RoboHelp X5 "no topics found" in "Search" tab

There has been one workstation used for RoboHelp HTML
development/compiling and has no issues. A second workstation was
built with the same application/version (RoboHelp X5.0.2). After
compling projects on this second workstation, when a .chm file is
opened and the users perform a search via the "search" tab there
are "no topics found". If the same project is complied on the
initial workstation, topics are found via the "search" tab. Anyone
have an idea on what is causing this problem on the newly built
workstation?

Below is information from the workstation that does not seem
to be compiling correctly. I registered the .dll, but the "search"
still did not function (did a compile of the project need to occur
after the re-registration?). I will be getting the result from the
workstation that is compiling properly shortly and will post the
result.

  • RH8 webhelp:  No topics found on search

Generated files from earlier versions of my project deliver search topics. Generated files from a recent version does not.
How do I fix the problem at the source project level?

    Here's what I did.
    1. Create a new blank project.
    2. In Project Manager, add New> Folders to the Project Files folder, being careful to copy the folder names from my most recent project.
    3. Imported topics into each folder from my most recent project.
    4. Imported the Table of Contents from my most recent project (New Table of Contents, Copy existing Table of Contents).
    5. Imported the project skin on the Project Set-up Tab from my most recent project.
So far so good.  I risk breaking links and can no longer see the creation date on my topics, but at least I have an operable search.

  • Search Tab in WebHelp Not Displaying Any Topics

Let me preface this thread by saying that I JUST figured out the answer to my own problem. I tried to post this thread about 2 hours ago, but the forum was having issues...I got unexpected errors, and such. Although I figured out the answer a moment ago, I wanted to post the thread anyway, in case others come across the same problem, they will know how to fix it.
The Search tab in WebHelp doesn't work. No matter what I do, no topics will display when I enter search terms that I *know* are in the Help system. I have another project on the same computer, and the Search tab in that project works fine. I tried to attach screenshots, but keep getting an "unexpected error," so I gave up. But basically, if I enter a search term and click Go, "No topics found" displays.
When the WebHelp is being generated for this project, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 0 sec(s)"
It looks like something that is needed in order to do the full-text-search is missing, but I have no idea what. I have read several threads in the forums regarding Search tab issues that others have had.
    I have:
        * Ensured that the itss.dll and itircl.dll are registered and in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Confirmed that I have keyhelp.ocx and hhctrl.ocx in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Used the same browser to view the WebHelp output for both projects (firefox 3.6.18)
        * Checked the project settings - they match
        * Checked everything in the WebHelp Settings window - General, Content Categories, Navigation, Search and Publish - everything matches in both projects
        * Tried creating a new webhelp layout, selecting a different skin...
    everything, to no avail.
When the WebHelp is being generated for the project where the Search tab works, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 115 sec(s)
I can't understand why the Search tab works in one project, but not the other project. See the diagnostic report below. According to the report, the only thing I don't have (and don't know how to get) is MS Help 2. But why would my search work in one project and not the other, despite not having MS Help 2? Both project have the same settings and I'm generating the same output - WebHelp. Any ideas why my Search tab works in one project, but not my other project?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

NOTE: In my original post, I forgot to include the diagnostic report that was produced by using the diagnostics tool mentioned in other threads where forum members were having problems with the Search tab, so here it is (just so that this thread is complete)...

  • Searching for a term using the Search tab in HTML Help doesn't find all relevant topics.

I'm using the Search tab in the HTML Help window to search for a few words.  But those words are not being located within the topics.  For example, one of the words for which I am searching is Australian.  I can find the topic that contains that word using the Contents tab.  But the Search tab doesn't find it.  I have even tried copying the word from that topic into the Search box but it is not found.
Is there a known bug in HTML Help search capabilities?

Is this a stand alone CHM file or is it merged? If it is merged, does the word appear in the search in the CHM containing the topic is searched? I assume you've checked that your Stop List doesn't contain the word being searched?

  • How to apply conditional build tags to the topic title that is displayed in Search tab of CHM?

I have the project in which 2 different words are used to reffer to one objects (this word/term depends on the customer). All other information related to functionality, steps, etc. are common. So:
In the help content (body of the files), I created 2 conditional build tags (CBT) for these terms.
In TOC, if topic title contains the term, I created 2 different topics reffered to the single topic file, but the title of the topic shows correct term (depends on CBT).
File names of this topics contain only term1.
The problem occurs when I generate CHM for CBT2 and search for the term1 (marked with CBT1) using the Search tab. All occurrencies where term1 presence in the file name, appear in the found results.
How can I resolve the issue?
These topics must be found by search (that's why "Exclude from search" option is not a decision).

Ahhh, you are correct. I believe it was Version 10 introduced that.
So here's what I'd suggest. Even though you are unable to use a variable in a Topic Title, it can still be used in other places such as the TOC, the Index and in the Topic content. So I'd still recommend that you declare and use a variable for those items. Just to simplify things.
As for any topics that have the term in the title, you could create two topics. One with the term one way and the other with the term the opposite way. Then use a Conditional Build Tag to exclude and remove the one that shouldn't be found.
This may cause you a bit of a maintenance issue by having the same topic content in more than one place. (one for each topic)
So to overcome that, you would be able to add the main body information to a topic and use an Inline Frame in the two topics that would then simply be shells with appropriate Topic Titles. Either that or declare a snippet and use the snippet in both topics. Put the main part in the snippet.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Search tab malfunction in RoboHelp 8 (WebHelp output)

I am trying to create a WebHelp output after importing a Word doc into RobobHelp HTML 8.  Once I generate WebHelp as the primary layout, the TOC and Index tabs work fine.  However, the Search tab isn't working: Regardless of the key word I use in my  search, the only result I get is a link to the imported doc (which imports as a single topic).  This isn't a helpful Search function at all.  What am I missing?
    Thanks,

  • Is there any way to limit search hits to only the topics found in the TOC?

Hi. I'm interested in creating multiple TOCs for a project. Included will be TOCs that only have a subset of the project topics and books. Is there a way to restrict searching to only those topics and books that occur in the TOC?
    Thx.
    -kt

    Hi there
There are a couple of ways to accomplish this goal.
The long way around is to select all the topics that are not in the TOC and look at their properties. On the General tab is an option to exclude the topic from any content being found in the search.
Note that with this method, the topic won't be found even if another topic links to it.
The other way is to look at the Single Source Layout options. For WebHelp, it will be found by first clicking to expand the Content Categories area, then clicking to select the category. Once you do this, there should be an option to "Exclude Unreferenced Topics from Output".
Note that using this method, if another topic links to the unwanted topic, it has then been referenced and will still be found via search.
    Hope this helps... Rick

  • Topics with ampersands (&) show up as question marks (?) inside Help's Search tab

    See the attached image.
    In the image:
Item A shows the Topic Title inside RH.
Item B shows what I'm typing in the Search tab of the HTML Help file. (I'm typing "GD&T").
Item C shows the list results. Notice that when I type "GD&T" in the search tab, the results return "GD?" ion the list of results.
In short the "T" is missing and the ampersand character shows a question mark character instead.
How can I get it to show an ampersand in this list and not delete the letter following the ampersand.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jared
    Latest RH7
    Vista 32 bit.

Some co-workers of mine eventually helped fix this.
In the Topic Title field for topic titles that have the & symbol, you need to type & in place of just an & symbol. This causes the & to appear within the Search tab list results. Note however that if you add this topic onto the Table of Contents, it will display & there, so you will need to rename the TOC to just use &.

  • "No Topics Found" RoboHelp8 (CHM File)

Using the "Search" feature in my .CHM file has begun to return a "No Topics Found" error.
For a little history, we have been using this same project for several years, long before I took over. Until this latest build, searching worked fine. Beginning last week, searching returns a "No Topics Found" result. I can find and access topics using the index, so I know that they are there but no luck using general search. I've tried manually adding keywords to several topics (under the general tab) with no luck. I've also restored backups of the project (from compressed .RAR files) and generated a .CHM with the same results.
The cause of this seems like it would have to do with some kind of setting that's been changed but I have no idea what. The only changes that I have made have been to the .CSS files we use (font type, size, and color changes), the addition of a few new topics/pages, and the use of J-Query witin those new topics.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I found this thread where Rick Stone has suggested a possible cause.

  • Search tab has stopped working in .CHMs

    I maintain several .CHMs for a client. For a reason I can't
figure out, the Search tab of any .CHM that I've updated recently
no longer works. Any search attempt results in "No topics found." I
verified that any older versions of .CHMs have working Search tabs,
but any .CHM that I've updated this year no longer has a working
Search tab. I even took one of last year's projects, made
absolutely no changes, recompiled, and voila, Search is broken.
I have verified that I've got all settings set correctly on
the Windows Properties dialog, plus all required .DLLs are
    correctly installed and registered.
The only change to my setup is that I upgraded to IE7.0
(finally!) earlier this year. And I've kept up with all Windows
updates. I have been using and continue to use RoboHelp HTML
X5.0.2. (I have not upgraded because, in my opinion, it was not
worth my $500. I'm self-employed and am holding out for a more
    robust upgrade.)
Any ideas? Frankly, I assume that a Microsoft upgrade has
messed up the works and I'm stuck, unless I shell out bucks....
    Nita Beck

Thanks very much for the reply, Author Care! As I said, even
for a project whose Search tab had been working and for which I
made absolutely no changes, recompiling that project now yields a
broken Search tab... Wassup with that??!!!
Including only an Index is not practical for the particular
Help system I'm working on today. It's loaded with esoteric terms
and strings of numbers (thousands and thousands) that users must be
able to (and, up until now, have been able to) search for, and it's
quite useful that found search terms are highlighted in the found
topics. There's no way that the Index in this case can replace the
functionality offered by Search. They are complementary
    features.

  • Missing: Search Tab

I'm trying to output a project into a CHM file using RoboHelp 8, and the resulting output completely lacks a Search tab. It's got a Contents tab, an Index tab, and that's it. (The project doesn't have a glossary, so the lack of glossary is no big surprise.) I searched through the forums, and the closest problems I saw were from people whose search tabs "didn't work." However, the fix in that situation (re-registering some DLL files), didn't work for me. I'm hoping someone out there has some insight into how to find a missing search tab. Thanks!

    Hi Shawn
Sorry, but I'm unfamiliar with Frame at this stage of the game. I think the placeholders come into play here. So you may need to experiment with inserting those.
When you create output from RoboHelp, you are able to choose the specific Index you wish to include in the output. Have you ensured you have done this? Additionally, I do believe that for a merged CHM setup a couple of things have to be in place for the index to show.
The master project has to have at lest one keyword defined and mapped to a topic
The index must be configured as Binary
To add a keyword to the master you will need to display the Index Designer pod. Unfortunately it's not straightforward. You do it by expanding the Index pseudo-folder in the Project Manager pod. Then double-click the index listed.
Now you add a term to the index.
From here you ensure Binary is enabled. Click File > Project Settings...
Then when you generate output, ensure you are pointing at the right index.
    Cheers... Rick

  • HTML Help: Showing Topic IDs in Search

We have moved from WinHelp to Microsoft HTML Help. One of our
customers discovered that topic ids are appearing in the "Select
topic to Display" box of the Search tab. In WinHelp, only topics
with Topic Names would appear here. These topics that are appearing
are topics that were created to display on hotspots on graphics in
the help, so I do not want them to display in the search. Is there
a way to keep the search from displaying topics without names?
    Thanks!
    Chris

    Hi there
No, X5 is a few versions old and doesn't have the
    capabilities 8 does.
So here is how you might accomplish it using X5. I seldom
will ever recommend to someone to do this but in this case it's
necessary. Step behind RoboHelp's back and use Windows Explorer.
Locate the offending topics and rename them from the .htm file
extension to .xhtm. This action will cause RoboHelp to sense them
as missing in action and list them with a red X. In RoboHelp you
will add the files to Baggage Files in the appropriate folder. You
will also delete the "missing" topics. Finally you will amend any
links so that they now point to their .xhtm counterparts.
This would keep them from being searched and allow them to
    exist in the project.

  • RH HTML search tab results

    Hello,
We're using TCS, RH7 and FM8 with all updates and patches. We
compile a CHM file with RH from a FM project Imported by Reference
    into RH.
We select Search Tab in the Windo Properties dialog box.
Tri-pane Tabs and Windows area. When we generate the RH project and
perform a Search using the Search tab, the file names show up in
the Select Topic to Display area, and the first page of the
selected file shows up when selected, with no indication of where
    the search topic is.
What setting am I missing or using to make this happen? I
want a list of the topics (headings) containing the search text,
not a list of FM file names.
    Best regards,
    Karen Gross

You have an option in RoboHelp when you import files from
FrameMaker which allows to control your topic names. If you select
<$paratext> and you are paginating the FrameMaker files based
on say "Heading 2", the name of generated HTML files is determined
by your <$paratext> in Heading2. RoboHelp makes the topic
titles of generated HTML files same as the HTML topic names. When
you search in WebHelp, it displays the topic titles which contain
    the search term.
If you control the topic filenames, you can get the strings
you want to show up in Search results

  • Topics found dialog results - unusual situation

    Hi everybody,
I'm having a pretty annoying situation. I'm building a HTML (.chm) help based on the imported microsoft word file.
The structure of the file is something like:
    ====================
    Header1
    ..Header2
    ..text text text
    ...Header3
    ...text text text text
    ....Header4
    .....Header5
    .....text text text text
    Header1
    ...etc
    ====================
I used pagination for headers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 during import to create a topics list. It all looks pretty, and when I search for a keyword it finds all those topics.
Topics found dialog box also distinguishes different topic titles for index keywords. The problem occurs in the TOC tab. Since in my source word document there is nothing between header 1 and 2, or header 4 and 5, a topic generated based on the pagination for Header1 would be a single line containing that header. When user clicks on the book link in TOC that links to that topic a one line is shown.
I tried importing first topics based on header style1 (via pagination), then import again header style 2,3,4,5 and it worked, although in such case when I click on any index keyword it doesn't distinguishes different topic titles in the Topics found dialog box. It always shows the index keyword name instead. Search still works that way.
Any ideas for a workaround? I'm stuck. Please help. Thank you,
    Kind regards,
    Kamil

    For clarification:
In the Table of Content whenever I select any book I want to display topics based on Header Style 1 (load everything that starts with header1 and ends with header1 in the selected topic).
At the same time, when I select keywords from the Index list or use the Search tab I want to break down main topics more detailed way (based on header styles 1,2,3,4,5...).
Example: Because now my topics are created based on style Header1 only, topics found dialog box doesn't distinguishes subtopic names (title "Importing" is shown twice where it should be "Importing" and "D Importing Data").
    Is this possible at all?
