RoboHelp 8 & Windows 7

Has anyone got the pin to task bar to function on RoboHelp 8 and Windows 7?

Hi Bob and welcome of the RH community.
Can you be a bit more specific by what you mean by "start RoboHelp". What version are you running? Is it the RoboHelp HTML or RoboHelp foe Word? Is it the application at all or the output generated from it? If so, what output?

  • Activex Error in RoboHelp 8 Windows 7

I'm getting an error when I start RoboHelp8 HTML.  The error says:
One or more Activex controls could not be displayed because either:
    1) You current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or
    2) You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.
As a result. the page might not display correctly.
Has anyone seen this problem before?  My IT guys have enabled every ActiveX setting they can and I'm still getting this when I start RoboHelp.
Any ideas or help are appreciated.
    Thanks.  Bob

  • How to fix "Adobe RoboHelp 7 has encountered a problem" error?

I am using Adobe RoboHelp 7 to create WebHelp, with Windows XP. I haven't worked on my help project for about 10 days, and suddenly when I try to open the project I get this message: "Adobe RoboHelp 7 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Other help projects DO open, so it's something about this one. I went to the TechNote called "Troubleshoot system errors and freezes in RoboHelp 7 (Windows XP)" and followed its first steps: downloaded all the updates for RoboHelp 7, installed current Windows service packs (except for IE 8, which gave me a problem last time I tried to install it), and deleted temporary files. None of these solved the problem. Now I am defragmenting my disk, but I don't have much hope for that.
Can anyone help? I'm near the end of my project and am under time pressure to make some changes!
    Thank you!

It is very rare for a project not to open after renaming the CPD and when it does, the HHP is the fallback. I cannot recall a project failing to open from the HHP, albeit with some damage.
As Willam says, I think you are going to have to look at the article on my site.
Many files have names based on the project name. Are they all correctly named? What I am getting at is whether a filename has got out of sync.

  • Robohelp is not "seeing" files

I was struggling with Tortoise SVN on my computer, trying to get my Robohelp projects out of source control. I am not sure what happened but now when I try to generate WebHelp, I don't get the Generate wizard. Generate just runs briefly and nothing happens. If you look at the attached screenshot, you see that RoboHelp doesn't "see" the files in the project--their icons are dimmed.
Any advice? I'm hoping you won't say start a new project and re-import your files b/c then I'll have to struggle with skins, css, etc.
    Thanks,
    V.

    FrameMaker 10

Please advise a former power user now a newbie. ;-)

Nope, just having the component parts of the suite doesn't equal having the suite. There's a little linking part that gets included with the suite download that makes RH show up on the FM menu and FM show up on the linking menu in RH. (plus, the price of the suite is cheaper than having the individual parts)

  • RoboHelp unable to start Microsoft Word

    Running Win 2K SP4, Robo X5.0.1, Word 2003.
Opening existing project (new to me) puts Word in wrong size
window (overlaps editor) and I can't get back to RoboHelp editor
window (busy/hourglass) unless I close the Word window first.
Closing the Word window gets a message that RoboHelp editor is
unable to start Microsoft Word, even though Word was running.
However, after closing Word, I could get back to RoboHelp editor
    window.
I can start a new project and import the .doc files. That
works okay as far as the above problem is concerned, but tends to
make a mess and needs lots of recovery work for things like browse
    sequences.

    Hi Rick,
You're absolutely right about Blue Sky. In the beginning,
RoboHelp was not the best product, but it had better marketing on
the enterprize level so I wound up having to use it.
    Hi Peter,
(By the way, this is a stand-alone machine on a home network
and I am the only user for this particular machine. I run from a
    renamed admin account.)
The Help menu indicates that there are no available updates.
I have checked everything on your site that seemed to have ANY
relevance at all. (Thanks for a great site.) I didn't find anything
under either print or install that helped, but I may not have
thought how you might index this problem. I have also checked all
the topics in this forum without finding anything on this
    particular problem.
In the mean time, the overlap seems to be gone (i.e., the
window position is now as it should be), but I'm still locked out
of the RoboHelp pane whenever Word is open (by RH) and I still get
the "unable to start Microsoft Word" error message after I close
Word. RH doesn't seem to be getting the message that Word has
    opened the requested file.
Thanks for the effort you are putting in on this.

  • Robohelp 7 Demo won't extract

I have downloaded and run AdobeRobohelp7_WWEFGJ.exe on two
different XP SP2 machines and a Vista virtual machine. The same
problem occurs in the exact same way:
    1. The "Extract RoboHelp 7" window opens, with the message
"Please wait while the downloaded files are being extracted." The
    progress bar finishes.
    2. An error message appears: "A problem occurred while
extracting the archive. Please try downloading the Extract Adobe
    RoboHelp 7 again."
    3. I have re-downloaded it for each failed installation, and
    nothing has helped.
How do I get past this? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Greetings Peter,
I am having a similar problem to Scott. My error is:
'A problem occurred while extracting some files. Check
available space on your computer and the write privileges on the
    destination folder.'
I have plenty of free space on my drive. The file permissions
are fine as far as I can tell. Second time I got this failure, I
accepted the default install location so the extractor would set
    the file permissions.
I've downloaded the file twice. One thing in your message to
Scott was you mentioned a file size of 533954. Has this changed
since Feb? My file size (both times) is 424331.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I give myself a
concussion from banging my head on my desk. It hasn’t been a
    good chm day!

  • Unable to open RoboHelp

When I try to launch RoboHelp, a windows installer opens and
says "Preparing to Install." After an hour or so, it times out.
I've tried reinstalling RoboHelp, but to no avail.

I think this is something specific to the PC. Can you try
installing it on another PC just to see if it works OK. Uninstall
    it afterwards.
If, as I suspect, it installs OK on the other machine and
opens repeatedly, uou then have two options. One would be to
contact Adobe Support as I don't think this problem has hit the
forums before but it may have hit them. The other would be to try a
new profile on your PC but that would involve the loss of all the
    settings on your applications.
Also before posting this I just ran through the thread again,
Colum mentioned firewall settings and I don't think you responded
specifically to that. I had a problem with RoboScreenCapture
wanting to be activated after every reboot. Not quite the same
problem but close. That turned out to be because the firewall was
only allowing that application one way traffic rather than two way.

  • Window size settings ignored

    Hi,
I'm using RoboHelp for Word 8 to generate HTML format output on Windows XP SP3.
I set the main window as 'maximize'. When I generate the output within RoboHelp, the window is maximised. Excellent.
When I double-click on the CHM it isn't maximized. It retains the size settings greyed out in RoboHelp.
    What's gone wrong?
    Thanks

If I understand you correctly, I think this is just Windows trying to be smart.  When you close a window in any application, Windows remembers the size and position, so the next time you open it, it's in the same place with the same size and state.  So, the first time your users open the CHM file, it will be maximized, but then when they close it, Windows will remember the size it was when they closed it.

  • See video: How can I remove Search Breadcrumbs? What is that?

    Hello,
Recently as a result of testing we found that the Search Tab would not return any results. The first level tech said it was a known problem with merged help.Cool! She suggested I download the Trial RoboHelp 8 and try that. It didn't fix the problem. The level 2 engineer suggested another route. The Adobe engineer examined the files and said that the Master project (master.chm) had become corrupted and recommended rebuilding the Master project and upgrading to RoboHelp 8.  It seems recreating the Master.chm file has fixed that. But I now have some sort of breadcrumb links/icons above the search results field. See the linked video/image of what I am talking about. It also only displays the contents of one of the 8 children chm files (Alarms). How do I remove this (red) drop down box and topic links from my final Master.chm file?
    Here is the video description:

I have also attached a screenshot.- See attachment.

Merged Help project (I hate merged help!)
ps: I grabbed some old (previous Robohelp version) files with a working master.chm file and  converted to RoboHelp 7. I opened the newly updated master.chm file and had the same problems....I believe RoboHelp 7 corrupts merged help files (master.chm) upon conversion. Just my 2 cents.

    Hi there
What you are seeing is something called a Browse Sequence. In order to remove it, you need to edit the window definition for your project.
    Click View > Pods... > Poject Set-up.
    Double-click your Window definition.
Clear the Browse Sequences check box.
Recompile the CHM and the Browse Sequences should now be banished neatly from the project.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Japanese characters in left pane

I have a project that has been translated into Japanese, and
the left pane of my FlashHelp system does not render the characters
correctly. The funny thing is that I got it to work in another
project that was translated, one that I think was built in X5 (or
possibly earlier) and has a skin that RoboHelp says should be
updated when I generate the output. I don't dare change it now, and
    it seems to work fine.
Unfortunately, I didn't make a record of exactly how I got
    that to work
, but I seem to remember it had to do with embedding
Japanese characters in the Flash skin files. Fonts are also
declared in the skin .fhs file and the accompanying XML file, and
I'm not sure how they interact, but it seems that the fonts in the
Flash files supercede those in the skin file.
In my newer project, the toolbar buttons show up in Japanese,
as do the "terms" and "definitions" headings in the glossary and
the index keyword prompt. It's the TOC entries, glossary terms, and
index terms that have the problem, and they are all driven by the
file skin_textnode.swf. As long as the other files are set to Arial
or Arial Unicode MS in Flash, they display Japanese correctly, even
if Japanese isn't embedded (using "anti-alias for animation").
Without Japanese embedded in skin_textnode.fla, I get this kind of
    nonsense in the left pane:
    検索する.
But with Japanese embedded, I get symbols like paragraph symbols,
plus-or-minus signs, and daggers. I have also saved the .hhc file
(the TOC) and the .hhk (index) in UTF-8 format using Notepad, but
no change there. The junk characters also show up in the overlaying
window when clicking a term in the index, and that's driven by
skin_index.fla. I've tried the font and character embedding with
that file. I have tried changing "font-family:Arial" in the skin
file to both "font:"Arial Unicode MS"" and "font:"Arial"". No
    difference.
I have compared files with that earlier project. As far as I
can tell, I have done things comparably, but the junk characters
persist in the left pane. It doesn't appear that there are
substantial differences between the way the old and new skins are
executed to cause the Japanese to work in one and not the other.
Any ideas that may help me make this work again? I'm using RoboHelp
6, Windows XP SP2, IE 6. (In theory, making this work for Japanese
will also solve my problem for Russian. I'm hoping the language
capabilities of RH7 handle all of this better so I don't have to
use these work-arounds for non-Roman characters.)
I know this is a load of information, but I've tried to
describe the circumstances adequately without writing the great
American novel. I'll clarify anything that's needed. Thanks,
    Ben

Solved: I found once more that the TOC, glossary, and index
information is pulled from files in the whxdata folder:
    whtdata...xml, whgdata...xml, and whidata...xml, respectively,
which are all in UTF-8 format. The Japanese characters have to be
changed in these files, but they get overwritten during a build, so
they have to be stored with the correct characters in another
location. Fortunately, our glossary will probably not be changing,
but the TOC and index will grow as the project moves forward, so
    this will take some babysitting.
This all leads me to wonder why RoboHelp generates copies of
the .glo, .hhk, and .hhc files into the output folder when it's the
XML files that are used instead...

  • Flickering/Refresh rates RoboHTML 6.0

We just recently upgraded to RoboHTML 6.0. Now the Topics
Pane on the left-hand side of the screen refreshes constantly. This
constant flickering is enough to drive you batty. I looked at
refresh rates in the online help & the only thing I could find
had to do with Robosource Control which we do not have loaded.
One interesting thing that I just discovered is that the
project that is flickering is a very big project divided into 30
folders & hundreds of topics in each folder. I just opened a
much smaller project & it doesn't flicker at all. Makes me
wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the size of the
    project.
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this? I sometimes spend
all day inside that huge project & that flickering is awful!
    Thanks!

    Hi all
Cindys, you may wish to try closing RoboHelp, opening Windows
Explorer and clobbering the ProjectName.CPD file. Just rename it so
RoboHelp can't find it. Then restart RoboHelp HTML and open the
.XPJ file. The .CPD should rebuild automatically as a result and
may eliminate the flicker. But be forewarned that the flicker will
likely continue until the .CPD has been fully rebuilt.
As for checking that RoboHelp WYSIWYG is the default editor,
it normally is. The trick is often the other option that is often
missed. The setting that determines whether the editor is
auto-selected or if the default is used. Normally that one is
configured for auto-select. If so, it *COULD* cause a different
application to open, depending on what was used to initially create
    the topic page.

  • How to set the JavaHelp viewer

    Hi,
Robohelp 7, Windows XP, installed with the TCS
How do you point RoboHelp to a different JavaHelp viewer
instance after it has been set initially? I was first using
JavaHelp 1, but then installed JavaHelp 2, and I want to switch
between the two for viewing, as I compile for the different
versions. The only way I found to do it was to change the path to
the active viewer which causes RoboHelp to lose it and to ask you
    again where it is.
And by the way, I looked in the help for this and I got some
whacked out non-scrollable window that seemed to search the Adobe
website, rather than provide help. Am I doing something wrong? It
didn't look like a help system at all.
    Thanks,
    Russ

Hi Russ and welcome to our community
Fellow Adobe Community Expert Peter Grainge has info on
JavaHelp that may help. Not sure about switching viewers.
For the help, click Tools * Options * General tab and choose
the “Use offline help” option. Then close and restart
RoboHelp to see the offline version of the help. It should be
    better.

  • Issue searching PDFs in RH8 WebHelp

I am getting different results from Robohelp searches when my RH8 Webhelp is generated using a RH command script in our software build process than if the Webhelp is generated from RH to my PC. Specifically, when I search for a specific term in my local Webhelp, the search results list any PDF files that use that term. In contrast, if I conduct the same search in the Webhelp that was generated during our software build process, the search results do not include the PDF files (the Webhelp files are deployed to a network computer when our software is installed).
Note that in both cases, you can click links from within the Webhelp to open the PDFs and you can perform Finds within these files, but I cannot use RH's search to locate specific PDFs in the actual online help for the app, which is something I can do locally.
    Here are the details:
I am using Robohelp 8, Window 7, and Internet Explorer.
    I am producing WebHelp.
    I am producing merged help.
I am linking to the PDF files from the topics. Each PDF is stored as a “baggage file”.
Mark of the Web is not selected.
Any ideas? We promised our customers the ability to search the PDFs for some of our manuals from within our online help system--it worked great when I tested it locally, but isn't working so good in the real online help....

This may or may not be the issue but it would be worth checking that the PDF are being indexed in the final WebHelp output. I've outlined how to do this is this blog post.

  • Extra words keep appearing in some topic titles

Using RoboHelp for Word X5, with Office 2003.
Something very odd keeps happening to a couple of my topics. The topic title is supposed to be "Copy Buildings or Structures", and when I have the topic open in Word for editing, the topic properties display correctly. But when I access the topic properties from the RoboHelp Explorer window, the topic properties display "placePlaceNameCopy PlaceTypeBuilding or Structure". I've corrected the properties and saved the document, but it keeps reverting back to that strange name.
I even deleted the topic (heading only since I didn't want to have to recreate the content) and recreated the topic with the same name, but the problem came back.
Luckily, this doesn't seem to affect the Webhelp output and this problem is invisible to the end user, but I'm just curious if anyone has seen this and knows what it's doing...?
