RoboHelp HTML crashes
I have a project that just started crashing on open. 8.0.2.208. I don't know what information you may need to help. Let me know. I had just finished importing .htm files from another project.
I've tried renaming the .cpd and using the .hhp. The project crashed on open each time.
It likely the problem is related to something in the import. Take a backup of the project even though it is broken at the moment. Then use Windows Explorer to delete the topics created by the import and the CPD
Hopefully the project will then open and just need a minimal cleanup assuming the import is the cause.
Then backup the project again before you attempt to import afresh. See if you can identify anything in the document that might cause problems.
There are topics on my site about importing.

Robohelp HTML crashes after emptying a project
Hi,
I use Framemaker to do most of my authoring, and then import
the files into RoboHelp HTML to generate the HTML help. As the
first step in importing the files, I delete all the topics, TOC
entries, and IX entries from the RoboHelp project. If I don't do
this, I end up with duplicates all over the project.
After I empty out the project, and try to save it, RH goes
belly up and I have to click through two sets of the "Adobe
Robohelp 7 has encountered a problem and needs to close" dialog
boxes. Having clicked "Send Error Report" a dozens of times, I'm
wondering if there is anything else I can do about this problem.
Thanks,
John B.Hi all
John, I couldn't help but notice that you said you are trying
to delete
ALL content from the project. And here is where my gut is
telling me the issue lies.
My thought is that you might take the following approach.
Create a single topic. One that will never exist in Framemaker.
Only in RoboHelp. Then forget about that topic. Never delete it or
anything. Then when you do your clean out, I'd take this approach.
Flush the TOC and the Index. Shouldn't matter which order you
use. Just that you flush these first. I say flush these, as they
depend on the content in the topics.
Flush the Topics. Well, all but the single topic that should
remain.
My thought here is that if you are deleting everything from
the system, RoboHelp is going belly up with no topics. And if you
deleted the Topics first, RoboHelp may be gagging on gobs of
updates as it wildly is trying to track all the sudden broken links
to TOC and Index items. That's why I suggested these as a first
step.
Please give that a go and let us know if it helps... Rick -
RoboHelp HTML 9.0.2.271 crashes when opening .htm files
Hello. I'm using RoboHelp HTML 9.0.2.271. When opening a certain RH project (I have three that I access regularly), the project opens fine, but when I try to open any of the topic files, RH hangs/crashes. I can perform any other tasks in the project (generating, publishing, updating the browse sequence, etc.), but I can't open any .htm files. In trying to fix this problem, I have:
Updated from 9.0 to first 9.0.1 then 9.0.2
Renamed the .cpd file
Imported one of the topics in the crashing project to a project that isn't crashing
Updating and renaming the .cpd file didn't work and importing the topic into a healthy project allowed the topic to open (so the topic doesn't seem corrupt). Also using 9.0.2.271, I had exactly the same problem: open project, double-click a topic in the Topic List pane... crash.
However, immediately after opening the project I had Windows 7's blue 'busy' doughnut symbol constantly flashing under the mouse pointer. This is described (for RH8) in Peter Grainge's description on his excellent website (RoboHelp > Opening RoboHelp Projects). The same topic mentions the .hhp file, so I checked the contents of mine...
At the very end, in the [MERGE FILES] section, it listed two other .chm files; one which was supposed to be there, and one which was not (Dummy.chm). I had merged Dummy.chm only during the early testing stages of my project, and had long since removed all references to it from my project. I have no idea why it was still listed in the .hhp file.
I deleted the reference to Dummy.chm from the .hhp file and regenerated the project... and Dummy.chm reappeared in the .hhp file! After deep-searching my project files using NotePad++, one remaining reference to Dummy.chm was also listed in the .xpj file:
<file>
<name>Dummy.chm</name>
<comments></comments>
</file>
So I manually removed those lines and saved the .xpj using NotePad++, reopened the project using RoboHelp, and regenerated. The rogue reference to Dummy.chm is now gone. I have opened, saved, and closed the project several times and it now seems to be reliable.
Probable cause of bug: I had recently performed a cleanup of my project folder and deleted Dummy.chm, but unknown to me I suspect RoboHelp was still looking for it when opening the project, hence the permanent 'busy' doughnut and the crash when trying to do anything else, like opening a topic. -
Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC
Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC? I would be grateful for any assistance.
Here's the situation:
-- I recently upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. I upgraded my projects to RoboHelp 8 projects.
-- One large help system I manage is built such that there is one master project and about 25 child projects. Each of these is its own item in the master project TOC.
-- In RoboHelp X5 I never had any trouble deleting these.
-- However now in RoboHelp 8, whenever I delete one (by opening TOC pod, right-clicking on item in question, and clicking Delete), and proceed to "Generate Primary Layout" (MS HTML Help), the generation/compilation process proceeds as far as "Generating full-text search data" and then the whole program crashes!
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the software? I have installed patches 8.0.1 and 8.0.2.
Once again, I thank you in advance for any pointers.

Why does RoboHelp HTML v11.0.1.235 crashes when inserting a script?
I inserted the following script
"<noscript>
<!--Javascript is not enabled-->
</noscript>".
I used the menu options Insert > HTML > Advanced > Script. Unfortunately, RoboHelp places this tag inside the "<script>" "</script>" tags which causes errors. I was in the procces of moving the tags when RoboHelp froze. RoboHelp (HTML) v11.0.1.235 was installed on my system last week. There is an Add-on to Microsoft Visual Studio (v4.5.50938) where all the files are kept in Source Control. The contents of the problem details are below:I have to update all HTML files with the noscript tag for browsers that users may have that does not support Javascript. My predecessor entered the HTML coding (script) incorrectly. by entering the text "Javascript is not enabled" at the top of each topic page in the online manual. Unfortunately, users accessing the WebHelp manual discovered that when "full text" or "word" search was performed the text appeared in the search results as part of the title of the page. When looking for assistance on how to correctly insert this tag I came across the RoboHelp Reference for entering this script. Note: I was using RoboHelp v9
Help > Contents & Index > Using RoboHelp 9 > Advanced program features > scripts
or
via URL: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/RoboHelp/9.0/RoboHTML/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d11aff59c8c5-7fb 0.html
Script window
This is how the above is entered in a topic: (HTML view)
This is how the script/tags should appear.
The system does not freeze up every time. I can work on a few topics (maybe 5 or 6) then it will freeze. I am not sure if the problem has anything to do with inserting a script but this is the only time it freezes. I use RoboHelp on a daily basis and is in it all day long for I am a Technical Writer assigned to preparing and updating online manuals. If I am creating a new topic or updating content on a topic (Design view) the system doesn't freeze up. -
Is RoboHelp HTML 7 incompatible with Lotus Notes?
Has anyone noticed incompatibility between Lotus Notes mail
v6.1 and RoboHelp HTML v7.0? I've had LN installed for the lifetime
of this computer, ~3 yrs, and have worked with RH 7.0 for ~2 mns.
Just this week, I've had three instances of LN not opening after I
managed to crash RH. Rebooting worked the first time: the 2nd time,
I had to re-install LN; the 3rd time, rebooting worked.Until Notes.6, I always suspected something was going on
between the two.
For many months, I haven't had any RH crashes I could blame
on LN.
If LN is doing any automatic stuff, try turning it off. Or,
as a test, close LN before you launch RH. Any crashes after that?
Automatic stuff means checking for new mail, alterting you
when new mail arrives, Calendar reminders, and so on.
I know, that's what LN is for, but you might find something
that always eluded me. For example, I turned off the new mail alert
long ago, but I can't prove a link.
Good luck.
Harvey
P.S. I should mention that sometimes I have LN and RH running
at the same time on one machine, but mostly I run them on separate
PCs. Still, I can't prove a link. -
RoboHELP 6 Crashes When Importing Word 2003 File
Discovered this today by accident (after modifying a Word
2003 file that I was previously able to import to "test" Help files
using both RH HTML and RH for Word (both V6) and thought I'd report
it because it appears to be a bug:
If you select the following option in the Word file that you
are importing, RoboHelp will crash during the import:
Tools, Options, General tab, Web Options, Files tab,
Organize supporting files in a folder
When you do the Import Word file action from RoboHelp, it
starts the import then issues a Microsoft C++ Debug Library message
box that says:
Debug Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\RoboHelp
6.0\RoboHTML\RoboHTML.exe
abnormal program termination
(Press Retry to debug the application)
Abort Retry Ignore
Doesn't matter what you select. RoboHELP crashes and the Word
file is not imported.
Wanted to report this here in case someone else runs into
this. It cost me a lot of time today.
KCHi Peter
Thank you for the suggestion. I created a new project, new
folders, imported the files a few at a time & compiled it each
time (with one build tag in it) and found that only two files made
it crash. On the one file, I removed the tables (which had no
merged cells) from the project and it worked. The other file was
removed completly and I will re-do that page.
I then opened my current project (with all links &
pictures etc TOC working) and imported the changed file and removed
the other file and wala....I have a useable project.
The project was on our own software so unfortunately I would
not be able to share it.
Being a relativley new (1.5 yrs) user, I find running into
bugs are brutal....Thanks for all your help. -
Robohelp 8 crashes after Windows 7 install
I'm a long time user of the pre-Adobe versions of RoboHelp, and just installed a trial version of Robohelp 8 on an HP laptop running Windows 7. The program crashes when I open a menu and move to another main menu without first closing the first drop-down menu. Here are the "problem details":

Interestingly enough, if I go move the mouse back up the menulist to the top, click to close the menu, and THEN move the cursor across to a new menu, the program does not crash. I did an uninstall and reinstalled with only Robohelp HTML (no server, PDF builder, Robohelp Office).
I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks!I have a purchased version of RH8 (via TCS2), and I'm receiving this same error today - RH8 & FM9 worked fine yesterday. I am on a Dell Latitude 630 laptop runnint Windows 7 32-Bit.
This happened to me just 1 month ago, and after getting the run-around from Adobe "Tech Support" (yes, it's in quotes for a reason) for 2 WEEKS, I had to completely uninstall, including running the Adobe uninstall script (apparently these Adobe products do not like to be uninstalled; that Adobe developer was apparently on vacation when the TCS software was released to the public). So, rather than contact Adobe, I'll be spending today uninstalling/reinstalling TCS from our server.
Another day using Adobe "software" (again, quotes are intentional).

Hi,
Could anyone explain the exact significance of selecting the
options Check for deleted files/Republish All while generating a
help file. The help to RoboHelp just mentions that Republish All
should not be used while merging projects.
Thank you
anuHi there
I'll be happy to fill in the missing detail for the options
you mentioned.
These pertain to the process of Publishing your WebHelp. And
that process is vastly different than Generating. But so so many
users confuse the two.
You have a RoboHelp HTML project consisting of Source files.
Perhaps they are in the following location:
C:\Projects\MyProject
You Generate WebHelp and that process modifies each of the
Source files. They end up in the Output location. Assuming the path
I listed earlier, that location would be:
C:\Projects\MyProject|!SSL!\WebHelp
Now the Publish process comes into play. The Publish process
copies the files from the WebHelp output folder to another
location. Perhaps a server. So here is what those options do.
Normally, the first time you publish, each file is copied
from the Output Folder to the Server. As each file is copied, it is
logged in a file that tracks dates, times, file name, etc. The
first time you publish, ALL files are copied.
Subsequent publishes then only copy across the files it
senses have been changed. So as it is copying, each file is
compared to the list. Is it newer? No. Don't copy. So the first
publish process may copy perhaps 1500 files. But the second time
you publish, maybe only 20 files are actually copied, as those are
the only ones that changed.
Republish all says to ignore the list and just copy ALL the
files again. You may wish to choose this if perhaps your IT folks
advised you a server crashed and suggested checking all your links
to ensure they are all working after they restored from a backup.
Fuhgeddaboudit! Don't waste time checking links. Just republish all
and you will know you are good to go.
Check for Deleted files doesn't do what you may think it
does. You might see that and think that if you deleted a folder of
files from your project, RoboHelp will also clean those files off
the server. Nope The key thing to remember with this is that The
publishing process will never ever delete files off the server. If
you need files removed, you will need to do that manually.
So what does it do? It slows the publishing process down. If
that option is enabled, not only does the process check to see if
the files are newer and need to be copied, it also checks the
server to ensure the files still exist! If one has gone missing, it
will be copied over. Even if it's not newer.
Hopefully that helps... Rick -
RoboHelp 9 crashes frequently when saving or save all
Hello,
I'll try to give as much information as possible on this and hopefully someone will know a solution. If you need anymore information that
I mght have forgotten, I'll gladly supply it.
So, the basic problem is that RoboHelp 9 frequently crashes when I do a save or save all. 4 out of 5 times it won't crash, but usually after a few
successful saves it will crash. And it crashes even more frequently when I insert an image, usually right after I insert the image and then save.
So, here's the deal. The Sr. Tech Writer and I are both working on a small RoboHelp project that will demo a new Web Help Center for
our company's customer facing website. There is already a very old Web Help Center on the website that was created with an older version
of RoboHelp, and we're seeking to update that project. This involves importing the old HTML files from the old project into RoboHelp 9, and
updating the existing files. We have two main project files at the moment and we are working out of a shared network folder. I know normally
that working out of a network folder would be the issue, but his project has not given him any problems at all. My project is the only one that crashes when I try to save it.
I honestly think it has something to do with the images, because we have to use SnagIt to take new screenshots. At first, I saved the screenshots to
the SnagIt folder, but I thought that may be causing a problem in that RoboHelp couldn't save them in that location. So, I moved all the new screenshots associated with the
project into the project folder and saved every new screenshot into the project folder. I also amde sure that none of the images were anywhere else in the local and network drive.
That didn't solve the issue.
I hope this makes snese. I don't know what else to try. If anyone knows another method I could try I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.Welcome to our community
Man, I wish I had but a single nickel for every time I've seen someone in the forums say "it has worked just fine for years on the network, so it can't possibly be that. But oh, we are suddenly having all these issues..."
The bottom line here is that you need to move the project from the network to the local C drive. Just try it. Won't take but a few moments to do. See if the crashes disappear.
Odds are they will!
And you will see an additional side benefit. RoboHelp will seem so much snappier as you work with it!
Cheers... Rick

RoboHelp 8 crashes when clicking See Also tab of Design-Time Control Properties
My project was previously in RoboHelp 7 and is a merged project. I copied a topic with see also buttons and want to edit the links. I right click the button and select Design-Time Control [name] Properties and click the See Also tab. RoboHelp crashes every single time. Error message:
EventType : BEX
P1 : RoboHTML.exe
P2 : 8.0.0.203

P9 : 00000000
One thing that is a little strange is that some of the buttons have Design-Time Control [object1] Properites and some have Design-Time Control [RelatedTopic] Properties, but all have the See Also tab.
If I insert a new See Also button using Insert > See Also, the menu choice is Design-Time Control [See Also] Properties and the tab is See Also. Click the tab and RoboHelp crashes.
If I insert a new Related Topics button using Insert > Related Topics, the menu choice is Design-Time Control [Related Topic] Properties and the tab is called Related Topics. Click the tab and RoboHelp does not crash.
I have a whole lot of these buttons I need to modify, so I'd appreciate if anyone knows of a solution to this problem.

<!--Metadata type="DesignerControl" endspan-->Hello again
Bummer that!
First, I'll answer something I failed to earlier. You said that sometimes it says SeeAlso and sometimes it's object1. Here's the deal on that.
When you click Insert > See Also the first time in a topic, the control is named SeeAlso. If you copied and pasted or clicked Insert > See Also again, the first time you did that it would be object1 or OBJECT1 depending on whether you used the menu or you copied and pasted. This is because each of these must use a unique name. So is it possible that you disliked seeing object1 on some and you renamed so the second (or third) also was named SeeAlso? I could see that causing RoboHelp to gag.
Assuming that's not it, what about topic filenames or titles? Do any of them have unusual characters in the names? Any character other than 0-9, a-z, A-Z or an underscore ( _ ) is suspect. Perhaps an odd character is tossing a monkey wrench into the works.

RoboHelp 7 crashes in Windows Vista
RH7 crashes consistently in Windows Vista, but it never used to. It always crashes at the same point.
To replicate the error:
1. I open the project. RH7 connects to RoboSource and attempts to grab the latest version.
2. RH7 starts chugging away and then RH7 closes unexpectedly.
I've already tried uninstalling/installing RH7 and RoboSource from scratch.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.Hi there

My RoboHelp HTML Project keeps crashing when I try to delete information or click on the Enter key.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. I increased my virtual memory to 4.5-9.0 GB. Below are my system properties:Does this problem occur with all projects or just one? If you only have one project, create a new one just to test with a few topics or open on of the supplied samples.
I suspect other projects will be OK and if that is the case, then rename the CPD file in the problem project (via Windows Explorer) and then reopen it. RoboHelp will create a new file and all should be OK. Post back if not.
There is a full explanation in Opening Projects on my site.
BTW. How do you click the Enter key? I have to press mine.

RoboHelp RH8 crashes when using RH7 environment file
I am just trying the RoboHelp 8 trial.
I created a new blank project.
I loaded an environment file that I use regularly in RH7 (attached as "authorgraphic_env2.txt" - just change the extension to .rhs). The environment appears, but all the tabs (the bits that stick out) are missing until I open a topic.
If I click on the Index or Glossary tab, after 5 seconds the tab disappears, and 15 seconds later, RH8 crashes, followed by the "shall I report this to Miscroft?" prompt. This has happened 4 times in a row. Repeatable fault.
Error signature is:
AppName: robohtml.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.203 ModName: toolkitpro1042vc80u.dll
ModVer: 10.4.2.0 Offset: 001b2b92
Any ideas, anyone?
(BTW, this system does not allow me to upload environment files with .rhs extension. This is daft! Please pass on...)
