Robohelp 8 hangs while generating Webhelp

Hi.
Two members of my team are trying to generate WebHelp in RH8. When they try to generate, the green status bar gets almost all the way to the end in the Uploading Files section, and then hangs. Nothing happens beyond that. They have to kill RoboHelp to get out of it. Both of them have Lenovo Thinkpad T400 laptops running Win7 (32 bit). To make things more interesting, I have an HP Elitebook 8460p running Win7 (also 32 bit) and I have no problem generating the exact same project.
What is really weird is that they were both able to generate previously. What changed was that we had a corrupt CPD and had to recreate it. After that, the problems started.
I was hoping the log file would provide some insight into what is happening, but it seems like the process hangs before the log file is written.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Rob Myre

Hi Rob
Where exactly are the project files? Are they on a LAN? If so, try copying them locally to the C drive and see if things improve. If so, there's your answer.
Cheers... Rick

  • RoboHelp 9 Stops While Generating WebHelp

The topic above pretty much describes the situation.  Numerous attempts bring the same results.  It stops at this point and goes no further.
    Any thoughts?
    Robohelp 9
Generating WebHelp.  Issue not encountered before now.
    Thanks.
    Holly

I’m assisting an editor/author/publisher in my office who is relatively new to RoboHelp.  I had hoped this was a simple fix.
I asked what changes have been made since the last time she published successfully.  Most of her topics link to exterior pdfs.  She said a ton.
I’ll go to her desk and try a sample project.
Thanks for the validation of what I suspected has to be done.

  • RoboHelp 10 crashes when generating WebHelp

I have a new laptop, and have installed TechCommunicationSuite_4_WWEFDJ, which includes RH10. I mapped RH to source control (Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider), and have successfully been able to check-in/check-out files.
When I generate WebHelp, below is what displays in the Output View, and then I get an error prompt that RH is not working and to close it, find an online solution, etc.
I must be missing a dll or something in my new laptop. Everything was working fine on the old one. Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Output View
    Starting compilation...
    WebHelp preprocessor 10.0.0.287
    Clearing output folder...
Compiling C:\FuelsManager Help\Web Application\Cirrus\index.htm...  note: the output folder is local only; not mapped to source control
    Preparing to create WebHelp...
    Preparing files for WebHelp...

I think you are in a real nightmare situation.
There are various ways of reverse engineering but as covered above, you have multiple outputs so you would end up with multiple sources instead of one single source for all the outputs.
I'm thinking though that with the mess you currently have, it might be preferable to create six source projects as a start point. Then you can manually compare Topic A in each source and copy / paste until you have one source that can generate all. You could use some file comparison tools on the content or create a Word document from each and then use Word's Compare tool.
You are 100% sure there are no true source files in source control?

  • Robohelp v9 crashes when generating Webhelp from linked FM book

    Hello Robohelp mavens!
    My environment:  Win7, FM v10, Robohelp v9. (TCS v3)
I've linked an FM book (containing 90 files) to a blank Robohelp project. Whenever I try to generate Webhelp, Robohelp crashes at some point.
As part of debugging, I clean the FM book (removed unused Pgf/char formats, conditions, etc.). That did not help.
Any idea why Robohelp gives up in the middle?
    Any input is highly appreciated!
    My best regards,
    Roman

Do you get any kind of error message in the output pod? Does it always crash on a specific file?
Does it work if you remove half of the files from the book? A quarter? Etc.?

  • RH9 hangs while generating printed doc

I was generating a printed doc and left my desk. When I came back, the laptop had gone to sleep. When I woke it, it was stuck on the last part, Updating Index.
I let it go for a while (the progress bar was showing that it was almost done and still processing topics). After 20 minutes, I tried to cancel by clicking Cancel. It ignored me. I killed it with Task Manager.
I waited a minute, then restarted RH. I tried again. It said the document was in use. I shut everything down, restarted Windows, and tried again. Got the same message. Went and deleted everything in the output folder for the printed doc. Deleted the .CPD file, just because.
Restarted Windows again. Tried generating the printed doc again. It's stuck at the same point, and it's been over a half hour.
I could go back to yesterday's backup without much pain (no major changes since then), but just in case this happens again and I don't have that option, what should I do?
It's a long weekend here in the States (Memorial Day) and I think it's a Bank Holiday in the UK (Spring Bank Holiday), so I'm sure you all aren't glued to your screens , so I'll be patient.

    In order:
Use Windows Explorer to delete the content of the target location and try again.
    Generate to a different location.
Create a new layout, not a duplicate.
Create two duplicate layouts and trash the different halves of the content.
    Open a bottle.
    Resign.
Seriously, post back if Steps 1 to 4 don't work.

  • Aperture 3: multiple export hangs while generating thumbnails?

Sigh. I was almost ready to write a blog post claiming that while AP3 has its share of bugs, it's not the unusable mess some have painted it to be. This morning I'm no so sure anymore. I think this is stellar update with tons of potential. When it works it screams on my machine and the new features are amazing. But guys, i need the basics to work.
Here's what I've just sent t via the feedback form:
I've been trying to export 29 pictures in web format for the past 40 minutes. I've had to force-quit AP three times and restart my machine twice. Aperture starts exporting at a normal pace but then completely hangs on a "generating thumbnails" process. At this point it becomes impossible to either cancel the task or quit Aperture normally. It also kicks my iMac's fan into overdrive - something that NEVER happens.
    This is not good.
    Other problems:
    - random crashes while using brushes.
    - second display doesn't follow "blank" command and keeps reverting to "alternate" even when the menu says Blank.
This is a great version of Aperture with a lot of potential. These bugs are killing me though.
I've just rebuilt the database. If it's still not working I'm going to remove plugins and see if it helps.
Anyone else having problems with this?

Absolutely has to be a bug. This isn't a setting or configuration problem. It might even be a Snow Leopard problem. I had the same problems with A2.1.4 on SL as I do with version A3.0.1. Export hangs seem to happen on images that came from my A2 library that was imported into A3 but originally adjusted in A2. These images were imported from scanned TIFF files. If the adjustment mechanism was flawed in prior Aperture versions then Apple needs to create and distribute a utility that converts these images into something that A3 can use.
I will have to revert to A2 running on Leopard until Apple can get this fixed. If I cannot export, there is no point in running the software. On this discussion thread, we are just trying to fly by flapping our arms.

  • RoboHelp 10 - Hanging While Opening as User on Windows 7

    OS: Windows 7 Enterprise x64
    Product: RoboHelp 10
I have setup the 64bit install of Robohelp using the application manager. After a full install, when a user trys to open Robohelp is just hangs at "intializing user data". If I right click and "Run as Administrator" and enter credentials to run as a local Administrator, it works fine. We can not have the users do this.
Is there something that is a known issue or something I am missing?
    Thanks

Are you perhaps confusing what the users of the Output created by RoboHelp will need to do with the users of the RoboHelp HTML application will need to do?
While I'm unaware of RoboHelp needing to be run as an Admin to use the editing environment, there should be no need for this to happen by average users of the output created by RoboHelp.

  • Taking more time while generating webhelp.

I am updating the MBDB manual using RoboHelp.  This manual consists of 9 projects that are merged into 1 (or over 16,000 documents total).  For each project I open it, add new or make revisions to the documents within and generate the document.  It is the generate process that is taking so long.  They should take between 5-10 minutes to generate and some of these take 30+ minutes to generate.

Jeff, it would seem that Madhu is perhaps confused about .CPD files, as it was stated "no where using .CPD files".
Madhu, the .CPD file is a file created and used by the RoboHelp HTML application. Sometimes we need to rename or delete it in order to coax a project to work again. In Tools > Options there is a setting to delete the .CPD when RoboHelp HTML starts. You might try enabling that option and see if things change for you.

  • Attempt to generate WebHelp (Primary Layout) after updates hangs and then shows "Not Responding"

Hello!  I am attempting to generate after making a number of updates to topics in a large project using RoboHelp 7.  RoboHelp 7 was recently installed on my machine by an IT staff person. It has been several years since I worked with this project in RoboHelp and at that time we used RoboHelp 5.  I have attempted to generate WebHelp but the application hangs and shows "Not Responding" about half-way through Updating files.  When I look at the folder (test folder on my computer's Desktop) to which I try to generate, about 2/3 of the topics and subtopics actually show in the folder even though the generate process failed. I have tried to work with IT but no one there knows RoboHelp. I cannot identify (don't know how exactly) where the problem is and how to remedy. Can someone please offer some guidance?  I'm very rusty with RoboHelp's processes...it seems as though something has gone missing but I don't know what to look for and where to start looking!  A co-worker has also recently had RoboHelp 7 installed on his computer (per IT remote install) and has helped update topics other than those I've updated in the project. He also encounters this problem when he tries to generate the project on his workstation.

Thank you, Peter!  The project is a large policy manual which resides on a shared network drive but we place a copy of the project's "working" folder on our computer desktops to allow updates and maintenance.  When we generate the project after making updates, the compiled project loads into a separate subfolder in that "working" folder and a member of our IT department pulls the files out of that folder to "deploy" the manual to our users. This process has worked for over four years, however, for most of that time, there has been only one person doing the work and that person is now out of the office for an extended period of time.  I rather got tossed back into the fray at the last minute when it was decided that a set of updates was needed by November 1--a deadline that has not been met, of course.
Since posting the plea on the forum, I've had ongoing contact with an IT staff who tells me the best solution right now is to save the files we each updated, request a file restore back to the last known good state, and then try to re-incorporate our changes to the clean version. In the interest of time, we are pursuing that...your additional thoughts and feedback about the situation would be most welcome.

  • How to launch Robohelp generated WebHelp from C++ application?

    Hi all,
Right now I'm using a trial version of Robohelp 11, because we want to redo our programs offline help. I'm a developer and trying to launch the Robohelp with the API from our C++ MFC application.
    Steps I've taken:
Add the RoboHelp_CSH.cpp to the project
Add the RoboHelp_CSH.h to the project
Disabled the precompiled headers for the RoboHelp_CSH.cpp
Added the Psapi.lib, wininet.lib and Htmlhelp.lib to the Linker Input
Added the #include "RoboHelp_CSH.h" to my project
Generated a webhelp project using the Robohelp 11 trial program
My OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, done all updates. My default browser is Google Chrome, latest version.
The thing is, my program compiles, but never launches a page. I have tried all kinds of things in my program, listing a few below. The result of the RH_ShowHelp() is always 1.
    int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm#<str=controller.html>>newwnd=false", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
    int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm#<str=controller.html", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
    int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
    int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm#controller.html", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
    int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm#controller", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "Controller/index.htm#controller.html", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);                                                                 (with the generated Webhelp folder in the executable folder)
int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "Controller/index.htm#<controller.html", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);                                                               (with the generated Webhelp folder in the executable folder)
int i = RH_ShowHelp(0, "Controller/index.htm", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);                                                                                       (with the generated Webhelp folder in the executable folder)
    What am I doing wrong?
(If more information is needed for an answer please say so, I'll gladly provide more info to get this to work.)
    - Marleen

    Hi Willam,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
All the options I mentioned in my first post did not show any effect, no browser started.
I tried your suggestion with -1 in this way:
    int i = RH_ShowHelp((HWND)-1, "C:/Users/username/Desktop/Controller/index.htm", HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 0);
That does not open a window either. Also tried this with my program running as administrator just in case.
Any more suggestions by any chance?

  • Missing text in RoboHelp 7 when previewing/generating Frame files

This is a new issue for me. Until last week, it seemed to work fine. Now, though, whenever I import by reference my frame files I have noticed that, while they look fine in the Design view, when I click Preview it has missing text in parts. In one file, which was all text (no graphics), it was completely in Preview. Then, when I generated the help, that topic was still blank.
This doesn't always happen, though. Sometimes a topic is fine up to a point, then, all the text is gone, leaving only the screenshots. It generates that way also. On the other hand, some files come out fine, with no missing text. (This is only apparent in the Preview and generated help.)
I'm using TCS 1, that has RoboHelp 7, and I generate to WebHelp. I've applied an update that makes it 7.01.001.  I've also applied the "missing space" fix that Peter Grainge suggested (it worked ).
Like I said, TCS worked fine up to last week, then I started seeing these missing chunks of text. I tried creating a new RH project and starting all over, importing only one small file that had all text and no screenshots/graphics. Both the preview and generated help came out blank, although I could see it plainly in the Design view before generating.
Has anyone else had this issue, or know what it might be?

Below is from one topic that didn't show any content at all for Preview or generated output, (taken from RH).  That is, it showed nothing when I opened it in IE9, but in Firefox it displayed just fine. I tried replacing <head> with the one above (in the output), but it didn't seem to do anything. I'll keep trying, though!

    Hi Everyone,

I wrote a little bit and I wanted to throw the first version on hockeyapp.net to the head of the company and the customers can test it and i have problem. I upload .appx file bu i have problem with generate .aetx file. When I run this command AETGenerator.exe
PFXFilepath PFXFilePassword it gives me an error in command prompt
    Unknown error while generating AET
startIndex cannot be larger than length of string.
    Parameter name: startIndex
I've read about these certificates but did not find a specific answer (a very specific answer). So what I need to do, What do I need,  what to buy and etc.
    What are my solutions?
    What should I do?
Is it enough that I register and I buy individual developer account?
    I hope someone answer me,
    thank you :)

Try sending it to store anyway… I have the similar issue, the kit hangs when saving result and never complete it.

If you want to test your app, you can also send to beta store and you can get response from the testers.

  • Windows App Certification Kit 3.4 error occurred while generating the report (the application will exit)

    Hi all,
I've encounter a pretty big issue while trying to check if everything with my windows phone 8.1 app is all right. After creating package (*.appx) I launched Windows App Certification Kit 3.4 to run it against all the test. Each time I try I get an error saying
"an error occurred while generating the report. the application will exit" and Certification tool just crushes
I looked online for some solutions but couldn't find any. Somebody knows what is going on and how to fix it ?

  • Search doesn't work in generated WebHelp

I am using RoboHelp10 as part of TCS4.
If I generate Microsoft HTML Help, the .chm file produced has perfect search capability. However, if I generate WebHelp, no matter what I search for, nothing is found. (Obviously I'm searching for words which I know exist. Even a search for "the" results in the usual "No topics found".)
I don't think it should matter at all, given that HTML Help has a working search, but my project has been created from DITA using DITA2Go. I then import the .hhp file into RoboHelp and generate. The reason for going through DITA2Go rather than processing my ditamap directly in RoboHelp is that the .xml files contain context-sensitive help elements which are ignored by RoboHelp when processing the ditamap. Everything works great with this method except that search isn't working.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions about what could be going wrong here.
    Thank you in advance!
    Heather

Well, I guess I'll reply to let everyone know that this has not been resolved, but I have found a different and better methodology. I have been able to import my ditamap directly into RoboHelp which uses the DITA Open Toolkit in the background. The reason I didn't do that before was that I needed access to my context-sensitive help elements. I have since discovered that I can create an alias text file myself instead of relying on DITA2Go to create it for me. It's a pain to create, but once it's done I can reuse it everytime I import my ditamap into RH by copying it into the project folder. I can then continue using RH as usual and the CSH works from our application.
So in summary - I don't know why search wasn't created before. However, if you want CSH using DITA and RH, there is another option.

  • RH7 Error: Failed to read from log... Failed to generate WebHelp Pro

Installed RH9 trial on Windows XP PC. Then, generated an existing project using RH7 to a new C: drive directory location on the PC using the same name. Renamed the project files in that C:drive directory to a test name and opened the project's .xpj file in RH9.  It converted cleanly.
Now, when I go to generate the RH7 original project from the original server directory, I receive:
Error: Failed to read from log (file name) .log.... Internal error encountered,  Failed to generate WebHelp Pro.
Does the log file keep track of the previous generation (time stamp, etc), since this RH7 generation has a skip in it for the one generated to the C:drive?  I've compared the log files from each run (.txt files) and don't see a difference. I even copied the log file from the C:drive run to the Server directory. No luck.  Any ideas?

    Hi John,
Thanks for the prompt response.  I am trying to evaluate RH9 / RH Server 9.
When I generate RH7 projects, I’ve always put the server (RH7 Server) directory reference in the ‘Output Folder and Start Page’ field.  This directory reference is where the compiled output ends up right? In my case, it’s in that field as:
    PBSrobohelp\D$\RoboHelp <file:///
PBSrobohelp\D$\RoboHelp>  Web Files\PBS Unit Processes Manual.  I’m not aware of a C:Drive local copy of the files. Doesn’t it go out to the server output for the .log file in question?
For the test, I took an existing project in RH7 and replaced this server reference with a C:Drive local hard drive directory reference and ran the output to it.  Then I went to the C:Drive directory and changed the project name, because there doesn’t appear to be a way to do a ‘save as’ on a project – RH7 wants to keep that name badly.  I then, shutdown RH7 and started RH9.  I opened the .xpj file from the new test project copy. It recognized that it was from an older release and it converted the test copy to RH9.  It converted cleanly with about 2 inconsequential document warnings but did not create a TOC.  I looked it over and saved it in RH9 – it was already my test name.
The original RH7 project opens fine in RH7 and the Test RH9 project opens fine in RH9. So I think I have a good test copy.  It’s just that when I point the RH7 original to the Server Output folder (which has its files) it gets the error on generation.
We are evaluating RH Server 9 but I haven’t attempted to publish anything to it yet. I’ve stayed  purely on my desktop.
    Hope this clears it up.
