using the Style Mapping template solved the
images problem but the document stopped generating at 450 pages.
That was sort of what I hoped for. Rather than go to the step I
will suggest in a moment, I suggested you try something else but
you never came back to the forum to indicate you had tried it, so
the assumption is you did and it worked. Patently it did not so
let's try what I would have suggested next.
On my website there is a topic on Print Issues and one of the
them covers Malformed Topics. Try looking for <p
style="mso-bookmark: as suggested in my earlier reply in this
thread. You can try RH's Multi file find and replace but FAR from
http://www.helpware.net/FAR
may get better results. I think with this error you usually get a
message. Do you have the Output pane opened and have you read right
through it for clues? View | Output on the menu. Whether or not the
Output pane mentions this error, I would search for it anyway.
Other Points:
A] It could still be a resource problem. The document is very
large so, as Harvey mentioned, resources come into it. I know the
PCs that won't play nicely have good resources but whilst I am no
expert in this area, don't foget XP is using more of them leaving
less available to you. It could be an issue but I am inclined
towards it being something else.
B] I also suggested a hunt for a rogue topic.
"What I would try is copying your layout so that you have
three versions of it. Then delete two thirds from each one. If all
three work fine, it sort of confirms that size is a problem. If one
fails, your on the track of the rogue topic."
Did you try that? Like I said, if all three work fine, then
we are back with the resource problem but we will have ruled out
other issues. It should take less than fifteen minutes to set that
up. Longer to run it but you can be doing something else at that
point.
C] On FrameMaker, no real answer but you will soon see
evidence that Adobe are continuing to better integrate all the
products we are using. I don't think you will see what you want in
the upcoming version though.
NEXT:
1] Please search for <p style="mso-bookmark:
2] If that fails, try creating the three layouts.
3] Then post back how it went. If unsuccessful, tell us if
the Output pane gave any information about things the process did
not like.
Let us know either way as if one succeeds and you post that,
it helps the next person with the same problem.

• Image Maps link not working in Acrobat 8 3D PDFs generated from RoboHelp 7

All of my hyperlinks work when I just generated my RoboHelp
project to PDF using RoboHelp 7 with the new Adobe Technical
Communications Suite (with Acrobat 8 3D). However, the links to
topics within the document didn't maintain from the image maps. I
had originally created flowcharts in Microsoft Visio, exported then
as .gifs, and imported them into topics in RoboHelp X5. Then I
created image maps from the boxes to topics in the RoboHelp
project. When I converted my project to RoboHelp 7 and generated
the PDF, all the links work great, except I don't get the
finger-pointing cursor when I hover over the boxes in the
flowcharts like I do with regular hyperlinks. Can someone please
tell me why? Thanks!

Sigh... and this is why no one like to work with newbies...
Thank you for your help. I am embarrased to admit that this was the issue.

• Information in the Powered by RoboHelp box not displaying

Hi,
While generating FlashHelp, I edited the information displayed when the Powered by RoboHelp icon is clicked from the Help file to include a Help version. While testing, some users reported clicking the icon displayed the information correctly, while others are not. Without getting into too much detail, does anyone have any ideas about why this would happen? Or how to fix? I've attached a couple of screen shots that may help.
Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.
Thanks-
LJuneau

Hi there
You may wish to investigate differences in the Adobe Flash player versions.
For example, where the dialog appears correctly, right-click the dialog and see what is reported for the Flash Player version.
I'm thinking you may see a difference. (at least that's the hope )
Try this on more than a few PCs. My guess is that those that work fine will all be related to one player version while the ones that don't display properly are related to another.
Any way you slice it, you are facing an issue with the configuration of the end user's workstation. Unfortunately, we all too often have no control over that.

• After successful install, I am unable to use RoboHelp 7 because of constant refresh of file lists

RoboHELP 7 installed on Windows XP
Our enterprise support team installed RH7 on my new laptop via our corporate intranet. I received an e-mail message reporting that the install failed so I contacted the support team, someone logged on to my machine by remote and did an uninstall of RH7. Then, the install was done again and the same failure message was received. Then, RH was uninstalled and the install was attempted for the third time. Again, I received the failure message. I had noticed that after each install the icons appeared on my desktop. So, after this third install, I went ahead and clicked the RH7 HTML icon and the program seemed to start properly. I have a key number from our enterprise team and I entered the key number to complete the registration. The UI appeared and I selected my recent project. RH built the file lists that I expected to see in the left panes of the interface but the file lists kept "twitching" and the cursor kept changing to the hourglass and back. This happened about once every two or three seconds and I could not move my cursor fast enough to select a file.
One of my co-workers suggested that I uninstall RH7 myself, check the registry and erase any robohelp entries. I know this is risky but I am confident I can do it. However, I would like to hear from any RH experts about how to solve this "twitching" problem, if there are other possible solutions. Thanks.

My gut feel is that if your organisation is large enough to have an Enterprise license, IT would not take too kindly to you uninstalling the product yourself and editing the registry. That's your issue though.
If they are happy, then you could try www.revouninstaller.com with which a number of people have reported good results if you use the stronger options to clear the registry. Again at your risk and responsibility.
You might also like to look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/before_install.html. It includes the script IT should be using. Maybe that should be checked as well.
The other approach is to get them to do a direct install. Worth trying given the issues you are having.
